And This Year’s Van Gundy Award Goes To…

…Terry “Hold ’em Back” Francona.

FYI Umpires: The correct answer, when questioned, is always, “You’re absolutely right Mr. Ortiz. My mistake.” And then watch out for flying bats.

PS: Will that suspension be for 1, 3, 5, or 10 games? Vote early, vote often!

  • Just saw the event on Sportscenter. My guess is a 3 game suspension – no contact with the umps, and the bats really didn’t land all that close (though on the roll Ortiz clubbed the shot nearly perfectly!). But hold on with those Van Gundy comparisons. Francona did a pretty good job of holding back the big guy and probably prevented a really unfortunate and nasty physical uncursion by Ortiz. Van Gundy got dragged around like a rag doll.
Umpires’ fuses are an interesting topic. Ortiz, who surely argued the balls and strikes, was rightfully tossed. Last week in a Yankees game Jorge Posada went at the ump in a similar fashion, but wasn’t tossed. It would be great to be a fly on the chest protector, to know what was said in each case.
