An Even Dozen? Angels-Sox ALDS Gamer III

Being a Red Sox fan all these years produces some weird sort of disease that cannot be cured just by winning a couple World Series.

How is it that I was more confident of a Red Sox series win after Game 1 than I am now? The Sox are obviously in the best possible position, with the best possible choice taking the mound. Yet I worry. I evision Josh Beckett failing miserably, then Jon Lester being outpitched, and suddenly we’re heading back to California tied at two games apiece.

It’s silly, I know, but as we’ve said before, a lifetime of woe doesn’t simply go away. Here’s to a quick, easy victory tonight, so we can start worrying about Tampa Bay.

  • Of course, in contrast, we’ve got Mike Scioscia saying, definitively: “We’re not getting eliminated tonight.”
Which makes me believe they are, in fact, getting eliminated tonight.

  • GO SOX!!! I hope I can chime in tonight, these late games (combined with 40th birthday festivities) have conspired to keep me from both posting and staying awake late enough to see the contests.
    Man, I wish I was at Fenway…

    SF October 5, 2008, 6:59 pm
  • I’ll be joining a friend to watch the game from his house, so I’ll be out. The Sox usually lose when we watch them; in fact, the only game the Sox have won when we’ve watched them together was Game 1 of the World Series last year, so I maybe we’ve got good playoff mojo…

  • Thanks for reinforcing a stereotype the media loves. How about talking for yourself and clearly stating you don’t talk for all red sox fans.

    dave October 5, 2008, 7:24 pm
  • What stereotype? Worry?
I’m worried too-these guys are for real, and they’re not rolling over because of things Donnie Moore did 24 years ago.
Worry just shows a healthy respect for the Angels’ abilities.

  • 6 baserunners and only 1 run for the Angels. Hopefully Beckett will settle down.

  • What a break.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:33 pm
  • Holy shit that was awesome. I almost feel sorry for the Angels.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 8:34 pm
  • I know that there is this rule against the official scorer calling that an error, but is there any play where a guy doesn’t touch the ball that deserved to be an error more than that one? Why should those runs count as earned for Saunders, who surely doesn’t deserve them.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:34 pm
  • I should say “rule”, since it is unwritten.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:35 pm
  • Oh. My. God. That was unreal. Crazy, crazy break.

I don’t. Whatever makes Scoscia unhappy makes me happy.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:35 pm
  • Beckett is off. I think Tito should be warming someone – he’s clearly not right – command not really there, just doesn’t look right. I think Buck Martinez said he looked fine, but we’re watching two different games apparently.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:37 pm
  • Hunter didn’t swing there. Bad call, but we’ll take it.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:40 pm
  • Lots’o pitches on both sides. Starters may be gone by the fifth, if not earlier.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:45 pm
  • Beckett looks OK to me, I’m sure he is a bit rusty from having a couple of days off. His pitch count is high, but the pen should be very well rested.

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 8:46 pm
  • CRAP!!!!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 8:47 pm
  • When Mike Napoli hits a ball to the moon you know your pitcher doesn’t have it. Tito, get someone up NOW. This game is still way winnable.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:47 pm
  • I had started posting that his breaking pitches looked OK, but deleted it when I saw the pitch count, then he leaves one out over the plate…

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • Napoli did have 20 jacks this year FWIW.

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 8:50 pm
  • Maybe Beckett can scrape five innings, but I have a feeling it will be with five or six runs on the board for Anaheim.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • Great hit by Napoli. On that pitch I kept thinking “Don’t throw fastball, he’s expecting fastball” so when I saw the curve I was happy… for a split second.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • 2005 Papi would have put that one in the bleachers. What the hell happened there? Terrible, terrible pitch from Saunders.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:52 pm
  • Hell, 2004-2007 Papi would have put that out.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:52 pm
  • Saunders is leaving everything up, I wish the Sox would jump on him.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:52 pm
  • Another HANGER to Youkilis, who stares. The Sox aren’t taking advantage.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:53 pm

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • Blech.

    SF October 5, 2008, 8:57 pm
  • Seriously, am I the only one watching Josh Beckett look terrible? The announcers keep harping on how he looks fluid, no problem. I don’t see it.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:03 pm
  • And now Beckett does a poor job covering first, and Tex reaches.
Seriously, this is a three-run deficit waiting to happen. I guess I am alone in this thought.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:08 pm
  • SF – he looks inconsistent to me.

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • The impatient, swing-happy Angels are working counts, making him strain, waiting him out. This is a sure sign that he isn’t right – that his location is off, the movement isn’t there, the velocity isn’t as scary.
    He’s not right.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:10 pm
  • Pen’s up, I think he covered as well as he could, the ball was hit in a tough place.

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:12 pm
  • Train wreck, this is going to be a train wreck really soon without a bit of luck.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:12 pm

I think we might see the pen next inning.

  • GOT BLESS PEDROIA!!!
    /channeling Ath!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:13 pm

Lester’s going tomorrow if necessary, right?

    stuck working October 5, 2008, 9:14 pm
  • Woohoo! Almost had a heart attack there. That should be all for Beckett.
I’ve been watching in the other room in front of the big screen because it was good luck last year, and so far this year too. Hopefully Beckett will be sharper in his next start, assuming there is one this season.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 9:15 pm
  • Daisuke … er Beckett has 90 plus pitches through 4 innings with 4 walks.

    SoxFan October 5, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • OK, if Beckett is done, who comes in for long relief? Byrd, Wake – neither instills confidence.
    Lowery with the single

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • SW, yeah Lester is pitching tomorrow, still plenty of time to make it “not necessary”

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:18 pm
  • MDC one/two, JM, Oki, Paps. That is, if the Sox end up ahead.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:18 pm

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:19 pm
  • Friggin Tek!!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:19 pm

    dc October 5, 2008, 9:19 pm
  • ;)

    dc October 5, 2008, 9:20 pm
  • What’s that supposed to mean, dc?

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:20 pm
  • So apparently Beckett threatened to skin Tito alive if he doesn’t let him start the 5th. I guess I’m cool with that, as long as there’s a short leash.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 9:21 pm
  • Are you making a crack, or are you seriously implying that I am here because the Sox are winning? Can you clarify?

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:22 pm
  • Beckett out for the lower part of the order, I suppose. Not sure I love this move, but Tito’s bought himself a very long leash with his post-season pitching handling these last few years.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:24 pm
  • Not to jump in between the two, but I think that dc means we should be grateful that the Sox are in the post season (which I think most of us are) and we shouldn’t take the micro view of the Sox.

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:24 pm
  • NASTY HIGH HEAT! – maybe he is pissed!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:25 pm
  • GET. HIM. OUT. NOW!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:26 pm
  • Napoli again.
I don’t understand why Beckett came back out.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:26 pm
  • Another hard hit ball, Kendrick singles up the middle past Lowrie. What more does Tito need to see? I mean, IT’S A WINNABLE GAME TERRY.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:27 pm
  • Napoli with another homerun!
Hopefully, Francona has finished his nap and woken up by now.

    SoxFan October 5, 2008, 9:27 pm
  • Kendrick with the single, he’s looked the fool up to now, Beckett is toast. Where is the short leash Terry

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:28 pm
  • Nice play by Coco!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:29 pm
  • TIto has been tremendous managing in the postseason, particularly his pitching management, but this one is befuddling. Beckett hasn’t had jack shit since the first inning (at least to me he didn’t) and he’s riding him like he’s new meat up from AAA in the second game of a doublehader after the first game was a slugfest and the bullpen was wasted.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:30 pm
  • Great play by Coco, almost doubled him off. Seriously, Beckett must have threatened Tito with a knife to stay out here this long.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 9:30 pm
  • “He was doubled up but Youkilis couldn’t handle the throw”
Uh, the ball hit the runner. What’s he supposed to do, Buck, use that secret octopus tentacle and reach around Kendrick?

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:31 pm
  • just kidding sf…you saw the smiley, so relax…i saw your explanation for not being around…i’m allowed to have fun with you guys even though my team sucks and isn’t in it, i think…i’m fairly sure you guys would be poking at us…

    dc October 5, 2008, 9:31 pm
  • Inning over, thankfully. That better be it for Beckett.
Not a good job at all, he was lucky to only allow four.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:32 pm
  • OK, he’s done now right?!?!?! Come on Tito, get MDC up and throwing now!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:32 pm
  • no prob, dc, I assumed you were kidding which is why I didn’t respond and wanted to make sure.
I don’t know how we can be expected to stay up for those west coast games, particularly those of us with two little kids (and also a birthday celebration one night!).
Tonight won’t be too hard to weather, other than what appears to be a negative result at the moment.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:34 pm
  • “…Beckett hasn’t had jack shit since the first inning …”
maybe tito has been seduced by the 6 k’s, sf…dunno, i don’t think beckett is that bad right now…pitch count might be an issue though…i think the geniuses at tbs/tnt said he’s over 1500…

    dc October 5, 2008, 9:34 pm
  • “…no prob, dc…”
…thanks for understanding, sf…i gotta have some fun…this season has been a stinker for me…

    dc October 5, 2008, 9:35 pm

    dc October 5, 2008, 9:37 pm
  • This ump does a weird fist-pump after close pitches, I keep thinking he’s calling a strike but it’s not. It’s confusing as all hell.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:37 pm
  • Looks a bit low to me too Dustin!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • Oof, Pedroia started to first on a close one that the ump calls a strike. Borderline, looked off the plate to me and based on previous calls. Oh well. Maybe he’ll get a hit now!

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • Jacoby – game changer on the bases, even when he doesn’t steal.

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:39 pm
  • That was a good pitch from Saunders, jamming Pedro. 3-2…

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:39 pm
  • Shit. Pedroia doesn’t get the job done. Ellsbury stuck at second after fouling out to Napoli.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:40 pm
  • Need Jacoby to run a little…probably not happening with Tizzle at the plate though.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:41 pm
  • Come on Papi, get one here!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:41 pm

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:41 pm

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:42 pm
  • Saunders win’s this one

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:42 pm

    Come on Youk!

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 9:43 pm
  • Papi looks awful, strikes out on three pitches.
This will be a deflating failure if Ellsbury gets stranded at second with 3-4-5 having had their hacks.
Very frustrating so far, I think that bad call to Pedroia has cost the Sox quite a good deal here.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:43 pm
  • Seems like Youk should have more than 2 hits this series. He’s due?

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:43 pm
  • Sorry, 2-3-4.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:43 pm

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:44 pm
  • YOUK! YOUK! YOUK!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:45 pm
  • And of course he CRUSHES one to center as soon as I hit “post”! Double ties the game!

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:45 pm
  • Thanks goodness for Youk, that would have been a very tough squander.

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:45 pm

    SF October 5, 2008, 9:48 pm
  • Did Saunder and Napoli even realize Figgins was there?

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 9:49 pm

Come on Lowell, this is a good time for your first hit of the series.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 9:52 pm

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 10:35 pm

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:35 pm
  • Pedroia needs to rub some Flomax on his bat, increase the flow.

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:36 pm
  • Ellsbury needs to be more aggressive. Why the f*ck hasn’t he stolen 2nd yet?

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 10:36 pm
  • Dunno, Ath, good question. He’s been planted every time he’s been on base. Is Napoli a solid defensive catcher?

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:38 pm
  • I remember the days when Darren Oliver coming into a game was a sure sign that things were already over. Now he’s pitching high-lev late in a tight playoff game? Someone check hell for ice.

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:39 pm
  • Gah, Papi watches a total floater.

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:39 pm

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 10:40 pm
  • Fuck.

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:40 pm
  • What a terrible slide by Ellsbury, he was safe by a mile, no need to do what he did, why the short slide?

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:41 pm
  • BALLS!

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 10:41 pm
  • Horrible slide by Ellsbury. Had the throw beat by a mile.
Papi walks, time for some Youk magic.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 10:42 pm

I think Scoscia is amazingly overrated, for the record.

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:42 pm
  • I’m on my second double Captain and Coke, may need a third.

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 10:43 pm

I actually kind of like him, I think he’s very levelheaded in crucial situations, kinda like Tito.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 10:43 pm

  • Scoscia is very overrated. Seems to get it done in the season, though much of that is the other AL West teams, but in the post season he is not a good manager

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 10:44 pm
  • I’m on my second double Captain and Coke, may need a third.
I’ve been taking a shot of cheap Burnett’s vodka per Sox strikeout, plus one per run scored. I’m teetering on buzzed/drunk.
    Come on Youk!

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 10:44 pm
  • This is also looking like the bottom of the lineup(ish) in the eighth and ninth. Grrr.
    Come on, Youk!!!

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:45 pm
  • Shit at-bat. This game is ticking me off. Lots of bad fundamental baseball by the Sox tonight, very frustrating.

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:46 pm
  • It’s not Soscia’s fault his team sucks in the postseason. He usually does as good of a job as possible with his Angels.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 10:47 pm
  • Oh, and great pitch there by Shields. Pedroia/Ortiz should bat in the 9th, so I feel pretty good right now. Oki in for the 8th, or Masterson?

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 10:48 pm
  • I find Scoscia self-important and an over-manager. I hate 32 pitching changes per game.
Basically any manager that I think could put on a “LaRussa” shirt and wouldn’t look inappropriately dressed annoys me.

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:49 pm

    Brownie October 5, 2008, 10:52 pm

    BillsBurgSF October 5, 2008, 10:55 pm
  • Aw crap, Lowell can’t dig out a liner from Teixeira, now Vlad coming to the plate. Does Oki stay in?

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:56 pm
  • That’s a ball a healthy Lowell gets, I am pretty sure.

    SF October 5, 2008, 10:56 pm

    Please get this out Justin.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 10:57 pm

  • Drew supposedly available if needed.
Sox have used as many pitchers as the Angels have. How is that overuse? I’m just looking at this series though, not the regular season.
In any case, Tito gets a lot of flak for not pulling pitchers sooner. So Scoscia might not be too bad.

At first I didn’t like Tito’s confidence in Masterson this series, but I’m liking it now. Get the lead please?

  • Nice Billsburg, I’ve got an easy day at work tomorrow so I don’t mind going in hungover. I’m a lowly lab technician so I don’t have many presentations. I do own my own website design company though, so if anyone needs a website or knows anyone who does have them email spotswooddesign@gmail.com.
Sorry for the self promotion, but I couldn’t help it. I heart vodka.

    Atheose October 5, 2008, 11:04 pm
  • Huge boost for Masterson’s stock on the Sox. Getting the call in a position like that, against Vald, shows the level of confidence (and the sox future) Tito has in him.

    Tek-Crisp-Ellsbury for the 9th.

I had Sam Adams Octoberfest for the first two games, cause it was lucky last year. Got lazy and bought a cheap bottle of Burnetts Cherry Vodka for this game though. If we lose tonight I’ll be sure to get Octoberfest after work tomorrow.

    Hudson October 6, 2008, 12:12 am
  • The truth is, the Sox shouldn’t be in this game at all — Beckett was at 60%, and the Sox bats have been pretty silent. This is a tie thanks to a massive, simultaneous brainfart by three Angels fielders in the 1st inning. (I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a play like that, a three-run misplayed pop-up.)
Time to capitalize on the Angels’ sloppy play, and get a little rest before the next step…
