"The teams that are involved, I think they’ve got really good clubs
that are together, and if somebody stubs their toe and my phone rings
in May, I might have to think about it."
–Roger Clemens, February 17, 2007
Well, that didn’t take long. It turns out the call came in March from Joe Torre and Brian Cashman. Sources close to Roger Clemens and the Yankees are confirming that the aging great has decided to come to the Bombers’ rescue. With Chien-Ming Wang injured, Andy Pettitte’s back acting up, and Carl Pavano starting the opener, the Yanks supposedly put the full-court press on, luring the Rocket back with a generous contract offer topping $22 million for the period he will pitch. As part of the deal, Clemens’ target start date with the ball club is early May. Never a dull moment in Yankeeland!
