Colon Check: Sox-O’s Gamer V

Because colon jokes never get old.

In all seriousness, Colon looked fantastic in outdueling Felix Hernandez last week and if that’s any kind of portent, he could provide a big boost to a rotation that lost first Clay Buchholz (now healthy and trying to regain his no-hitter form in Pawtucket) then Daisuke Matsuzaka. He faces Brian Burres, who was plastered by the Yankees his last time out but who otherwise has been having a decent season.

In other storylines, Jacoby Ellsbury tries to become the first ballplayer ever to steal three bases in a game three consecutive times, and the Red Sox bullpen tries to continue its improbable (but most welcome) run of 11 straight scoreless innings.

If anyone’s out there, comment away!

  • X-rays were negative but he’s going home to Boston for an MRI.

  • Runners on the corners with nobody out in the third … and Manny drives in Pedroia with a double. 2-1 Sox.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 2:25 pm
  • Sac fly by Mike Lowell drives in Youk. 3-1.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 2:27 pm
  • And J.D. Drew drives in Manny with a two-out-single. Nine hits by the Sox already. 4-1.

  • Inning still going … Jeff Bailey walks. Burres at 72 pitches.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 2:34 pm
  • Lugo pops out. Would have been a good time for an extra-base it to break it open.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 2:36 pm
  • Extra-base hit, I mean.

  • Extra-base hit I mean.

  • Easy 1-2-3 inning for Bartolo. (Yes, we’re on a first-name basis already.)

  • Damon Woo, who caught Manny’s 500th, will return the ball to Manny.

“I’m so happy to have the ball,” Ramirez said.
“It’s his accomplishment,” said Woo, who lives in Manhatten but grew up in Massachusetts. “It’s his ball. It’s the right thing to do. They can call me crazy.”

    Woo, you’re crazy. And awesome.

  • 501! 6-1 Sox.

    SF June 1, 2008, 2:51 pm
  • 501 drives in Youk. 6-1.

  • B2B, Lowell hits one out. 7-1.

So Remy is (crassly?) selling copies of his scorecard from last night’s game for $17.95, while the fan is returning the actual ball for nothing.

    SF June 1, 2008, 2:56 pm
  • Stinky Colon gives two runs right back on a Luke Scott dinger. Colon hasn’t looked great to me today, that’s about the fourth rocket he’s allowed.

    SF June 1, 2008, 2:58 pm
  • And now an infield hit, Payton on first with nobody out. I have a feeling it’s going to take 10 or 11 runs to get a win today, not the seven on the board.

    SF June 1, 2008, 3:00 pm
  • Yeah, it’s back to just Colon for me now. No more of that Bartolo stuff.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 3:00 pm
  • There’s nothing funny about an “overextended Bartolo”, right? Why ever use the first name?!

    SF June 1, 2008, 3:02 pm
  • > So Remy is (crassly?) selling copies of his scorecard from last night’s game for $17.95
Strange. What is the “value add” that makes a Xerox of Remy’s card worth $17.95? Maybe he is donating the overage on the paper/labor/postage costs to some charity. Then, I can see it. Otherwise, yeah, it’s opportunistic.

  • 7-3 after four. Colon at 59 pitches.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 3:07 pm
  • Then again, $18 is not a lot of money to spend for a snapshot of history should that snapshot be especially important to oneself.

    attackgerbil June 1, 2008, 3:07 pm
  • Just saw a replay of 501. That’s not a pitch one should be able to hit out of the park.

    attackgerbil June 1, 2008, 3:11 pm
  • Jacoby steals his 7th base of the series … but DPod flies out to end the inning.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 3:21 pm
  • Colon allows his first walk in the 5th, but otherwise gets through the inning easily. Still 7-3.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 3:32 pm
  • Sox go down 1-2-3 in their half of the 6th.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 3:35 pm
  • phenomenal diving stab and throw by Pedroia. Awesome.

    SF June 1, 2008, 3:42 pm
  • Colon allows a two-out-single to Adam Jones, but strikes out Quiroz. 96 pitches now. Lopez in the 7th?

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 3:46 pm
  • Dinger J.D. Drew. 8-3.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 3:51 pm
  • Jacoby drives in Coco who pinch-ran for Jeff Bailey who had reached on his third walk of the day. 9-3. Dustin pops out. Inning over.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 3:59 pm
  • I think you let Colon go until he gives up a baserunner for the 7th. With a 6 run lead and an exhausted bullpen, give them the rest if they can get it.

    Dionysus June 1, 2008, 4:00 pm
  • Colon back out for the 7th surprisingly.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:02 pm
  • And promptly hits Freddie Bynum.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:03 pm
  • And then walks Brian Roberts on 4 pitches. That’ll do it. Mills should have gone with Lopez right away. Or, as Dio suggested, taken him out after the HPB.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:06 pm
  • HBP, of course.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:06 pm
  • Millar drives in Bynum. Good thing Lugo and Pedroia turned the great DP before that. 9-4.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:12 pm
  • White Sox and Rays go to extra innings. With the Rays about to come into Boston I would not mind them playing 18.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:14 pm
  • Manny gets double off first after Payton catches a long drive by Lowell.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:20 pm
  • Hansen gets through the 8th on 8 pitches.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:27 pm
  • Rays win on another walk-off home run in the 10th. This has got to stop.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:28 pm
  • Objectively speaking the Rays actually are quite exciting. Pity the people in Tampa don’t seem to show their appreciation by going to see them.

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:31 pm
  • MDC gets the final three outs, helped by another great play by Pedroia. Is this the end of our road woes or is it just Fenway South?

pale blue eyes June 1, 2008, 4:41 pm
  • Yankees lose 5-1 to the Twins. Toronto leading 3-2 in the top of the 5th in Anaheim.
Things to do: sweep Baltimore on Monday and then take away first place from the Rays on the upcoming homestand. Bye for now.

  • After pointing out that Ellsbury wasn’t stealing enough bases, and getting roundly criticized for at least ten hours, I’d like to point out that he’s now on pace for 80 SB’s (9 CS) when then he was on pace for 60 SB’s (0 CS). And yet, he’s still not stealing enough. He could have at least 100 if the team lets him. :)

    A YF June 1, 2008, 9:31 pm
  • By the way, unless he gets hurt, my guess is Ellsbury will wind up in the 90-100 range (at a 90% rate). He’s simply too fast to hold back on the off-chance there might be a hit. The Sox appear to be slowly waking up to this fact with his running the last few games (8 SB in last four games).

    A YF June 1, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • One more note in the “A YF gets another notch” Department:
    Ellsbury – SB by month:
    April – 10 (60 SB pace)
May – 18 (108 SB pace) – ties team record for a month*
*Year = 54 SB by Tommy Harper in 1973

  • Hahahaha! If I remember correctly, you spent a good deal of researching the “fact” that Ellsbury couldn’t possible steal any more bases. Nice work! :)
