Anxiety. Panic. Relief. Sadness. That’s been my range of emotions on this nasty afternoon. At about 3:00 I heard the news: a plane had crashed into the 20th floor of an apartment building on East 72nd Street, near the East River. My parents live on the 19th floor of an apartment building on East 72nd Street, near the East River. Their phone was ringing with no answer. No action on the cell phones. For twenty minutes I frantically searched the net for a photo. Their building? Thank god it wasn’t. They are safe. Relief. (The crash was on the next block.)
Tragically, a member of the Yankee family was on the plane: Cory Lidle. He had almost certainly earned banishment from the Bronx for a few intemperate comments last week. But this news is shocking, and truly awful. Our condolences go to his family, friends, teammates, and fans.
A bad day.
