All-Star Tuesday Open Thread (and Gamer)

We like these free-for-alls, so here is another open thread for general ASG and baseball discussion.

I’ll start it off with a link to Fire Joe Morgan’s takedown of Rick Reilly, the famous religious philosopher.

  • Last night, when ag (and I, a little slowly) pointed out the comment, FJM was actually the first place I looked just in case.. haha..

  • The “he found Christ, so it’s all good now” crowd really piss me off.

  • Awful Announcing is also a great resource for instant reaction like that. And with video!
Apropos of very little, but I had the pleasure of meeting Fred Lynn on Saturday. Apparently someone at FanFest tipped him off to the existence of the very same Red Sox bar that I frequent, and I just happened to be frequenting it when he stopped by. Not every day that a perennial All-Star stops by one’s regular hang out spot!

  • On my blog, I proposed that Red Sox fans and Yankee fans should be friends

    Am I crazy?

  • FSP-
that is fantastic. i trust he was a nice guy and everything. that is always my concern when i’m in situations like that. i would hate it if i was annoying someone by approaching them or if they ended up being a tool.
i almost literally ran into reggie jackson a year or two ago here in boston walking down the street by the hotel where evidently the yankees were staying. aside from being rendered speechless by the sight of him, i was afraid he might be less than welcoming to being bothered by a stammering and overly excited nerd.
but fred lynn! that’s really cool.

  • I once was in a restaurant when Paul O’Neil was lunching. As he approached me towards the john I tripped him and yelled ‘take that, Yankee scum’
Everyone in the joint began laughing their asses off. My 15 minutes.

  • YFiB -
He seemed like a nice guy. I didn’t chat him up or anything like that (I left that to the others at the bar) but he was pretty low-key and casual. If he took someone’s recommendation to stop by a Red Sox bar, I’m fairly certain he knew what to expect there. The bartender did arrange to have a little group picture taken before he had to go, and after that was done, I thanked him for stopping by and shook his hand. He responded by poking me in my Sox shirt and saying ‘Well, someone here has the right shirt on!’ Easily the highlight of my weekend.

  • I’m very jealous FSP. Freddy tops my list of ex-Sox I’d like to meet. Which is probably not too surprising given my handle.

    ricelynnevans July 15, 2008, 3:26 pm
  • Boo to Rick Reilly. I’m an atheist – does this mean I cannot enjoy watching a guy blast twenty-eight baseballs into the stands? Because I rather did enjoy that, thanks.
Also: FSP, that’s totally awesome. You lucky bastard.
Sully: yeah, it turns out the person that I have the most in-depth baseball discussions with is a Yankees fan.

  • a perennial All-Star
And owner of two of the Top 50 Red Sox seasons of all time!
    Shameless plug, I know…

    Paul SF July 15, 2008, 4:03 pm
  • Me personally, I take a kind of perverse pleasure in Rick Reilly’s stupid comment. I feel like it sets the tone to ensure that his tenure with the Worldwide Leader is the multi-million dollar disaster it deserves to be. Sports fans are going to think, “Oh yeah, the guy who said something stupid about Josh Hamilton” for awhile, regardless of their own beliefs about religion.

  • a perennial All-Star
    And owner of..
And he was simply awesome as Herman Munster and that judge in My Cousin Vinnie.

    attackgerbil July 15, 2008, 4:10 pm
  • Hey did anyone see the clip of Chase Utley’s reaction to being booed during his introduction at the HRD? The camera (and microphone) clearly caught him saying one of Carlin’s seven words…funniest moment of the night.
    Here it is on YouTube:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBtkQoeaNCE

    KR July 15, 2008, 4:22 pm

  • Now you’ve got me thinking about how much better the whole Congressional steroid hearing could have been if the judge from My Cousin Vinnie was presiding.
“Mr. McGwire… are you on druuuuuugs?”
Yes, it only works if you’ve seen the movie, but… man, that would have been funny.

    Micah-SF July 15, 2008, 4:22 pm
  • I missed the HRD (no ESPN at home), but when I heard about the lip-reading clinic that Utley led, I instantly regretted not catching it live. And then when I read about the Reilly comment, I instantly felt better again about missing the whole night.
For those who did see the Reilly comment in real time: was it just another non sequitur (a la the “Taco Bell chihuahua” analogy that FJM also exploded)? Or did it seem like someone trying too hard to be “edgy” or faux-political? Or does he really have an ax to grind on the topic? I’m really curious, mostly because ‘atheist’ might as well be the eighth dirty word when it comes to mainstream entertainment these days.

    FenSheaParkway July 15, 2008, 4:32 pm
  • Don’t know if this quote was talked about yet, but I think it’s pretty funny.
“Asked if Francona would make it out of the Bronx alive if he didn’t use Rivera in the ninth, Papelbon said, “You’re starting to scare me with that question. Do you have the mob after him or something?””

    LocklandSF July 15, 2008, 4:49 pm
  • FSP: Reilly was going on and on (as were all the other announcers, each in turn) about Hamilton’s battle with addiction, time out of the league, the “dream” he had, his accepting of Jesus as his savior, turning his life around and gushing about the awesome-ness of his performance which was made super-duper awesome to the max considering his life circumstances. I almost missed the line because it had really become a droning sound at that point. Anyway, it was at the end of his version of the retelling that he threw in the “lousy night to be an atheist” line which just clunked. There was a brief pregnant pause. Fortunately, the other announcers ignored it completely and moved on; they had another hour to fill of retelling of the story and each needed their turn.

    attackgerbil July 15, 2008, 4:51 pm
  • From PeteAbe… This isn’t all good.
“It’s strange seeing Big Papi in Jorge Posada’s locker. Or Roy Halladay holding court where Mike Mussina usually does. Johnny Damon is gone and Kevin Youkilis is there in his place.
Ichiro Suzuki asked for his locker to be between two former teammates, George Sherrill and Carlos Guillen. Ichiro, they said, is one of the best teammates they’ve ever had. “People have no idea,” Sherrill said.
Michael Young is right next to Derek Jeter. Joakim Soria was busy getting a jersey autographed by Mariano Rivera. “My hero,” he said.
Yankees clubhouse manager Rob Cucuzza said how impressed he was with the Red Sox players. A few of them asked to see Thurman Munson’s locker. “Those guys and Terry (Francona) have been incredibly respectful,” he said. “I didn’t really know them before this and they’ve been great.”
Then we have Jonathan Papelbon, who is wearing a sleeveless blue t-shirt with a drawing of a hand making an obscene gesture. Yes, that obscene gesture.
    Classy.”

    LocklandSF July 15, 2008, 5:09 pm
  • I see, it does sound like all that build-up would lead someone like Reilly (because he’s such an IMPORTANT voice!) to feel compelled to lurch over the top with something like that. To read it on the page, it still seems so out of place. Nevermind inappropriate, just impertinent.

    FenSheaParkway July 15, 2008, 5:14 pm
  • Lockland – Pssh. That’s totally harmless. Papelbon is just honoring the memory of Yankee great Jack McDowell. Nothing wrong with that.

    FenSheaParkway July 15, 2008, 5:30 pm
  • Paps being Paps? Or the next coming of John Rocker? You decide!

    Lar July 15, 2008, 5:46 pm
  • It was priceless, how Morneau completely popped the media’s bubble in the HRD finals.
The script was letter-perfect for MLB and the homer announcers… But then Hamilton came up short. Hilarious, to my ears.

    Hudson July 15, 2008, 6:16 pm
  • More pre-game fun to psych yourself up:
Yahoo has a story about Ichiro’s infamous annual profanity-laden AL locker room all-star pep talk:
    http://tinyurl.com/6gjgoy
I never knew about this before. Classic Ichiro pull-out quote, estimating how much influence his speech has had on the AL’s dominance:
“I’ve got to say over 90 percent.”

    FenSheaParkway July 15, 2008, 6:43 pm
  • kinda funny how morneau comes out of the HRD looking like an atheist.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 6:50 pm
  • Hahahaha. Ichiro is awesome.

    Micah-SF July 15, 2008, 7:01 pm
  • http://joeposnanski.com/JoeBlog/2008/07/15/lajong-wins-derby-hobbs-wins-hearts/
Joe P’s impression of what the HR derby was like. Spot on.

    Micah-SF July 15, 2008, 7:28 pm
  • that Ichiro article is hilarious.

    Nick-YF July 15, 2008, 7:40 pm
  • I would pay top dollar to hear Ichiro’s pep talk. I’m talkin like $50. Seriously.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 7:42 pm
  • Every year, after the AL manager addresses his team, Ichiro bursts from his locker, a bundle of kinetic energy, and proceeds, in English, to disparage the National League with an H-bomb of F-bombs, stunning first-timers who had no idea Ichiro speaks the queen’s language fluently and making returnees happy that they had played well enough to see the pep talk again.
    That’s a fantastic mental image!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 7:46 pm
  • i thought the “an H-bomb of F-bombs’ may have been a bit historically/culturally insensitive….but then again i’m ok with indian mascots and monikers.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 7:55 pm
  • LMAO, John Kruck is predicting that Jason Varitek will be the All Star MVP.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 7:56 pm
  • kruky says tek will win the MVP (ted williams award) tonite. that would be something.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 7:57 pm
  • How is that insensitive, sf rod? We dropped A-bombs on Japan, not H-bombs. BIG difference. ;-)

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 7:57 pm
  • Where’s the ASG gamer?

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:00 pm
  • Ernie Banks is giving a pre-game speech to the NL. It’s shitty as fuck, especially after learning about what Ichiro does.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:01 pm
  • Introduction time: Lou Pinella gets boo’ed, it’ll be interesting to see what Paps gets.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:02 pm
  • David Wright gets boo’ed. Wow.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:03 pm
  • LMAO they’re showing George Brett giving a speech to the AL team, and everyone keeps glancing over at Ichiro.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:05 pm
  • Tons of boos for the Red Sox, so much so that Carlos Quentin of the White Sox looks around confused.
    Where’s the gamer?!?!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:06 pm
  • sweet. the sox players failed to acknowledge the crowd with a hat tip. that was a pretty classy way to handle the boos.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 8:06 pm
  • Aw, lots of boos for all the Sox. Makes me strangely happy. :)

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:07 pm
  • Ya, because this is all class: “Alex Rodriguez did a brief interview with the writers just now. As he was talking, David Ortiz shouted out from the adjacent locker, “No more talking about Madonna please!”
A-Rod paused for a second then kept talking as though he didn’t hear Big Papi. Everybody else started snickering, as did Ortiz”

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:09 pm
  • ARod brought it on himself Lar. You don’t want to get joked on by your peers? Don’t fuck Madonna.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:12 pm
  • Ya, that’s really classy. Can you imagine what would happen if ARod said something about Manny? Ya, okay. That’s what I thought.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:13 pm
  • I also love that Rollie Fingers is still rocking the dastardly villain ‘stache.

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:14 pm
  • every player on the AL side tipped their hats while being introduced with the exception of the 3 sox. gotta believe that was a planned thing amongst them. hopefully we’ll see the same from the 4 starters when they’re introduced….about two hours from now.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 8:14 pm
  • Oh come on Lar, Ortiz mentioned something that has been mentioned by every person in the country. Everyone else started snickering, so obviously some players are sick of the distraction.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:15 pm
  • Jackie, I was JUST thinking about the waxed ‘stache!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:15 pm
  • Wow, ARod had a BIG hug for Chipper.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:18 pm
  • … actually, it seems like a lot of these ‘historical’ players haven’t changed their grooming habits much since they played (e.g., Boggs’s mullet, Yount’s facial hair). We need more crazy facial hair in the game today, I think.

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:19 pm
  • seeing boggs in a yanks cap almost brought a tear to my butt.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 8:20 pm
  • I absolutely HATE the “(player name) CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP” cheer. I hate it when the Sox do it, I hate it when anyone else does it. The crowd does it for Jeter, and I cringe.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:20 pm
  • Sf rod, I hate that Boggs is in the HOF with a Yankee cap. He played there 5 years, 4 of which were the worst of his career at that point. He played 11 of them with the Sox, all fantastic years.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:21 pm
  • Cashman on Mikey K’s radio show tonight said CMW will be out until September … did I hear that right? (I was a bit distracted by traffic.)

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 8:22 pm
  • I hate Joe Buck. Jesus christ.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:22 pm
  • Wait, I take back what I said about Boggs HOF hat. He has a Red Sox one there, but wore a Yankee one tonight.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:23 pm
  • No one ever accused Boggs of having good judgment (Margo Adams.)

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 8:24 pm
  • Gotta say I’m a little disappointed by the totally lukewarm reception for anyone who isn’t a Yankee (or Red Sox, I suppose). Apparently the crowd has never heard of Matt Holliday?

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:25 pm
  • it’s almost like the sox starting lineup sprinkled with players i don’t like.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 8:25 pm
  • Francona getting a lot of boos too.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:25 pm
  • Tito also failing to tip his cap! Hee!

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:25 pm
  • Agreed Jackie. Ichiro doesn’t get a big applause? Cal Ripkin doesn’t?
Hank Aaron got a big applause at least.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:26 pm
  • “Alex Rodriguez did a brief interview with the writers just now. As he was talking, David Ortiz shouted out from the adjacent locker, “No more talking about Madonna please!”
    Oh, so the fnck WHAT?
    Big deal.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 8:26 pm
  • Jackie – with these ticket prices..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:26 pm
  • If you can *seriously* tell me no one here would complain at the very least if ARod brought up the Manny brawl *during his interview (might never happen since Manny skip out on those)*, please, PLEASE ignore me then.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:27 pm
  • Lar – true, maybe I should be more surprised that they recognized anyone except Jeter. ;)

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:28 pm
  • “Gotta say I’m a little disappointed by the totally lukewarm reception for anyone who isn’t a Yankee …”
Remember, these are the same people who booed aa 19-year-old Class-A Red Sox prospect in the futures game.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 8:28 pm
  • good point lar.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 8:28 pm
  • Maybe there weren’t blogs that you can google up in ’99, but fans at a certain park was booing the crap out of Jeter. Ya. Okay. I think I’m done here.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:29 pm
  • good point awarded to the ticket price comment.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 8:29 pm
  • By the way, there’s a lot of anger in here tonight? This is the All Star Game. Wher’s the love?

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 8:30 pm
  • We’re not complaining Lar, just pointing it out. Chill out dude! Enjoy the game!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:31 pm
  • “Maybe there weren’t blogs that you can google up in ’99, but fans at a certain park was booing the crap out of Jeter.”
Yes, but on opening day 2005, those same fans CHEERED quite loudly for Mo.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 8:32 pm
  • To be somewhat fair though, as in most of these “keep on cheering” situations (think graduation) everyone cheers the first few people, and then people tired until someone pronounced comes on (Willie Mays got a huge cheers). They brought in *alot* of HoFers, so people might just get tired. I know if it were me, I would probably cheer my heart out for a few, and then just fatigue until say, a Yankee come on..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:32 pm
  • //Yes, but on opening day 2005, those same fans CHEERED quite loudly for Mo.
… well, yeah, but that was ironic. Extremely ironic.

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:33 pm
  • Okay okay! =P Maybe it’s something I ate today. Or I’m filling in for A YF. I’m done with the stuff.. on to the game!

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:33 pm
  • Holy crap George looks like they just pulled the feeding tube out REALLY bad. I guess this is the first time we’ve seen him publicly in a few years though.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:33 pm
  • I just remembered the season ends with a Yanks-Sox series at the stadium. That’ll be exciting.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:35 pm
  • Quick question:
did anyone notice Willie Mays giving Josh Hamilton the total cold shoulder? Hamilton came out to center, extended his hand, Mays was turned the other way and never acknowledged JH, even after they cut away to a long shot from behind home. Maybe Mays never saw Hamilton and the noise prevented him from hearing the greeting, but it was awfully weird.
Also, I liked Winfield bringing two hats, and FU to Wade Boggs.

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:35 pm
  • Uhh I didn’t delete enough of my above comment. Please disregard the feeding tube comment. Sincere apologies.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:35 pm
  • Jackie, where have you been!? Welcome back!

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:35 pm
  • Also, I distinctly remember Opening Day 2005 at Fenway including boos of the whole NYY roster, including the massage therapist. Which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I’m not particularly complaining about the booing, but it is a little weird in an ASG (rather than a regular season game).

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:36 pm
  • SF – thanks, I’ve missed you guys too! (got sucked into a semi-supervisory role at work, so not nearly as much opportunity to sneak out between 4-7pm to comment. :)

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:38 pm
  • Were they booing Youk? I thought they were cheering him, “YOOOOOOK!!!!”.

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:39 pm
  • Lar, I was at the ’99 ASG, and the Sox fans were universally, every single one of them, cheering Jeter.
    OK, Bronx cheering. But whatever.
    ;-)

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:40 pm
  • little was said about the class move by tito to ask girardi to be involved.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 8:40 pm
  • I hope I’m the only YF here because everyone else is at the game! =P

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:40 pm
  • Yeah no kidding sf rod.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:41 pm
  • Will any stadium get 4 All-Star games? Probably Fenway when/if it closes, or if it manages to stay open long enough, but seems unlikely anywhere else..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:43 pm
  • Forgot Wrigley, though I don’t know the situation there..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:44 pm
  • Wrigley has had 3 ASG’s, right? If so it’ll get a 4th when it closes probably.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:44 pm
  • And here we go!

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:47 pm
  • So Tito has asked Girardi to participate, he has gone on the record to say Mo is closing, but he’s still a villain. Such is the price of success.
I think the booing is annoying (as I mentioned before I don’t boo at baseball games as a rule) but at least the booing has a source: the Red Sox’ success at the expense, for the most part, of their rivals. If being booed at an exhibition game is the price of success, let’s keep paying.
Now let’s all team up, Yankee fan and Sox fan alike, to beat the NL and give the Beantowners potential home field advantage at the World Series!

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • They’re doing the roll call… but only for Jeter and ARod.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • I almost didn’t notice that the game was actually starting; I got lulled into a stupor by Buck’s voice.
    Also, yay Cliff Lee!

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • They’re doing the roll call… but only for Jeter and ARod.
Wow, that’s sad, what a weak roll call.

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:49 pm
  • Yeah, like every year I’ll cheer for the yankees. But it’ll hurt.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:49 pm
  • Tough pitch from Lee there to Utley, on the black (or just off) but certainly a damn good pitch.

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:50 pm
  • Uh oh, Lee has back-to-back strikeouts. He’d better not strike out Berkman! Only Pedro should have the record!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • Quick work for Lee.
Lance Berkman has a Belushi circa 1978 look. Is he wearing a “college” sweatshirt beneath that uniform?

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • Good, Berkman flies out. No 3-straight K’s to start the ASG.
    Long live Pedro.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • hopefully tonite will be a good nite for atheists.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 8:52 pm
  • Based on the length of this commercial break this game won’t be over until 1:00am, even if the final score is 1-0.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • Here’s a question: will Manny get boo’ed if he homers?

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • sf rod – I have brownies, so it is shaping up to be a decent evening. For this atheist anyway.

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:55 pm
  • “Jeter has done nothing but win since the time he set foot in the Majors”.
Does Buck think it is 2001?

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:55 pm
  • Jeets!!!!
(I can ‘t believe I just typed that. Someone kill me.)

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:56 pm
  • Wow, the announcer totally called that Jeter was going to hit to right field. Utley doesn’t come up with it, one on one out.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:56 pm
  • Well, the Yanks have gotten to 13 straight playoffs. We’ll see if they make it to 14th..
Jeter singles (scoring?) for the first hit of the game.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:56 pm
  • if sabathia made the all star team, would it be with the AL or NL team? i’m sure it would be the NL but that doesn’t seem right.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 8:57 pm
  • JETER STEALS 2nd!
    I just vomited typing that.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:57 pm
  • Jeter stole that one. Is he demanding the Ted Williams award?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:57 pm
  • mmmmmm. brownies. god hates brownies.

  • sf rod – I think he can partipate at the fun stuff, but can’t actually play at the game. This happened a few years ago, though I can’t come up with his name right now..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:58 pm
  • I think A-Rod’s pregame cheer was about the most appreciative cheer I have ever heard for him in New York, no joke. It sounded like a really warm cheer.

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:58 pm
  • Are people doing the tomohawk chop for A-Rod? What?

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • Well the last time the Yankees won the World Series was when Jeter won the ASG MVP.
ARod pops up, Soto almost drips over Manny’s bat.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • The rest of the league seeing what us Yanks fan see a bit..
    JK.. =P

    Lar July 15, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • A-Rod with a borderline foul, caught for the out. Too bad he didn’t fly to Holliday.

    SF July 15, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • This ball-girl catch video is great. It’s totally faked though. It’s been on the net for a while.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • Soto almost drips over Manny’s bat.
He IS a very sweaty Cub.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:00 pm
  • Ath, I was wondering whether that was real or not. Pretty cool either way.

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 9:01 pm
  • I stand by my typo. Soto was clearly sweating profusely.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:01 pm
  • There was even a YFSF post about it.. =P

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:02 pm
  • Is it just me or Fox keeps half-missing the first pitches?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:02 pm
  • Yeah Jackie, my grandma sent it to me about 6 months ago and I argued with her for WEEKS over whether or not it was real. She thought it was.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:02 pm
  • that commercial reminds me of the michael vick one where he’s throwing balls out of the stadium. hopefully that ball girl doesn’t get caught up in the seedy underworld of animal fighting.

    Anonymous July 15, 2008, 9:02 pm
  • Great play by ARod! One out.
Can Lee pitch the entire game? I don’t want to see Lackey come in.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:03 pm
  • There goes the perfect game!

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • Anon, I don’t know who you are but you just made me spit mountain dew all over my keyboard. I’m still laughing!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • A-Rod with a smooth, relaxed, nice play to get Pujols, definitely vogue-ing on the throw.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • WHAT A PLAY BY YOUK!!!

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • Interestingly Ryan Braun looks a lot like Ryan from “The Office”.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:05 pm
  • McCarver: “Usually the ASG is low-scoring”
Five of the last Six ASG’s have haad above-average scoring.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:06 pm
  • SF – whose name is actually, “Ryan Howard”.. hehe

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:06 pm
  • Quick work for Lee again around the hit. Manny coming up!

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:06 pm
  • He kind of does SF. You know Ryan is one of the writers of the show?
Braun also looks like my Jewish roommate. Can’t quite place why though… maybe the eyes? It’s kinda creepy for me actually.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:07 pm
  • anon was me. yfsf is loading super slow.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 9:07 pm
  • Poetic justice tonight would be a long game, Tek comes in as the last guy off the bench and drives in the walk-off winning run.
    Never gonna happen though.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:08 pm
  • Braun also looks like my Jewish roommate. Can’t quite place why though… maybe the eyes?
Yes, all of us Jews have creepy eyes. It’s a curse.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:08 pm
  • SF, John Kruck picked Varitek to be the MVP. No joke.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • John Kruk is a complete idiot.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • Creepy eyes, big noses and huge wallets! ;-)
Joe Buck: “Ben Sheets was chosen to start because he pitched a great game last week despite losing”
He’s chosen because Lincecum and Volquez both pitched this weekend.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:11 pm
  • Great pitch from Sheets to K Manny. Curveball down in the zone, just a tough pitch.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:12 pm
  • And Lincecum has a really bad cold too, I believe.

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 9:12 pm
  • 66?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:13 pm
  • Bradley walks, and Fox zooms in on Sheets as he utters a perfectly clear F-bomb.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:13 pm
  • Why the hell is Bud Black on the coaching roster? His team is like 5-89 this season. Clint Hurdle must feel bad for beating them in that 1-game playoff last year.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:13 pm
  • everyone has been late on sheets fastball. does it have a ton of late pop to it or are batters looking breaking stuff?

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 9:14 pm
  • Holy crap, Bradley steals 2nd! Who saw that coming?

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:15 pm
  • .. except for Derek Jeter..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:15 pm
  • He corrected imself, but ah well.
His breaking stuff is just nasty though.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:15 pm
  • Sf rod, I’ve heard that Sheets’ fastball explodes at the end.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:15 pm
  • Wow, ~40 pitches. That’s a lot for All-Star, no?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:18 pm
  • Time for Pedroia to be the hero!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:18 pm
  • late, late, late. every single batter so far.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 9:18 pm
  • Pedroia hits it hard but to the deepest part of the park. Damn.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:19 pm
  • Pedroia “gets under one” to center, sayeth Buck. It actually looked like a rope about 385 feet straightaway, I wonder if Pedroia can even hit one out to center at YS.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:22 pm
  • Pedroia “gets under one” to center, sayeth Buck. It actually looked like a rope about 385 feet straightaway, I wonder if Pedroia can even hit one out to center at YS.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 9:22 pm
  • I don’t know what it is, but I have him on my fantasy team and I can tell you he racks up the Ks.

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 9:22 pm
  • I absolutely hate Yogi Berra. I’m probably the only one.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:23 pm
  • Yogi sharing us wisdom.
Also, interesting on the Japanese characters for his stats.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:25 pm
  • I wouldn’t say I hate him but I’m not really enjoying him in the booth. Can’t remember Mo’s name? (and calls him “Muscles”?)

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 9:25 pm
  • Manny and Hamilton joking around with each other in the outfield on that play.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:26 pm
  • Hey now, go easy on the 83 year old..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:27 pm
  • Though I was surprised he didn’t know Mo though.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:27 pm
  • Yeah I dunno, I always thought Berra was horribly overrated player, both as a player and in his retired career.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:27 pm
  • mc carver was rubbing yogis back the entire interview. creepy.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 9:29 pm
  • Yogi just gave Mariano a new nickname: Muscles. I’m going with it.

    Nick-YF July 15, 2008, 9:29 pm
  • … he won the MVP 3 times, 15 times All-Stars.. do we have to go there?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:30 pm
  • Oh yeah, I think it is totally normal for an 83 year old to forget names now and then… I just don’t know why you’d put an 83 year old in the booth for a national broadcast.

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 9:30 pm
  • Seriously, Muscles is a great nickname. Hahaha.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:30 pm
  • It’s true, though that’s probably more of a Fox move.. =P

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:31 pm
  • ath- i think for us younger folk we have to respect the ambassadors of the game. yogi is truly that.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 9:31 pm
  • I don’t know how the voters will vote, but Ichiro should be a first-balloter. The only question is how they would weight the Japanese stats.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:33 pm
  • Sorry, not trying to hate on Yogi. It’s just always been a dirty secret of mine.
Jeter GIDP. Way to kill the buzz asshole.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:33 pm
  • Jeter also showing the world what he’s doing a lot of this year…

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:33 pm
  • Jeter wrecks the inning. Thanks, DJ.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:33 pm
  • God, I hope Muscles has a chance at closing out the game tonight. It would be something special, considering how much Muscles has meant to the Yanks and all of us these last 13 years.

    Nick-YF July 15, 2008, 9:34 pm
  • not gonna say a word. it’s the yankees day.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 9:35 pm
  • Okay the love for Hamilton is getting really old.
Oh and Lar, all 3 of those MVP’s should have gone to Ted Williams. But that’s a different argument for a different day ;-)

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:35 pm
  • By the way, did anyone caught the (probably unintentional) Yogi comment by Buck? Asked him about Sarah Jessica Parker.. and of course, a few years ago, I think Yogi sued Sex and the City for using his name or something..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:35 pm
  • Wikipedia tells me this:
“In February 2005 Berra filed a lawsuit against Turner Broadcasting System. He alleges that they used his name in a racy advertisement for Sex and the City. The advertisement asked what the definition of a “yogasm” is: a) a type of yo-yo trick; (b) sex with Yogi Berra; or c) what Samantha has with a guy from yoga class. (The answer given was C.) This case was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum of money.”

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:36 pm
  • Well, that was quick.
Here’s something I don’t get: “people say that in batting practice this guy hits tons of homers” and then wax about how the player doesn’t do that in regular games. Isn’t it F*CKING HARD to hit homers off ML pitchers? I mean, MANNY RAMIREZ only hits like 30 and change a year. Why does hitting batting practice homers mean anything, other than that against batting practice meatballs a Major Leaguer, one of the elite athletes in his sport, can hit home runs.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:36 pm
  • good tid bit lar. had no idea…..you were such a sex in the city fan.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 9:37 pm

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • Halladay in. I love Halladay… and he quickly puts Berkman away.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • Holy shit Mo is showing Halladay how to throw a good cutter. The LAST thing Halladay needs to do is get much, much better.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • berkman is more like “the big peugeot”.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 9:39 pm

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:39 pm

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:39 pm
  • Ath – same here. Halladay is so good and probably deserves to start the game.
    Wow, Ichiro gunning Pujols out..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:39 pm
  • Fantastic play by both Ichiro and Jeter. Great throw and tag.

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:40 pm

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:40 pm

    SF July 15, 2008, 9:40 pm
  • upon further review…jeter missed the tag.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 9:40 pm
  • Ath – I was thinking the same thing, hahhaa.. “You want to learn this cutter, you come to New York!”

    Lar July 15, 2008, 9:40 pm
  • Yeah Lar! The thought of Halladay on a good team scares me. He’s such an underrated player, in my opinion.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 9:42 pm
  • Seriously, I love how the announcers sort of fake the conversations going on when the cut to shots of two players talking to each other. Who knows what the hell they are even saying?
Halladay: Hey Mo, can you show me how to throw that cutter?
Mo: Uh, sure Roy, yeah. [shows Halladay the completely wrong grip in an attempt to sabotage Halladay's efforts]. Here it is. Oh, and just so you know Alex can’t hit a pitch thrown with this grip. Definitely throw it to him next time you face him.
    Halladay: Thanks, Muscles!

    Lar July 15, 2008, 10:04 pm

Come on Pedroia, knock him in!

    SF July 15, 2008, 10:21 pm

    Lar July 15, 2008, 10:22 pm

    SF July 15, 2008, 10:23 pm

    Lar July 15, 2008, 10:23 pm

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 10:23 pm

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 10:50 pm

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 10:51 pm

  • NO CURTAIN CALL?!?!?! Come on, YFs, you guys give curtain calls when Shelley Duncan doesn’t hit himself in the leg with his tobacco spit. Where’s the love?!

    SF July 15, 2008, 10:55 pm
  • “I like how Joe is catching in the bullpen..”
That shot of him make it look like he was in the penalty box.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 10:55 pm
  • Papelbon coming in to pitch I think. We’ll see what reaction he gets.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 10:56 pm
  • Hey, this gamer is a lot like the Yankees gamers this year – only Lar left come the 7th inning!

    SF July 15, 2008, 10:56 pm
  • pretty cool what tito did with tek. he let him appear in the game without taking away an AB from a more deserving player. class all around. really hope the AL can pull this out.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 10:57 pm
  • Indeed Papelbon is in.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 10:57 pm
  • =P They’re all at the game! Er.. I think.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 10:58 pm
  • Strike out the side Paps. Make ‘em boo louder.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 10:58 pm
  • I’m here..
    Just reading though.
    J – DIZZLE!!!!

    Anonymous July 15, 2008, 10:59 pm
  • sf – ya, I give props to Tito for that move.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 10:59 pm
  • What are they cheering? I can’t make it out.
Fucking Tejada gets a bloop single.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 10:59 pm
  • The stadium is cheering “Mariano”. And booing him as he gives up a single.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 10:59 pm
  • Ken Rosenthal pipes in that the quotes from Papelbon were uncontroversial.
    Not that it matters.

    SF July 15, 2008, 10:59 pm
  • Rosenthal shut the fuck up so we can hear the cheer!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:00 pm
  • So stupid. Want him to give it up?

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:00 pm
  • Ya, and also that, while funny (perhaps), it probably doesn’t help the AL team.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:00 pm
  • Ahhh thanks Lar.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:00 pm
  • Yankee fans don’t know which way is up, preferring the AL to lose than to possibly have home field advantage in the playoffs. Brilliant. Win the battle, lose the war.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:00 pm
  • Mariano is kind of a hard thing to cheer.
It sounds to me like they’re chanting ASS-HOLE.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:01 pm
  • And now they’re chanting “Overrated”.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:01 pm
  • And now the “overrated” cheer breaks out.
Seriously, what fucking team do you want to win?

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:01 pm
  • Man, New York’s finest showing off their “class”.
Everyone hates the best. What a bunch of retards.

    Anonymous July 15, 2008, 11:01 pm
  • Sometimes I wish it was possible to bitch-slap 50,000 people at once.

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 11:01 pm
  • “Overrated” cheer. Is Tek pitching?

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:01 pm
  • SF – what the hell do YF’s care who gets home field in the playoffs?

    Anonymous July 15, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • Varitek probably wouldn’t throw him out, but wouldn’t make an error..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • But I don’t blame them. They get their news from reading the front and back pages of the Post.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • Dude, Navarro. Ugly.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • Fucking error.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • The error costs Papelbon. Thanks a lot Navarro, jackass.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:03 pm
  • Navarro giving away a run right there.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:03 pm
  • mccarver says that papelbon says “if i’m overrated, grab a bat!” i think mccarver thinks papelbon thinks.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 11:03 pm
  • Jeez, what a bad throw by Navarro, and now the fans are (quite predictably) all over Paps even though the run is on Dioner.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:03 pm
  • Does the “Overrated” chant happen a lot (in general)? I don’t think I’ve heard that before, except for in video games, which is curious..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:04 pm
  • Both = me.

    Brad July 15, 2008, 11:04 pm
  • Paps should’ve flipped them off. It would’ve been amusing.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:05 pm
  • David Wright is just now coming into the game?
Papelbon strikes out Wright. The media had better not blame him tomorrow if we lose 3-2.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:05 pm
  • Hey, lar, sorry we’re dumping on NYY fans.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:05 pm
  • Lar, I hear that cheer at college basketball games all the times.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:05 pm
  • Ath – the media could go either way.. if this holds, he will get the loss though.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:05 pm
  • Well, the leadoff hit hurt Paps, but the run is partially on Dioner as well.
Good to know this may be the highlight of 2008 for many YFs.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:05 pm
  • “Does the “Overrated” chant happen a lot (in general)? I don’t think I’ve heard that before, except for in video games, which is curious..”
College basketball. When the ranked teams lose.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:06 pm
  • Eh, part of it is deserved, I can’t defend everything!

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:06 pm
  • Yeah, it sucks to get a loss despite not giving up an earned run.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:06 pm
  • where can i find pitcher ratings? one of these years a 15 seed is gonna beat a 2 seed. i just love march.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 11:07 pm
  • AL takes the lead in bot 8, Paps gets win, Mo gets save.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:07 pm
  • sf rod – indeed, it means a few good days of drinking and wondering who’s up and who’s down in the pool.. haha.. love the madness.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:07 pm
  • “Eh, part of it is deserved, I can’t defend everything!”
Bummer the assholes go the tickets. I know NY has better to show than that.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:08 pm
  • I assume Wilson is only on the team because Linecum is sick? Otherwise, why is he there with a 4.58 ERA?

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:08 pm
  • March Madness is fantastic, even though my school has sucked in their last 2 appearances.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:09 pm
  • Wow. I know none of the YFs here would behave the same way, except for A YF, but that was an absolutely disgraceful display from the Yankees home crowd. There is no rational argument that says that was an appropriate was to act.

    LocklandSF July 15, 2008, 11:09 pm
  • The ASG is weird in that the best players are all gone in the late innings when comebacks may be needed.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:09 pm
  • Wagner going to close it out?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:10 pm
  • Billy Wagner for the 9th? Wow.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:10 pm
  • Lock, take heart (as I said above) that Paps giving up the run may be the highlight of their year.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:10 pm
  • No, Lar. One inbreed started it, and the surrounding inbreeds picked up on it and started following in step, and not long after that, the two guys from Jersey are spilling beer all over their wife-beaters with the Munson jersey pulled over it, but unbuttoned to show off the chest hair, and the whole section has turned into the whole stadium, and they will tell that story to little Tony for years to come when they get back to Trashensack.

    Brad July 15, 2008, 11:10 pm
  • Wagner!!! We have a chance!

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:11 pm
  • Wilson’s got a lot of saves. Exciting pitcher SF…very exciting.

    walein July 15, 2008, 11:11 pm
  • “one of these years a 15 seed is gonna beat a 2 seed. i just love march.”
    2001: No. 15 Hampton 58, No. 2 Iowa State 57.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:12 pm
  • Ya, I can’t find anything about how Wilson came to be..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:12 pm
  • Come on, Brad. Are all Sox fans mouthbreathers named Sully?
    These stereotypes don’t add much.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:12 pm
  • And he comes out. So I guess Wagner will get only one out. I don’t know if that’s respect or not.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:13 pm
  • Yeah, where is Jay Mariotti Jr., anyway? I figured for sure he’d be in here by now spitting on Paps.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:13 pm
  • I think if Paps had a sense of humor about things, he would have come in to the game with “Enter Sandman” playing. THAT would have been hysterical. He has to learn how to take controversy and amp it up. Backpedaling is for sissies!

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:14 pm
  • Bill, I live in Virginia right down the road from Hampton. That was an amazing upset around here when it happened, it was pretty awesome.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:14 pm
  • SF, that would have taken the cake. I think I’d shit my pants if that happened.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:14 pm
  • The conversation about class, etc, doesn’t make sense, and if it was a 10-2 game, not a tied game, then maybe. But ya, it didn’t help, though he wasn’t affected (unless you want to argue that he shouldn’t have given up the sac fly) but the result still ended up that way..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:15 pm
  • “These stereotypes don’t add much.”
Agreed. There are some knuckledraggers in there, too.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:15 pm
  • Ah, Rudy spotting in the stadium. I want those seats!

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:16 pm
  • Yeah Grady!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:16 pm
  • I thought there was no one left on the bench.. and then Longoria comes in. Am I imagining things?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:16 pm
  • what the bejesus is a “mouthbreather”?
Ha. I take it back. Just trying to decipher the insanity, and that’s the eventual conclusion I came to.
Besides I don’t think I said “all Yankee fans” just a few. Like the ones chanting.

    Brad July 15, 2008, 11:17 pm
  • Grady! Come on, AL! We need a homer from Longoria, and then Mo can close out perfection, with YFs staring at
    Papelbon (W, 1-0)
in the linescore. Come on, EVAN!!!

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:17 pm
  • Lidge is the closer. Duh. That makes sense.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:17 pm
  • Ath, I grew up in Iowa and have been an Iowa State fan for a long time. I’d argue that wasn’t an upset (but still a great moment for Hampton, tho.) ISU was gassed by the time that tourney rolled around. They lost to Baylor in the first round of the Big 12 tourney, still somehow got a 2 seed anyway. Fizer went pro too early after the 2000 season when ISU should have been a 1 seed. All they had left was Jamaal Tinsley and Paul Shirley. Eustachy did a nice job coaching them as far as he did.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:18 pm
  • Sizemore in scoring position. Please don’t suck Eva.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:18 pm
  • Um, Wagner might have gotten robbed on that pitch.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:18 pm
  • Ground rule double, and the game is tied!

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:19 pm
  • LONGORIA COMES THROUGH! TIE GAME!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:19 pm
  • YES!!!!!

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:19 pm
  • I am really enjoying all the base stealing. I guess having Ellsbury got Francona addicted?
    Longoria!!!!

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 11:19 pm
  • LONGORIIIIAAAAAAA

    doug YF July 15, 2008, 11:19 pm
  • Longo doesn’t suck. YES!!!

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:19 pm
  • I get the sooth with my earlier Wagner comment!

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:19 pm
  • lol the GRD almost hit that dude in the balls.

    doug YF July 15, 2008, 11:20 pm
  • Longoria!
Mariano gets to be the man who holds it now…

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:20 pm
  • Well, no “L” for Paps. No win either, but really, the win is the thing and not the name in front of it.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:20 pm
  • Mo coming in for the 9th. No save chance tonight for him, though he could get a win if we score in the 9th.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:20 pm
  • doug – I was thinking the same thing, and how he did not catch that at all!
But ya, that steal by Sizemore turned out to be huge.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:20 pm
  • “the best players are all gone in the late innings when comebacks may be needed.”
    that’s on you sf.
anyone see the fan take it in the nuts on the longoria hit?

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 11:20 pm
  • No Mo now, I guess.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:21 pm
  • Is JD still in the game? GWRBI in the bottom of the ninth could clinch an MVP award, obviously.
    Hold it, Mo!

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:21 pm
  • No Mo now, I guess.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:21 pm
  • I like how sf rod, doug, and me all was thinking the same thing. Apparently some things are natural!

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:21 pm
  • Time for Mariano to effing win in Yankee Stadium. Go, you example of consistent excellence!

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:22 pm
  • any chance this game gets called if it goes extras? pagging bud.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 11:22 pm
  • No Mo? There are no more save situations for AL though..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:22 pm
  • K-Rod?? Wha?

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:22 pm
  • Yeah, but sf rod, so was this:
    “Wagner!!! We have a chance!
Posted by: SF | Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 11:11 PM”

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:22 pm
  • K-Rod.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:23 pm
  • Will Mo pitch 2? Will KRod starts the 10th?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:23 pm
  • yeah it was like “Oh nice, someone’s getting a free ball”, then “that is not how you catch a baseball.”

    doug YF July 15, 2008, 11:23 pm
  • Maybe K-Rod for one batter, then Mo? Why would Tito leave Mo on the bench? I can only think that K-Rod isn’t going a full inning.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:23 pm
  • Juuuuuuuuuuuust kidding, K-rod is in. Wouldn’t it be funny if Mo didn’t get to pitch at all?

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:23 pm
  • Apparently, neither. What the hey..?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:23 pm
  • “I like how sf rod, doug, and me all was thinking the same thing. Apparently some things are natural!”
Yes, lar, like protecting your balls.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:23 pm
  • Ath – ya, the stadium will and should riot in that situation.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:24 pm
  • Are there matchups? Does this make any sense?

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:24 pm
  • Anyone see the guy get hit in the sack with the rook’s double?

    chazkawaii July 15, 2008, 11:24 pm
  • mo is warming

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:24 pm
  • I have a feeling K-Rod is going to blow it. Sinking feeling.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:24 pm
  • I hate K-Rod.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:24 pm
  • I couldn’t possibly want anything more than for Mo to get hammered and Tek to win it in the tenth with a huge walk off.

    Brad July 15, 2008, 11:25 pm
  • Sounds like a nail biter there in the Bronx.

    walein July 15, 2008, 11:25 pm
  • SF – I considered that, but that makes probably less sense, since if this goes to extra inning, no one will fault Tito for pitching KRod and taking out Mo. As is, it’s at least questionable..
    Who else can pitch?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:25 pm
  • Hmm, last time K-Rod pitched in a game that really mattered, what happened again?

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:25 pm
  • Brad – Tek already came in..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:25 pm
  • Walk! Jackass!

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:25 pm
  • SF – Josh Hamilton?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • Yes Atheose, it would.

    Brad July 15, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • K-Rod ALWAYS seems like he’s going to blow it. The day that batters realize that he infrequently throws strikes will be the day his “dominance” is over.

    walein July 15, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • Who else can pitch?
Whitey Ford is in the house. And Tek already played, Brad.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • jeez. it’s always ballon knot squeezer with k-rod.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • If KRod blows the game and Mo doesn’t get to pitch, Tito might get dragged out of the dugout and ripped to shreds by the New Yorkers.
WHAT THE FUCK? The “Sharp Aquos plays of the game” didn’t have the Drew homer.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • Corey Hart’s up. No one is wearing their sunglasses tonight?

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • yeah, I just saw that…must have happened while I was in the car on the way home.

    Brad July 15, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • Tito is yanking him. Good.
Go Mo! The crowd goes nuts.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:27 pm
  • Okay, here comes Mo. Thank you.
My only other guess is that he’s doing this to give Mo the full standing ovation. Probably the only logical explanation.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:27 pm
  • Get out of here K-Rod
    No one likes your style.

    doug YF July 15, 2008, 11:27 pm
  • Hey, I called it again! Mo coming in, thankfully. Good move, Tito, well-played. At least for this inning…

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:27 pm
  • Ahhh, here’s the man. For once, I get to feel the confidence of Rivera coming in and not the dread.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:27 pm
  • Tito brings him in in the middle of the inning to get the cheering crowd.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:28 pm
  • Maybe Francona should bring that older gentleman in, the one who pitched to Hamilton for the HRD. He can throw strikes!

    walein July 15, 2008, 11:28 pm
  • And Fox cuts away from what looked like an AMAZING moment. Terrible. Shameful. Embarrassing.
Fox gets the massive f*cking finger. And I am a Sox fan.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:28 pm
  • Alright, let’s go AL!

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:28 pm
  • Do not suck, Mo.
    DO NOT SUCK!

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:28 pm
  • SF – I was pseudo thinking that. But thought that was too vain. Haha. Ah well.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:29 pm
  • Did everyone else get a bad cut to a Directv ad? What is up with eight ads right at this special moment?

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:29 pm
  • I see what Francona did there. This way you get Mariano’s entrance on TV. Nice.

    doug YF July 15, 2008, 11:29 pm
  • i really hope this goes well. i’d feel awful if it doesn’t.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 11:30 pm
  • Also interestingly, if the guy on first scores, KRod will get the loss, and not Mo..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:30 pm
  • THE CUTTER

    doug YF July 15, 2008, 11:30 pm
  • “And Fox cuts away from what looked like an AMAZING moment. Terrible. Shameful. Embarrassing.”
You expect MORE from Fox? come on. you know better.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:30 pm
  • Yeah, Tito showed pretty awesome stage management there, if that was what he intended.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:31 pm
  • “Let’s go Yankees” cheer breaks out.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:31 pm
  • it wasn’t on any of our tv’s doug. thanks fox.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 11:31 pm
  • I saw him go halfway to the mound, so of course they went to commercial at that moment.

    doug YF July 15, 2008, 11:32 pm
  • STRIKE OUT THROW OUT!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:32 pm
  • Mo threw 6 pitches? I guess he’s coming out for the 10th if he has to.. (maybe..)

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:32 pm
  • Now that is efficiency.

    doug YF July 15, 2008, 11:32 pm
  • NICE!!!!!!

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:32 pm
  • Only 6 pitches from Mo, he’ll probably be out for the 10th if there is one.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:32 pm
  • Wow. Navarro. Just an inning to late, dick.

    Brad July 15, 2008, 11:32 pm
  • YES!
Amazing, I actually just shot my fist in the air after Mariano Rivera got someone out.
Picture perfect ending to the ninth inning. Now a run!

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:32 pm
  • The one, the only Rivera. Nice redeemer, Navarro.

  • the best 6 pitches i’ve ever seen mo throw. keeping the pitch count down. good. we might need you for a while tonite.

    sf rod July 15, 2008, 11:33 pm
  • Kinsler-Navarro-Drew up in the bottom of the inning. I hope he leaves Drew in so he can do it walk-off style.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:33 pm
  • Too bad the MVP is done by fan voting on the internets, which mean it’s probably already in. I’m a homer on this one and will vote Mo the Muscle. =)

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:33 pm
  • Here we go. All on the same team now.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:34 pm
  • Really, one of the nice moments of this game would have to be Tito handing Mariano the ball in the ninth inning. And Fox cut away from it. After all the crap that went down these last two days you think they would have an ounce of sense and show that to us, either live or, at the least, on replay. But nothing.
    What a joke.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:34 pm
  • On the Internet? Crap. That means it’ll probably be Peyton Manning.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:35 pm
  • Yeah SF, what a horrible network Fox is. The one moment everyone was waiting for gets thrown to the commercials.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:35 pm
  • Wheeeeeee! Dumpster.
    Fnck the Cubs.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:36 pm
  • And if it goes extra innings, we get to wear out the Yankees closer! Brilliant all around.

    Jackie (SF) July 15, 2008, 11:36 pm
  • What is up with Dempster’s glove wag? Annoying.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:36 pm
  • This is probably the most exciting All-Star game I’ve ever watched, made all the special by Yanks Stadium. Though that Blalock HR game was good, and that tie game was good until, err, it ended that way.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:36 pm
  • Francona out of position players? Shiznit.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:37 pm
  • Yeah, Lar, this has been a really fun game, first one I have watched start to finish in a few years, and really enjoyable. Too bad Fox stole one of the great moments.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:37 pm
  • Someone just hit it out.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:38 pm
  • “What is up with Dempster’s glove wag? Annoying.”
    It’s a timing thing.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:38 pm
  • OK, I instantly dislike Dempster. This glove flip of his is one of the more annoying things I have ever seen.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:38 pm
  • That glove wagging though is distracting, which is probably its purpose.. hehe..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:38 pm
  • Someone just hit it out.
Drew is on deck, be patient!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:38 pm
  • The NL has some good pitchers left.. is there a list of AL pitchers somewhere?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:39 pm
  • The NL is poised to go long into the night, since their first 3 pitchers all went 2 innings.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:40 pm
  • Up to Drew.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:40 pm
  • No way Drew comes through.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:40 pm
  • OK, time for JD to get robbed of his MVP. HIt it out, and feed our heated YFSF discussion when Mo gets the MVP.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:40 pm
  • That strike one call was some bullsh*t.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:40 pm
  • The ump made up for it by calling the 2nd pitch a ball.
3-1 to Drew now, crush it big boy! Don’t let Young get the glory!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:41 pm
  • HIttah’s pitch here.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:41 pm
  • Full count.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:41 pm
  • Ooh, he stared at a cookie.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:41 pm
  • Okay, now what?

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:42 pm
  • Oof, tough pitch.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:42 pm
  • Wow, great inning by Dempster.
It’s okay Drew, there aren’t any more position players for the AL so you’ll have a chance to win it in the 11th.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:42 pm
  • Called out on strikes.
    Dern.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:42 pm
  • Mo for the tenth, Lar, I would think. Then who the hell knows.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:42 pm
  • Sorry. Reverse jinx didn’t work.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 15, 2008, 11:42 pm
  • Marmol is absolutely nasty too. Though Webb is just as sick.
So this game isn’t ending early just yet..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:43 pm
  • Hard to fault a manager for not setting himself up for an 11 inning game — managers always take heat for not getting guys into game after the fact — but Tito certainly may have some issues in this contest.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:43 pm
  • How the fuck is the NL 9-0 in extra inning games?

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:44 pm
  • Mo’ Mo.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:45 pm
  • Fluke, Ath.
How many were after the DH was instituted? It might be argued that AL managers micromanage their pitchers, but I wonder how many games were pre-DH, how many after.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:45 pm
  • Im surprised Webb isn’t warming.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:46 pm
  • Great pitch.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:47 pm
  • Ath, at least two games, 1950 and 1955, were won by the NL in extras and before the DH. Seems like a total fluke to me.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:48 pm
  • Martin is fouling a bit of them off..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:49 pm
  • in 1961 the NL won in extras in the first of two All-Star games played three weeks apart, one on each coast.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:50 pm
  • Mo gives up a single. If Drew really wanted to be a dick he could have let the ball go past him and let Martin hit an in-the-park homerun.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:51 pm
  • Wow, Martin pokes one to the right side for a single. There goes the perfectness by Mo.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:51 pm
  • 1966 and 1967 (15 innings!) also decided in extras. Total fluke, Ath, there can be no other explanation.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:52 pm
  • Ohhhhhhh…he needs a DP now…or a K.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:52 pm
  • single, runners at corners with 1 out. This went from a “Yay Mo might get the win!” situation to a “Fuck me Mo is going to get the loss” situation.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:52 pm
  • Thought Young probably should’ve gotten that one..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:52 pm
  • Yuck, another guy I dislike doing something good, Miguel Tejada is very low on my list.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:52 pm
  • DOUBLE FUCKING PLAY YES!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:53 pm
  • DP. Mo is effing Mo.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:53 pm
  • Come on, Mo.
    YES.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:53 pm

    doug YF July 15, 2008, 11:53 pm
  • Brilliant.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:53 pm
  • That was nails.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:53 pm
  • Young-Quentin-Guillen-Sizemore for the 10th.

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:53 pm
  • Shit, I really need to go to sleep. About 90 minutes past my bedtime and I am on kid duty tomorrow morning…
    End this, AL.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:54 pm
  • It would have been such a terrible story if Mo had given it up in extras.
    But, y’know, he’s MARIANO RIVERA and sh*t.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:55 pm
  • Well said Devine!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:56 pm
  • I would think if the AL pulls this out Mo is a lock for the MVP, however dubious that might be, since he wriggled out of his own jam in that 10th inning. On the other hand, who is a better choice? JD Drew maybe?

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:56 pm
  • Uggla error!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:56 pm
  • The A.L. is going to win this game. Book it.

    Hudson July 15, 2008, 11:56 pm
  • Ugg-ly.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:56 pm
  • Holy shit Uggla makes another error!

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:57 pm
  • Oh, man, poor Dan Uggla.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:57 pm
  • Oh man wheels coming off for Uggla

    doug YF July 15, 2008, 11:57 pm
  • Two back to back errors by Uggla. Wow. It’s tough to get goated in such a situation..

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:57 pm
  • Oh wow. The NL sucks at fundamentals, says this inning.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:57 pm
  • Now 1st and 3rd, no outs. Uggla = ugly fielder.

    Anonymous July 15, 2008, 11:57 pm
  • GIDP, error, error for Uggla the last three balls in play. Jeez.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:58 pm
  • Guillen up next… Who after that?

    Hudson July 15, 2008, 11:59 pm
  • Just hit it out.
    For shits and giggles.

    Devine July 15, 2008, 11:59 pm
  • Cook setting up the force at home and Grady Sizemore.

    Lar July 15, 2008, 11:59 pm
  • Evan Longoria has the highest WPA of offensive players, ahead of JD Drew. Mo leading the AL pitchers. His WPA isn’t far behind Longoria and even with Drew (.285 MO, .288 Drew), so Mo would be a good choice by the math, and at home who would argue.

    SF July 15, 2008, 11:59 pm
  • Looks like it’s up to Grady

    Atheose July 15, 2008, 11:59 pm
  • IBB to Guillen.
    Sizemore on tap.

    Hudson July 15, 2008, 11:59 pm
  • God I hate listening to McCarver

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:00 am
  • Uggla’s WPA is -.391
    Someone fit the horns.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:00 am
  • BUNT!

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:00 am
  • Imagine if the A.L. wins on a wild pitch…

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:01 am
  • Whew.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:01 am
  • McCarver: Insufferable.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:01 am
  • Four-eyes behind the plate gets it right.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:01 am
  • Sizemore not clutch, but at least didn’t get doubled up.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:01 am
  • Jeez, great scoop by Gonzalez at first, lost in the shuffle of the force at home.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:02 am
  • That’s one. C’mon, c’mon, end this thing.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:02 am
  • They get one out.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:02 am
  • Longoria for MVP!

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:02 am
  • SF – do they fit WPA for fielding plays? Didn’t know that..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:02 am
  • Longoria can become the M.V.P. here with another R.B.I.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:02 am
  • Yet another ground ball force out at home. What the hey.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:03 am
  • Two groundouts, wow they’re actually getting out of trouble.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:03 am
  • Nope. Another force-out at home. 2 gone.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:03 am
  • Oof.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:03 am
  • Aw, shit. WTF, AL? Bases loaded and no out and now two down, still plugged. What is this, a Sox game?

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:03 am
  • If the A.L. doesn’t score, it’s an epic squander.
    Morneau…

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:03 am
  • Here’s our HR Derby champ..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:04 am
  • Buck: “He can win it with a hit”
    Or a walk.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:04 am
  • Come on “guy who robbed Jeter of an MVP”!

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:04 am
  • HOLY SHIT that was crazy… great play by Tejada to save the run.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:04 am
  • God damn.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:04 am
  • Funny, this looks like a Yankee inning to me.

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 12:04 am
  • Wow. I was about to go take a shower..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:04 am
  • Dan Uggla just exhaled. What a disaster for the AL.
    Who the hell is pitching?!

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:04 am
  • Zilch. Unreal. Who pitches the 11th? Fox should be teeing this stuff up, but they aren’t… Not even previewing the next inning’s batters.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:05 am
  • Well, I guess Mo won’t win the MVP, unless they really fed it to him.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:05 am
  • At least now Uggla is off the hook..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:05 am
  • Soria’s my bet.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:06 am
  • Soria was warming up, and has good stuff, so it should be Soria..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:06 am
  • Yep, here’s Soria.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:07 am
  • Let’s go, KC mofo.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:07 am
  • Soria.
    Nice ERA.
Gonzalez batting. (Fox kept that a secret for a good 30 seconds.)

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:07 am
  • If Soria holds the line, Drew will have another shot at the MVP.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:08 am
  • Leadoff single.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:08 am
  • There are plenty of pitchers left for both teams, so we shouldn’t have a tie unless it goes to 13 or 14.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:08 am
  • I smell a Wright dinger.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:08 am
  • Erk. Single.
Aw hell, it’s Wright at the plate.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:08 am
  • If Soria holds the line, Drew will have another shot at the MVP.
Even if Soria doesn’t hold the line, Drew could hit a walk-off.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:09 am
  • Wright Ks.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:09 am
  • BIG whiff.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:10 am
  • Kinsler-Navarro-Drew for the bottom of the 11th.
It must get VERY lonely if you’re the last person in the bullpen. Though if I were Tito I’d send Kazmir out there for like 5 innings. Wear that arm down!

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:10 am
  • Buck talking about the Rays possible response to a Kazmir appearance. I can’t see how a team would have a beef if Tito had to use him in the 12th or 13th inning as a last resort – surely if Tito was intending to wear out a rival’s pitcher (which would be a terrible accusation to make) he wouldn’t have waited until a 12th inning to do it, he would have done it during the innings that he knew they were going to play.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:10 am
  • Okay, that’s two.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:11 am
  • Fly out to center.
Playing “Sunglasses at Night” when Corey Hart bats: Only funny the first time.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:11 am
  • Most of Yankee Stadium cleared out. The ASG should be on a weekend.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:11 am
  • I wear my suuuuuuuuuuuunglasses at night

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:11 am
  • If Kazmir can’t pitch, why is he on the roster at all?

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:12 am
  • Wow, the seats really emptying out at the Stadium.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:12 am
  • Nice breaking ball on strike two.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:12 am
  • Soria gets it done.
    Who’s coming up?

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:13 am
  • Come on AL, win it!

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:13 am
  • Nice. Very good.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:13 am
  • Ok, JD, grab that popup and help end the game.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:13 am
  • This is the game that never ends.. hehe..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:13 am
  • Fox is unbearable. In an extra-inning game, how can they not find the 10 seconds it takes during the top of the 9th to preview who is coming up for the A.L. in the bottom half?

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:14 am
  • My dad just woke up in London (where my family lives) and turned the game on. He’s happy he gets to watch some!

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:14 am
  • Whoever is in charge of the All-Star after-parties must be going out of his/her skull.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:15 am
  • whose left to pitch? I bet they’re all wishing they hadn’t given lincecum all of those extra shots.

    Anonymous July 16, 2008, 12:15 am
  • Kinsler loop single to right-center. OK, get this over with.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:16 am
  • Kinsler singles! Bunt him over Navarro, and then let Drew take home the honor.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:16 am
  • Falls in for a hit to start the AL off.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:16 am
  • Navarro up. One one, no out.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:16 am
  • Navarro, then JDMVP.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:16 am
  • Drew/Young to follow.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:16 am
  • Not a fan of the bunt here.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:17 am
  • McCarver: “This makes sense: bunt Kinsler over to 2nd, who may then steal 3rd!”
Shut the fuck up McCarver. Trying to steal 3rd would be STUPID.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:17 am
  • Of course, he will bunt and then the game will end on a single, and I will be proven a fraud once again.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:17 am
  • Florida should have just told him to bow out.

    walein July 16, 2008, 12:17 am
  • Kinsler caught stealing. Oy.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:18 am
  • Pitch-out, Kinsler thrown out. He looked like he slowed down going into 2nd because he had such a big lead.
    Fuck.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:18 am
  • Ouch. On the pitchout and everything.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:18 am
  • Wow, replay shows him safe.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:18 am
  • Never tagged. Bad call.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:18 am
  • OOOOOOOOOOOOOO. He was safe.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:19 am
  • I guess that made up for the earlier Jeter tag, but what a crappy time to do it.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:19 am
  • Drew is going to hit a walk-off homer so it doesn’t matter at all.
    Webb warming.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:19 am
  • Walk.
    C’mon, J.D.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:19 am
  • And a walk. Come on, JD, let’s do this.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:19 am
  • Drew singles. That would have scored the run.
    Fuck.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:20 am
  • Drew singles!
The caught stealing now looms large. Grr.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:20 am
  • Up the middle, nice job moving that runner up, JD.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:20 am
  • Of course, in theory, he could’ve won the game if you assume everything else would be the same.
Now here comes Michael Young trying to win the game..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:20 am
  • Fuck. Umps gets that SB call right at second and that’s the GW hit.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:20 am
  • The ump would have had to have X-ray vision to make that call, he was in the worst possible spot to see the missed tag. He was probably in his taught position, I don’t know how he can be expected to make that call correctly.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:20 am
  • I assume everything, Lar.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:21 am
  • Young up, no idea who’s next (thanks, Fox).

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:21 am
  • How many men has the AL left on tonight?

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:21 am
  • SF – seems like as many as Yanks on a typical night..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:22 am
  • HE SLID UNDER THE FUCKING TAG GODDAMNIT!

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:22 am
  • Wow, I thought it was game over. Wow.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:22 am
  • Actually, Lar, you make a good point. That ball probably wasn’t hit deep enough to score Kinsler from second.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:22 am
  • Young singles!
But Navarro… caught at home. Frak.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:22 am
  • bang-bang
    NOT THE BALLGAME

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 12:22 am
  • Up the middle. Navarro runs, he’s out at home. Wow.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:22 am
  • Dioner Navarro is slower than Mike Stanley carrying Mike Lowell.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:22 am
  • Sigh. Fat piece of shit.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:23 am
  • He looked safe to me, live.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:23 am
  • Kinsler would’ve definitely scored on that one. Navarro is tons slower. And now here’s Quentin. A base hit will win this one.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:23 am
  • ChiSox’s Quentin’s turn.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:23 am
  • man, he caught it perfectly on the hop.

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 12:23 am
  • C’mon, my homey Q.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:23 am
  • Holy shit Youk looks like some wierd half-breed monster in that shot.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:24 am
  • [Psycho-face by Youks in the dugout.]

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:24 am
  • And the inning is over. What the.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:24 am
  • Too much.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:24 am
  • Inning over. Bleh.
How many people still in The Toilet, 5,000?

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:24 am
  • Another inning with plenty of wasted opportunities. Sherrill should be in now.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:24 am
  • I honestly don’t know, what with my parenting responsibilities, if I can keep watching. Gah.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:25 am
  • 3 singles and a walk in that inning. Zero runs.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:25 am
  • I think navarro slid in under the tag there.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:25 am
  • I think that was a blown call at home.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:25 am
  • SF, you’re invested. And if you go to bed now you won’t be able to sleep.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:26 am
  • Both big outs that inning are a classic case of “Well the ball beat the runner, so I think he’s out even if I didn’t see the tag”

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:26 am
  • Soria going 2..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:27 am
  • Al has 12 LOBs, NL has 6 LOBs.
And we’ve toppped 600 posts. Is that a record? anyone? anyone?

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:28 am
  • And if you go to bed now you won’t be able to sleep
That is not accurate. Worked the last four nights (including the weekend) until 11pm, I need sleep badly. I am going to see what happens with the next batter or two, and that might be it. Sorry to disappoint.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:28 am
  • I have to wake up in 4 1/2 hours for work. I almost want the NL to win it now. Just somebody end it.
Lazy play by Kinsler and McLoud is safe. Good call by the ump.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:29 am
  • Time to start washing baby bottles.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:29 am
  • Don’t worry, if the NL takes the lead I’m heading to bed.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:29 am
  • The umps are great at bang-bang calls, but when there is a tag, forget it. Brutal.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:29 am
  • Right, I’m going to bed. Enough’s enough.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:30 am
  • Martin, then Miggy, then Uggly.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:30 am
  • Why didn’t Morneau just tag Martin?

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:30 am
  • Dan Uggla will have a chance to win it. Wow.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:30 am
  • Uggla has a chance to redeem himself now.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:31 am
  • The NL can thank the umps for this game still being in play, big time.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:31 am
  • Really though, some golden chances blown by the AL…and some bad defense in the 12th.

    bostondreams July 16, 2008, 12:31 am
  • Everyone is an All-Star except for the umps..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:31 am
  • OK, one more strike here.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:32 am
  • Bill, there were 700 posts in the first Red Sox postseason game last year. (I was going over postseason game threads recently.) Don’t know if there were other big ones…

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:32 am
  • Uggla strikes out. I want sleep.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:32 am
  • Oh my god that breaking ball was unbelievable.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:32 am
  • That’s a K. All right fine, one more batter, I’ll watch.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:32 am
  • some golden chances blown by the AL
In the 10th, sure, but in the 11th it really looked like Navarro beat the tag, so that isn’t really a blown chance in my book – the play was made, a clutch hit, and the ump blew it, at least in my eyes.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:33 am
  • Uggla for L.V.P. (Least Valuable Player).

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:33 am
  • Sherill will come in to “save” it for AL..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:33 am
  • Dang pitching change. Go to it, Birdman.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:34 am
  • Sleeeeeeeeeep.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:34 am
  • I seem to recall at least a couple 900 or even 1,000-post threads, but maybe I imagined that.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:35 am
  • We’ve had some big threads, a couple of Sox/Yanks gamers, and also opening day from Japan this year was big, 443 comments. But 600 is a big number, no doubt.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:35 am
  • Why doesn’t he want to use Kaz again?

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:35 am
  • Zelasko is the worst charity-supporter ever. The glassy eyes, the reading as though it’s a bit of copy, the lack of chemistry with the kid.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:35 am
  • Adrian Gonzalez up at bat.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:36 am
  • Sherrill looks like a left version of Jeff Nelson, at least a little bit, which makes me instantly dislike him.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:36 am
  • 3 pitches, 3 strikes, one effing clutch out.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:36 am
  • That works. God damn it, you better win. I’m not watching another inning.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:36 am
  • PLEASE WIN THE GAME SO I CAN SLEEP.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:37 am
  • Thank you, Mr. Sherill. Three pitches.
Hoping for a first-pitch walkoff in the bottom half. Who’s coming up? Fox still won’t say.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:37 am
  • I can’t believe I am still sitting here.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:37 am
  • Nelson was indeed one of my least favorite Yankees ever. Beating up a groundskeeper, not cool under *any* circumstances.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:37 am
  • Guillen, Sizemore, Longo

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:38 am
  • Lar, they said they didn’t want to use Kazmir. Sherrill will pitch the 13th probably, and Kazmir will come out if it goes into the 14th I bet.
My god, a tie game would be an abomination. Worst possible scenario for Yankee Stadium.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:38 am
  • “Why doesn’t he want to use Kaz again?”
I think — I think — because he just pitched on what, Sunday?

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:39 am
  • I wonder if this game will be too late to break any thread records..
Carlos Guillen bounced one off the top of the wall. I thought it might go out..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:39 am
  • Wow Guillen was like 2 feet away from a walk-off! Come on Sizemore!

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:39 am
  • Wow, Guillen misses fulfilling my wish by 2 feet.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:39 am
  • Leadoff double. ALMOST out.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:39 am
  • Bingo! Guillen on second, none out. I think this is one instance where a bunt might be the right play.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:39 am
  • I hate the first name Grady.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:40 am
  • Uggla? Again?
    COME ON!!

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 12:41 am
  • Productive out for Sizemore, Uggla almost blew that one too.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:41 am
  • Guillen on third, one out. Is it possible the A.L. could squander yet another chance?

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:41 am
  • Sizemore moves the runner to third. Man on third, one out.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:41 am
  • Poor Uggla is getting all the attention over there! Groundout moves the runner to 3rd. Longoria and Morneau with chances.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:41 am
  • Works like a sacrifice. Come on, Longoria!!!

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:41 am
  • Evan Longoria must win the MVP if he wins this..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:41 am
  • Longoria has another MVP chance.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:41 am
  • SWING dammit!!

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:41 am
  • Fox graphic – AL 3 for 19 with men in scoring position. Oof.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:42 am
  • Foul ball called, but holy shit that play was amazing. Great play by Guzman and Martin.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:42 am
  • Cook’s been in there forever and has been rightly beaten several times according to the replay. Just hit a fucking sac fly.
Oooooh, that was almost a huge squander (again).

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:42 am
  • He listened to you SF–he swung.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:42 am
  • Longoria not clutch there.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:43 am
  • FUCK ME.
Can I get a wild pitch?

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:43 am
  • Hideous.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:43 am
  • Hmmm, not sure Guillen should have been running on that. Lucky break it didn’t matter.
Ugh, now a K for two outs. This is ridiculous.
    Morneau time.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:43 am
  • Kinsler will bat as Morneau will get IBB’ed.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:43 am
  • IBB.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:43 am
  • Looks like they’ll walk Morneau and Kinsler to get to Navarro.
McCarver and Buck are idiots and think they’ll pitch to Kinsler.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:44 am
  • Ya, much greater of an infield hit… except there’s a force at second. Good job guys.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:44 am
  • Kinsler…………….

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:44 am
  • As much as I would like to go to bed, I have to say I’m impressed at how hard these guys are playing in an exhibition game.

    rootbeerfloat July 16, 2008, 12:44 am
  • This Kinsler kid bugs me, looks like a cocky surfer guy with a hackysack in his back pocket.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:44 am
  • Morneau to 2nd.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:44 am
  • Okay, well, Morneau steals second.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:44 am
  • Wow, looks like they’ll pitch to Kinsler. My bad.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:45 am
  • The “idiots” were right, Ath, they are pitching to Kinsler.

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:45 am
  • We’ve been watching the second-tier All-Stars for about six innings now.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:45 am

    SF July 16, 2008, 12:45 am
  • Bedtime guys. G’night.

    Atheose July 16, 2008, 12:45 am

  • I’m going to try to take the quickest shower you’ve ever seen.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:46 am

‘kay, that’s it. I’m done. Night, all.

    rootbeerfloat July 16, 2008, 12:46 am

  • G’night everyone, great game thread, been a hoot.
    Go AL!
    No ties, Bud!

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 12:51 am

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:53 am
  • Who is up next for the A.L.? I should have the lineups memorized by now, but…

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:54 am
  • Fox grafic: teams a combined 3-27 with RISP.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:54 am
  • Navarro, JD, Young.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:54 am

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:55 am

    End?
    Please?

    Devine July 16, 2008, 12:55 am

Fox finally coughs up some names before the commercial break: Navarro, Drew, Young. Deja vu all over again.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:55 am
  • (By the way, I can now report that there is ZERO alcohol content in Corona Light — having quaffed five of ‘em during the game, with no result buzz whatsoever.)

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 12:57 am
  • Hey fellow insomniacs!

    Lar July 16, 2008, 12:57 am
  • Marmol has struggled of late.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:58 am

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 12:59 am

    Uggla messes up…again.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:00 am
  • Ugg-la, Ugg-la, naa naa naa naa, naa naa naa naa naa.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 1:01 am
  • Another error by Uggla. Is that an All-Star record? 3?

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:01 am
  • I wish to congratulate the N.L.’s pitcher on his brilliant invention of Marmoleum.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 1:01 am
  • I prefer Negra Modelo.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 1:02 am

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 1:02 am

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 1:03 am

  • My homey Quentin again with a chance.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 1:04 am

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:04 am

    rootbeerfloat July 16, 2008, 1:05 am

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:07 am
  • That was close.

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:08 am
  • McLouth takes it out to the warning track..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:08 am
  • All right, that was scary. Reminded me of my investment in the game. (Deep fly to right.)

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:08 am
  • YF’s, how much vitriol is there between the Yankee Fans and the Mets fans?
It can get really ugly here. Generally the WS and Cubs fans really hate each other.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 1:08 am

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:08 am

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:09 am

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 1:09 am
  • Not much from me, but part of it is that both teams have been awful the last few season.. or at least, awful enough by NY standards..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:10 am
  • Another fairly deep fly to right.
    Kazmir warms.
    Tejada up.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:10 am
  • “We hope it counts” – now that’s a slogan!
    Sherrill for MVP?

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:11 am
  • Okay, a 1-2-3 inning. Kind of a scary one, but still.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:11 am

Bud Selig must be crapping his pants right now, though, so that’s cool.

  • Jackie! Nice to “see” you.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:12 am
  • At least it was quick. Can’t believe I’m still following this nonsense.
(It’s all Navarro’s fault, if you ask me — if not for that error throw to 2nd in the 8th, the A.L. might have won it 3-2 in 9 innings.)

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 1:13 am
  • Brandon Webb to come in, after throwing 100+ pitches on Sunday.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:14 am
  • >>>If only Tito didn’t waste KRod on one out.
I don’t blame Tito. If he hadn’t brought in Mo there, and the A.L. had walked off in the 9th, we’d never have heard the end of it from the media.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 1:14 am
  • Webb, eh? Two pitchers who pitched on Sunday are getting in the game (if the AL doesn’t win it here).
    Effing Tejada.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:14 am
  • One gone (Guillen).

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 1:14 am

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:15 am

  • Joe sez longest AS game is … ah, forget it. you’re all watching anyway.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 1:16 am

    2 balls, 2 strikes.
    3 strikes.

  • Hey Devine! Back atcha! (woulda been commenting more, but I ran out of battery around the 9th and was too lazy to plug back in until now…)
So, I’ve heard that when PR guys say that players are experiencing “flu-like symptoms” it often means they’re hungover… think this is why we’re not seeing Lincecum?

    Jackie (SF) July 16, 2008, 1:16 am
  • Yankees Stadium doesn’t want its day to be over! It’s all because of the Mystique and Aura!
    I’m close to done..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:17 am
  • 15 innings.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:18 am
  • And Fox has the results of the MVP internet vote. I love Fox — Zelasco, Kennedy, O’Reilly.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 1:18 am
  • That’s a pathetic swing by Longoria.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:18 am
  • To the 15th.
Somewhere under Yankee Stadium, a ton of shrimp cocktail is spoiling.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 1:19 am
  • Kaz.. hehe..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:19 am
  • Bedtime for this Bonzo. Let’s hope JD gets abnother shot to win it in the bottom of the 16th.
Good night everyone. I hope you don’t make it to 900 posts.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 1:20 am
  • Kaz against Uggla.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:20 am
  • I guess I’m being a traitor to my league, but I would kind of like to see Uggla win it here after all those errors. Poor guy.

    Jackie (SF) July 16, 2008, 1:21 am
  • “Somewhere under Yankee Stadium, a ton of shrimp cocktail is spoiling.”
Doubtful. It’s being kept cold by an Ortiz jersey.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 16, 2008, 1:21 am
  • Truth is, whatever rules you want to put it, any game can go to the say, 20th inning. They really should have contingency for that, instead of err.. this “maybe it counts” stuff..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:21 am
  • Kaz destroyed Uggla.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:21 am
  • Ha ha, Uggla. You suck.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:22 am
  • Uggla: Three errors, three Ks.
How’d this guy get on the roster again?

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 1:22 am
  • 2nd in the NL in homers or something. Dude is just awful today though.

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:23 am
  • Two down.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:23 am
  • Poor, poor guy.

    Jackie (SF) July 16, 2008, 1:24 am
  • Uh so is McCarver implying that Francona will forfeit the game if Kazmir goes over his pitch count?

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:24 am
  • Two.

    Hudson July 16, 2008, 1:24 am
  • Wright scares me every time.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:24 am
  • Kaz is losing it a bit. I guess that’s one way to end the game.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:25 am
  • Pretty hideous walk from Kaz there, but maybe not pitching to him?

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:25 am
  • Kaz gets out of that one. I should get out of this one.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:26 am
  • To the bottom. Won’t anyone provide some release?

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:26 am
  • I know it’s old, but this commercial with Lou Piniella fake-screaming gets me every time. Especially when he chucks 3d base at the end. Heh.

    Jackie (SF) July 16, 2008, 1:28 am
  • Lidge and McCann in.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:28 am
  • A base hit. Hmmmmmm.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:30 am
  • Morneau leads the game with a single..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:30 am
  • Everyone wants to go home except for Ludwick.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:31 am
  • Oh man. That is a play by Ludwig.

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:31 am
  • Darn, that was nearly another hit. Nice play, you fucker.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:32 am
  • spelling?

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:32 am
  • Navarro singles, and Drew has a chance to win the damn MVP again..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:33 am
  • Drew up with one down and the winning run at 2nd…

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:33 am
  • TWO base hits.
This will probably end up the same way as the last 4 innings that started like this.

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:33 am
  • lol Drew’s 3rd chance to win MVP.

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:33 am
  • Full count.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:35 am
  • This is possibly the most exciting game I stopped caring about.. yet I’m still here.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:36 am
  • Walk. Loaded. 1 out. Young.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:36 am
  • Drew is a classy guy, giving Young another chance.

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:36 am
  • GAME!!!!!!!!

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:37 am
  • AL!!!!

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:37 am
  • Thanks Lidge! Effing finally.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:37 am
  • Thank you god! (oops, guess it is a bad night to be an atheist after all)

    Jackie (SF) July 16, 2008, 1:37 am
  • Wow. Wow.
That play at the plate couldn’t have been any closer.
    Wow.

    attackgerbil July 16, 2008, 1:38 am
  • A slightly better throw and he would’ve been out.

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:38 am
  • ag is here? hehe..

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:39 am
  • Okay, I will have the clever comments later.. good night everybody!

    Lar July 16, 2008, 1:39 am
  • Nearly 5 hours of this shit. God, I’m already falling asleep. Good night everybody. What a ballbuster.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:39 am
  • Yeah.. I’ve been watching and lurking.

    attackgerbil July 16, 2008, 1:40 am
  • Yahoo Gamechannel has decided that Drew is the AL player of the game. Let’s see if the MVP voting agrees!

    Jackie (SF) July 16, 2008, 1:41 am
  • Drew’s got my vote.

    attackgerbil July 16, 2008, 1:43 am
  • Drew gets the Tahoe, aw. :) Three of the ten fans left there have the energy to boo him.

    Jackie (SF) July 16, 2008, 1:48 am
  • MVP! MVP! MVP!
    Drew.

    Devine July 16, 2008, 1:48 am
  • heyyy the MVP is Drew!
“Ready to give anyone a ride home?”
    awwwkward

    doug YF July 16, 2008, 1:48 am
  • The broadcast ended with a brief, silent video tribute to Murcer.

    attackgerbil July 16, 2008, 1:52 am
  • I guess I don’t understand the Yankee fan booing of Drew when he won the MVP. I mean, without him, Young’s fly ball is just an out, and we’re headed to the 16th inning. Of course, without him, the AL loses in nine, and they all could have gotten home much earlier. Maybe THAT’S why they were booing!

    Paul SF July 16, 2008, 2:09 am
  • props to tito for the handling of all the special needs. whether it was the handling of respect or the handling of pitch limits, tito pulled the perfect strings. it’s a shame how the fans acted, but what were we to honestly expect. i wish someone on the telecast would have made mention of the sox contingency uniformly failing to acknowledge the crowd with the customary hat tip. hopefully that will get picked up in print tomorrow.
