________________ (Go For the Sweep, Avoid the Sweep, Take the Series): Sox-O’s Gamer XI

After two games in a series that ______________ (has gone horrifically wrong, has broken all the right ways, has gone about how we expected), the Sox wrap it up this afternoon with Curt Schilling facing Steve Trachsel, with 75 years of life between them.

Schilling acquitted himself fairly well before running out of gas late in his first start back. Let’s hope we see a little bit more from him today. The Sox have managed to hold their own without him, but if they want a decent shot at this thing, they need him all the way back.

  • Should Papi take a 2 week break on the DL? He is obviously hurt and not doing all that he can.

  • I don’t know how you DH a guy who’s hitting .317, NTSF. From what I’ve heard, he needs surgery on his knee, and the shoulder will take longer than 2 weeks to heal. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of advantage to having him rest. Besides, if you do sit him down, who goes in his place?

    Ayuh - SF August 12, 2007, 1:54 pm
  • Sorry about the typo, NSTB.

    Ayuh - SF August 12, 2007, 1:55 pm
  • Gol dern. Mora makes a play that stops 2 runs scoring.

  • Orioles score on RBI groundout.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 2:09 pm
  • 1-0 Orioles after 2.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 2:11 pm
  • I don’t know who goes in his place but even though he’s still hitting well enough, he is hurt and not his regular self. The knee needs surgery but his shoulder seems to just need rest, it’s apparently strained or something. The mommy in me wants to coddle him even though I know we need him for the final playoff push.
And stupid Lugo, that run’s on him.

  • Manny doubles in Youkilis and Ortiz! 2-1 Sox. Man at 2nd, 1 out.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 2:21 pm
  • Manny’s an idiot to run on that. God damn it.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 2:23 pm
  • It’s 2-1 after that half-exhilarating, half-infuriating half-inning.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 2:25 pm
  • if your gonna DL Papi, it might as well be for the rest of the season…. Its not gonna heal on its own and certainly not in two weeks.
Once the call ups happen I suspect we will see games twice a week where Papi sits and Manny DHs and Ellsbury gets a start in the OF.

    TJ August 12, 2007, 2:25 pm
  • Also if NY loses a lot of ground on the Sox on their tough stretch coming up and Boston gets back to a 10 game lead or so… Papi may see a lot of rest in September… maybe 4 days off 3 days in for the month…

  • Varitek’s an idiot to run on THAT, but Roberts couldn’t hold the ball, so he gets the double he shouldn’t have tried for with nobody out.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 2:35 pm
  • Lugo doubles Varitek in with 1 out, and it’s 3-1.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 2:38 pm
  • Still 3-1 after 5.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 3:09 pm
  • So many frustrating ABs today, but Hinske leads the way. I mean, he has been awful today…runners in scoring position or ready to be advanced and he hits the ball right to where nobody can move. Hideous.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 3:23 pm
  • Still 3-1 after a relatively tense 6th that had runners at the corners with 2 out.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 3:40 pm
  • I know Hinske plays 1B and can play 3B but most of his games come in the OF…. they should designate him and bring Ellsbury back up now… Ellsbury is better and if they need someone for a game at 1B or 3B Cora can play it.

  • Manny GIDP with runners at 1st and 2nd. Terrible, terrible, terrible with RISP today/this year.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 3:55 pm
  • (The team, that is, is terrible with RISP.)

    Devine August 12, 2007, 4:02 pm
  • Sox are hitting .275 with RISP, that’s 9th in the majors.

    Anonymous August 12, 2007, 4:03 pm
  • Timlin 1-2-3 in the seventh.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 4:03 pm
  • Awesome, anonymous. How totally wrong I am. (I still say there are days when it seems worse. Look at, say, yesterday and today.)

    Devine August 12, 2007, 4:05 pm
  • Mora is putting on a clinic at 3rd today.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 4:07 pm
  • That was me, Devine. It’s called “observational bias” when your perceptions are different than the actual results. The reason is because we a situation with RISP is so attractive, that we notice it more when it doesn’t come through. Probably we look at the situation and assume the runs are scored ahead of time.

    Ayuh - SF August 12, 2007, 4:09 pm
  • One thing I’ve noticed about this blog- there’s a LOT of negative observational bias! I think it’s because of our history as Red Sox fans.

    Ayuh - SF August 12, 2007, 4:11 pm
  • the negativity on here sometimes is very frustrating

  • Okajima walks the leadoff batter in the 8th.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 4:13 pm
  • They get the lead runner, but the runner beats it at 1st. 1 down.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 4:15 pm
  • The Indians had the tying runs at 2nd and 3rd with none out, but Rivera struck out two in a row, and then got a fly out.

  • Gagne gives up a 2-run homer and the game is tied.

    Devine August 12, 2007, 4:22 pm
  • :@

    TJ August 12, 2007, 4:23 pm
  • I can’t believe this. This is bullshit. Gagne has given up 8 runs in 4 innings since joining the Red Sox. That’s an ERA of 18.00.

    Atheose August 12, 2007, 4:24 pm
  • Gagne does it again. Tie game.

    Kris SF August 12, 2007, 4:25 pm
  • Why are we pitching him with a close game? Is tito suffering from short term memory loss?

    brooklyn SF August 12, 2007, 4:26 pm
  • Time to go back to Delcarmen, Timlin, Oki, Paplebon. Gagne can pitch when we’re losing or winning by alot. I’m sick of this guy.

    Kris SF August 12, 2007, 4:27 pm
  • We haven’t won a game like this in over a month. Lead will be down to four by 5PM EST.

    Kris SF August 12, 2007, 4:28 pm
  • Personally I think Schilling should have gone out for the 7th. He was only at 92 pitches and looked strong in the 5th and 6th.

    Atheose August 12, 2007, 4:30 pm
  • Gagne for the Sox is like Farnsworth for the Yanks.

    Kris SF August 12, 2007, 4:31 pm
  • Hey everyone, remember a week ago, when we had the best bullpen in baseball? Ahhh, those were the days.
Hinske gets hit and then steals 2nd. Come on Youk…

    Atheose August 12, 2007, 4:34 pm
  • I don’t think we can hammer Tito for bringing in Gagne- he’d been lights out so far this season. After this, though, he’d have to show me that he can get through an inning clean before putting him in a save/hold situation.

    Ayuh - SF August 12, 2007, 4:35 pm
  • Apparently Gagne doesn’t know how to pitch the 8th inning. Maybe not coming into a game in a save situation makes him not care at all. Wish he would have told us that on July 31.

    Atheose August 12, 2007, 4:41 pm
  • The best bullpen in baseball? It was the best bullpen of all time, locking up WS II — and Cash was a chickensh*t for bringing up Joba.
    I’m lovin’ this.

    attackgerbil August 12, 2007, 5:09 pm
  • We don’t walk Tejada, but thankfully it doesn’t hurt us. However, Markakis steals 2nd base and we’re pitching the Millar. We need to put the force on! Put Millar on 1st1

    Atheose August 12, 2007, 5:12 pm
  • ouch. 3-run walkoff.

    attackgerbil August 12, 2007, 5:13 pm
  • From Millar to add insult.

    attackgerbil August 12, 2007, 5:14 pm
  • First base open, and we pitch to Millar. Once again Tito blows a game with poor pitching management.

    Atheose August 12, 2007, 5:14 pm

  • This is fast becoming the most infuriating Red Sox team in recent memory.

    MJL in L.A. August 12, 2007, 5:15 pm
  • The worst series of the year. I would even say losing this series was worse than being swept 5 straight by the Yankees last year.
At least last year everyone was injured or had cancer. This series was swept if not for Gagne’s massive choke jobs.

no sleep til brooklyn SF August 12, 2007, 5:16 pm
  • All throughout the year people have been calling for Tito’s head, and I’ve always liked him and thought that he’s done a good job. The last month, however, I can see where everyone is coming from. Jesus Christ.

    Atheose August 12, 2007, 5:19 pm
  • If there’s a saving grace, it’s that we’re not facing the Yanks again until the end of the month. I shudder to think what the Bombers as they are playing right now would do to this club. But the Sox had better wake up pretty freaking soon.

    MJL in L.A. August 12, 2007, 5:21 pm

The 2004 Sox were far more infuriating.

  • jeez, was gabbard for gagne the worst trade ever or what? three months of blown games from an old has-been (he ain’t resigning in boston to be a reliever, folks) for one of our best young pitching prospects?
wtf, theo? what on earth were you thinking?
that gagne could, you know, pitch or something?

    soxfan August 12, 2007, 6:43 pm
  • Theo was more interested in avoiding the criticism of not having done a deal at the deadline than actually making a sensible trade.

    Kazz August 12, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • Yeah but did Theo know Gagne would implode? I didn’t, I can’t imagine anyone else here knew he would either. This is a total surprise.

no sleep til brooklyn SF August 12, 2007, 10:14 pm
  • It was a sensible trade: Gagne is one of the best relievers in the game (and well-established as such), he just seems to be bringin the suck now that he’s in Boston. It sucks now considering how both he and Lester have fared, but it was still a great trade at the time. Not Theo’s fault.

    Atheose August 12, 2007, 10:16 pm
  • I have a suggestion for Gagne, who is having problems “adjusting to the set up role.”
    PRETEND IT’S THE NINTH INNING.
It is identical, after all, in every respect. You come in with no one on and none out, and try to get three outs without allowing runs to score.
What is there to “adjust” to?
