Better Late: Yanks-A’s Gamer II

Well, our YF authors have neglected their duties.  Perhaps it’s the demoralization that comes after 2/3 of the starting staff goes down with injuries.  Perhaps it’s the fact that the Sox look to be somewhat for real, and they’re just plain scared.  Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s Saturday night, the game started at 9pm EST, and everyone has better things to do than sit at home and chat about baseball.  We’re not placing bets.

Regardless, here’s your (late) game thread for the remainder of the West Coast affair between the A’s and the Bombers.

  • Yanks back within one and threatening – Cabrera slices one to left driving in Cano. Blanton looks terrible.

  • Kendall on base with a single, Scutaro out, Stewart up

    rootbeerfloat April 14, 2007, 10:27 pm
  • Stewart is sucking leadoff thus far this season. They really should drop him down until he gets his swing. No leadoff man should be battign below .250, much less below .200

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 10:31 pm
  • Okay, so why is Henn warming up? He’d BETTER not be out there to start the sixth, Rasner doesn’t have 100 pitches yet. Don’t do it, Joe!

    Andrew April 14, 2007, 10:34 pm
  • I have to disagrree with Adnrew.. he absolutley SHOULD do it! Thats right.. burn out your bullpen, baby! Wooo!

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 10:35 pm
  • I say you walk A-Rod here

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 10:39 pm
  • Hah, well, you got your wish Dio.

    Andrew April 14, 2007, 10:40 pm
  • Well, it only makes sense. He’s batting 398, dinging homers left and right, dinged on last at bat and your down by one run with two outs.
Meanwhile Giambi is battign below .200 so.. much better chance of gettign out of the innign agaisnt him

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 10:42 pm
  • And Gameday slows up and I dont know whats happening.. last I saw it was 1-1 on Giambi… any word? Tell me he made an out.

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 10:43 pm
  • Yeah, a 150-foot bomb to center.

    Andrew April 14, 2007, 10:45 pm
  • He made an out.

    mouse - SF April 14, 2007, 10:46 pm
  • GOD DAMN IT JOE TORRE YOU NEED A BULLPEN MANAGER (aka an old-man walker).
He just can’t manage games anymore. Rasner just got Piazza, Yankee-killer out on one pitch, and he comes out after 70+ pitches. Wtf.

    Andrew April 14, 2007, 10:48 pm
  • *falls over laughing maniacally* Even if the Yanks win this one (which is very possible with those bats) this bullpen mismanagement will hurt them down the line.

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 10:50 pm
  • I said it at the vbery end of last Yankee Game thread. One of the thigns that hurt the Yankees late in the season was their bullpen was rather worn out. Sure, they went on to the post season anyway (yes, I know the Sox didn’t), but still.. not a good thing.
Sometimes you can’t help your bullpen beign used up… starters cant go deep – as has been happening lately. However tongiht, Rasner CLEARLY could have gone another inning or two.
    Glee!

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 10:53 pm
  • Cano is so pissed at Torre’s insanity that he’s taking the longest at bat in order to chase Blanton.

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 10:54 pm
  • Posada is coming in – why was he out to begin with? He’s not hurt is he?

    rootbeerfloat April 14, 2007, 10:57 pm
  • Posada gets one off day a week. It’s smart, it’s what every ballclub does.
Anyway, guaranteed you see Mo tonight. Man needs work, and with the off-day Monday, you can use him tomorrow without risking needing him three days in a row.

    Andrew April 14, 2007, 10:59 pm
  • Cano scores, game tied

    rootbeerfloat April 14, 2007, 11:00 pm

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 11:01 pm
  • PERFECT AT BAT.
Now you get to see the cream of the Oakland bullpen, which is pretty darn good.
Guess who’s at the bottom of the depth charts for the 8th inning tonight?

    Andrew April 14, 2007, 11:02 pm
  • If I see Farns in there in a tie game, I may join that lynch mob Dio was talking about…

Oooh, Every Day Scotty is up in the ‘pen. And I guess that’s why having Minky at first isn’t such a bad thing.

    yankeemonkey April 14, 2007, 11:07 pm
  • (And having Phelps is). But Proctor gets out of the jam, game still tied. Phew.

    yankeemonkey April 14, 2007, 11:21 pm
  • Ah, Jeter with 2 errors. Is he going to win Gold Glove this year?

    Lar April 14, 2007, 11:22 pm
  • Perhaps the likelihood of GG is inversely proportional to # of errors, i.e., the more you make, the better your chances? How else to explain Jeter’s GG last season?

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 11:49 pm

    Dionysus April 14, 2007, 11:59 pm

    I'm Bill McNeal April 15, 2007, 12:01 am
  • Wait.. wait… I got it.
    The bullpen phone is staticy
Torre said “I needz da Mo!”
The bullpen heard “I need Vizcaino!”

    sf rod April 15, 2007, 12:04 am

D1: I think if Yanks lose here with Mo on the bench, any and all anti-Torre vitriol is well-deserved. Unless he’s hurt, there’s no reason for what Torre is doing.
More ugly defense by NYY. Blergh.

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 12:06 am
  • Hard play by Abreu, he was playing back. But we can’t get one defensive break.
Now would be the time for Mo, but there was just a popout.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 12:06 am
  • Not to worry, YF’s…Shannon Stewart’s about as dangerous as Coco Crisp. Which is to say, not at all.
NY hands the game over on a silver platter, Oakland says, “No thanks.”

Meanwhile, Viz gets out of trouble. Phew.

Oh I know, it’s just that he has three times as many AB’s playing first as he does DH’ing. I guess I have a bit of trouble understanding how sitting on your ass between at-bats can make you a worse hitter…

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 12:47 am
  • Wow. Two straight strikes called balls. Maybe Farnsworth can give the ump his glasses.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 12:48 am
  • Holy crap,a walk from Mo on four pitches.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 15, 2007, 12:49 am
  • Correlation isn’t casuation! ;) You can also say that he usually DH when he’s tired (to get an “off-day”) or when he’s half-injured, which might account for it..

    Lar April 15, 2007, 12:49 am
  • Yeah, that was kind of my point. He’s probably been DH when either tired or sore. Though the early returns his first season as a full-time DH aren’t exactly stellar…
There’d be a runner on second if Kendall had just taken that first pitch. Ugh.

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 12:51 am
  • Man, these games are like pulling teeth.

    yankeemonkey April 15, 2007, 12:52 am
  • and we thought Coco was bad.. here we have a guy with a .064 battign average. Dont the A’s have any pinch hitters? A man is on! A doubel wins the game!

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 12:52 am
  • Wow, Jeter’s range really sucks to his left. A normal shortstop would have been seven feet tall and fielded that ball in his sleep.
We should be out of this inning by now, if the ump weren’t blind.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 12:52 am
  • Ya, I just made it more explicit..
I was at batting practice the other day (just playing around) at a 70-80 mph cage.. and apparently they miscalibrated it, because it hit me on the thigh. This was a week ago, and the bruise is still there..
Of course, I don’t get paid (in fact, I paid) for the experience, so maybe he should’ve took one for the team..

    Lar April 15, 2007, 12:53 am
  • Andrew…what?

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 12:54 am
  • no flail needed captain.

    sf rod April 15, 2007, 12:54 am
  • d1 – Jeter caught a would-be bloop hit to his left on a jump.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 12:55 am
  • And.. again. Into the 12th, top of the order (plus Posada) vs the daaaaaaangerous Lenny DiNardo
If the Yankees dont score, then they can’t call themselve the “Bronx Bombers” for a week.

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 12:56 am
  • Alright, that’s it for me.
    I’m off to bed.
    Adios, muchachos.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 15, 2007, 12:57 am
  • Is Mo a 1-inning-only guy now or what? Bruney’s up in the pen.

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 12:57 am
  • and added flair so everyone knew about it.

    sf rod April 15, 2007, 12:57 am
  • Mo looks angry. Now, if (God forbid!) Yanks score this inning, does Joe let him close it out? Or does he stick to the 1-inning rule?

    yankeemonkey April 15, 2007, 12:57 am
  • monkey, considering Joe Torre’s bullpen management this game.. he probably has Mo pinch hit in this innign, then comes in himself to pitch the bottom

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:00 am
  • More like “Bronx Bummers”.

    yankeemonkey April 15, 2007, 1:00 am
  • And by himself I meant Torre.. Torre pitches the bottom of the 12th

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:00 am
  • Joe is just pissed he can’t send Vizcaino or Proctor back out there.

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:01 am
  • Nah. Guidry can still throw an inning, can’t he?

    yankeemonkey April 15, 2007, 1:02 am
  • Jeter grounds out. No DP though. He’s not trying to lose hard enough! He should take some hints from the A’s on how to try and lose.. they sent freakin Lenny Dinardo to the mound!

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:04 am
  • OK, the Yanks have stranded a small army on the bases tonight….I can’t take it anymore, I’m out. Will read the highlights tomorrow.
    Let’s go Yankees!

    yankeemonkey April 15, 2007, 1:05 am
  • Coolest way this game could end: Abreu walks, A-Rod hits RBI single, boots an easy groundball in the bottom of the inning to give up the lead again anyway. :-)
Incidentally, while I understand why DiNardo got away from Boston, I’m not happy about it. They never gave him a chance to really cut his teeth in the bigs; he dominated AAA a few years ago yet spent the full season down there anyway. Makes no sense; clearly he shouldn’t be a starter, but he’s off to a pretty good start as a full-time MR.

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:05 am
  • And.. the meat of the Yankee lineup is silenced by the mighty Dinardo.
Ok, I’ll offer the YFs a choice
for one week They can no tbe refered to as the BRonx Bombers..
or they have to call themselves the New York Lennys for a week.

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:06 am
  • BEst way to end it..
    Freakin Shannon Stewart goes yard.
Instead *gasp* he Ks. I hate you Stewart, I hate you.

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:09 am
  • Never thought I’d be rooting so hard for Lenny DiNardo again. So who’s in the pen after Bruney, who already went an inning last night? Pettitte again?

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:09 am
  • Oakland is SO fricken BAD. Haha, good work Joe; Bruney is literally the last man in the bullpen. Oak’s got 3, including the always dominant Justin Duchscherer.
    13th…

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:11 am
  • What’s funny is that I checked the score in the eighth and it was tied, and I thought, “Well, I’ll see who won after I watch this two-hour movie.” Har.

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:11 am
  • Only starters left, Paul. And most are injured.. so yeah, my bet is Pettite. But then does he still make his start? I fnot then who? Oh what a tangeled web we weave…

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:12 am
  • You’d think the heart of the A’s lineup might have wanted to make Bruney throw a few more than 11 pitches in the 12th inning. Though I imagine both sides are exhausted.

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:12 am
  • the answer is…..philip hughes.

    sf rod April 15, 2007, 1:12 am
  • They are leavign DiNardo in to face A-Rod.. MAN they really really want to lose.

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:14 am
  • Another 6.2 innings and counting (guaranteed at leastt 7.2) for the Yanks’ pen tonight. That’s more than 40 innings in 10 games. Four innings per game from the pen, over 162 games? 648 innings! Have fun with that in September…

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:14 am
  • can we get lenny back?

    sf rod April 15, 2007, 1:15 am
  • Andd A-Rod takes strike three! LEN-NY! LEN-NY!

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:15 am
  • I told you. DiNardo always had great potential but was never used properly. The lefty-heavy NY lineup is perfect for him.
Is what I was in the process of typing until Giambi did that. So is he just going to sorta, hit below the Mendoza line all year, and then homer to tie and/or go ahead once every week or two?

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:17 am
  • and Gimabi goes yard.
I told them not to leave Lenny in there.
    Good night folks

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:17 am
  • Any YFs concerned yet about Giambi’s sub-.300 OBP yet? That’s Coco Crisp territory, and Coco ain’t getting $20 mil and hitting fifth.

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:17 am
  • Well, that’s one way to beat the shift.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 1:18 am
  • Moral of the story: Don’t throw a weak FB around the belt on the inner half of the plate. If you do, Giambi will crush it. Anywhere else he’s more likely to pop or ground out.
    Reminds me of “Slammin” Sammy…

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:18 am
  • By the way.. if I wake up tommorrow and the game is still going on somehow? I shall not be a bit surprised.

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:18 am
  • Aaaand GameCast makes me look dumb. Thaaaat’s the DiNardo we all remember. Lefty on lefty, throw three straight balls then groove one. Goodd job, pal. Here’s rooting for an A’s run in the 13th, just to help this game get realllly interesting.

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:19 am
  • Giambi!!!!! Paul, not worried at all about Giambi. He will lock in and then its lights out.

    WeMissPaulie April 15, 2007, 1:20 am
  • Fuck. Cano is a disaster on the bases tonight.
    Dio, it IS tomorrow.

    yankeemonkey April 15, 2007, 1:20 am
  • Three words with the quadrupled consenant for emphasis. Someone’s in a rut.
Two more balls to Cano before finally throwing a strike an giving up a single. Figures it’d be DiNardo to ruin it.

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:21 am
  • Lenny hits two former Red Sox players. Maybe he’s mad they went to the Dark Side?

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:21 am
  • It’s not over yet.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 1:22 am
  • Ok, let’s go A’s! Knock around Bruney (or the mystery reliever) for a run. It shouldn’t be hard — you did it last night! Or two nights ago, or yesterday morning. Or whatever…

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:23 am
  • Say it aint so, monkey
Pettite and whoever the As send better go 9 today because this bullpen is wasted.

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:24 am
  • Four-pitch walk to Chavez. Goodd start.

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:24 am
  • 4 pitch walk, at least two of them weren’t even close. Dun-dun-dun…
Actually the A’s pen isn’t really in bad shape; they’ve only used 4 relievers tonight, compared to NY’s 7. Yeah, if Andy doesn’t go 7 or 8 tomorrow, NY’s in a lot of trouble.

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:26 am
  • The “d” on this keyboard sticks, which is why sometimes I have repeating d’s in my posts… I’m going to stop worrying about correcting them all because it’s too late for me to care. So now you know…

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:26 am
  • Haha, Posada misses a popup near the dugout. Sorta a tough play, but he really shoulda had it…dropped right next to him. Though it did almost hit the dugout roof.

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:27 am
  • Is Rivera the only Yankee reliever not to have gone back-to-back days? Cuz the Yanks used a butt-load yesterday, too.

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:28 am
  • Walker throwing up a good at bat..

    Lar April 15, 2007, 1:28 am
  • Walker doing everything he can to make sure Bruney gets tendonitis at some point in the coming days or weeks…

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:29 am
  • I predict Rasner gets sent down and someone like Britton or Villone gets called up for tomorrow.
    Walker getting dangerously close.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 1:29 am
  • Bruney already thrown as many pitches to Chavez and Walker as he didd the whole 12th inning. Goodd job by those hitters making him work…

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:29 am
  • Thats ok Paul. My typing is ALWAYS bad. I never spell check and think faster than my fingers move.
Todd Walker says “Well, I’ll probably make an out.. but might as well ruin this bullpen even more by battling”

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:30 am
  • Phew.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 1:30 am
  • Looked like that one went to the wall. A couple years ago and that wouldda been a home run ;-).

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:30 am
  • I think you’re right, Andrew. Bruney’s down to 91 on the gun…not good.
Fuck I thought Crosby had it…

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:31 am
  • Andrew – I was thinking of saying the same thing, ah well! Bruney is giving me a heart attack though, but that’s probably because I’ve been spoiled by years of Mo!

    Lar April 15, 2007, 1:31 am
  • Oh my god.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 1:31 am
  • The A’s are supposed to have goo young hitters. Apparently they have yet to learn the art of TAKING PITCHES!

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:31 am
  • Game over, finally!

    Lar April 15, 2007, 1:32 am
  • Ok.. good night for real folks.
That was a ridiculous game. Both teams should be ashamed.

    Dionysus April 15, 2007, 1:33 am
  • Oakland’s offense is as bad as KC’s. Christ…Bruney was throwing low 90’s down the middle of the f*cking plate and they did nothing with any of it. Pathetic.

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:33 am
  • Or, you know, taking at the wrong time. :-P I wonder if Joe Torre might think twice tomorrow about taking Pettitte out if he gets in trouble in, say, the sixth?

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:34 am
  • Paul – well, Buck took those pitches!

    Lar April 15, 2007, 1:34 am
  • With NY’s luck, Pettitte will come up lame with a hammy injury covering first in the third inning. A-Rod will be forced to pitch in the 15th inning of a tie game, and blamed by the media when the Yankees lose.

    desturbd1 April 15, 2007, 1:36 am
  • Sans Jeter’s error in the first, the Yankees would be sitting pretty.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 1:36 am
  • Just an incredible show of ineptitude by both these teams for something like 25 straight innings. George Mitchell needs to launch an investigation into what these guys are eating and ban *that* from baseball.

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 1:42 am
  • On a lighter note, Yankee pitching went 12 straight scoreless innings tonight!
On a sorrowful note, Brian Bruney just buried his recently amputated right arm. The Yankees will deduct the cost of a brand new bionic arm from his yearly salary, so that Bruney now owes the Yankees 12 years of service.

    Andrew April 15, 2007, 2:12 am
  • thanks for starting the post sf…
“…Four innings per game from the pen, over 162 games? 648 innings! Have fun with that in September…”…i dunno paul, sounds like wishful thinking to me…like saying dmat is 1-1, so he’ll be no better than a .500 pitcher…yanks starters have been nicked up a bit so far, and while that could be the pattern for the entire year, there’s an equal chance that won’t be the case and things will settle into a rythm…we might actually get some quality starts, and the bullpen might get some rest, or not…
and, did you like the way joe used farnsworth in a high leverage situation?…brilliant…
other than that all i have to say is:
    …yyyyyyyyaaaaaaayyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!….

    dc April 15, 2007, 9:11 am
  • I did like that, dc. I hope Joe uses Farnsworth in every high-lev situation he can!

    Paul SF April 15, 2007, 9:34 am
  • uh, it worked….hee hee
so far so good with tito’s strategy, but i’d be more worried about pap being overworked than the yankee pen, particularly if the sox bullpen doesn’t gel, and if your starters struggle and/or have some bumps and bruises [remember it’s only been about 10 games out of 162], because then every situation will be high leverage…he can only hide the rest of the pen behind the starters and pap for so long…

    dc April 15, 2007, 9:59 am
