They do seem to lack the confidence that those Yankee teams from the 1996-2000 era had. Back then, you knew – KNEW – they would find a way to win.
It’s frustrating. We have great players who just don’t seem to perform to their capabilities. But, it’s still April and we’re only 4 games out, so there’s hope. Getting Alex back will help defensively and offensively, but the ‘pen is a black hole right now.

Man I can’t wait until ARod gets back…hopefully he can give the lineup the boost it needs.
Now the pitching staff is another story. I’m really hoping that once the weather gets warmer, the staff will start pitching better.
I read something today that Austin Jackson is tearing up AAA, may be up middle of the year? Gardner is horrible so that would be an upgrade…
I know it’s early but still…feels like another shit year.

As I said in the gamer, the Sox own the Yankees in April. We havent taken a series in boston in april since 1995! The team is at .500, reinforcements are coming. Dont worry!

Is Jackson supposed to be the REAL real deal, or the Phil Hughes/Ian Kennedy real deal?
As long as he isnt Clay Bucholz “real” we should be ok! Seriously, though can this question every be answered until a player plays in the bigs? Phil Hughes was considered by basically every one to be one of the best prospects in the game and was not simply boosted by the Yankees. Id argue that the window for him to be successful hasnt passed either given he is 22 still.

NY sports radio has been abuzz about how the sox own mo. many callers and hosts have used the old excuse “the sox have seen him so much over the years…”. that may be true but jason bay had had exactly 2 career AB’s versus mo before friday nite.

Bowden has one of the fugliest deliveries I’ve ever seen. It looks like he’s palming the ball. It travels like a yo-yo.
My confidence level in this is still 7 out of a possible 10.

I’m going to watch the game tonight. It’s my birthday and I can’t remember the last time we lost on my birthday? Hell, I even watched Gei Igawa beat the Sox on my b-day a few years ago. Plus, if CC actually pitches a good game for once, I may not have to take my own life so that would be pretty sweet.

I used to watch him when I was a kid and he was on the Buffalo Bisons!! Man, was that the late 80’s maybe??? The guy is a warrior…more heart than the entire sorry-ass Yankee team put together! (aside from Jeter and Mo of course)

I am watching this on gamecast…but how does Lowell (bum hip and all) manage a triple on what appeared to be a shallow fly to center?…missed dive?

Yeah, bad dive, ball got by and rolled almost to the track (I think) for the Lowell 3B. Bay Manny’d that HR a little, flipped his bat, clearly knew it was gone.

9-10 baby!!! Hughes gets rocked tomorrow and it’s 9-11…man, this is going to be a great season. I can’t wait to see how long it takes this team to completely implode…

Actually Krueg, we won like 13 in a row in July or August of 2006. Once the streak ended though we crashed pretty hard. So I’m always wary of long winning streaks.

You must have blocked out August ’06 pretty well, Ath, ’cause there was definitely no winning streak that month…the Sox were like 1-27. (Fine, it was more like 7-21 or something…it was awful at any rate.)
The Sox won at least 10 in a row in ’04 and something like 21 of 23 late in the season. Winning streaks are good as long as you have steady wins elsewhere in the season.

Ath is right about the 2006 winning streak. Only it did not happen in July or August. It was a 12 game winning streak lasting from June 16th to June 29th. And yes, we did crash pretty hard in August.
But not this year …

The nice thing is that I still think the Sox, having not spent a half billion dollars this year, are going to make a few nice moves at the trading deadline with teams who are not only out of it, but going broke.
That being said, no team is as good or bad as they are when they’re on a streak of either wins or losses. Both teams are probably somewhere in the middle of what they look like now. But, I do believe NY’s bullpen is exactly as bad as it looks.

We know you weren’t, Krueg. I think Ath was just pointing out that a long winning streak does not guarantee a successful season.
The Yankees will come around and though I agree with Brad that the bullpen does not look too good it will get better once Bruney’s back.

The Yankees had a ten game winning streak in 2005 (from May 7th to May 17th). They also had ten game winning streaks in 1998, 1994 and 1987. Their last eleven game winning streak dates back to 1985 (August 31st to September 10th). (all this according to baseball.reference.com)

Ahh my bad. I blocked out the entire August/September of 2006, so my memories from April-July obviously stretched and shifted in order to fill the gap.
But yeah, I’m always wary of long winning streaks, because when the team returns to earth they seem to crash VERY hard. Paul wrote up a fantastic post about it back in like 2007, search for it if you get a chance.
