The Red Sox have signed Sean Casey as their backup first baseman, ending the Eric Hinske Era in Boston.
For $800,000, that’s not a bad deal at all. If he can replicate his 2007 numbers from the bench, he’ll be a solid contributor.
Farewell, Eric. We’ll never forget that catch down the right-field line.
enjoy the ring eric. welcome aboard sean. we finally filled the hole left by brian daubach.
Casey is said to have a personality which makes Millar and Cabby look morose by comparison. From Edes:
That catch was amazing, Paul. Hell the entire game was–if I recall correctly he hit the go-ahead homerun in the late innings. Sean Casey will be a great addition, although this makes me sad because it means we won’t be signing Trot. Oh well.
Casey’s pretty good with the glove too, no? Maybe we’ll get a A-level grab in the camera well at some point this season.
sean casey is called “the mayor” by a lot of his old teammates because of his outgoing, genuinely friendly ways. i must admit that i was jealous when i heard that the sox landed him. he’s easy to root for.
and he has more than 1 game of major league experience at 1B. which is nice.
solid pick up at a steal of a price.
.301 career AVG. Excellent addition. All of the offseason objectives are taken of. Next step….extend Tito.
good pickup for the sox…i like the guy from what i’ve seen of him…i’m a little surprised the yanks didn’t explore obtaining him, but i guess they had already gone in another direction [as in a circle when chasing one’s own tail], and made a different decision [as in first baseman by committee]…oh well
Casey would have been part of the first basemen by committee.
Next need: A backup IF with power from the right side. Too bad Hellbrand is such a douchebag. A guy like Batista could work.
Better the Sox than the Yanks. Plus, the Sox had room for a weak-hitting left-handed bat at 1B. Still, I’m surprised they didn’t give Chris Carter a chance to win that same role, but for 700k, it’s not like they have to hold onto Casey all year. If Carter produces for the PawSox, he’ll be up cause Casey will be lucky to OPS .750, and with Youkilis at 1B, it’s not like they need the glove.
The Yanks, by contrast, already have Betemit and Miranda. With Ensberg and Duncan, too, their 1B and bench is set and from both sides of the plate. I’m actually excited to see a manager who can juggle lineups and position players with a flexible roster.
