As Good as your Next Starter: A’s-Sox Gamer III

Bad pitching and hitting fully aligned for the Red Sox last night: Aceves was Keystone Cops bad and the offense was shut out on 3 hits in 7 innings of a rain-shortened game (two of the hits came with 2 outs in the 7th). Well, the bullpen got rest (only Aceves and Wright pitched last night), and Papi cooled his heels (possibly literally) at the right time.

Today, momentum would appear to be in the Red Sox’ favor, as Lester faces good-but-perpetually-injured Brett Anderson (sort of Bedard-lite), who sprained his ankle in the 1st inning last start against the Rays on the 19th, and left the game after giving up 4 runs. Who knows what will transpire at 4:05 ET today, though? Comment away!

  • O’s lose, and so the Sox will end the day in first. (2nd could be as close as 0.5 GB if Yanks win and Sox lose.)

  • Lester at 44 pitches after 2 IP. The old bugaboo. Walks (3 so far), inability to put ’em away.

  • And then Crisp has a 10-pitch AB to start the 3rd. 2 1/3 IP and 54 pitches, ouch.

  • 3 IP, 65 pitches. Still no runs, though.

  • Anderson at 51 after 3. Still time for this to go in the Sox’ favor.

  • 3-3 after Drew triples in a couple with 2 outs.

  • Sox back-to-back 3-run innings prove just enough. Bailey K’s the side (no baserunners) in the 9th.

Game: win. Series: win. Sox have won 5 series (NYY, TOR, OAK, swept two: TB, CLE) and lost 2 (BAL, KC, not swept yet). 14-7.
