Cover Duty

EB_MLB09_PS3_Cover

To all you baseball gamers, there's a MVP (most valuable pipsqueak!) in your future.

Question: will the cover art keep diehard "The Show" fan and YFSF blogger John from buying the game at all?

(h/t Boston Globe)

UPDATE: Commenter Rob asks if there is a "Madden Curse" equivalent for this game.  There is.  It's after the jump.  And it's awesome.

  • Is there an equivalent of a Madden curse for this game?

    Rob January 8, 2009, 5:30 pm
  • No, there isn’t.
I was rooting for Jamie Moyer. What, kids won’t buy a video game with Jamie Moyer on it? (Answer: No.)

  • This game, well, the 08 version anyhow, is the digital version of crack. My advice is to not play it until you get fired.

  • NHL09 is my current addiction, having returned to video games after a 5 year absence.

  • I had the PS2 version, and I’m seriously considering getting a PS3 literally just for this game. My god.
Is the loading time better? That was my one complain..

  • 20$ is totally not the true cost of this game. You’ll have to factor in the hours not sleeping, families and friends wondering where you disappeared to, your possible significant others getting pissed at you.. etc.

  • Nice. Yeah, soo, any ways….
Wasn’t Jeter on one of these covers the same year he dislocated his shoulder?
Hmmm, and 07 seemed to have a nice curse associated with it:

Hopefully we get the odd year version!

  • Lar, are you asking about loading time for NHL? Not knowing how slow the old version was, I can only say that the load is slow at the start, but once you are in the game there are no issues. New games start in perhaps 20 seconds? There’s a “Be a Pro” mode which is completely addictive. It’s amazing.

  • Maybe I’ll look into NHL 09 on your recommendation – I’m a sucker for these sports RPGs. If only the Madden 09 Superstar doesn’t completely suck.
I have a 360 and a PS2. The loading time on the PS2 for The Show 08 is awful, but I still played many seasons of it. The only thing that finally ended my addiction was the corruption of my save file. Lame, but at least I got my life back at that point!
NHL 09 for Xbox should be reasonably fast though – you can install games to the HD and loading time is pretty quick for that..

  • Fair enough. And I guess 2K ’08 had Jose Reyes and his off-year attached. I still think the whole “[ ] Curse” kinda underestimates the reason why it happens.
Having a good season: not easy, but a common happening.
Getting on video game for having good season: yeah, that happens.
Having second good season in a row: difficult.
    The middle event is unrelated.
Also, MLB 2K8 had awesome ideas, but ultimately sucked. Anyone want a not-very-used XBox 360?

  • MLB 2K8 is awful. Haha. I don’t see them catching up to the Show in at least a few years. EA Sports needs to buy Take 2 or something.
The “curse” makes sense though – people go on the covers after they had a career year, so it’s usually just regression to the mean. Hard to say Ped peaked as a soph, but it was a pretty damn good year..

  • So we’re all above making the obvious life-size picture quip? Well, good for us. It took 1 comment on the BTF thread.
May I ask what’s so good about this game? The last great sports video game I played was Super Tecmo Bowl on Super Nintendo. Are you guys saying it’s gotten better since?

  • For the record, I liked baseball games as a kid, but not in recent years – pitching is boring against the computer because it’s all random, hitting is like rolling the dice half the time.
That said, I played The Show for its “Road to the Show” mode, which is basically an RPG with a baseball face.
The key thing that did it for me is that you basically skip everything your player is not involved in – for batting, you only bat (and run on the base paths). It’s not perfect, but it’s damn addictive. And presumably the 2009 version will only get better.
And as with RPG’s, you “grow” with your character as you “level” up the skill levels and seeing results. Frustrated during the cold streaks, and delightful during the hot streaks…
    But ya..

  • “Road To The Show” sounds rad, though I’m a little tired of people shittalking MLB 2k8. I got a Wii just for the Wii Fit so I wouldn’t get fat but ended up getting addicted to MLB 2k8. The graphics don’t seem as good as The Show, but they still have all the details down…i.e. players look and act pretty similar to their real life counterparts, i.e.i.e. Youkilis’ bunny fru fru batting stance, Jeter’s butt ejection on inside pitches, etc.
As for the actual game play, it’s pretty in depth, including minor league players, trades, though the defense controls have always been jerky and keep my team’s defense a little too true to life (Yankees).
I guess what I’m asking here is, since the Wii is never going to have the greatest graphics, is The Show still much better than MLB2K8? and how so?

  • I’m STILL bitter about the end of baseball gaming on the PC (MVP 05 was so good, dammit), and I have both a Wii and a 360 in my house but no PS3. I’d really like to get The Show, but it’s not worth getting a PS3 just for that (though I may get one anyway if the price drops soon). Still, it drives me nuts that the only really good baseball game that exists these days is on the one platform I don’t have.

  • I too was a huge fan of MVP Baseball on the PC (which ended because 2K Sports got the exclusive third party license). MVP 05 combined the fun with good sims. I haven’t done this for the last year, but I know some very hardcore fans have made patches/mods with 06/07 rosters. I remember playing with CMW and in fact, they use higher res in-game pictures, which was kind of amazing to me.
But ya, as someone who owns a Wii, 360, and PS2, I’m rather upset about it coming out for PS3. For the record, it is also coming out for PS2, so if you have that, you can pick up the 08 version for 20$ and test how much you like it. I actually had not played with my PS2 for 3 years (or so) until my friend insisted that I pick it up and try it, and now I’m sold. As far as I know, there are differences that you can expect between PS2/PS3 (graphics, commentary, etc) but gameplay is mostly the same.
J – I own MLB 2K8 for 360, and without going into too much detail about the differences and analysis on why it’s better, my only comment is that it’s just more addictive and more fun. The “Road to the Show” mode is one huge thing for me too. Graphics is going to be on par for either game, so ya.

  • MVP baseball sucked ass, way to easy to hit Home Runs, when you have 200 HRs in less tha n100 games, even on hardest difficulty, somethign is fucked up.
MLB 2K baseball games are shit. No redeeming qualities in any of them. Too many glitches, awful commentary, bad gameplay, bad everything.
MLB The Show games are hands down the best baseball games, they are simulation, not arcade shit like MVP.

  • MLB 2K 8 is one of the worst baseball games, I had more fun with RBI baseball 1,2,3 on NES
