AL Juggernauts (18/19 games in): A’s-Sox Gamer I

No team in the Junior Circuit has won more games than the teams playing today (Boston has one fewer loss than Oakland, and Texas has the same record as the Red Sox).

Doubront has been a solid 4/5 starter, going 5 innings in both of his 2 outings, and giving up 5 runs in those 10 innings. In his 102+ innings (18 starts) of major league experience, A.J. Griffin has a 2.90 ERA and is off to a great start this year (5 runs on the season like Doubront, but in one more start and twice as many innings). Let’s see how it goes: comment away!

  • Coco Crisp is on pace for about 40 HR, lol. Not this time, as he grounds out.

  • Doubront through the first on 14 pitches, 10 for strikes. (It took 7 to get Brandon Moss to strike out for the final out of the half-inning.)

  • Yeah, Gameday “Scout”…Griffin got Ellsbury to “chase” a 4-seam fastball…in the middle of the strike zone. Christ, that Scout thing is the worst.

  • Griffin wins the first inning pitch count battle at 12…and the strike ratio battle (9/12 > 10/14).

  • 2-0 A’s after 1.5.

  • Ortiz and Napoli open the inning with B2B doubles, so a run is in. Nava lines out. Middlebrooks K’s (what else is new?). Salty, oh man. The bottom third/half of this lineup makes a fan cry. And yep, Salty is out.

  • Still 2-1 after 2.5. Doubront PC = 48.

  • Ellsbury gets a one-out 2B, but he is stranded at 3rd to end the inning.

  • 59 pitches after 4. Very solid. Quite hopeful for 6 innings, could dream of 7.

  • Ortizzle Kizzles.

  • 2nd/3rd, 1 out for Sox after Napoli HBP, Nava 2B. MIDDLEBROOKS SLUMPBUSTER OVAH THE MONSTAH! 4-2 Sox.

  • Reddick K’s. Next guy goes 0-2, then watches 4 straight balls go by. God damn it, Doubront, I’d honestly rather you give up a homer there. It’s the bottom of the order, go after him! Then a single. Power threat Crisp up with 2 on, 1 out.

  • 3 pitches to Crisp, 3 balls (Gameday says getting squeezed a little). 3rd is a wild pitch, both runners now in scoring position.

  • Yep, walked on 4. Loaded.

    Devine April 22, 2013, 8:00 pm
  • Sac fly. 4-3 Sox. Corners, 2 out.

  • 3-1 count to Moss, Christ, he’s falling apart so bad. 2nd base stolen by Crisp. Walked him. Much as I hate to admit it, he should be pulled.

  • It only took 31 pitches (90 total now). The Sox still cling to a lead.

  • Ump was royally fucking Doubront on the Lowrie AB that ended the inning. Took him to 3-2 when literally any one of the so-called balls could have been a strike.

    Devine April 22, 2013, 8:11 pm
  • Softly lined single (Victorino), error (Pedroia), and dubious walk (Ortiz–ball 3 was totally a strike) lead to bases loaded, none out for the home team.

    Devine April 22, 2013, 8:17 pm
  • Napoli crushes (I’m assuming) a low strike over the wall in left center and the Sox run total is doubled on the GRAND SLAM. 8-3, take that!

    Devine April 22, 2013, 8:19 pm
  • Then Nava reaches on an error by a different infielder (old friend Brandon Moss). If I am an A’s fan, I am choking my dog right now.

    Devine April 22, 2013, 8:20 pm
  • Hell, I might even give Doubront TWO baserunners next inning at this point.

    Devine April 22, 2013, 8:23 pm
  • Middlebrooks pop out. Then Salty doubles and another run scores.

  • Walking anyone with a 6-run lead should be grounds for an immediate yank. But there was a doubleheader yesterday. The bullpen needs the outs from Doubront if they can get ’em.

    Devine April 22, 2013, 8:47 pm
  • At least so far he has sandwiched the walk with 2 K’s.

    Devine April 22, 2013, 8:48 pm
  • Doubront walks into the game a 4.50 ERA pitcher and leaves it…a 4.50 ERA pitcher (6 IP, 3 ER).

Griffin entered the game a 2.25 ERA and leaves it…a 4.50 ERA pitcher (4+ IP, 7 ER).

    Devine April 22, 2013, 8:51 pm
  • Ortiz and Napoli B2B K’s. BURN THEM!

    Devine April 22, 2013, 8:57 pm
  • Oh wow, Doubront for more. To his credit, 2 outs (one was a liner says Gameday) and no baserunners.

    Devine April 22, 2013, 9:02 pm
  • Apparently those 2 batters were the last. Mortensen in, 2 outs, none on in 7th.

    Devine April 22, 2013, 9:05 pm
  • Gets the final outof the inning on 2 pitches.

    Devine April 22, 2013, 9:06 pm
  • Sox make it reeeeeeally interesting in the 8th, have to use good pitchers for 5 outs (Tazawa in the 8th with the tying run at the plate, and Bailey for the save in the 9th), but…
