It is not surprising that the two teams scored 16 runs combined in the season opener. These teams averaged over 11 runs combined spanning the 18 games last season. A.J. Burnett had one decent outing against the Red Sox in the Bronx August 7th of last season. In his other three starts, he was clobbered and ineffective, especially at Fenway. He takes the mound tonight while Jon Lester gets the rock for the Sox. Lester fared slightly better against the Yankees, winning one game out of his four starts while allowing 11 runs over his 22 innings and averaging almost 11k/9ip. Lineups follow, comment away.

Is it wrong to have little to no confidence in AJ??? I fully expect to lose again…
Going to watch the Sabres game I think and tape this one until the wife gets home…have fun guys!
Jon Lester, a LHP who sits mid-90s with his four-seamer and has 4 pitches.
Just a great pitcher.
Wow MLB.tv is really buggy so far. Took me about 20 tries to get the video to load, and about halfway through that inning the audio switched from the NESN guys to YES. Damn.
Swishalicious!
Biiiiig spot for Granderson. Just hit a fly ball to CF, Curtis, that’s all we ask of you.
Well, that was poor.
Angel Hernandez isn’t letting anyone call time out… clearly he wants to get home in time to watch LOST.
Frankly, I’m more excited these days for FX’s new series Justified. I shall not be listening to the game through the hours of 9 and 10 tonight.
Yeah, I’ll be busy watching LOST from 9-10 too Andrew. 6 episodes left!
VMart makes it 3-1!
Victah!
C’mon Jon, hold it down buddy!
Let’s not squander this bases-loaded opportunity, okay?
Oops, blown call at first.
Beat me to it, Andrew. Ugh we needed that DP.
Don’t worry Ath, Burnett’s going to give up more runs tonight.
Tie game. Pull him, Tito.
Let’s see how Cano does with RISP. He’s going to be seeing a lot of these situations this year.
How dare you try to reverse-jinx Burnett! I will have none of it, and will re-jinx him by saying that he will not give up ANY runs from here on out!
Wow Lester is lucky to get out of that inning at all. Every hit was well-struck.
I dunno Ath, pull him for who? I could see bringing in Bard or Oki, but is Tito that kind of manager to put his relievers in before the late innings?
But that should definitely be his last inning. Lots of hard-hit balls.
Yankee pitchers just can’t hold leads. Disheartening.
Typical Yanks-Sox game. back and forth, every AB taking half an hour, no lead is safe…
Rough break for Curtis. Nailed that pitch.
Jeter with 2 out and RISP. Count it.
Or not
Damn, the Yankees are wasting a LOT of opportunities tonight.
Aceves in. 10-game winner out of the pen last year. Too funny. And there’s one down.
Wow, Jeter making some awesome plays.
Talk about jinxing the captain Andrew…ouch. I did it on his AB last inning.
We really don’t need to give the Sox extra chances…
uzr be damned.
There we go. Come on bats
I’ve had some time today to get the score and standings module working. Seems to be tight for the scores, but let me know if you see any foul-ups. Standings will pop up soon. Thanks :)
You are a mad genius ag.
Horseshit strike 3 call there…awful.
Well I guess it kind of makes up for that blown call at first kreug.
Good thing I’ve got Rolaids, this is another hell of a game.
Bard’s breaking stuff plus his triple-digit-heat make for a pretty serious combination out of the pen.
Oh great – another bullpen battle.
Thanks, IH, though I’m nowhere near genius. I hope these new scripts work well enough.
If anyone has issues, go to the author page to find my email address and tell me your browser/OS combo along with the date and time where something broke.
My thanks to you guys.
As for as the “mad”, that psychiatrist’s report will never stand in court if I can afford an attorney.
Another brutal call by the homeplate “ump”…
This game is so stressful!
There must be a brawl in the stands??? Did you see everyone looking away from the field during that ridiculously called strike in the dirt???
Hell of an AB by Squishy…
Crap.
So many wasted chances…
double crap.
Alright, time for a little pop fly homerun over the Monster.
How many dudes have we left on base so far??? Come on…
E6
COME ON CHUNK!!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!
BABY….rrrrooooooooooffffffffffffffff????
3rd time with the bases loaded…come on…pllllleeeeeeeaaaaaaassssssseeeeeeee?????
Hmm, I thought they would bring in Papelbon. Johnson is actually better vs. LHP for his career.
GREAT EYE NICKY!!!!!!
Tex up with no hits this season yet…bases loaded…2 outs…the drama builds…
This is tough to watch
Nick is a walk-machine. He and Swisher see a hell of a lot of pitches. Let’s go Teixeira!
OBP Jesus strikes again!
Great. I’m sure a one-run lead will last.
About 30 seconds.
Figured he wouldn’t get a hit…he doesn’t hit until May at the earliest…that could come back to bite us.
A lot of wasted chances could come back to bite us. The Yankees were on-base a LOT today.
Let’s see what Robertson has …
Yep, that really sucked Andrew…really sucked hard…
COME ON DAVID ROBERTSON!!! Be the ball…
At least it was only a single?
Marte coming in???? Fuck. Game.
Oh, this is just silly.
I can’t watch…
These games are way too long.
Squeeze the ball Jorge…you can do it.
Un-fucking-real.
Nice job fellas.
Marte is a fucking disaster.
About to just watch “Justified” on DVR…awesome show by the way. Better than watching the Yankees pre-June 1.
GENEROUS strike call there for DUH-maso…
Once again it is apparent that the only thing the Yankees hate more than losing is winning in April.
Whew.
(Funny how awesome Marte was in the playoffs, but completely awful the rest of the time?)
Joba in now. I have no confidence in him anymore sadly…
Joba in. Please be fist-pump-joba.
Agreed kreug, I’m going to watch that later tonight!
Okay, so good job Marte, I guess. Now does Joba get to blow the lead with his 92-mph fastball?
Awesome.
Why bring in Robertson at all? Now you have one less very good pitcher in the likely event of a tie game.
Joe is a very good long-term bullpen manager, but this kind of stuff is just straight-out silly.
You can become a Sabres fan and watch the playoffs with me IH!!! We won’t make it into May probably so it will work out perfect…
Please be fist-pump-joba
Not sure that kid exists anymore?
Beltre has been crushing the ball tonight.
Beltre looks weird in a Boston uniform to me…
Sweet.
Huge K. Wow. 2 outs.
Oh my god, what a terrible swing from Beltre. That was nowhere near the plate.
Close…whew.
If Joba can do this Mo faces the bottom of the order in the 9th. Please…
Slider looking great.
FIST PUMP BABY!!!! BEAUTIFUL JOBA!!! That was f-cking awesome…
Wow, Joba grunted and farted his way through that inning.
360 degree fist-pump. Love it! Sox fans everywhere are very impressed right now :o)
“Joba grunted and farted his way through that inning”
Best description ever
That was good for our collective soul’s boys…looked like the Joba of old there…
I worship at the altar of Mo, but i would really like osme insurance here. April in Fenway is not his best venue and if you saw his last spring taining appearance it was literally the worst I’ve ever seen of him (including in other spring training games!). Let’s give him another couple runs please!
Insurance run or two or ten please???
That’s scary for you IH…same brainwaves!!!
WTP.
Ca-YES!!!!!
CANO GOES DEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPP!!!! That was awesome. Crushed it. Insurance run #1.
robi!!!!!!!
[just got home]
Robbie!!!! Yes! Good thing no one was on base or he would have grounded to short instead…
IH is here all week folks!!!
I’d like to get a loop-tape featuring a Derek Jeter single hand clap, a Joba 360 fist pump, Derek Jeter holding his hand up to the home plate ump before each pitch, and a close up of A-Rod’s lips and play it for my SF friends at every opportunity.
Ridiculous call…this prick sucks.
ENTER SANDMAN!!!!
Thanks krueg…the first late-inning-lead of the year has me feeling giddy. Please don’t blow this…
I hear you brother…
Here we go Mo…BRING IT!!!!
1 out.
Quick out.
That was a K…bull-pucky.
Well he really K’d, but the ump decided to let him get on base…double.
Scutaro is a Rivera-killer!
Good thing there’s that insurance run.
Queesy feelings.
Back to the top of the order with 1 out…
relax IH…Mo’s got this dude.
2 outs.
Worse case scenario IH, they beat us 8 straight and we win the WS again…it’s all gravy baby!
I do believe the non-strike call before was less outside than that pitch.
Can we have robots?
Sit down mighty-might # 1. Now to mighty-might # 2.
Theeeeeeee Yankees win!
I’ll take 1 out of 3 in Boston in April.
But 2 out of 3 would be sweet.
YANKEES WIN…THAAAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN!!!!
That’s better. Rubber game tomorrow. Great job boys! Besides going 1 for 60 with RISP and the 87 LOB…
That’s the ballgame! See you guys. An all-YF gamethread since they took the lead is not exactly spicy, but it certainly was fun. Have a good night.
You too IH! See you guys, talk to you later in the game tomorrow…krueg’s been hitting the gym so I have to tape the beginning of Lackey in the Sox uniform. That should be INTERESTING!!!
Joba’s performance was encouraging since my friend and I had decided only yesterday that “Eastbound and Out” might be a prescient description of his career. That’s good.
Didn’t get to watch Burnett, but the numbers don’t look so hot. And the Yanks’ offense has to be given credit for knocking to great starters around on back to back days.
Going to be a great season.
Go Yanks.
