Okay, it’s a bit early to be banging on the panic button, but we can’t help but note how much this Bomber squad is starting to look like the teams of the 1980s that caused us such agony. Lets’ compare:
Aging lefty ace who seems past his prime:
Then: Gator
Now: Unit
Overpriced, underwhelming pitching imports:
Then: Witson, Plunk, Cadaret
Now: Wright, Pavano
Dominant top of the order:
Then: Ricky, Willie, Donnie, Winnie
Now: Derek, Alex, Gary, Hideki
Genuine Yankee God:
Then: Donnie
Now: Derek
Bullpen closer prone to giving up leads:
Then: Rags
Now: SturGorMo
What else? Mediocre defense, a lame bench….Okay, we’re pushing it. Rivera is no rags, Unit is likely to snap back to life, and the pitching (we hope) will improve. Still, this team has the Mark of Steinbrenner. Paging Howie Spira!
Two things:
1) Wouldn’t our current lineup kick-ASS if this were, say 2000/2001?
2) Remember our bench in 1998? Tim Raines, Jorge Posada, Chili Davis. Now we get Dirty Sanchez and John Flaherty.
Now: Derek, Alex, Gary, Hideki
Reminds me of Sesame Street – “one of these kids is not like the other…”
Currently that would be 0-for-Alex.
Don’t worry. Kevin “Stopper” Brown has come to save the day. The season begins today!
Looks like the same old story after 1 inning: A-Rod can’t hit w/men on; Brown’s headed for a showdown with the clubhouse wall.
Ah, yes, it’s the A-Rod we’ve all come to know: strand ’em on base when it matters, pop the homer when the game’s basically over. We are not impressed, Alex.
Are you f’ing kidding me? Woemack is hidding w/ bases loaded and 2 outs in the 8th, down by 4, with Giambi on the bench????
WTF JOE!!!!!
excuses me. 2 on. whatever.
Predictable result!
Woemack makes Pat Kelly look like Rogers Hornsby.
Why is Woe-mack leading off? An ounce of baseball research shows this is a dumb move, but Torre has always been obsessed with speed at the top. And then to not pinch hit for him when you have Jason Giambi on the bench? My God.
Vintage 80s team, vintage 80s Steinbrenner!
”Enough is enough. I am bitterly disappointed as I’m sure all Yankee fans are by the lack of performance by our team. Ut is unbelievable to me that the highest-paid team in baseball would start the season in such a deep funk. They are not playing like true Yankees. They have the talent to win and they are not winning. I expect Joe Torre, his complete coaching staff and the team to turn this around.”
