The Present and Future Team: Rays-Sox Gamer III

Rob Bradford on the Herald’s Web site this afternoon at least partially confirms a SoxProspects.com report that the Red Sox have signed 16-year-old Dominican phenom Michael Almanzar, a shortstop with excellent bat speed and tremendous power potential. The deal reportedly comes with a tremendous $1.5 million signing bonus.

The kid’s just 16, and he’s already 6-foot-5. Scouts believe he ultimately willt ransition to third. Coincidentally, that is also one of the organization’s long-term holes. This is exciting news, and it explains why the Sox weren’t too worried about not having any first-round picks this year.

If Almanzar is as good as his signing bonus, he will hopefully one day be providing offensive support for veteran ace Josh Beckett, who is trying to pitch his way into starting the All-Star Game. He has a shot: One of his chief competitors stumbled badly today.

Beckett’s trying to shake off his own struggles — his clunker on Saturday was his second in four starts to drop his record from 9-0 to 11-2. The Devil Rays are usually a good cure for that. After all, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Tim Wakefield seem to have enjoyed facing them, and that club was certainly a cure for the Sox’ stone-cold bats, which are so red hot, even Doug Mirabelli and Julio Lugo got into the act.

Opposing the Sox is J.P. Howell, who has terrible numbers and hasn’t had a decent outing since mid-June. But he’s also a lefty, and we’re not that confident in our bats yet to not feel a little nervous about that (even though the Sox counter-intuitively have a better OPS against lefties than righties this season).

In a final bit of good news, Hideki Okajima won the final fan voting for the All-Star Game, giving the Sox a major-league-best six All-Stars. It might not mean anything, but that’s still pretty cool. Would Jim Leyland make it seven if A-Rod sits by selecting Kevin Youkilis to back up Mike Lowell at third?

Here’s your game thread. Comment away!

  • Congratulations to All-Star Hideki Okajima! Normally, I don’t care about that stuff, but he was pretty clearly having the best year of the guys there, so I voted probably 80 times or so the past couple days for him (nothing compared to the devotees like TJ, but still…). Six All-Stars from the Sox!

  • I don’t care about the All-Star selections, and frankly I’d rather Ortiz et al get some g*ddamned rest instead of wasting their time in SF.
Sorry to be a wet blanket. Go SOX!!

  • Come on, people. If you’re going to use “Thunderstruck” for a Josh Beckett montage, you can’t use just the opening licks, and it can’t just be him striking people out with no rhythmic reference to what’s happening in the song.
Damn it. The perfect chance to combine AC/DC and Josh Beckett…and they blow it.

    NeffSox July 5, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • How great is it to have Coco hitting? The Sox have a TON of flexibility now, with Ellsbury especially. If Coco can keep his offense going, I have no interest in trading him (as some people say they should do, and start Ellsbury). He’s been great in center, his bat is alive, and that makes him a tremendous player. Let Ellsbury rotate around the outfield every day, giving guys rests, and dump Whiffy Mo, who I find more and more useless every day.

    SF July 5, 2007, 7:34 pm
  • Hinske down with a quick K, why do we have him again

  • Speaking of Ellsbury, how is his arm? I love the idea of him in right and coco in center. Manny would hardly have to cover any ground at all.

    Ayuh - SF July 5, 2007, 7:42 pm
  • It’s not a rap on Ellsbury to say that if he ever becomes a healthy, hitting Coco Crisp that would indicate he’s been a pretty big success. Crisp has looked like a top-tier player since adjusting his stance, adding in offense to go with his coverage of center. There’s no reason to think that with Manny 1.5 years away from free agency, that if Coco and Drew can stay healthy, the Sox could look at having a lot of options on the trade market come the off-season, particularly with Manny.

    QuoSF July 5, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • Just need three outs for an official game. Is it raining there yet?

    Paul SF July 5, 2007, 8:58 pm
  • lol, True, Quo. They could have hit back-to-back homers, just for fun, but they knew it was more important to get the win and.

    Paul SF July 5, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • Ellsbury in for Manny already, and Beckett gives up a hit on the first pitch. These long delays between innigns must have hurt his control…

    Paul SF July 5, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • Why is it a game shorter then 5 innings the stats wouldnt count but if a game ends tied after 5 innings the stats would be counted and the game replayed?
MLB changed the rules the tied game after 5 would now be suspended and resumed later. but still.

    TJ July 5, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • One of the stats I like to check pretty much deaily is the Runs Scored/Runs Allowed differential. The Sox have had pretty consistently the widest margin (on the plus side) in the Majors all year, and today’s game should widen that up even more…
Factoids: San Diego’s RA is insanely low, just 281… Sox are second lowest with 324. Yankees: 384. San Francisco has a very impressive 340, but is in the cellar because they’ve only scored 350.
(Meanwhile: Manny sits, Ellsbury in left. Why do I have this feeling that Ellsbury will have a big Dave Roberts moment in the postseason?)

    Hudson July 5, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Middle of the 5th is halfway through the game, TJ. If the game’s more than half over, it gets treated differently…

    Paul SF July 5, 2007, 9:05 pm

  • Yeah, Hudson. Ellsbury’s just electric. Maybe it was just coincidence and facing the Rangers/D-Rays pitching staffs, but the Sox really got hot right when he came up, and it’s not hard tos ee why. He’s got amazing energy. Having him off the bench with a healthy/hitting Crisp-Manny-Drew in the outfield? Killer.

    Paul SF July 5, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • 8 Ks for Beckett.

    Paul SF July 5, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • And there’s K #8.

    Hudson July 5, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • #9, #9, #9…

    Hudson July 5, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • And Wigginton makes nine! This game is in the books!

    Paul SF July 5, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • I still would like to see Ellsbury see another few weeks of AAA pitching. He hadn’t proven he’d completely mastered it, and I’m not sure caddying for Manny is the best way to continue/finish his development.

    QuoSF July 5, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Alright come on storm, time to knock this game out

    NeffSox July 5, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • I just wonder how long Ellsbury will be coming off the bench- there could be too many players out there after this year.

    Ayuh - SF July 5, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • Beckett throwing some heat tonight

    Rob July 5, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • coco is hot!

    mike July 5, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • I like Coco with power

    NeffSox July 5, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • I am in a 15 run pool and guess who I have this month? (After having the Padres for 2 consecutive months) That’s right the Boston Red Sox. Go Sox Go!!! (But please stop at 15)

    John - YF (Trisk) July 5, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • explain this 15 run pool

    NeffSox July 5, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • Bronson homered tonite :)

    TJ July 5, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • I assume the teams are picked at random, Trisk? Certainly wouldn’t have picked the Padres yourself, right?

    QuoSF July 5, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • very awkward collision at first

    NeffSox July 5, 2007, 9:29 pm
  • Beckett ends the top of the 6th with 105 pitches… I assume that means he’s done and will end the day with 9 Ks, as it would be surprising for Francona to overuse him with this big a lead…

    Hudson July 5, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • I also am curious about this 15 run pool.

    Devine July 5, 2007, 9:41 pm
  • game day still says mid 6th… is there a rain delay finally????

    TJ July 5, 2007, 9:45 pm
  • oh nm its back running for me lol

    TJ July 5, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • how’s ellsbury’s ab so far at the big league?

    mike July 5, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • Does that mean Crisp just did you a favor, John (Trisk)?

    Devine July 5, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • we have a pool at work… $5 a week, you get a random team, if you team scores 15 runs exactly in any game that week you win the pot. no team scores 15, the pot carries to the next week. everyone gets a new team each week.

    z118 July 5, 2007, 9:58 pm
  • what if 2 teams score 15 runs? split pot?

    TJ July 5, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • yep, split pot.

    z118 July 5, 2007, 10:13 pm
  • Cool. Thanks, z118. So I can still root for Trisk to get that money. Makes the game more interesting, rooting for the Red Sox not to score. (Just get the game over with, nobody get hurt…well, nobody get hurt from now on.)
Hinske walks to lead off the 7th.

    Devine July 5, 2007, 10:17 pm
  • Wow, that was quick. Lugo DP, Pena flyout.

    Devine July 5, 2007, 10:19 pm
  • Rays go quietly down to Timlin in the 8th.

    Devine July 5, 2007, 10:26 pm
  • Crisp saves the day for trisk

    TJ July 5, 2007, 10:37 pm
  • The Red Sox seriously threaten by loading the bases, but Crisp strikes out, and Trisk basks in the afterglow.

    Devine July 5, 2007, 10:40 pm
  • Game. To Detroit.

    Devine July 5, 2007, 10:46 pm
  • So I don’t know what this means…but I find it a little interesting. Clay Buchholz made his first career relief appearance in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday. No idea why he made a relief appearance or if it means they might try bringing him into the bigs as a reliever or anything…but it didn’t go too hot. 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 BB.

  • TJ July 6, 2007, 12:02 am
  • You get a random team each month picked from a hat. $2 per week, so nobody has won in 2 weeks, I would win $120 if another team doesn’t score 15 before Monday. If someone does it gets split. I was so pissed too when I got the Sox, silly me!!!
    Thank You Sox!!!
