Beckett in Baltimore: Sox-O’s Gamer I

SF’s managing a youngling on the DL, so this is YF getting your Boston game thread started. Sox in Charm City, home to YF’s alma mater (but back then, the home team played in Memorial Stadium. Getting old.) Go O’s!

  • Senor Tejada smacks a leadoff homer with 2 out in the bottom of the first. 1-0 O’s.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 7:33 pm
  • Since, of course, there were 2 out, it can hardly be a leadoff homer. I hate still being at work.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 7:33 pm
  • Wily Mo with some serious opposite field power. 2-1 Sox on the dingah.

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • (Soxbaby is nursing a serious fever, so this might be a short night for me here)

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • Wily Mo jacks one with Tek on on the walk. 2-1 Sox.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • Youk with a double. The Sox are totally ripping Lopez. If they can sustain this kind of contact they will score a bunch.

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:45 pm
  • What the hell was wrong with that 1-1 curveball that Beckett just threw?

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:49 pm
  • That’s a better inning. 1-2-3. Now let’s tag Rodrigo.

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:53 pm
  • Leadoff two-bagger from Papi. Again, Lopez gets totally ripped.

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:56 pm
  • Manny, come on. Bad hitting there – this guy is totally throwing meatballs and Manny tries to pull a piece of junk. Patience, please.

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:57 pm
  • And of course, as soon as I type that Trot hits a laser to right field for a single, too hard to score Papi. 1st/3rd with one out.

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:58 pm
  • Go Captain!

    Cape Codder May 15, 2006, 7:59 pm
  • Tek knocks in Papi with another first pitch swing. Same circumstances, 1/3 1 out. Up comes Lowell.

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:59 pm
  • Tek singles in Ortiz from 3rd, going the opposite way. 3-1, Lowell up.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 8:00 pm
  • Sorry, 1/2 one out. Nixon stopped.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:00 pm
  • I suppose I should occasionally actually check to see if someone’s posted the, you know, same thing as I have.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 8:01 pm
  • Lowell with the free pass. Plugged up for Wily Mo.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:02 pm
  • It’s ok Devine. So far tonight I have posted the incorrect situation at least twice, so odds are your synopses are going to be quite useful.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:03 pm
  • We LOVE Wily Mo going the other way. naother 2 more come in, 5-1 Sox!

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:04 pm
  • 2 more RBI for Wily Mo! He likes that opposite field these days, huh?

    Devine May 15, 2006, 8:05 pm
  • I can’t believe Lopez is still in. Mazzone: what a magician!

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:06 pm
  • A-Gon with a productive at-bat – 6-1 Sox on the sac fly. Come on, Youk.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:08 pm
  • We’re not scared of you anymore, Rodrigo! You hear me?!
*sobs at post-traumatic stress associated with previous beatings from Mr. Lopez*

    Devine May 15, 2006, 8:10 pm
  • 1-2-3 for Beckett. Will Rodrigo come out for more punishment?

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:15 pm
  • Loretta stays hot: rope up the middle for a leadoff single.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:18 pm
  • And Lopez comes back to whiff both Ortiz and Manny. WTF?

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • Lopez makes Ortiz and Manny look foolish in succession on swinging K’s.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 8:23 pm
  • Beckett’s improvement with each inning is exponential at this point. If this trend persists throughout the game, we might be seeing lightning bolts shooting out of the ball by the 8th inning.

    airk May 15, 2006, 8:31 pm
  • Another leadoff hit for the Sox. Let’s cash this in. More runs = good.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:34 pm
  • Good eye, Tek. 1/2 none out. Lopez: still sucking.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:36 pm
  • MikeMikeMike!
8-1 Sox on the Lowell triple.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:39 pm
  • Mike Lowell with the triple!

    airk May 15, 2006, 8:39 pm
  • Perlozzo left Lopez in a long time.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • maybe Perlozzo was occupied doing the math of the maximum number of wins the O’s can get if they lose every matchup with the Sox this year.

    airk May 15, 2006, 8:49 pm
  • Just think, if it weren’t for Leo Mazzone, Rodrigo’s ERA this year would be like 17.28

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:49 pm
  • Beckett looks very good right now.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:50 pm
  • Beckett looks so good tonight except for that one mistake to Tejada. No walks, one hitter, great stuff, getting Conine to chase a breaking ball that almost hit the plate.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:50 pm
  • Another nasty curve from Beckett gets Patterson. 8-1 Sox after 5 full.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:51 pm
  • beckett has had all of his 3 pitches working at the same time tonite. something he hasn’t had since comming out of spring training. some nites the fastball is there (97+), other nites the breakin stuff was there…..oh boy terry to the mound to check on beckett.

    sf rod May 15, 2006, 9:01 pm
  • What happened to Beckett so that he needed checking on?

    Devine May 15, 2006, 9:01 pm
  • he’s pitchin now. maybe to check on blisters…

    sf rod May 15, 2006, 9:02 pm
  • Nifty 1-6-3 dp.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:03 pm
  • beckett turns beauty DP.

    sf rod May 15, 2006, 9:03 pm
  • Nice jumping snag by Beckett to start the DP there.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 9:04 pm
  • 6 pitch 6th.

    sf rod May 15, 2006, 9:04 pm
  • Look at ‘im go.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • Farns is in for the eigth. Too bad there wasn’t enough run support for Moose tonight, though the defense did save his bacon a couple of times.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:12 pm
  • GET OUT OF OUR THREAD!!!!

    SF May 15, 2006, 9:13 pm
  • Oof. Sorry about the cross post.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:14 pm
  • How about this being Josh’s last inning?

    SF May 15, 2006, 9:16 pm
  • Beckett is in for the seventh. Too bad there was too much run support for him tongiht, and the defense didn’t need to save his bacon.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • 80 pitches, 59 for strikes. Two baserunners. Is that sound I hear in the distance Beckett’s “On” switch being flicked? Does he come out for the 8th?

    Devine May 15, 2006, 9:21 pm
  • beckett and nipper appear to be examining a blister in the dugout.

    airk May 15, 2006, 9:23 pm
  • 4-2 rangers in a game that’s about to go into a rain delay.

    sf rod May 15, 2006, 9:24 pm
  • looks like becketts getting a blister…..not gonna come outfor the eigth i think….give him some rest so it doesnt get worse i say

    Nick May 15, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • yeah, no debate if there’s even a hint of a blister.

    airk May 15, 2006, 9:27 pm
  • Oof, the strikeout pitch from Tavarez was killer.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 9:32 pm
  • Why the heck did Tavarez get warned there?

    SF May 15, 2006, 9:32 pm
  • Because he’s Julian Tavarez.

    Hunter May 15, 2006, 9:33 pm
  • Yeah, completely incomprehensible call by the umpire there. A history of violence should not get you warned for no reason.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 9:33 pm
  • NICE pick off the mound to his right by Tavarez there.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 9:35 pm
  • Well, TEX/NYY is done for now, and the delay came a half-an-inning too late. Tavarez really jammed Lopez on that one, followed up by a great strikeout pitch.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:38 pm
  • sadly, thats the first good thing Tavarez has done in weeks.

    airk May 15, 2006, 9:39 pm
  • thats gonna completely ruin some plans for the Sox if it is a blister there, that would mean that dinardo would go sooner than later and depending on how bad it is, i would HATE to see him put on the DL cause of this…..that would put us in the Yankees class for problems regarding our rotation

    Nick May 15, 2006, 9:40 pm
  • Haha! Two-run shot by Varitek to center. Please keep bringing that average up, Cap’n.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 9:46 pm
  • hey, good for Cleveland sports fans: the Cavs juts beat the Pistons.

    airk May 15, 2006, 9:47 pm
  • lowell goes deep!!! mercy rule in effect

    airk May 15, 2006, 9:49 pm
  • Sheesh. Lowell commits felony assault on the demoralized O’s staff with a dinger.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:49 pm
  • Harris has speed in center, too.

    Devine May 15, 2006, 9:57 pm
  • And…good night. Let’s win tomorrow!

    Devine May 15, 2006, 10:00 pm
  • I am committed to posting one of these photos every time Tavarez plays for the Red Sox:

  • From watching SportsDesk after the game, they said Beckett slipped on the mound (it was raining most of the day in Baltimore), and that they didn’t want to take any further risk, plus the bullpen was teetering on having too many days off… But that could all be CYA stuff. I didnt see the NESN feed of Nip and Beckett, so I dunno…
To my mind, it just makes sense. This wasn’t a 2-1 game, where we needed Beckett to go all 9. Those two innings/20-30 pitches he didn’t throw tonight could come in handy later this season. Boy, I hope there’s nothing blister-related going on there tonight.
And he looked AWESOME tonight! Best of the season, for sure. It’s a great day when Lowell and Beckett have great games, to go along with Wily Mo’ 4 RBI and M-Lor’s continued hot streak. It’s games like this where I think, Maybe we DO have a chance … but then, it is just the Orioles… Let’s hope their lineup performs the same miracles for Schilling tomorrow.
