An Ovation Is In Order: DRays-Sox Gamer VIII

Following the remarkable performance by Tim Wakefield last night, Jon Lester makes his return to the mound at Fenway for the first time in over a year tonight as the Red Sox face Scott Kazmir and the SatanFish.  Lester has not recorded a decision in his last three starts after winning his season debut, his most recent appearance a short outing against the Halos eventually won by the Sox.

  • Wow.. Where is everyone?

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:05 pm
  • Manny out tryign to stretch a single for out number three. Idiot. David was alreayd safe at third. Now instead of corners with two outs for Mike “RBI” Lowell, th einnign is over.
    Vomit

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:10 pm
  • Sorry, I was cooking. Lester looking solid so far.
Oh, and Karstens for the Yankees gets knocked out of the game after 3.0 innings pitched. O’s up 6-0.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • Youk singles in the 4th… he hit the ball too hard though. Would have been a double otherwise.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 8:27 pm
  • Lester got into a little trouble last inning thanks mostly to Carl Crawford, who is one of those real good players playign for a bad team.
I’d feel more confident if we weren’t facing Scott “Sox Killer” Kazmir.

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:29 pm
  • Tek Ks. I hate Kazmir. One on and two down, 1-0 Rays.
Come on guys.. if you cant get runs at leats hurry kazmir out of the game!

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:30 pm
  • Coco Ks. 71 pitches through 4 for him. 69 for Lester.
If we can JUUUUST give him SOME trouble next inning we may be able to get him out by the 6th

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:33 pm
  • Johnny Gomes smokes a ball to left field, but it’s right at Manny. Whew. 1 out in the 5th.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 8:36 pm
  • Here we go again… Yet another high-quality start by the rotation… put in jeopardy by the offense. WTF?

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • That was a nice running basket catch by Coco.

    attackgerbil August 14, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • Scott Kazmir will follow me to my grave and heckle the mourners. Geez, I hate that guy. Is it too late in the game to ask the Sox to really knock the snot out of him for once?

    FenSheaParkway August 14, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • Another hard hit ball, but Coco makes it look easy. An easy ground ball ends the inning.
Also, Daniel Cabrera has only allowed 1 hit in 4 innings to the Yankees. About damn time their offense got cold.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • With Lester at 82 pitches after 4-and-2/3rds innings, the probability of a Gagne appearance tonight seems to be rising rapidly.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • 1-2-3 inning from Lester.
Come on guys… I’d liek abunch of runs, but I’ll even settle for one and the starter being knocked out.

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Attackgerbil, thanks for the compliment :-) Always nice to bridge the gap between enemy teams. Though I’m assuming you’re watching the Sox because the Yanks are, well… yeah.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 8:41 pm
  • Dont say awful awful things Hudson

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • I imagien gerbil’s flipping. If I had MLBtv I would.
    Know thy enemy.

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • Flipping back and forth that is…

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:43 pm
  • We haven’t seen Tavarez in a while… I imagine he’ll be the one eating up an inning or two.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 8:44 pm
  • Wily pops up but at least he didnt do it on the first pitch. 5 more pitches taken away from Scott. If Lugo and Pedroia can drain him a bit.. well I’ll settle for that

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:45 pm
  • Delcarmen could get an inning or twoo as well.
I cant wiat until the roster expands and we can call Javier back up alogn with Ellsbury

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:46 pm
  • Kazmir has struck out half the hitters, 7 K’s after 14 outs. I’m REALLY going to hate when this kid is a Yankee.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • Lugo Ks.. 5 more pitches.

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • Pedroia gets a ground-ball single. Come on guys, 2-out rally time!

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • I agree Atheose. Hopefully we cna get Santana in retaliation.

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:48 pm
  • This is aggravating. When can he get out of the game?

no sleep til brooklyn SF August 14, 2007, 8:48 pm
  • DAMMIT DAVID?! First pitch? ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?
    SCREW THIS!!! SCREW IT!

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • 84 pitches for Kazmir. One or two more innigns for him at this rate.

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • “I’m REALLY going to hate when this kid is a Yankee.”
Speaking of awful things to say. Yikes.

    FenSheaParkway August 14, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • Remidn em why we got Gange instead of Dye?

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • I think so far Im most mad at Manny for gettign tossed otu at 2nd so far in this game.
That innnign could have been alot different
Papi gets secodn place in suck for swinging at the first ptich

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • Quick inning for Lester. 91 pitches now. If it were anyone else Id sayhe has another inning left in him.

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • Well I’ve heard that Steinbrenner loves Kazmir. Since he lives down in Tampa he probably sees them a lot, so it wouldn’t surprise me.
Lester is through 6, 91 pitches. Hopefully he can get some run support and go out for the 7th.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 8:55 pm
  • Yanks down 8-0 in the 6th, O’s been playing well. I guess when you see Gagne, it builds your confidence a little.

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • The Yanks are hemmorraging runs now. 8-0 Os. Yanks havent gone a single inning since the first without giving upa t least 1 run

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • Fin Manny. Dont help us. Dont even build his pitch count you jerk.

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:58 pm
  • By the way, I rely on you guys to know what happens in the sox game. I live in NYC so I ony get YES with Michael Kay, shoot me in the face. Tejada just got drilled.

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 8:58 pm
  • The ground-out trifecta! At least Jon’s matching almost pitch-for-pitch. Some runs, please?
And that wouldn’t surprise me at all about Steinbrenner (or at least someone on the Yankees) digging Kazmir. One of the NY teams has to know he’s good. Now excuse me while I go stick my fingers in an egg beater.

    FenSheaParkway August 14, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • Et tu, Mikey?

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • By the way has Kazmir ever pitched poorly against the Sox? EVER? Why wouldn’t Stenibrenner give this guy as much money as he wanted?

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Look on the bright side: the Orioles have the bases loaded with 0 outs, and Aubrey Huff is up. A home run here would give him TWO grand slams in the same game!

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Gameday Kris. GameDay rules. I live in pennsylvania.
Youk Ks but at least has a semblance of an at bat. 95 pitchs for Kaz

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Holy potatoes, Lester makes a great jumping catch to rob a base hit. Come on guys, get this kid some run support.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • Thanks who ever recommended gameday. 9-0 yanks. kinda like that right now. about time someone beat up on them lets go sox score something.

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • Lester allows just three Rays to reach base in 7 innings, and the Sox are losing? Argh.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:08 pm
  • BULLPEN! ITS THE D-RAY BULLPEN! THANK GOD!

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 9:08 pm
  • A Devil Ray reliever! Thank you jesus!
    Let the onslaught begin.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Dionysus and Atheose you better be knocking on some wood

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • Tek leads off with his second walk of the day. Nice. Now, capitalize!

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • Varitek draws a lead-off walk. Woohoo!
Sorry Kris, don’t worry… the mediocrity of the Tampa bullpen is a universal constant. No amount of talk could jinx the runs that will inevitably be scored here on out.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • Coco attempts a bunt, nothing doing, strike one.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:13 pm
  • Tek draws a walk. Coco bunts foul, but has a good idea. Get the man in scorign position

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 9:13 pm
  • Now he bunts Tek over to 2nd, 1 gone. JDre batting for WPen.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • Coco lays down a bunt but ‘Tek is thrown out at first. At least we have a speed-demon on base now. Drew pinch-hitting for Wiffy-Mo. Thank goodness.
Come on guys, let’s get Lester the win. He’s done for the night, we need to do it here.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • Coco bunts liek sh*t and Tek is out at second.
Drew in for Pena. Thank God.
    11-0 Orioles in New York

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • Is tek out? Gamecast says CoCo bunted and Tek is out.

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • Drew GIDPs. Inning over. Going to scream.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • Double play. Thanks for the relief pitcher BS before.

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • *cries*

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 9:16 pm
  • MDC pitching. Assuming a hold (!), the Sox have six outs to get at least one run. It really shouldn’t be this hard.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:16 pm
  • Gagne time? If he comes in Some needs to take a dump in a bag, drop it off a Tito’s house, light it, and ring the doorbell.

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:17 pm
  • Have any statheads worked up numbers on whether the sac bunt with a runner on 1st and no outs is really worth trying? How often does it lead either to an out, or fails to produce the expected easy score from 2nd?
(Note: Unclear why Gameday initially said Coco’s sac was successful.)

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:18 pm
  • So how many runs is Tampa going to score this inning?

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • Gomes with a leadoff single. Wonderful.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • followed up with a walk

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:23 pm
  • Walk to Wilson, who is batting .247. Josh Paul bats .179 so we had better get him out here. Come on Delcarmen.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • They sacrifice both men over, 2 RISP with 1 out. We need a strikeout.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • A walk makes it 1st and 2nd, no outs… Sac bunt moves the runners over.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • Phew, Manny grabs it in shallow left, 2 gone with the two RISP still. IBB to Crawford loads ’em up for Upton (who actually has a higher BA that Carl).

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • Whew, fly ball leaves the runners where they are. Tito finally learns how to IBB, putting Crawford on 1st.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • Well here it is, Crawford INT walk, basesloaded 2 out, upton up

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • Crawford is batting .491 in August. Scary stuff.
    Come on Timlin.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:29 pm
  • Timlin in. I don’t feel better.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:30 pm

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:30 pm

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:33 pm
  • F’ing yEA TIMLIN! Millar just went deep 12-0 O’s

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:33 pm
  • YEAH TIMLIN!
That out was HUGE. Come on offense, show your goddamn face.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:33 pm

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • //Machine Gunnery Sergeant Timlin pulls it off!//
Ahahahaha, perfect description. I can see Timlin laying down some covering fire while 2,000 Vietcong storm the base.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • C’mon, Sox, this Dan Wheeler guy was *born* to cough up one-run leads.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • I have to kill Lugo now, brb.

no sleep til brooklyn SF August 14, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • Oh SHIT. Oh god no. PLEASE no.
    Gagne is warming up.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • 2 down, this game is over. Sox don’t score late. They haven’t in over a month.

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • Two gone. Jeebus.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • Papi grounds out. Gagne heading towards the mound, with a “I hope I don’t fuck it up” look on his face.
Aren’t closers supposed to be, you know, CONFIDENT? Not peeing their pants?

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • Papi out. Oh joy. Ain’t lookin’ good. Is Gagne really coming in?

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:45 pm
  • The Yanks are going to get killed, and its going to be for nothing as we’re going to lose to D-rays. SO pathetic. So incredible pathetic. As a wise man once said “We got no runs on one hit? One hit? All we got was one god damn hit?”

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:47 pm
  • Gag-me starts off with three straight balls, works the count back full, then gets the K.
This is nerve-wracking to say the least.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:48 pm
  • Gagnes in, well atleast he cant blow the lead

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • Gag-me gets a second K. If he gets a third I might start spelling his name correctly.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:51 pm
  • “Gagnes in, well atleast he cant blow the lead”
Your gallows humor made me laugh long enough to stop putting this noose together. How ironic.
Seriously, if we destined to lose tonight, I’m sort of jealous of that 12-0 drubbing going on in New York. 1-0 is just ghoulish.

    FenSheaParkway August 14, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • Uhhh, a two-out double by Harris.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • of course Gagne doesn’t let in run. That SOB

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:54 pm
  • Gag-e gets the count to 1-2… And there’s strike #3. Thank you, Eric Gagne, 10 more appearances like this one and all will be forgiven.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:54 pm
  • Holy crap, Gagne struck out the side!
I’m willing to forget the Oriole series if he continues to dominate from here on out.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:55 pm
  • If the Sox can’t beat the Devil Rays when their pitches hold TB to 1 run over 9… What happens when we play New York?

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:56 pm
  • 8 K’s by Red Sox starters over 9 innings. That equals what Kazmir did in 6.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 9:56 pm
  • Agreed. But that bad first impression is going to make it tough for Sox fans to ever truly trust seeing him out there.
    Stupid primacy effect.

    FenSheaParkway August 14, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • Odds the Sox score two here, I’d say 35-1, since I think that is the number of days ago they scored a run in the 9th.

    Kris SF August 14, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • C’mon, Manny, one swing.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • Manny the K.

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • Manny strikes out looking at a pitch that he shouldn’t have taken. Might have been low, but it was too close to let go.
    Come on Lowell.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 10:00 pm

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 10:15 pm
  • I can’t take credit for the Lowell Connector. I saw that first on Boston Dirtdogs.
However, I call him the Lowell Collector after a great defensive play, and I’m willing to take all the credit on that one. haha…

    FenSheaParkway August 14, 2007, 10:16 pm

That’s for you Jon, now make this the start of something great for the rest of the season and a long life with the Red Sox.

  • Yeah. Lester was Great. Hopefulyl he can build on that.

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 10:20 pm
  • This is the turning point. This is the point we will look back on and say “That day was when the Yankees assault was halted. That day the siege was lifted, and the glory was spread.
The Yankees are losing 12-0 and have only gotten 2 hits. The Red Sox have an amazing 9th-inning comeback, with Gagne picking up the W and striking out the side in the 9th.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 10:20 pm

  • Oh, and God Bless Coco.

    Atheose August 14, 2007, 10:25 pm
  • Yankees were bush-league too. They intentionally plunked Markakis after it was 11-0. Poor sportsman ship.. no need to hit a guy jsut cause your pitchers werent doign well

    Dionysus August 14, 2007, 10:25 pm
  • “That day the siege was lifted, and the glory was spread.”
It’d be cool if seasons worked like that. The offseason Baseball books would practically write themselves!
I do hope you’re right about the sentiment though. Tonight was certainly harmonious like that.

    FenSheaParkway August 14, 2007, 10:29 pm
  • I share your optimism, Atheose, with the caveat that I felt exactly that way last week when Wily Mo (Wily Mo!) brought us back late against the Orioles… then Gagne & Co. gave it right back. Unfortunately it is very rare for one game to turn a season around (the Tek facemask/Sox walk-off against Mo in 2004 was one such game).

    Hudson August 14, 2007, 10:32 pm
  • That game will go down in infamy, Hudson. Theres not a person in the Nation who doesnt agree that was the Turning Point.
If our offense can hold itself together, I really think we have the pieces similar to last year.
Lights-Out Bullpen (except for Gagne/Tavarez) Oki, Delcarmen, Timlin, and Paps are all players any team would kill for.
Excellent defense (I keep thinkign Lugo has been worse than he is apprentlyh.. Sox are 3 or 4th in the AL defensively)
Come post season we’ll even have that crucial speed off the bench (Ellsbury!).. and we all know how crucial THAT is. There’d have been no 2004 if it hadn’t been for Dave Roberts making The Steal in Game 4 agaisnt Mo

  • I’m incredibly pleased with the win tonight. I saw the Yankees being bludgeoned and thought, ‘If we can’t pull this off, I don’t see this team going very far.’
    And they won!

  • Caught this one in pieces too…but the right piece mainly. Saw the first inning, saw 1-0 late in the game for one batter (the 5th?), saw from when Gagne had 1 out (I was just begging him not to give up the run after the double, to let us have a chance–so happy he had a hand in this victory) to the beautiful, beautiful ending. Thank you, Sox. Thank you for letting me tune in for the 9th to get a great big dose of “Jump around your living room” happy.

  • Also, this was a great win, but I’m not ready to give this team the pennant or anything. It took an improbable inning to grab victory after not scoring for 8…against the Devil Rays (which, Kazmir, sure, but c’mon). And it was one game with many left to play. But I do think Gagne can help. A lot.

  • Jon Lester returned to Boston is grand fashion tonight with a performance that should draw millions of Sox fans off the ledges of bridges from Maine to San Diego.

  • good to see a little of the sf swagger back in you guys…all it takes is a win like this to sweep away the despair for a bit…
