Back on the Horse…Sox-Angels Gamer IX

A little late, and the Halos already have a 1-0 lead. Fantastic.

The Good Weaver comes to town, as the Sox try to bounce back after yet another brutal Gagne outing. Jered’s been solid this season, and comes into Fenway after two excellent home-starts against Boston and Minnesota.

Meanwhile, Schilling remains winless in two starts since his return from the disabled list. He threw six strong innings at Baltimore last week, but was denied a win after–say it with me–Gagne blew the save. Well, at least Tito can’t use Gagne two days in a row…

Lineups after the jump. Lowell and Pedroia getting a routine day off.

2. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
3. David Ortiz, DH

  • Ugh. I don’t like this game at all.

  • Wow. Schilling has awful luck. Jams Kotchman, who hits a slow roller down the line for a double. Gets two outs without letting the run score. Willits drops the bat at a good splitter and it gets bounced up the middle for an RBI single. None of that was really his fault.
    2-0 Angels

  • I hate Reggie. He’s the new Chone. PEST!

  • And then a pesky-pole homerun, also known as a fly-out just about anywhere else. That was Schilling’s fault.
I’m done now. Gonna go see Superbad.

    Josh SF (D1) August 18, 2007, 7:42 pm
  • That’s funny — I was sitting here watching Schilling pitch and thinking that I was already seeing something superbad.

This inning going a little better, at least.
PS Apologies for the idiotic pun.

  • Ah, getting no one home with runners on 2nd and 3rd, one out — that’s the Red Sox I remember.
And does ANYONE have a theory for why Youk is batting, like, .200 since the All-Star break?

  • Maybe being beaned all those times finally caught up to his body.

  • I’m thisclose to sending Gagne to the glue factory for losing those games because losing today is going to hurt.

  • 2nd & 3rd — no outs. How will our boys conspire to drive in no runs this time?

  • Ah, bases loaded. I predict a K and then a DP.

  • OK, negativity now retracted entirely. Now, to extend the lead and make it bullpen-proof…

  • Well, DAMN, Newly Clutch Papi refuses to let the team roll over and die — again.
If the Sox give back this gift two days in a row, I wouldn’t blame him if he asked for a trade. [KIDDING]

  • 3 Ks for Manny – does Lil Weaver traditionally have his number like this?

    stuck working August 18, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • Wow. Hadn’t actually left yet; went in the shower down 5-0 and came back to 6-5. Cool.
Fair to say Weaver owns Manny Ramirez? Looks like it…
And now I’m really out after Drew cashes his 1000th career hit. Good stuff, so far. Schill seems to have calmed down since the second…Vlad’s ridiculous homer aside. Wasn’t a bad pitch…Vlad’s just Vlad, and he’s always owned Curt.

    Josh SF (D1) August 18, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • Manny is now 0-6 with 4 K vs Weaver

Think we can trade Gagne for him?

    Josh August 18, 2007, 9:32 pm
  • Arizona pitcher Micah Owings is 4-4 with 2 HR and 6 RBI. He’s also only allowed 2 runs and 2 hits through 6 2/3 innings

  • Oki makes me so happy and so nervous.

no sleep til brooklyn SF August 18, 2007, 9:47 pm
  • They just mentioned on ‘RKO that Oki’s season high is 62 innings. He’s at 59 right now. Now would be a good time for Gagne to find his ‘nads.

  • Lugo successsfuly in sacrificing Cora over to 2nd; Sox trying to manufacture the run they couldn’t get home last night?
NESN says that Kielty will start tomorrow…

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • (Kietly starting as an OF, of course. Though I’d almost rather he pitched than Julian T.)

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 9:59 pm
  • Make ’em pay, Manny, for that indignity of pitching around Papi to get to you…

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • Kielty in tomorrow, that’ll be interesting. C’mon Manny, bring the pop.

  • huge double from manny. that’s a message.

    Josh August 18, 2007, 10:02 pm
  • Maybe you just need to IBB Ortiz to get Manny to focus.

    rootbeerfloat August 18, 2007, 10:02 pm
  • MANNY!
After 4 Ks tonight, ManRam comes up with a double and scores not just Cora but Papi all the way from 1st…

  • Drew walks, 1st and 2nd with two outs. Pitching change.

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 10:09 pm
  • OK, assuming Gagne isn’t coming in for the 9th, we’re in relatively good shape.

    rootbeerfloat August 18, 2007, 10:09 pm
  • yea they pushed wake back until Monday in TB because of his sucess there

    TJ August 18, 2007, 10:09 pm
  • So who’s gonna close this? Synder? MDC?

no sleep til brooklyn SF August 18, 2007, 10:11 pm
  • Hmm…so the academic question is, at what point would you bring in Gagne? Would you run him out there with a 5 run lead? A six run lead?

    DW-sf August 18, 2007, 10:11 pm
  • Rootbeer, I had read on this site yesterday that Wakes had been moved to Monday to throw him against his doormats, the D-Rays… And that The Orc would start in his place Sunday. But maybe that has changed?
Now 10-5 on a wild pitch. And a walk.
Geez, this lead is getting so big I would not be surprised if Francona gave that bearded Canadian goat a shot at figuring out his mechanics in front of a ninth-inning crowd.

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 10:11 pm
  • Inning over. Who comes in?

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 10:12 pm
  • I might eat this words, but I guess that if the Sox want to give Gagne a chance to get right, this is as good a chance as any. I feel tense just typing that idea.

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 10:14 pm
  • I found a note about the pitching move as well. Don’t we kinda have a 5 man rotation? Beckett, Schilling, Lester, Wake, and Dice-K? I’m baffled about how good Wake would have to be in TB (or how bad he’d have to be with LA) to mess with that line-up.

    rootbeerfloat August 18, 2007, 10:14 pm
  • It’s Paps. Tito not taking any chances.

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 10:15 pm
  • That was my reaction too, rootb. Don’t mess with the rotation, and don’t chance “giving” a game on Sunday to theoretically win one Monday. The Sox should be able to beat TB with *any* of our pitchers, in theory.

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 10:17 pm
  • another plus to holding wake back a day it puts MAtsuzaka, Beckett and Schilling inline for the Yankee series

    TJ August 18, 2007, 10:20 pm
  • After tonight, I’m not sure I’m all that excited about Schilling but I only had Gameday so I couldn’t tell if he was getting unlucky or just stinking.

  • Damn Wilits built JPap’s pitch count to 18 for the inning, but he struck out the side.
Game over, 5 game lead preserved.
Red Sox magic number is 35 with 39 games left to play.

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 10:24 pm
  • TJ, that makes a little more sense, if it would have that result. I suppose the case also could be made that with the Sox almost guaranteed [CUE SOUND OF WOOD KNOCKING], Boston may want to stretch things out a little and give people rest with some spot starts from, ugh, Tavarez. But unless we sweep the Yankees this weekend, I wouldn’t want to go there.

    Hudson August 18, 2007, 10:27 pm
  • (Almost guaranteed to make the playoffs, that should have said. Not that I’d be happy about anything less than 1st.)
