Charm City? Sox-O’s Sunday Gamer

A near brawl and an ugly loss over the past two days; it hasn’t been a lovely weekend in Baltimore thus far for the Sox, but they throw their ace this afternoon, Josh Beckett, who will try to erase memory of Dice’s meltdown last night and keep up with or surpass Chien-Ming Wang in the win department. He faces Jeremy Guthrie, who’s pitched well against the Sox this year (1.98 era in 2 starts) and has pitched well over the last month, though the O’s can’t seem to get him a victory for all the effort. Comment away on all the action right here.

  • Is Gameday malfunctioning for anyone else?

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 12:50 pm
  • That’s a decent lineup; I was fearing a dayful of second-stringers. Cora-Lugo is a toss-up, and we’re not seeing Hinske at 1st, etc.
Maybe the blow-out last night, which allowed Franon/m/a to give some of the guys a little rest, had a small upside for today.
Win #17 for Josh on tap…

  • Win #18, Hud…

  • It was malfunctioning for me for all the games–I was trying to see the beginning of the Tigers game, and it was giving me some wierd error. It’s fine now though.

  • Youk singles after fouling off a few pitches. Varitek up, Crisp on deck.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 2:03 pm
  • Holy shit, the score of the Mariners-Tigers game is 6-5… in the 2nd inning.

Wait, when did the Sox trade Dice to the Mariners or Tigers?

  • I know this is against all that I believe in, but can you guys please put up some crooked numbers on Guthrie ASAP? I am up 5 points in my fantasy semifinals, he has Guthrie and Oswalt (losing 2-0) and I have King Felix. So please, please Sox, help out a Yankee fan!

    John - YF (Trisk) September 9, 2007, 2:08 pm
  • Not funny, SF. Not funny.
There are a lot of runs being scored early today… Phillies have 5 runs after two innings, and the Beermakers have 7 after three.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 2:09 pm
  • > can you guys please put up some crooked numbers on Guthrie ASAP

  • Pedroia and Ortiz both with 2-out hits, Papi’s a double. Lowell up with two RISP.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 2:31 pm
  • Lowell singles! Papi and Pedroia both score. Lowell advances to 2nd. 2-0 Sox.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 2:32 pm
  • Holy shit, Seattle is now up 10-5 in the 3rd inning. Both teams have scored in every inning so far.
Oh, and Youk K’s to end the inning. Beckett back out there with a lead now.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 2:35 pm
  • Beckett strikes out the side in the 3rd.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 2:48 pm
  • Varitek with a single! Keep it going, Coco.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 2:52 pm
  • Top of the 6th, Guthrie over 100 pitches, Beckett at 84… So in theory we might get one more inning out of our (solid) starter than theirs.
Youks leads off with a walk, nicely building Guthrie’s pitch count… Knock him out, fellas.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:31 pm
  • Youks steals 2nd, whaddya know…

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:33 pm
  • That one is on Hernandez, apparently, pretty easy to steal on and he didn’t even throw.
Orioles have an injury delay, checking Guthrie.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:34 pm
  • Guthrie coming out.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:34 pm
  • how’d he get hurt?

    rootbeerfloat September 9, 2007, 3:36 pm
  • Taking a look at stats during the pitching change… Very decent line for Beckett so far, six scattered hits, no walks and six Ks on the day (so far), with only the Mora solo shot spoiling things a little.
(The WRKO guys were, of course, talking about how Mora had lost power this year and hadn’t hit a home run in ages… Right before he smacked that one out. I’m not superstitious, but with sportscasters that never fails.)

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:37 pm
  • RBF, not clear, must have overextended somehow on a pitch. He was at a high pitch count, anyway. RKO made the good point that the Sox should like to see him stay healthy, since the Birds have six games left against the Yankees.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:38 pm
  • Walker pitching, Youks on 2nd, Tek batting. Sox really ought to be able to manufacture a run here.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:38 pm
  • (With no outs, that is.)
    Now Tek walks.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:39 pm
  • (With no outs, that is.)
    Now Tek walks.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:40 pm
  • Coco bunts, but Walker gets Youks at 3rd. Bleh.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:41 pm
  • Oops, sorry, that was Hernandez with the throw.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:41 pm
  • Cora pops out unproductively to center, now two out with runners still stuck at 1st and 2nd.
And then Ellsbury grounds out, first pitch swinging.
Not good in such a close game. Runner and second, no one home, a playoff contender should be able to get that done… against such a weak team, no less.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:44 pm
  • Crisp-Cora-Ellsbury are a collective 1 for 10 with no walks today.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:45 pm
  • Damn score is tied at 2. Markakis with the solo shot.

    Rob September 9, 2007, 3:46 pm
  • Markakis ties it up with the second solo shot off Beckett. Feh. Lots of squanders today.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 3:47 pm
  • Sheesh, I hate it when a Sox pitcher on a day he might not have his BEST stuff still holds the opposition down and the offense makes the the other pitchers look like Cy young candidates

    Brian September 9, 2007, 3:51 pm
  • Papi pops out on the 1st pitch.

    Rob September 9, 2007, 3:55 pm

  • Lowell GIDP. Will Beckett be out for the 7th? He’s still under 100 pitches, and has only made 2 mistakes so far.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 4:04 pm
  • Beckett beans Ramon Hernandez on the first pitch. Retaliation for the other night’s “Vacuum” incident?

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 4:05 pm
  • Beckett trying to close out the 7th to stay in line for a win if the Sox can score in the top of the 8th… But Roberts is fouling off pitch after pitch (six fouls in a row).

    Anonymous September 9, 2007, 4:16 pm
  • And Josh finally gets the K. Nice. Now the rest of the team has to go out and win this for him.
When a Sox starter holds the opponent to 2 runs in 7 innings, Boston should get the W…

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 4:17 pm

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 4:25 pm
  • Drew steals 2nd! This backup catcher the O’s put in must have no arm. Is he related to the other 3 Molina brothers?

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 4:26 pm
  • Still Tek… … Ball 1… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … Ball 2… … … … … … … 2-2 count… … … … … … Long fly out, JD to third on the tag, but two out… Again the Sox may squander a man in scoring position with 0/1 out?

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 4:27 pm
  • Varitek flies out, but Drew tags up. Beckett’s go-ahead run is 90 feet away.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 4:28 pm
  • Coco drives in Drew!

    Rob September 9, 2007, 4:29 pm

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 4:29 pm
  • YES! GOD BLESS COCO!

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 4:30 pm
  • Bradford coming out. Cora set to bat, possibility of a Lugo PH depending on the matchup.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 4:30 pm
  • It’s too bad the Sox don’t have a ringer pinch hitter to go to in these situations.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 4:31 pm
  • What do you mean by “ringer” pinch-hitter? Not sure I’ve heard that before.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 4:32 pm
  • If Crisp gets in scoring position, don’t count out Lugo, he’s been pretty consistent with two outs and RISP

    Brian September 9, 2007, 4:33 pm
  • Oh jesus christ, Liza Minelli is singing God Bless America at the US Open. This is why I hate New Yorkers. Someone shoot me.

    Atheose September 9, 2007, 5:00 pm

    Rob September 9, 2007, 5:00 pm

    Paul SF September 9, 2007, 5:00 pm

    Beckett: 18-6.
    Lead stays at least 5.5.
Yankees up 6-3 in the 9th.
(Don’t look now: Scott Kazmir tomorrow.)

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 5:01 pm
  • Save #35 for Paps, fwiw; hold #27 for Oki.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 5:01 pm
  • Thank God for Jonathan Papelbon. How nice is it having a lock in the bullpen to sew up the 9th

    Brian September 9, 2007, 5:01 pm
  • Yanks-KC just went final.

    Hudson September 9, 2007, 5:02 pm
  • Beckett gets the win ahead of Wang.

    Rob September 9, 2007, 5:02 pm
  • As for the ringer pinch hitter mentioned by Hudson earlier.
His name is Jacoby Ellsbury once Manny returns.
Jacoby has a hit in ever game he’s played in since Sept 1. Two of those hits came in PH appearances. He’s got talent and speed. He’s your Pinch Hitter.. unless we can get him to start for Drew

    Dionysus September 9, 2007, 5:05 pm
  • Beckett gets a slightly better line than Wang for their 18th wins. Same number of innings, but Josh gives up one less run.

    Dionysus September 9, 2007, 5:06 pm
  • I really have an issue with Holds. A player liek Oki wont get a save in that situation because Paps will be in in the 9th – so the most he cn get is a widely ignored “Hold”.. and yet he’ll get a Blown SAVE if he gives up a run
    Bullshit.

    Dionysus September 9, 2007, 5:07 pm
  • Dion comment #1: Interesting thought, Ellsbury as the ringer PH… My guess is that Francona will “show faith” in Drew through the postseason and go with the conventional wisdom that “seasoned veterans” can handle the playoffs better. Sigh.
Dion comment #2: Maybe it should be a Blown Hold? (But that sounds R-rated.)

    Anonymous September 9, 2007, 5:16 pm
  • Saves in general are a broken statistic. Remember a Ranger got a Save in that 30-3 massacre. Clearly broken.

    Dionysus September 9, 2007, 5:19 pm
  • So do we want the Tigers to win so they keep an outside chance of knocking the Yankees out of the playoffs, or do we want them to lose to reduce the Red Sox magic number for clinching a playoff berth?

    Ron Newman September 9, 2007, 8:31 pm
  • John Kruk on BBTN: Chien-Ming Wang should win th Cy Young. Why? Well, he has 18 wins. Duh!
Even Orel Hersheiser said very little in choosing Beckett about JB’s superior combo of Ks/BBs/runs per game.
Disappointing. Then they all got into a fight over how your CY pitcher should have a lot of wins. Frustrating.

    Paul SF September 9, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Boston’s wild card magic number is 10. We may, in a week or so, see whether the Sox prefer to rest people or go after the AL East crown full-bore (of course, I’d like to see the Yankees lose two or three times to the Sox this weekend and make it a bit more moot).
