Don Wakamatsu has his hands full. The Mariners managed to score a relatively rare win last night after Friday’s fracas, but what the H-E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS is up with Pacific Northwest teams? One would joke except it’s hard to write a punchline. Coubain, Smith, Green River, Bowie over Jordan, Jailblazers, Sonics→Thunder where Durant comes rolling down the plain. The afternoon game sees Dice-K facing Doug Fister. At least it ain’t raining. Comment away.

The Yanks are hosting the Royals, while Boston visits Seattle. The Red Sox and Yankees have each scored a whopping 510 runs on the season, best in the bigs, and can only hope that they should pad their numbers considering they are playing two of the sorriest franchises.
Love my chicken. Comment away.

While the Yankees are 3-2 since the All-Star break, they don't have their starting pitchers to thank for it. Over the past week the Yankees' starting-five rank last in the AL and 29th in the majors (behind only Philadelphia) with a combined ERA of 6.80; last in the AL and 29th in the league (behind only Houston) with a horrific combined BAA of .335 (compounded by the 11 hits CC gave up today in 6.1 innings); last in the AL and 29th in the league (behind only Philadelphia) with a combind opposing OPS of .952; and dead-last in the league with a combined WHIP of 1.82.
The pen has had a couple good outings and the bats are pretty lively, but there's only so long the Yanks will be able to play past such terrible starting pitching. Maybe Sergio Mitre can show them how it's done…
I believe dc is in the stands today, having caught A-Rod's 599th in the 7th and one of the strangest (as in worst) performances by Jorge Posada I've ever seen. If you haven't been watching, tune in – it's a crazy hitfest that is unlikely to end without more sloppy drama (maybe #600??).

What could be better – baseball is back. Oh, wait. The Sox are starting Tim Wakefield, who we detest. And their lineup looks like it is a product of rounds 15-24 of most rotisserie drafts. And they are playing the formidable Texas Rangers. Ugh.

How many people think it is a rotten idea that the league that wins this game gets an advantage in the Series? Raise your hands. The two of you that kept your hands down should go watch "Twilight: The Eclipse" together tonight. There should be good seats available.
Congratulations to David Ortiz for putting an exclamation point on his recent notifications that the rumors of demise have been exaggerated. Here's hoping the Junior Circuit serves up another can of whoop-ass to the AAAA squad. Comment away.
George Steinbrenner may have suffered a heart attack, and unsubstantiated stories are quickly filling the airwaves about what has happened to the Yankees' owner.
More news in the comments as it becomes confirmed.
UPDATE: The New York Times and ESPN are now reporting that the Steinbrenner family has confirmed the passing of Big Stein. Condolences to the Steinbrenner family and Yankee fans everywhere.

I must admit that Lebron's decision last night to choose the path of least resistance and join Wade and Bosh made me think for a second: Is this what it's like to hate the Yankees?
Well, never mind that. The rumor mill is milling and it looks like Cliff Lee could be a Yankee very soon. The M's are asking for Jesus Montero and two other prospects.
Lee, Sabathia, Hughes: The Big Three! And Pettitte's not too bad either. Call it the Big Four.

Comment away on your Yanks-Mariners action right here. Four days in the beautiful Pacific Northwest! I’ll be sure to see at least two of four live, and hopefully all between the telly and the short trip up Eye-Five. All-Star Andy Pettitte v. Jason Vargas.
Whether you do/don’t care about the Yanks/M’s, feel free to bitch about how the LeBron James clusterf*ck is a giant vortex that sucks the energy out of everything else.
Update 6:05pm: Swisher’s in for the ASG
Update 6:06pm: Nick just wanted to upstage the LeBron announcement
Update 6:07pm: ARod just walked from his contract to upstage LeBron and Nick
The last two might not actually be true.
Update 6:33pm Pac time: multimillionaire living in Cleveland vs. multimillionaire living in Miami. Yeah, me too.
