Chasing: Sox-Jays Gamer

If the season ended today…the season would end today.  The Sox are no longer a playoff team, at least not at the moment. Tonight they try to claw their way back up the standings. On the road. So don't expect much.

Discuss what is likely to be excruciatingly boring baseball here.

(can you tell we're sour on our decrepit squad?)

  • No Pedroia, as he’s back in Boston with his pregnant wife. At least we’ve got Josh Beckett on the mound.

  • I’ve missed that bearded beast.

  • OK, I’m talking to myself in here, but Go Papi!

  • But I do hate to see the Large Father going into home with a hand tag. He’s not exactly nimble.

  • Romero ain’t cuttin’ it.

  • Cripes, you give Beckett a 4 run lead and you expect to relax.

  • Back home from a trip to go to the Iowa State Fair.

The lead grows, the lead shrinks. the lead grows, the lead shrinks, the lead grows, the lead shrinks. We can’t stand prosperity.

  • They must have had some crazy stuff at that fair to get you speaking like that.

  • IBM
    Iowa State Fair. Really?
I’m from Cedar Rapids. Where are you from?

  • Lived in Mechanicsville in the 70s. Grew up in Des Moines. Went to Cornell. Escaped, I mean, moved out of Iowa in 1999.
This year’s talker at the fair was chocolate-covered bacon. Only in Iowa.

Andrew, this is why we’re cooked. Nothing is going right.

  • Oki on to pitch the 7th.

  • I went in other direction. Raised on Long Island, moved here in 1989.

  • Whaaaaaaaaaaa? A sac bunt w/ Ortiz the lead runner on 2nd?

    I'mBillMcNeal August 18, 2009, 9:37 pm
  • We live in the Chicago burbs now, poochie.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 18, 2009, 9:38 pm
  • 10-7 in the 8th.
    Teases.

  • Nice, the Sox get Beckett 10 runs of support and it is barely enough at this point.

    SF August 18, 2009, 9:45 pm
  • JFC.

  • Jesus H. Fuck. 10-9 bases loaded. Pap has been not good.

    Devine August 18, 2009, 10:06 pm
  • Paps is coming unglued.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 18, 2009, 10:06 pm
  • Paps has thrown 12 pitches, 3 for strikes.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 18, 2009, 10:07 pm
  • Makes one appreciate Mo even more

    iiicollies August 18, 2009, 10:08 pm
  • Whew. Lotta pitches for Pap, hope he has it in the 9th (he didn’t there, that’s for sure).

    Devine August 18, 2009, 10:08 pm
  • He seemed to have some velocity issues.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 18, 2009, 10:10 pm
  • Minnesota has tied it against Texas. One-run lead in Toronto. Hoo boy.

    Devine August 18, 2009, 10:22 pm
  • One on, one down.

    Devine August 18, 2009, 10:26 pm
  • 24 pitches to get 2 outs for Paps.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 18, 2009, 10:30 pm
  • Winning run on with 2 down. Gar.

    Devine August 18, 2009, 10:35 pm
  • Pap barely got away with it. The Red Sox barely got away with it.
But they got away with it.

    Devine August 18, 2009, 10:36 pm
  • Have been reading Montville’s bio on Teddy, the chapter on what a bunch of drunks players were in the late 40s and 50s. Maybe Paps is drunk.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 18, 2009, 10:37 pm
  • IBM, trust me, the majority of them are still drunks.
Ugly win, but it’s a win. We also used their entire BP, so I like our chances in this series.

    LocklandSF August 18, 2009, 10:42 pm
  • Had to sweat that one out too much.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 18, 2009, 10:49 pm
  • Whew! That was painful, but at least it’s over.

    rootbeerfloat August 18, 2009, 10:56 pm
  • Sounded like a roller-coaster ride in Toronto. Beckett’s Cy Young chances took a bit of a hit with tonight’s stat line. And poor Bucholz seems to draw nothing but aces for opposing pitchers.
Also of possible (marginal) interest to SF’s: Smoltz to join the Cards.
