Billy Beane’s Sh*t Don’t Work in the Playoffs

It did today, and it barely took two hours. Behind 5-plus no-hit innings from Barry Zito (somewhere, Scott Boras is smilling) and two dingers from Frank Thomas (who will henceforth be the posterboyman for Beane’s exploit-the-market strategies), the A’s dispatched Johan Santana and the Twins in the Metrodome, (they have now lost 5 straight playoff games there). This one looks like it could go the distance.

  • wow, frank thomas.
it looks like zito will get that big contract after all. i wrote the A’s off, but it looks like they have a fighting chance.

  • On the one hand, it’s just one game, and we all know how the playoffs work – it may mean nothing when all is said and done. However, the fact that it was in the Metrodome and it was Santana pitching makes it a huge result, I think. The Twinkies will do bloody well to come back from this.

  • From the hour of the game I watched during my lunch break, I was not so much impressed by Zito’s performance (he threw just half of his first 45 pitches for strikes, and many of those were outs caused by ill-advised swings on still more pitches outside the zone).
I was struck instead by how Ron Gardenhire’s “aggressive” style of play at the plate (read: swing at everything) played right into Zito’s hands. He was having trouble with the strike zone (curve balls in the dirt, fastballs missing up high), and the Twinkies still kept flailing away, getting popups and groundouts on pitches they should have laid off. They’re not going far if they don’t reverse a whole season of poor plate discipline and learn some patience in the next two games.

  • BTW: Cards take out Pods in Game 1 of the NLDS, on a Pujols homer and solid work from Chris Carpenter.
