Cartography 101

via SoSH, we stumbled across the map below (click on the thumbnail to spawn a bigger version), showing what the map’s cartographer admits is an "incredibly inaccurate" recording of fan allegiance by geographic region.  The map raises a few interesting questions.  First, who would’ve thought that RSN would extend so deeply into upstate New York? (take that, Copernican Yankees fans!)  Second, based on the breakdown of the Big Apple and it’s surroundings, why do the New York tabloids even bother with the Mets?  Third, what town is that in Michigan that roots for the Brewers and what did the Tigers do to alienate them (beyond signing Magglio to that heinous contract)? Fourth, and most time-appropriately, where the f*ck are all the White Sox fans?!!?

  • What’s going on with RSN-West apparently dominating Utah and regions of rural Wyoming/Idaho/Nevada? Suspicious to say the least. I suppose it could be that Mormons have turned out to be the biggest bandwagoners on earth (which would be in tune with their other kooky social practices), but still, why do gun rack-toting Idahoans root for Bronson Arroyo? Is it the hair?

  • And what about the bizarro Cub-creep into southern Montana and Idaho and northeast Oklahoma? I have a feeling this dude’s sample size is so small that a vote for the Texas Rangers might swing the entire state of Florida. Count those hanging chads!

  • The Mets are the no.2 team for the entire northeast from my experience. In Ct. if they aren’t Yankee or Red Sox fans they are Mets fans, and throughout upstate NY they are Mets fans after the Yankee-Red Sox battle. Being second in the New York market still gives you a huge fan base.

  • I can categorically say growing up in Utah that they are HUGE bandwagoners. By the way I think that’s Ludington, Michigan which is directly across from Milwaukee on the lake. Don’t underestimate the power of WGN in Montana/Idaho.
