Behold! What Is This Fiery Orb Which Burneth My Eyes? Sox-A’s Gamer IV

Daylight!

After two games begun before sunrise in the states, and a third ending well after sunset, today is a game that will begin and end completely in daylight in all four continental American time zones. No sleepy morning tomorrow, no turning the volume down to avoid awaking the wife and/or kids. Just good, old fashioned, sureptitious GameDay observation when the boss isn’t around. Daytime baseball and pretending to work — two old-fashioned American traditions!

So enjoy the sunshine — you know, theoretically, from inside your cubicle — and comment away!

Sox’ lineup (Drew in, Ellsbury out):

1. 2B-Dustin Pedroia
2. 1B-Kevin Youkilis
3. DH-David Ortiz
4. LF-Manny Ramirez
5. 3B-Mike Lowell
6. RF-J.D. Drew
7. C-Jason Varitek
8. CF-Coco Crisp
9. SS-Alex Cora.

  • No sleepy morning tomorrow, no turning the volume down to avoid awaking the wife and/or kids.
It’ll be nice to not have to do a silent fist-pump when something good happens. I had to practically cover my mouth when Tek was robbed of a homerun last night.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 2:22 pm
  • Ah, a return to Gameday At Work. I am so productive.
Living in LA, I was horribly ticked off that they didn’t show the game on TV last night. It’s one of the few times I could actually get home to watch it in time and they couldn’t be bothered to air it!
I’d get Extra Innings, but I’m just not home before 7 PM PST and would miss the vast majority of games. It’s annoying.

    Micah-SF April 2, 2008, 2:26 pm
  • I understand that Coco provides a lot of value with the glove and that the team wants to showcase him for trades, but I don’t see any real reason to start him over Jacoby today. I think the Sox need to give him the Pedroia treatment and stick with him even though he’s had a slow first few games. Even with his struggles he’s still hitting better than Crisp.

    Bob April 2, 2008, 2:45 pm
  • “the team wants to showcase him for trades”
That’s why, especially in, around, near, trade markets.

    LocklandSF April 2, 2008, 2:48 pm
  • Incidentally, Youk sets the all-time record for consecutive errorless games at first if he makes it through today cleanly.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 2:51 pm
  • Im going to be very sorry to see Coco go. I feel like he has been underappreciated and will bounce back this year, and I’d hate to see him do it for another team.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 2:53 pm
  • Paul, you do realize you just jynxed Youk right?

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 2:55 pm
  • if he did, we will hunt him down and tar and feather him :p

    TJ April 2, 2008, 3:00 pm
  • Pssh. I’m also hoping the Sox win today. Oh no! I jinxed them! Now they will lose! I can’t ever say anything good about any of my favorite players, otherwise they will suck!
Sorry. Outside no-hitters/perfect games, I’m not really on the jinx bandwagon…

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 3:06 pm
  • Blech, I hate this anticipation of the game. Seems like the last 30 minutes take forEVER…

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 3:26 pm
  • I used to be the same way Paul, until announcers started jynxing things all the time. “You know Beckett hasn’t given up a homerun in 24 innings.” BAM! Homerun. it seems like nowadays whenever the announcers say one thing the opposite happens.
And anyways, I’m just joking around with you ;-) This game needs to start NOW. This has been the longest day of work since waiting for Game 1 of the ALDS to start.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 3:30 pm
  • Lester has walked at least three batters in four straight regular-season starts. Average game score: 47. Not good. At least he’s got the World Series start to break things up, though he still walked three in that game, too.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 3:35 pm
  • 2 BB and 8 Ks from Lester today

    TJ April 2, 2008, 3:39 pm
  • BASEBALL BABY!
Pedroia singles, great way to start things off.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 3:40 pm
  • come on Papi give us a fast start today

    TJ April 2, 2008, 3:40 pm
  • Good start! 2 on, no out.

    LocklandSF April 2, 2008, 3:40 pm
  • Lester is the first Red Sox pitcher in 35 years to begin his career (min. 100 IP) with a BB/9 of at least 4.6…
Sure would be nice for Papi to break out here.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 3:42 pm
  • Bases loaded for Manny. Hells yes.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 3:43 pm
  • Latye to the party, but here I am! Just got out of work an hoppe into a local cafe!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 3:44 pm
  • Jesus, this kid can throw hard, 97 on the gun.

    LocklandSF April 2, 2008, 3:46 pm
  • It’s great to see everyone being patient at the plate, though Manny just struck out.
    Come on Lowell!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 3:46 pm
  • You gotta be kidding me. Although this sounds familiar: Bases loaded, quick outs by Manny and Lowell, J.D. Drew up to the plate…

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 3:48 pm
  • DAMNIT, Lowell down swinging too. Let’s go Drew!
He’s really throwing hard Lockland? Gameday only has him hitting 92.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 3:48 pm
  • Sigh, I want to throw my office chair. Drew down on the first pitch.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 3:49 pm
  • My god. I hate this team.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 3:49 pm
  • You really got a hold of that one Drew, first pitch, good thinking.

    LocklandSF April 2, 2008, 3:50 pm
  • Is it too late to become a Royals fan?

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 3:50 pm
  • It’s a good thing we won last night, despite the missed opportunities.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 3:52 pm
  • Terrible inning. When you have the bases loaded, none out, against a pitcher like Harden, you have to capitalize. How incredibly frustrating.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 3:52 pm
  • the offensive juggernaut Detroit lost to KC 4-0 lol

    TJ April 2, 2008, 3:54 pm
  • Is it too late to become a Royals fan?
    nope.

    Brad April 2, 2008, 3:55 pm
  • “My god. I hate this team.”
My god… it’s APRIL. At the very least, you have to wait until May for hate to build up.

    academic-SF April 2, 2008, 3:56 pm
  • “When you have the bases loaded, none out, against a pitcher like Harden, you have to capitalize. ”
Easier said than done. Yanks stranded JD at third after a leadoff triple last night against Halladay. That’s why they pay ‘em the big bucks. (Except in Oakland, so….nevermind?)

    YF April 2, 2008, 3:56 pm
  • KC has some great pitching this year with Grienke, Meche and Bannister. A very tough top of the rotation, if they can get some run support.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 3:56 pm
  • Watch the frakin As show the Sox how to knock men in now. *may have to go home.. doesnt want to break the cafe’s dishes*

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 3:58 pm
  • Lester has gotten to a 1-2 count on all three batters so far. That’s encouraging.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:00 pm
  • Well, two down. Let’s go, Lester!

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 4:00 pm
  • Jack Cust bails us out!

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 4:01 pm
  • Strike 3 to the steroids user! It’s VERY nice to see Lester getting ahead of each hitter, rather than falling behind in the count like he did often last year. Keep it up Jon.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:02 pm
  • Lester induces a grounder from Sweeney and K’s Cust after Barton doubles.
Ha! The A’s can blow run-scoring opportunities too!

    academic-SF April 2, 2008, 4:02 pm
  • Varitek sees all of 2 pitches. Come on Coco, up your value so we can trade high.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:05 pm
  • Yeah Cora!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:07 pm
  • Mr. April, Alex Cora.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 4:07 pm
  • Well, Harden at least seems more hittable today, and Lester’s looked a lot better. So maybe we can overcome the HUGE squander.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 4:09 pm
  • Funny Paul, cause I saw the Sox play the Orioles last April and Cora hit a 2-run homerun.
Pedroia flies out. Youk-Ortiz-Manny up in the 3rd, hopefully we can get something done this time.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:09 pm
  • I’m worried abotu Lester’s PC. Its pretty high and he just walked Crosby.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:13 pm
  • Lester falls behind to Brown and Crosby. Brown bails him out by lining out, whereas Crosby walks on four pitches.
Come on Lester, this is 2008! Don’t fall back to the 2007-Lester!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:13 pm
  • BAM goes the DP. At least Lester could make it a reasonable 6 at this pace…

    Devine April 2, 2008, 4:15 pm
  • Lester heard you, Dio. Double-play leaves Lester at 33 pitches, while Harden is at 38.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:15 pm
  • Lester nibbles like Daisuke, but with out being as good as Daisuke, he doesn’t end up getting the Ks.
    Hooray for the Double play!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:17 pm
  • Lester not as clean that inning. 2-0 and 3-0 counts, plus a walk.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 4:17 pm
  • Youk’s beard is truly ferocious.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:18 pm
  • BOOOOO, Ortiz called out on a ball that looked both high and outside according to gameday.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:20 pm
  • God dammit, Papi.
Manny, if you swing at the first pitch….

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:21 pm
  • Manny walked on 4 pitches. Might as well have been intentional.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:23 pm
  • Manny walks. Mikey.. please? Pretty pretty please?

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:23 pm
  • Lowell grounds out. 5 stranded runners after 3 innings, on track for 15 in the game.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:24 pm
  • Screw this. Screw it all to hell. I’m so mad. If we lose this game because of that first inning squander, I dont know what I’ll do. Someone may get hurt.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:25 pm
  • Don’t worry Dio, I was thinking the same thing last night when Varitek’s homerun was robbed by the umpires. Thankfully it ended up not mattering.
Hannahan (stupid name, btw) singles. Come on Lester, let’s see another DP.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:27 pm
  • I HATE HANNAHAN

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:27 pm
  • Yeah, the DP! Lester learning the value of trusting his defense!

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 4:28 pm
  • BOOYA! Some guy named Denorfia GIDP. Very nice Lester.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:28 pm
  • God, I love double plays.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:29 pm
  • … right before he decides to nibble again. 3-0.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 4:29 pm
  • And then Lester says “Screw you guys, I don’t want a quick inning” and walks Ellis on 4 pitches.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:30 pm
  • Dio! At this rate you’re gonna be in a rubber room by May 15!

    YF April 2, 2008, 4:30 pm
  • But I HATE walks

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:30 pm
  • So far, Lester has been more efficient with his pitches than Harden.

    academic-SF April 2, 2008, 4:31 pm
  • I’m really worried about this team when they have to face a real MLB team.

    LocklandSF April 2, 2008, 4:31 pm
  • Thank goodness Barton pops up on the first pitch, 43 pitches after three for Lester (56 for Harden). Both teams’ hitters are giving a clinic on plate patience tonight, it appears.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:31 pm
  • Drew gets a hit!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:32 pm
  • I think its a bit of an overraction at this point. If these issues persist come the Toronto series perhaps concern should then be shown, but right now there just getting settled into everyday meaningful games.

    TJ April 2, 2008, 4:32 pm
  • ***plants a sign in RF…HIT IT HERE***

    TJ April 2, 2008, 4:33 pm
  • Probably, YF. Probably sooner if we keep up the LOB game at this rate.
To be fair, Hannahan robbed us all night with the glove last night and tied up the game off Snyder in Game 1, so its reasonable to get pissed when he hits.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:33 pm
  • ….
    *vomits*

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:34 pm
  • Gameday is still frozen at “In play, out(s)” for ‘Tek. PLEASE tell me he didn’t GIDP.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:35 pm
  • Goddamnit.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:35 pm
  • Yep, both teams definitely trying to show how not to win a ballgame.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:36 pm
  • ok, he didnt but im lying lol

    TJ April 2, 2008, 4:36 pm
  • OK MEN, Who wants it less? lol

    TJ April 2, 2008, 4:36 pm
  • Technically he didn’t, TJ. He LINED into a double play, whereas I said ground.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:37 pm
  • Hey, silver lining: we didn’t leave anyone on base that inning!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:37 pm
  • Sweeney walked on four pitches. Sigh.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:38 pm
  • Oh God, Lester’s lost the strike zone. This sucks. We’re doomed

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:39 pm
  • Has Lester forgotten how to throw his other pitches? He has thrown nothing but heat to the last few batters.
WHEW, Cust strikes-out for the 2nd time. Let’s see a DP!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:41 pm
  • Wow! Nice play/bad baserunning and we get the unconvential DP!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:45 pm
  • What just happened? It says he FLEW into a DP, Drew to Youk. Did Drew make an amazing catch or something?

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:45 pm
  • From your fingers to God’s ear, Ath.

    rootbeerfloat April 2, 2008, 4:45 pm
  • Up until that pitch, Lester had thrown more balls than strikes.
Did anyone see Brian Bannister and the KC pen shut out the ‘greatest lineup in history’?

    AndrewYF April 2, 2008, 4:45 pm
  • Yes, Drew made a catch that looked unlikely but Sweeney should have been paying more attention.

    rootbeerfloat April 2, 2008, 4:46 pm
  • Harden has a much harder lineup to face.. =P

    Lar April 2, 2008, 4:46 pm
  • Ath, Drew came charging in on a shirt fly. Sweeney assumed it would drop and was all the way to second when the ball landed in Drew’s glove.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:47 pm
  • KC has some great pitching, both in their top three starters (Meche, Bannister and Grienke) and their bullpen. They’d be a good team if they spent a little money and got some good hitters.
I’m still waiting for an explanation as to what just happened in the bottom of the 4th.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:47 pm
  • Ahhh, thanks Dio. And good job to Cora for drawing a walk. Let’s see some OFFENSE!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:48 pm
  • Leadoff walk. Lots of walks in this game. How about a run, Pedroia?

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:48 pm
  • Edes omn Audio (video laggy here at the cafe). He makes me sad as he says the reason he isnt sold on the Jays as a contender is that they lack ‘star power’. Apparently Gordon didn’t learn anythign from Moneyball and Billy Beane. If you put together a GOOD team of unknowns and they perform, the unknowns become stars. *sigh*

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:51 pm
  • Pedroia and Youk both down swinging. PLEASE help us out Papi!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:52 pm
  • Alright Papi. Please please pretty please. An RBI right now will make us all feel better about you.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:53 pm
  • As for facing a “real” MLB team, I think this does a disservice to Rich Harden, whose only concern in his career has been health. He is an ace, and it’s no shame to struggle to score against him (though that first-inning squander was ridiculous). Likewise, Joe Blanton is very good in his home ballpark, so to win one from him when he was obviously on his game strikes me as a good sign, not a bad one.
I just don’t know that Jon Lester is yet capable of winning a pitchers’ duel against Rich Harden though. That first inning gets larger and larger.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 4:54 pm
  • Oh thank goodness Papi got a hit.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:54 pm
  • Papi gets a hit!!!

    rootbeerfloat April 2, 2008, 4:55 pm
  • A HIT! A HIT! Ortizzile gets his first hit!
    Manny, redeem thyself!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 4:55 pm
  • Well now that Papi has gotten the monkey off his back and gotten his first hit, it all gets easier. It’s nothing but lollipops and handjobs from here on out, big guy.
    Now Manny PLEASE DO SOMETHING!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:56 pm
  • *slits wrists*

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 4:57 pm
  • 0-2 on Manny
I have a bad feeling about this.
    SCREW YOU HARDEN >(

    Anonymous April 2, 2008, 4:57 pm
  • Harden is filthy’

    Brad April 2, 2008, 5:00 pm
  • Can I start bitching about LOBs now?
8 last night, 7 already today.
    Crappy situational hitting.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 5:00 pm
  • I’m already bitching, Bill.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:03 pm
  • 5:00 = time to leave. I’ll see you guys when I get home. Hopefully we’ll have a lead by then!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 5:03 pm
  • Last night I was willing to forgive the LOBs because the Sox got a lot of two-out hits in the first place. But, yeah, today has been quite frustrating…

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:04 pm
  • time to do some research …

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 5:05 pm
  • 1-2-3 inning, thank gods.
*goes to grab a London Fog (best drink ever)*

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:05 pm
  • London Fog? enlighten me, Dion.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 5:07 pm
  • have to ask – what’s a London Fog?

    rootbeerfloat April 2, 2008, 5:07 pm
  • lifted?
    Holy crap.
They must be pretty worried about him staying healthy.
    86?

    Brad April 2, 2008, 5:07 pm
  • ouch

    Brad April 2, 2008, 5:08 pm
  • Oh no oh no oh no
    Please god no.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:09 pm
  • Harden gone after five innings! Just 86 pitches. Wow. I guess they’re being extra careful with him given his history. That’s gotta be tough for him…

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:09 pm
  • Whew. Lowell is stayign in. Let’s get some payback boys!
London Fog = Earl Grey tea brewed in steamed vanilla milk (no water at all). Very soothing.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:10 pm
  • GOD FREAKING DAMMIT!
    THIS TEAM IS IMPOSSIBLE!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:11 pm
  • ARGH!!!!!
Ok, put the little Mormon in!

    LocklandSF April 2, 2008, 5:13 pm
  • The Red Sox cannot do anything right today. A’s reliever with little to no control, and the Sox turn a hit-and-run into a double play against one of the worst-throwing catchers in baseball. #$@#$!@$!

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:14 pm
  • Through 37 innings this season, RS have left 27 runners on base.
That does not include the two on base right now with two outs.
I tried to find last year’s MLB LOB stats, but mlb.com has hidden last year’s team stats, so I’ll have to find them later. I’m alread not doing enough work.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 5:17 pm
  • So now Tek walks and Coco gets a hit and that DP looms large as all hell. We’d be ahead right now if it hadn’t been for the statistically stupid concept of the hit and run
    Embree in

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:17 pm
  • This pagination thing is kind of annoying.. =P

    Lar April 2, 2008, 5:18 pm
  • Bases loaded for Pedroia. Now or never, Pedey.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:18 pm
  • Bases loaded though, as Cora gets hit. The small but gutty DPed is up..

    Lar April 2, 2008, 5:19 pm
  • SECOND hit batter of the inning. Now I’m mad! Come on DUSTIN!!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:19 pm
  • FC, so we still got a tight game here..

    Lar April 2, 2008, 5:20 pm
  • *smacks Lar* Hey now! None of thet! Pedroia =/= Eckstein
GOOOOOOD DAMN IT! THIS SUCKS! I’m headign home. I’ll see ya’ll later.

    Anonymous April 2, 2008, 5:20 pm
  • Make that 30 LOBS in 38 innings.
Left the bases loaded twice in this game.
Someone, anyone … don’t the RS emphasize working the pitch count? Or have I just been dreaming that?

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 5:21 pm
  • Not a good day at all for the Sox. Lowell stands still, and the score is 1-0 right now.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:22 pm
  • Fine fine.. ;) I actually do like Pedroia (well, as much as a Yank fan can anyhow..) I’ll give him respect. That said, I wouldn’t mind it if he bats 220 for the year! ;)

    Lar April 2, 2008, 5:23 pm
  • Lester appears to be settling down a bit..

    Lar April 2, 2008, 5:25 pm
  • 87 pitches. I wonder if that’s it for Lester, or if he’ll go out for another.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:28 pm
  • Dio – You might need a shot of something added to that London Fog ;)

    rootbeerfloat April 2, 2008, 5:28 pm
  • Youk kicks us off with the double. Let’s go Papi!

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:31 pm
  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 5:32 pm
  • PAPI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    LocklandSF April 2, 2008, 5:32 pm
  • And there we go, Sox with the lead. I have Ortiz in one of my leagues, so I’m not too sad about it..

    Lar April 2, 2008, 5:33 pm
  • It was just a matter of time!
Bad time for work to intrude on my game watching, though. :-P

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:34 pm
  • Manny just inches away from back to back!

    LocklandSF April 2, 2008, 5:35 pm
  • Jack Cust, personally making sure Lester can get as deep into the game as possible.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:41 pm
  • Looks like Brown hit a dying quail popup off Pedroia’s glove for a single, and that’s all for Lester. Would have liked to at least see him finish the seventh.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:45 pm
  • I’m home and I see my plan to reverse the mojo by leaving the cafe worked like a charm! BOOYA!!!!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:49 pm
  • Tke is on… somehow. Broadcast missed it. A single?

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:51 pm
  • Ortiz waited until I drove home from work to hit a homerun? LAME!
Just kidding, my real reaction is: HELL YEAH!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 5:51 pm
  • Yeah, singled to left.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:52 pm
  • BTW, I swear to god if Corey doesn’t stay on the roster and Snyder does… I will have WORDS for Tito.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:52 pm
  • Same for me Aetheose, I was in the car too! From now on, when we need mojo I’m gonna go sit in my car
    Hit for Coco

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:53 pm
  • Don’t you guys listen to the radio in the car? I swear my husband sits in the driveway until the inning is over.

    soxgirl April 2, 2008, 5:54 pm
  • soxgirl, I live in Pennsylvania. I don’t get Sox radio. I wouldnt even have the game if it wasn’t for mlb.tv

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:55 pm
  • Bases loaded again with 0 outs. Lets see if we can do something this time.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 5:56 pm
  • HAHAHA THIS IS AWESOME!
    SCORE THIS TIME!!!

    Devine April 2, 2008, 5:56 pm
  • Bases loaded AGAIN with no outs.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:56 pm
  • My opponent in fantasy has Pedroia, actually, this week. Grumble grumble.. haha.. he has all these opportunities..

    Lar April 2, 2008, 5:56 pm
  • Dion, even if you do only get the home team broadcasts, XM is worth it.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 5:57 pm
  • I live in VA, soxgirl. I drove 85 on the freeway to get home from work.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 5:57 pm
  • My opponent in fantasy has Pedroia, actually, this week. Grumble grumble.. haha.. he has all these opportunities..

    Lar April 2, 2008, 5:57 pm
  • DUSTIN! HECK YEAH! RUn scores and time for WonderBeard

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 5:57 pm
  • All right, Pedey! Youks up, bases still jacked! Keep the insurance runs coming!

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 5:58 pm
  • Wow, four straight singles through the left side of the infield! Bases still loaded with 0 outs, Sox up 3-0.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 5:58 pm
  • I see the strategy today: Leave 10 runners on base, then start scoring runs.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 5:59 pm
  • I dont spend enough time on the road, Bill. I work 5 minutes from where I live. 10 if there’s traffic. I’m gonna be even CLOSER to work at my new store once I move to outside Philly (technically in Jersy but not really) next week.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:00 pm
  • Ath & Dio – Sorry I assume everyone but me lives in Boston. It is the Hub, you know.

    soxgirl April 2, 2008, 6:02 pm
  • yeah, baby.
So, Delcarmen to close it off?

    Brad April 2, 2008, 6:03 pm
  • 5th straight single! Come on Ortiz, do it again.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 6:03 pm
  • YOUK! Another run in! Not testing any arms, as Cora holds.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:03 pm
  • I have XM, but of course that’s at home, and I’m at work. In the Central time zone, it’s only just now 5 p.m.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 6:03 pm
  • Fullc ount. Nowhere to put ‘im.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:06 pm
  • I’m thinking the same thing, Brad.
Soxgirl, I’m in the Chicago western suburbs.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 6:06 pm
  • Live in NYC over here…Yankee fans at work all the time. Gah.
    I wanna Manny granny.

    Devine April 2, 2008, 6:06 pm
  • I really dislike this new format of “older” and “newer” comments options.
First time in months I could actually leave work, but stay here so I don’t miss the end of this. ha.

    Brad April 2, 2008, 6:06 pm
  • Manny, Lowell only Sox starters w/out a hit.
    Let’s change that.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 6:07 pm
  • Ouch. Huge K there on Ortiz. s’ok David. We still love you.
Manny, get some payback. Or at least get the game to Lowell who I KNOW wants revenge for getting hit then caught stealing.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:07 pm
  • Nein! Ah well.

    Devine April 2, 2008, 6:07 pm
  • WHY WHY WHY WHY on the first pitch Manny? Who ARE you?

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:07 pm
  • Then again …

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 6:08 pm
  • Oof. Coulda had a lot more there, but at least we got two. Manny has failed to advance eight baserunners today.

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 6:08 pm
  • OK, I’m off for home. Gotta go.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 2, 2008, 6:08 pm
  • Corey staying out for the eighth. Probably Lil’ Manny in the 9th.
    SH!T! basehit. Bear down Corey.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:11 pm
  • AHHHH Lopez sighting!
Nice breaking ball there Corey for strike 2.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:12 pm
  • 3-2. Come on Corey. GOT HIM! (Btw I liek Hannahan’s little bit of irish jig music when he comes to the plate)

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:13 pm
  • I say we dump Snyder and Lopez, keep Corey and Aardsma. How difficult is this?

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 6:14 pm
  • Unfortunatly, I think its gonna be very difficult Paul.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:15 pm
  • Ouch. Almost a DP there, but Dustin booted it. GOOD reflexes though to still get the out at first. Quick mind.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:16 pm
  • Ooooooo I just almost defecated in my pants.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:18 pm
  • There it is! K! Keep Corey on this team!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:19 pm
  • Corey with another K! One more inning to go…

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 6:19 pm
  • JESUS that long foul ball almost gave me a heart attack.
Am I the only one who likes Snyder? He’s great for long relief, and can spot start too.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 6:20 pm
  • WTG, Corey.

    Devine April 2, 2008, 6:20 pm
  • Except he’s NOT great for long releif, Ath. Tavarez is better and you don’t need two of those. Plus Tavarez can terrify opposing teams with his knives. Nothing about Snyder is scary… to the opposition at least.
Ugh, Mikey with a rough night.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:22 pm
  • Tavarez in the 9th? I was expecting Delcarmen. It’s only a four run lead. Hunh.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:24 pm
  • Home run distance, but foul. Tek still has some pop.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:25 pm
  • TEK!!!!!!! THAT ONE WASNT FOUL!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:26 pm
  • Varitek with his second first home run of the series!

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 6:26 pm
  • Can’t take that one away, eeeet waaaaasn’t fooooouuuuuuul. 5-0. We own Street.

    Devine April 2, 2008, 6:27 pm
  • Wow, when did Tek become the hottest player on the team??

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 6:27 pm
  • Oooo! Paul… I think Manny and Tek had their bodies switched!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:28 pm
  • Wow, when did Tek become the hottest player on the team??
Do you mean skill-wise, or physically? Cause ‘Tek has always been a stud with the ladies. And by “the ladies” I mean every girl I’ve ever dated.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 6:28 pm
  • I mean.. doesnt making outs on the first pitch seem like what we expect from Tek? And good at bats what we expect from Manny? I suspect some sort of Silver Age DC villian is behind this!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:30 pm
  • Lil’ Manny! Hooray!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:31 pm
  • BAD shorts on that fan. *shudder*
Nice play by Cora and also a nice pick by Youk!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:33 pm
  • One.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:33 pm
  • Manny falls behidn 3-0 with Cust on deck. Now 3-1.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:34 pm
  • Two!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:36 pm
  • Hey I’ve got a question. I’m going to Opening Day next Tuesday and I haven’t been to Boston since I lived there when I was 8. Is there public transportation from Logan to Fenway? Or should I just take a cab?

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 6:36 pm
  • Atheose – What’s up with that? The women behind me at last night’s game could not stop swooning about Tek – had to explain a few new words to my second grader.

    rootbeerfloat April 2, 2008, 6:37 pm
  • THREE!! Ballgame!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:37 pm
  • Sweeeeeeet. 3-1 on the road (even against the A’s) is nice.

    Devine April 2, 2008, 6:37 pm
  • Congrats to Youk, who now holds the all time record of consecutive games at 1st base without an error.

    LocklandSF April 2, 2008, 6:38 pm
  • Great game. Wait out Harden, then beat up the bullpen. Lester was brilliant. Optimism reigns!

    Paul SF April 2, 2008, 6:38 pm
  • I have one thing to say right now…
    WATER!

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:39 pm
  • Lester was pretty good, Paul. I wouldnt say brilliant. A better team may have tagged him. His 42-53 ball to strike ratio is not what I want to be seeing.
Youk now has a record under his name. Awesome.

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:41 pm
  • WATER!
That was an annoyingly stressful game for a shutout, too many men LOB, but I’ll take it. :)

    Micah-SF April 2, 2008, 6:44 pm
  • That’s funny, RBF. I can see why they think he’s hot–he is a very good looking man. Timlin is another one that seems to draw the attention of girls I’ve dated.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 6:47 pm
  • *finishes listening to Dirty Water and cues up tessie*

    Dionysus April 2, 2008, 6:47 pm
  • Oakland: 11 runs in 4 games. Credit the Sox for good pitching, and yeah, small sample, but man…gonna be a lotta frustrating nights in Oaktown this year.

    YF April 2, 2008, 6:50 pm
  • toasty’s refound his old form. sign him to a 12 year extension today theo!

    sf rod April 2, 2008, 6:50 pm
  • BREAKING NEWS: Pedro is on the DL.

    Atheose April 2, 2008, 6:52 pm
  • My wife perks up quite a bit when Mike Lowell is at the plate but I think she keeps it quiet so our son doesn’t sing the “sitting in a tree” song.
