  • Thanks, AG. Was just checking to make sure one was up.

  • lugo continues his soon to be starting hit parade with a leadoff blast.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • No problemo Paul.

    attackgerbil June 8, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • unfortunately it’s the hardest ball i’ve even seen lugo hit. but i’m in the “hold off judgement till july on lugo” camp.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • After that groundout, Drew is now 5 for 31 in this plus his last ten games.

    attackgerbil June 8, 2007, 9:55 pm
  • davis throws behind lugo. lugo stares out to the mound. didn’t look intentional but is suspicious circumstances.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 10:20 pm
  • lugo walks. pedroia is robbed by some kid in left. papi flys to the track. manny scorches one to center. jd hits a 3 run job to deep center. we’re breaking out of this slump right before my eyes.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 10:25 pm
  • jd might just be a NL only type of guy. that would be a big problem.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 10:26 pm
  • um……that might have been the worst baseball play i have ever seen. lugo waits for some kid to stand up after a slide at second base and tags him while he’s off the bag dusting himself off. time was never called. lugo being lugo. tonite is the nite he busts out tonite. saved the sox a run.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 10:43 pm
  • Yeah, that was a nifty variant on the hidden ball trick.

    attackgerbil June 8, 2007, 10:49 pm
  • Dirty play ;-)
Julio Lugo and J.D. Drew have hit home runs in the same game.
In other news, the moon has turned blood red, the sky has been rolled back like a scroll and meterologists believe a large comet named Wormwood is hurtling toward earth.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 10:52 pm
  • Ah, but Drew returns with the Patented J.D. Drew Strikeout With Men on Base. Still got one on the Manny hit. 5-1 Sox, and Beckett seems to be pitching well enough to make that stand up.
    Knock on wood, of course.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 10:55 pm
  • manny fists one into left. perdroia scores from second. jd has a chance to feast on the carcass that is doug davis. aaaaaand whiff. welcome back the AL jd.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 10:56 pm
  • Beckett Ks Hudson looking for strikeout No. 4. Just 35 pitches entering the fourth inning for Beckett. Up to 41 after that at-bat. Still a great pace…

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 10:58 pm
  • Groundout on the third pitch for Conor Jackson. You figure if the old, blow-em-away Beckett could be an ace in the NL, this new while-and-guile Beckett that’s acing up the AL should have some pretty good outings through Interleague Play….

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:00 pm
  • Stephen Drew, gone on the second pitch. 46 pitches through four. He’s cruisin’…

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:01 pm
  • becketts been kneebuckeling with the curve tonite.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 11:02 pm
  • Staying up late for this one, Rod? Or are you a West Coaster?
Edgar Gonzalez in for Doug Davis, who gives up five runs on six hits with five walks and two home runs in just four innings. His ERA’s up a good run from when he entered the game…

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:03 pm
  • well, we knocked that pitcher out quickly

    Max June 8, 2007, 11:03 pm
  • Lowell flies out to deep left and Tek Ks looking. Crisp up.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:05 pm
  • I have to say, the snake shaped like a “D” is far better than the terribly dated mid-90s “A” for the Diamondbacks…

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:06 pm
  • Crisp in on the hit parade, so Beckett’s up with a chance to improve on his team-baest career slugging percentage ;-).

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:07 pm
  • No luck. Beckett’s slugging percentage now down to .600 while a member of the Red Sox. Batting average just .300, but only 2 Ks in 10 AB. He could fill in for Wily Mo in a pinch….

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:11 pm
  • Scott Hairston realllly wants to see Josh Beckett pitch a complete game. Flies out on the second pitch.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:13 pm
  • Alberto Callaspo takes a ball, then three straight strikes. No. 5 for Beckett.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:13 pm
  • i’m in california paul. i used to love late baseball when i lived back east. can’t sleep while the sox are playing.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 11:15 pm
  • Now Chris Snyder is rung up on the fourth pitch of the at bat. Two-K, 10-pitch fifth and Beckett is at 56 pitches, six strikeouts.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:15 pm
  • When I was little, I hated it. Always had to go to bed early, and the games would be too late to pore over the box scores like I usually did (we got USA Today, so it was those really detailed ones with the “How they scored” summaries back in the day).
It’s better now that I’m in Texas. One hour earlier. But still. The Sox used to suck on the West Coast, and I think some of that hangs over with me too.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:17 pm
  • Lugo only seems to be good for about one hit per game…

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:19 pm
  • Pedroia singles on a grounder to the pitcher. I assume it was one of those sneaky grounders hit just hard enough/soft enough to get past the mound and die in no-man’s land.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:21 pm
  • PAPI with the RBI double!
You knew that was going to end badly for Edgar Gonzalez. He threw two balls away, then tried to come inside to Papi’s wheelhouse three times.
    The first one Ortiz missed.
The second one he fouled off.
    The third one he doubled.
If you’re lucky enough to get Ortiz to miss twice on pitches inside, you don’t do it again.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:24 pm
  • pedroias ball looked like it was gonna role foul up the first base line and pitcher had to make a choice. manny just took a pitch off his hands up and in. it’s not pretty.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 11:25 pm
  • Now Gonzalez hits Ramirez on an 0-2 count. Another one in the “not smart” category. Though with Drew up, it’s not as bad as if, say, Youkilis was in the game…

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:26 pm
  • mannys ok. please be the NL drew.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 11:27 pm
  • BOOM!!

    Scott SF June 8, 2007, 11:27 pm
  • drew homers. i might be right about this NL thing. 9 – 1 sox.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 11:28 pm
  • DREW!!!!!!!!
    ANOTHER THREE-RUN HOMER!
    He’s back, ladies and gentlemen!!

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:28 pm
  • You might at that, Rod.
My hope is that Drew solves his problems by feasting on the weaker (and more familiar) league, then carries that confidence and momentum through to the rest of the season.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:30 pm
  • I hope you’re right Paul.

    Max June 8, 2007, 11:32 pm
  • With the laugher in effect, Youkilis now in the game, replacing Ortiz at first. Good move by Francona. Also means Youk willl have fewer chances to extend his 29-game on-base streak.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:33 pm
  • An eight-pitch inning for Beckett. Ten straight retired, 64 pitches through six. Yeah, he might be OK…

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:37 pm
  • The numbers do include this year’s series against Atlanta, but Drew’s interleague splits are below his career norms, which would seem to indicate he struggled at least a little against AL pitching in the past.
Of course, if Drew were hitting .263/.351/.453 right now. we’d be thrilled. Or at least satisfied.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:41 pm
  • i had forgotten that a bunch of yf’s had compared the “mine” play to the hidden ball trick. geez. i hope that play doesn’t make sportscenter.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 11:41 pm
  • I bet it will. In this case though, what did Lugo do other then stand there with the ball? That couldn’t even be properly considered “gamesmanship.” It’s just being alert to the realities on the field. That’s not even close to the line…

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:45 pm
  • Oop. Leadoff double for Hudson.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:46 pm
  • Groundout, Hudson moves to third. Comfortable lead notwithstanding, it’d be cool to see Josh escape this with no damage.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:47 pm
  • GameDay’s hung up at “In play, run(s)”… What’s going on?

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:51 pm
  • it was a ground ball back to beckett. he ran the runner back to third. flipped to lowell, lowell chased the runner home. flipped to tek. tek dropped it.

    sf rod June 8, 2007, 11:58 pm
  • ESPN’s hung up at the same place. Weeeird.

    Paul SF June 8, 2007, 11:59 pm
  • Ahhh. Explains. They’re probably all freaking out figuring out how to score it. Fielder’s choice, E-2, unearned run, I assume?

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:00 am
  • drew doubles home henski. i like this, but i don’t like this. 7 rbi tonite. i hope you’re right paul.

    sf rod June 9, 2007, 12:01 am
  • yea its e2 un earned and Drew doubles in another run 10-1

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:02 am
  • 10-2*

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:02 am
  • and the fans are chanting “YANKEES SUCK”

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:02 am
  • yeah i figure it’s gotta be an e on tek.

    sf rod June 9, 2007, 12:03 am
  • This is sibling rivalry at it’s best. JD says “this is how you do it little bro”… Goddamn Sox, I was hoping for another game in the standings.

    bloodyank78 June 9, 2007, 12:04 am
  • Wow GameDay still says, “In play, run(s)” on the Stepehn Drew hit… That play really screwed em up…
    Hey there we go!

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:06 am
  • To be fair to Drew, he was quoted in the Herald today saying he felt a lot better about his hitting and thought he was due to snap out of the slump… So I will cling to my hope that this is not simply an NL-fueled aberration (as all of last year’s 12-game winning streak turned out to be)…

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:08 am
  • I view that as sign of respect TJ. When the f**k was the last time you heard Nationals Suck?

    bloodyank78 June 9, 2007, 12:08 am
  • you gotta be excited about the rocket relaunch tomorrow by78. i know i am.

    sf rod June 9, 2007, 12:08 am
  • Although I agree with the crowd’s sentiments, I think it’s time to retire the “YANKEES SUCK” chant.
In addition to being low-class, it just shows Yankee fans that Sox fans are obsessed with the Yankees. I think a far better approach is to treat the Yankees lke any other team. Being able to condescend to my Yankee fan brother-in-law is much more satisfying.

    Ayuh - SF June 9, 2007, 12:09 am
  • True dat, Ayuh. I used to love the “Yankees suck” chant. But I was 13 at the time. It’s time for it to go.

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:10 am
  • Random props to Theo: Eric Hinske was a good acquisition last year.

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:11 am
  • (Still catching up on GameDay, now in the JD Drew at-bat)…

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:12 am
  • I could use a CG for my fantasy league :) Keep Beckett in

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:14 am
  • I have been out and about watching the game on my cell.
Last I saw it was Pedroia at the plate in the top of the eigth. What the heck is going on? Its been frozen there forever.
Also… Nice to see Drew waking up, Beckett continueing his mastery.. and Lugo’s freaking crazy trick to get a baserunner out! (ESPN showed me that!)

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:14 am
  • Never mind. Gameday just righted itself

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:14 am
  • Ugh. Longball off Beckett. 10-3 good guys. No more runs Beckett… Need to keep that QS

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:15 am
  • all you’ve missed is a pinch hit home run from some kid named montero. beckett was pissed about it. he’s through the eigth at 96 pitches. will most likely come out for the ninth as no one is warming.

    sf rod June 9, 2007, 12:17 am
  • K ends the inning. Beckett looks sharp. Wish he’d only given up 2 runs.. but thats being awfully picky. He certainly lhas looked better against the pretty good D-back than Pettite did against teh awful Pirates

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:17 am
  • Niiiice. After a rough and taxing couple series for the bullpen, the starters decide they’ll just do it all for a couple of games.
You have to love how some of the pieces here are really working together.

    Devine June 9, 2007, 12:18 am
  • He can still gve up another run and keep the QS. The run on the Tek error was unearned. Not that I want that to happen — I’m rooting for him to lower his ERA.
Im also rooting for Youk to get one more chance here in the ninth for a 30-game streak.

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:19 am
  • Glad Beckett was pissed rod. He’s been the pewrfect blend of fire on ice this year. He’s gotten pissed when he needs to, but not let the anger take over him like last year. Instead he calms down and lets the icewater flow.

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:19 am
  • Crap. Belli in to pinch hit for Beckett. Who’s warming, TV watchers?

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:21 am
  • i guess he is comming out as beli pinch hits. no idea whos comming in for the ninth.

    sf rod June 9, 2007, 12:21 am
  • Beckett’s definitely been a revelation this year.
Do you think you count him out for about 2-3 more starts this year or is your guess the finger was a one-time deal?
Don’t get me wrong, the value he’s giving while healthy is incredible. And for the record, I think he’ll probably be okay the rest of the year health/finger-wise.

    Devine June 9, 2007, 12:22 am
  • 30-game strewak, Paul?
Oh gettign on base. Duh. WOW.. 30 games? I love him.
Also, do you think a 3-5, 2 homers, 7 RBI night will break Drew out of his slump? Cause.. if it does… dear go are we gonna be lethal at the plate.
Mirabelli? WHY? I wanted the CG! Dammit.. you suck Terry!
Still.. we had a CG last night. Don’t want the bullpen getting cold I guess… *cough* bullshit *cough*

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:22 am
  • radio guys said Piniero

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:22 am
  • joel in.

    sf rod June 9, 2007, 12:23 am
  • He was at 29, Dio, but that streak ended with the 0 for 1. Sucks for him. Still, 30-game on-base streaks aren’t terribly rare. Manny’s had one at least that long in each of the last two seasons, and no on’s coming close to Wade Boggs’ team record of 57…

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:25 am
  • chance to bring that era back into the 4′s. nice play for lugo on out number one of the ninth.

    sf rod June 9, 2007, 12:25 am
  • Perfect situation for Pineiro. Put him in for a few batters, get it over to Papelbon for the save ;-)

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:26 am
  • Nice run for Drew there on that catch. Good night for the dude.

    Devine June 9, 2007, 12:27 am
  • Game. Go Beckett, go Drew.

    Devine June 9, 2007, 12:28 am
  • joel is doing this crazy elbow jerk thing. he’s noticably trying to keep his front shoulder closed, and reminding himself to do so after each pitch. i guess this is a practice session for him. ballgame. hopefully a new leaf for the sox.

    sf rod June 9, 2007, 12:28 am
  • As i am actually online for a change.. is time for Dionysus’ PawSox UpDate!
JAcoby “More Popular Than Crisp” Ellsbury went 2-4 with a triple and a walk. He scored twice.
Brandon “We should get some more bullpen help for him” Moss went 3-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs
David Pauley threw 6 innigns giving up three runs.. on a whopping 10 hits.
Manny Delcarmen threw two full innings giving up only one hit and a walk.
    PawSox win 7-3!
    Also, BoSox win 10-3!

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:28 am
  • Ballgame. Great win for the Sox. Offense looks to be back on track, and another ace performance from Josh “9-0″ Beckett.

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:28 am
  • *slides YF another plate of Crow ala Beckett*

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:31 am
  • That was Cora at SS not Lugo
Also on a minors note Buchholz won 7-1 but only had 2 Ks ending his Portland franchise record of 9 consecutive games of striking out atleast 7 batters. the old record belonged to Josh Beckett from Portlands Marlins days.

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:32 am
  • Buchholz out pitched Jake Westbrook on a rehab assingment.

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:33 am
  • That’s a great tidbit, TJ.
Well, back to housework. Have a good night everybody!

    Paul SF June 9, 2007, 12:35 am
  • I was about to post on the SeaDogs TJ, but you beat me to it!
So.. I realyl hope that if we still ahve enough of a lead in September we can give Clay a few starts (I imagien he’ll be pitchign AAA the very moment Lester is called up). If he looks major league ready, I really think we MIGHT be able to forgoe resigning Curt. That should net us an extra 1st round draft pick, if I’m not mistaken and we get to bolster our famr system even more.
Ok.. I actually ahve NO clue how you decide what Free Agent moves give draft picks.

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:35 am
  • I think Bostons plan is to leave Clay at AA all season and call him up when Portlands season is over to get him a taste of the bigs leading into spring next year.

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:37 am
  • Curt would be a type A free agent. If Boston offered him arbitration they would get the 1st round pick of the team he signed with plus a compensation round pick as well (I could be wrong on the second pick)

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:40 am
  • yes, I was correct….
The number of players deemed Type A and B has been tweaked as well. Type A free agents, whose former team continues to receive a first- or second-round pick from the signing club as well as an extra pick between the first and second rounds, will be reduced from the 30 percent of players (as determined by a statistical formula) to 20; the Type B band is reduced from 31-50 percent to 21-40

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:42 am
  • Rod,
I’m gonna be golfing during Rocket’s return manana. I’ve been studying for the CA bar the past three weeks and it’s my first day off, I’m not going to think about baseball or the law; both frustrate me to no end. But in August, when the Halos play the Sox and the Yanks; let’s go to some games. I have tix to the the second Yank game and your name is on one of them if you want. I hate the Angels almost as much of the Sox. Your comments have never been anything but witty, entertaining, and relevant to this great rivalry. Give me an email and we’ll drink some beers and watch our teams.

    bloodyank78 June 9, 2007, 12:42 am
  • How do you determine free agent types, TJ? I mean.. Curts an Ace and of course he’s an A.. but whats the cutoff?
hmm.. it will be itnerestign to see if they leave him in AA or not once Lester opens a hole in the AAA rotation TJ.
I think Lester gets one more AAA start, and if it goes well (his pitch coutn will be 90-100), he’ll finally come back to us.

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:45 am
  • I dont like the compensation thing though its stupid a team loses a 1st round pick when signing a free agent…. Afterall its not really a free agent if u gotta pay a 1st round pick is it??? If a team loses a top player to free agency give them a sandwich pick fine but taking a teams 1st round pick is crazy.

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:45 am
  • Gah.. as I was typing my question gets answered.

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:46 am
  • By the way.. who do y’all think gets mvoed for TImlin?
I’t bettinb it’s Lopez, but I WANT it to be Pineiro.. or Timlin himself (I’m nto convinced he can still be effective at all)

    Dionysus June 9, 2007, 12:50 am
  • This was the old system theres no longer Type C. Theres A, B, Everyone else. Not sure if the percentages stayed the same with Type C now being everyone else.
There are three classes of free agents:
Type A: Top 30% of his position, as determined by Elias Sports Bureau rankings over the last two years.
Type B: Top 31-50% of his position.
Type C: Bottom 50% of his position.

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:50 am
  • I can see Boston waiving Piniero but most likely it will be Lopez.

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:51 am
  • actually the percentages thing I just asked in my last post was answered in something I posted earlier lol…

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:52 am
  • have I mentioned lately how much I hate this stupid security crap on posting here ugh!

    TJ June 9, 2007, 12:53 am
  • that is tremendously kind of you by. i will let you know asap. i’ve never seen the yanks in person, and i know we share the same philosophy on angel fan. we’ll talk.
