Bad Karma: Sox-Satanfish Gamer

Inspired by an email from Paul, I was in the process of composing a snarky post about the curse of the attackgerbil on Sox game threads.  Right in mid-snark, my laptop seized and no longer will boot.  Curses!  Though on vacation, I scooted down to my office to compose a gamer for y’all Sox fans as you play the Fish, and ponder the cosmic justice inflicted upon my unhappy PowerBook.

While I sweat the stuff I might not recover due to my diffident disregard of attackgerbil’s number one law of computer use (have a backup plan and stick to it), enjoy Tim Wakefield pitching against the SatanFish, who can not figure the man out.  Scott Kazmir is no slouch against anyone, let alone the Sox, who are 3-5 lifetime against the lefty from Houston.

  • I turned the game on, and watch the pre-game stuff and everything… and the suddenly Pedroia is on first. It’s like I teleported forward in time!

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:12 pm
  • Tek with a second game off in a row. No Tizzle. Kielty. I guess the regular lineup doesn’t work against Kazmir, so might as well go with these guys. Tiz stinks lifetime against the Met castoff, and Kielty has nice numbers against SK, so let’s see if the “lesser talent but better matchup” lineup works for Tito and the Sox.

  • I turned the game on, and two men are on!

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:13 pm
  • Youk grabs a walk… table is set for Ortiz and Manny.
Correction, Kielty and Manny. Ugh, games without Ortiz make me nervous.

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • Kielty looks like a 1950s-era wrestler. All he’s missing is the singlet.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • Ortiz is like 5-34 lifetime against Kaz, A.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • Kielty taps on a check swing right back to Kazmir, who gets the force at second. 1/3, one down. Would be nice to grab a quick run here. No channeling of Jim Ed, Manny.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:15 pm
  • Kielty hits a wierd little check-swing and Youk is thrown out at 2nd. Pedroia to 3rd, 1 out.
    PLEASE no double play Manny.

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:15 pm
  • Manny stares at three straight pitches, including two straight fastballs, looks clueless. 1-2 count.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • Make that four straight pitches, and the K looking. Horrible at-bat from the cleanup man.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • At least he didn’t GIDP.

    rootbeerfloat August 20, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • Lowell tags one down the line, scoring both Pedroia and Kielty! 2-0 Sox. Manny says “thank you Mikey!”.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • Manny strikes out looking at a pitch too close to take. 2 down.
I have a feeling the 2 baserunners we started the inning with will be the only two of the game.

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • Thank goodness I’m wrong, 2-0 Sox. And wow SF, you’re WAY ahead of me. Hehe.
I LOVE Lowell in the 5 spot.

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • I meant to mention in the header that I read on RotoWorld that Doug Mirabelli was placed on the 15-day DL, and that Kevin Cash will take over as Tim Wakefield’s personal catcher for at least the next couple of weeks.

    attackgerbil August 20, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • Ump showing no love to Drew, calling a strike on a check swing which was barely even a check swing. Really not a good call. Drew flings his bat away disgusted after the next pitch, a swinging strike for the K.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:21 pm
  • Right, Gerb – Cash caught Charlie Zink in the minors, so he’s got experience with the knuckleball, or at least a minor-league version of the knuckleball.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:22 pm
  • Now we will see how good Cash’s Mirabelli impersonation is.

    Kevin SF August 20, 2007, 7:23 pm
  • Wake starts off the game with a knuckleball to the backstop. Iwamura gets out of the way of a pitch going maybe 42 miles an hour.
Cash drops pitch #3, it glances off his glove towards the dugout. So far, an interesting start for Wake and the catcher. He also drops pitch #5, a borderline pitch made into a ball by Cash’s failure to corral it. Iwamura walks on #6. Not a good start for Cash, at all.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:24 pm
  • Akinora draws a walk, and Cash drops three balls. Sigh.

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:24 pm
  • Iwamura steals second. I’d say that the saying should be revised to “death, taxes, and anyone trying to steal second off of Tim Wakefield”.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • Cash drops strike 3 to Carl, but makes a great play to run over and throw him out at first.

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • And Crawford strikes out, the ball gets away from Cash, Iwamura advances to third, Crawford out at home. That’s four dropped pitches in 1/3 of an inning so far. Cash looks totally befuddled – he just body-cradled a perfect strike.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • Crawford out at FIRST, not home.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • Drew gets a little respect, and Akinora doesn’t try tagging. Whew.

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • Very high probability of a run scoring here without a hit…

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • Wake’s ball is moving like mad. Cash looks lost, but the knuckler has some crazy-ass movement on it right now.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:28 pm
  • D’oh, thanks for the correction SF. Watching Cash struggle behind the plate has me confused.

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • Nice play by Pedroia deep in the hole on the shift, Wake escapes.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • Was this a scheduled night off for Papi?

    Rob August 20, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • My error, A. I was typing too fast, somehow had Crawford lapping Iwamura at third on a passed ball third strike. Made no sense, sorry.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • Papi is off because he, to put it lightly, sucks against Kazmir.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • Thanks SF, was wondering what the underlying issue was.

    Rob August 20, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • Crisp with a leadoff double…sweet.

    Rob August 20, 2007, 7:33 pm
  • Coco gets a ground-rule double on a VERY close play. God bless Coco!
The camera angle at Tropicana Field is awesome, especially to see the knuckle ball. It’s like a fricken corkscrew.
If I were the Devil Rays manager, I would want a 5-man rotation of Knuckleballers. 162-0 season record? No problem!

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:34 pm
  • Lugo advances Crisp to 3rd.

    Rob August 20, 2007, 7:36 pm
  • Lugo moves him over, time for Cash to… err… bleh. Maybe Pedroia can do something after Cash K’s on 3 pitches!

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:36 pm
  • Cash walks?

    Rob August 20, 2007, 7:39 pm
  • Holy potatoes, Cash walks.

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 7:39 pm
  • How much do you think it would take to get Wakefield to pitch for the Rays after his contract is up? He could be a 30-game winner……

    Kevin SF August 20, 2007, 7:41 pm
  • Wow, Kaz having trouble for once. Odd.
Ya, I’m bored until the west coast games..

    Lar August 20, 2007, 7:41 pm

    Lar August 20, 2007, 7:47 pm
  • MANNY!

    Dionysus August 20, 2007, 7:47 pm
  • Of course, I’m just a bit slow. I actually have Manny on my team and a rival started Kaz, sooo.. ya. Though I still wish the Sox lose 10-9 with Manny driving in most of that.. ;)

    Lar August 20, 2007, 7:47 pm
  • Manny is definately a lot more productive in the second half of the season than the 1st.

    Rob August 20, 2007, 7:48 pm
  • Oh how I hope Drew destroys the first pitch.

    Kevin SF August 20, 2007, 7:48 pm
  • Meanwhile Kazmir’s pitch cound is starting to rise.

    Rob August 20, 2007, 7:49 pm
  • When you’re up by 5, does pitch counts matter anymore? =P

    Lar August 20, 2007, 7:49 pm
  • Pedroia owns Kazmir now 7-11 career against him

    TJ August 20, 2007, 7:50 pm
  • Drew grounds out after two straight balls.
Drew, perhaps you should have made him throw a strike or two.

    Rob August 20, 2007, 7:50 pm
  • Drew makes an out (I think.. audio clipped out, but when it came bakc it was commercial). Still.. 5-0 Sox.

    Dionysus August 20, 2007, 7:51 pm
  • Would have been nice to get a few more runs and give ourself a Gagne-proof lead.
(Or a passed ball-proof lead, for that matter.)
    Still, no real complaints.

    stuck working August 20, 2007, 7:51 pm
  • I do not understand what the Rays are saving their young arms for, its not like they are ever going to spend the money to get some D or some offense. When is this run by the Rays going to happen?

    Kevin SF August 20, 2007, 7:51 pm
  • >>When you’re up by 5, does pitch counts matter anymore? =P
I know that Wake is pitching and this is TB we are facing. BUT…should Wake happen to have one of those innings, I would like Kazmir to be gone from the game and us into about a third round of the soft tender underbelly that is known as the TB bullpen.
    just saying…..

    Rob August 20, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • I know being up by 5 should be somewhat comforting, but when the hell is Drew gonna show us he has a (70 million dollar) pulse? Is he even capable of hitting the ball in any even semi-clutch situation?? I know the guy has game, but he seems to have lost in en route to Boston.

    ToddSF August 20, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • some people just cant be happy… 5 runs in two innings and theres still complaints about the offense….wow

    Anonymous August 20, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • Well if you haven’t noticed we have a Rook catching Wake and Gagne is available tonight. No lead is safe.

    Kevin SF August 20, 2007, 7:54 pm
  • Cash isn’t a rook, he’s a retread.

    SF August 20, 2007, 7:56 pm

    TJ August 20, 2007, 7:57 pm
  • Nice quick inning by Wake.

    Rob August 20, 2007, 7:57 pm
  • Cash cant be any worse the Belli offensively and he does have experience catching a knuckler so this is like any other TB game with wake…. and he’s 18-2 againt the rays

    TJ August 20, 2007, 7:58 pm
  • My bad SF I should have said a rookie in the Wakefield catching department.

    Kevin SF August 20, 2007, 7:58 pm
  • Crisp K’s…but it was a great job making Kazmir throw 10 pitches.

    Rob August 20, 2007, 8:00 pm

  • Kazmir in the groove now, K’ing Crisp and Cash. Good thing we tagged him early.

    Atheose August 20, 2007, 8:04 pm

  • I can’t watch the game at work (thus the name), so could someone please chip in with a bit on how Cash is doing behind the plate? After a rough first, it sounds like there haven’t been any other adventures, correct?
PS All of this puts me in mind of the fact that Cla Meredith and Josh Bard haven’t been anywhere near as impressive this year. Sort of a relief and a disappointment, that.
