Woke up late, didn’t realize the game today was a FOX affair. Here’s your game thread. Sox lead 2-1 in the fourth.

  • Scoring summary: Dye HR in the seonc puts CHW up 1-0, Manny double, Trot single sets up a Mike Lowell 2-run double (what else?). Crisp singles, then steals second to remove the DP possibility and sets up Mirabelli for an RBI groundout to score Lowell.
Good steal by Crisp. The Mirabelli grounder likely woulda been a double play. Instead it’s another run. He doesn’t get the RBI, but he deserves it.

  • I tune in the game just in time to see Beckett give up a 2 run homer. He is very discouraging.

  • nice one, Josh. way to go meat!

    TonyC.25 July 8, 2006, 2:46 pm
  • These home runs are very srustrating indeed. Jermaine Dye = Carl Crawford = Vernon Wells. I hate them all…

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 2:49 pm
  • Almost as frustrating to have absolutely no baseball on the local Fox affiliate. Bastards… I guess we’re getting the 3:05 Houston game…

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 2:50 pm
  • Anyone know why Belli is playing and not Tek? Is this sliump related, injury related…?

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 2:54 pm
  • Fortunately, Garcia doesn’t look very good, either.

    Tom sf July 8, 2006, 2:58 pm
  • PAPI!!!!!

    TonyC.25 July 8, 2006, 3:00 pm
  • PAPI!!!!!!!!!!! Two-run homer!!!! Unbelievable!!!

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 3:00 pm
  • Eight home runs in eight days. When’s the last time a Sox slugger has been this hot? Ever?
Now let’s see if Josh can hold the lead this time…

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 3:04 pm
  • lets hope J. Beckett Lerouche doesn’t hand it back.

    TonyC.25 July 8, 2006, 3:05 pm
  • The key is not allowing any baserunners in front of Thome…
    Which Beckett promptly does…

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 3:07 pm
  • This doesn’t bode well… Runner on 3rd, one out for Thome… Yuck…

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 3:11 pm
  • And Beckett uncorks a wild pitch to score the runner… WTF??

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 3:12 pm
  • Ad the Thome homer. Freakin A, Josh!!!!

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 3:13 pm
  • This is officially a poor start from Beckett… He should be better than this. Three freaking home runs and a wild pitch score all the runs. That’s horrible…

  • is it just me or has this bottom of the 5th re-inflated Buck and McCarver?

  • Sox take the lead back on Youk’s single, now M-Lor walks. Let’s go, Big Papi!!

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 3:32 pm
  • Well, I guess he can’t be Superman all the time… Still, the Sox have a lead that Beckett really needs to hold here… Sox have yet to go a full inning with the lead — Josh keeps giving it up the very next half-inning…

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 3:37 pm
  • Off to work… Yopu’ll have to carry on without me!

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 3:38 pm
  • The vaunted White Sox pitching staff is not looking very good thus far in this series. 8-5 Red Sox going to the bottom of the 7th.

    Tom sf July 8, 2006, 4:03 pm
  • Bases loaded, 0 out, Thome up. Nice going, Beckett.

    Tom sf July 8, 2006, 4:12 pm
  • But Lopez comes on to get the K, then Hansen induces a foulout and line out. No runs!! Wow. Huuuge inning!

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 4:30 pm
  • Sox load the bases, no outs, and get just one run, but a 9-5 lead is quite nice…

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 4:43 pm
  • Paul, if you’re in this thread right now I meant homer as “zealous advocate of your team”, not “irrational chowdah head”. I was just kiddin around, no need to get testy. I think you analyze things very well. No hard feelings. =P

  • bottom of the 9th, 1 out….

  • pop up…out. GAME OVER, woo hoo!!

    TonyC.25 July 8, 2006, 5:16 pm
  • Thanks, BY :-)
Great win for the Sox — at least for the offense and bullpen. Beckett needs to get his act together…

    Paul SF July 8, 2006, 5:21 pm
  • Congratulations, Sox. Ortiz is putting on a display of power for the ages.
    How’s about a D-Rays/Yanks game thread? :)

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:19 pm
  • Gerbil pulls a coup and hijacks the already-ended Sox thread as now a New York/Tampa Bay thread.
Notable from the first inning: Jorge gunned down Crawford on the attempted steal.
    It’s top two.
Jorge hits into a 643 DP. Hard shot made the play automatice.
Bernie up. He’s ahead 1-0. Takes low 2-0. In the dirt for 3-0.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:35 pm
  • Bernie walks. It’s two outs with Bernie on first to Andy Phillips, from whom Kazmir induces a pop out to center to end the inning.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:36 pm
  • Wang induces a groundout to 3 to record the first out of the bottom of 2. Cantu up.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:39 pm
  • Wang is ahead on Cantu 1-2. Sinker is in the dirt for ball 2. The 2-2: Hit on the ground to Jeter who throws to first for the second out.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • Nice pitch from Wang. Sinker that Gomes swings over for strike one. The 0-1 is on the ground at short, and it’s E6 as Jeter throws it away. That’s his seventh of the year. Phillips made a great try for it, but really had no chance. Ouch.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • Gomes is on second after the errant throw. It’s 0-1 to Wigginton, who lines it to right. A charging Kevin Thompson makes a catch on the run basket-style at the knee to end the inning. Nice grab.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:44 pm
  • Cairo/Thompson/Cabrera coming up for NY.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:46 pm
  • Cantu makes a nice running grab in shallow right to rob Cairo of a single.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:46 pm
  • Thompson is behind 1-2. He beats out a slow roller hit in no-man’s land between the pitcher and 1st. One out to Melky.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:48 pm
  • Melky strokes a single to right, advancing Thompson to second. First and second to Jeter with one away. Inside for ball one.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:49 pm
  • Kazmir almost picks Thompson off of second. He gets back just in time. Jeter fouls it back to make it 1-1.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:50 pm
  • Jeter gets suckered by a pitch from Kazmir in the dirt for 1-2. Upstairs for ball two. The 2-2: low for a full count. Check swing, didn’t go.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:52 pm
  • Jeter chases a breaking pitch at the ankles and inside to be sat down. Nice pitch.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:53 pm
  • Giambi up. He’s behind 0-1. Strike at the knees to make it 0-2. It’s strike 3 looking as Kazmir brings a beautiful breaking pitch for a strike. Still no score as we head to the bottom of the third.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:55 pm
  • Damon Hollins steps in for Tampa. ARod shows off his arm, throwing from his knees across the diamond.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:57 pm
  • Josh Paul in for TB. He’s retired on a roller to second.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 7:58 pm
  • Julio Lugo takes a weak check swing at a called strike one. Wang loses the handle on the 0-1 and throws it over Lugo’s head. The 1-1: strike down the middle, Lugo taking all the way. The 1-2: fastball in the dirt for ball 2. The 2-2: Wang JUST misses on the outside corner to make it full. The payoff: jammed on the hands and pulled foul up third.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 8:01 pm
  • Another full count: hard grounder at Cairo, fielded 4-3 to end the inning.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 8:01 pm
  • attackgerbil = touching the void.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 8:02 pm
  • Kazmir faces ARod to lead off the top of four. Check swing on a low pitch for ball one. Kazmir is doing a great job of working the plate low.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 8:04 pm
  • ARod is at 2-2 in the count: he takes inside to make it full.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 8:05 pm
  • The payoff: ARod swings over a very nice curve by Kazmir to retire Alex swinging. Posada up.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 8:07 pm
  • Kazmir looks brilliant as he K’s Philips on another unhittable curve tailing in towards the righty hitters. Looks like a strike, ends up inside at your ankles. Brutal stuff.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 8:11 pm
  • Okay, I’m checking out. Hope any YFs watching get to see a W here. Good game so far. gerbil signs off, for now.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2006, 8:12 pm
  • Anyone just see that Melky play in foul territory?!! WEB GEM!

    bloodyank78 July 8, 2006, 8:38 pm
  • Sorry the YFs didn’t get a game thread today. The thought to check earlier this evening flashed briefly through my mind, but didn’t stop long enough for me to actually do anything about it, and by the time I checked my email to see AG alerting me to the fact, it was too late.
We’ll try to do better from now on. On the other hand, I believe that evens the threadless games to one apiece.
