Deja Vu: Yanks-ChiSox Gamer III

The Yanks shoulda won the first game in this series, and almost blew what should have been a laugher last night. This evening, the Bombers face their erstwhile teammate Javier Vazquez, dispensed so many moons ago in the deal that brought the Big Disappointment Unit. Thanks to the D-Rays and Royals, who caused all kinds of problems for the Yankees last year, and are making life tough for the Sox in this campaign, our boys now find themselves three games up over the hated rivals from Beantown. We hope that leads is extended tonight, as Mike Mussina goes for his 14th win—again. Would be nice to get him the W. Comment on all the action right here….

  • From Yahoo:

“Pitching for Class A Tampa against the Daytona Cubs, Pavano allowed three runs, five hits, one intentional walk, striking out one. The right-hander has not pitched in the major leagues since June 27, 2005.”
“It’s a step in the right direction”, Pavano said.

This was in 2 and 2/3 innings. I suppose he meant pitching instead of not pitching when talking about right directions, but I hope he tells me which direction he stepped, because I don’t think I want to step in it.

  • Baseball! And it starts with a Damon double and an error on Cintron for Jeets. Who gets credit for the single.

    YF August 10, 2006, 9:33 pm
  • Damon falls behind 0-2, then gets a double. Jeter reaches on E-6 to make it 1st and 2nd to Abreu.

    attackgerbil August 10, 2006, 9:33 pm
  • He got the single? Wow. That was definitely an error. The scorer must owe Cintron a favor.

    attackgerbil August 10, 2006, 9:34 pm
  • Abreu pops out to the track in left, advancing both runners. I love these first three batters.

    attackgerbil August 10, 2006, 9:37 pm
  • Strike at the knees to ARod with runners on 2nd and 3rd with one away. Generous zone low so far.

    attackgerbil August 10, 2006, 9:38 pm
  • Abreu deep fly to left, and the runners advance.
Alex up. Big piece today on Baseball Analysts arguing Alex has been pulling off the ball this year. Lots of visual evidence. Over on WasWatching, Steve Lombardi chalks it up to Alex pressing with Sheff on the DL. Make of it what you will.

    YF August 10, 2006, 9:38 pm
  • A foul on a low pitch, then a ball. On the 1-2, ARod swings under a fastball for strike three. Two away.

    attackgerbil August 10, 2006, 9:40 pm
  • Alex Ks. Did he pull off or just miss? Who knows. Same result.

    YF August 10, 2006, 9:40 pm
  • Giambi in to make something out of the situation, takes a ball then a strike. The 1-1 from Garcia is a curve way inside. The next pitch is taken for a ball. Hitter’s pitch here. Giambi takes _just_ outside to load the bases. I think it was a strike.

    attackgerbil August 10, 2006, 9:43 pm
  • “Looks like Giambi is trying to manufacture 3 runs here”–Paul O’Neill
But he takes the walk anyway.

    YF August 10, 2006, 9:43 pm
  • Jorge ropes to straightaway center to end the first. Damn, that looked promising. Checking out for a few minutes, back later. Go Yanks.

    attackgerbil August 10, 2006, 9:44 pm
  • Feh. 3 runners stranded.

    YF August 10, 2006, 9:45 pm
  • Ugh. Iguchi 2-bagger. Some disturbing observations on Mussina and his second half problems over at Bronx Banter today. Two batters faced, two balls scorched thus far….

    YF August 10, 2006, 9:49 pm
  • K! Looked like the offspeed or slider over the plate.

    YF August 10, 2006, 9:53 pm
  • Where’d everybody go? Gerb??

    YF August 10, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • Johnny saves the day/inning! Nice grab on Konerko’s shot.

    YF August 10, 2006, 9:56 pm
  • Cano, now 6 for 10, gets another ducksnort double to left. Had one of those last night, too. He’s raking, and Lady Luck is on his shoulder as well. Killer combo.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:00 pm
  • Away board: Boston down 2-1 again in KC. And the Angels, whom the Yanks face tomorrow, are getting destroyed by the Tribe.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:02 pm
  • Wilson Ks on heat over the plate, but inside. Grrr.
    Melky pops to short.
How many we gonna strand in sco/po tonight?

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:03 pm
  • Damon walks. Here comes Jeets with 2 on.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • This was a long half-inning.

    Kevin August 10, 2006, 10:14 pm
  • Jeter Ks on a slider, low after a LONG at bat. That exact pitch, also out of the zone, had been called a strike on the 2nd pitch of the sequence. Tough.
Yanks have now left 5 men on in 2 innings. That’s not good.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:14 pm
  • Ouch. Dye hit on the right wrist.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:18 pm
  • Pierzynski single through the right side. 2 on now.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:19 pm
  • Crede up. This guy becoming a Yankee killer.
And he gives Alex a gift-wrapped 2xplay ball, which Alex tosses into right. Dye scores. Men on the corners, none out. Bag of crap.
Tabs gonna love that tomorrow if the Yanks lose.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:22 pm
  • Ack! Cintron single to left, Melky plays it into a double. Bases clear. 3-0.
    No help for Moose tonight.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:23 pm
  • Anderson K’ed on the backdoor curve. 1 down.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:25 pm
  • And Podsednik puts one up the middle to bring in Cintron. 4-0.
As Leiter notes, Moose leaving a lot of balls up in the zone tonight.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:27 pm
  • And Cano drops fumbles the transfer on a 2xplay ball. That’s a hit batsmen and 3 misplays in the field this inning. And now a passed ball. Can’t give a team 6 outs per inning and expect to get away with it.
    Iguchi finally grounds out 4-3.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:29 pm
  • That was also a long half-inning.

    Kevin August 10, 2006, 10:30 pm
  • Abreu walks. Will he be stranded, too?
Here comes Alex. Time for some restitution?

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:34 pm
  • Almost. Alex puts one to the wall in center. 1 out.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:35 pm
  • Abreu steals 2nd. Nice. That’s gonna kill the shift.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:37 pm
  • Shift shmift. Finally the Yanks cash in on their runners and JV’s soaring pitch count with the Giambi dinger to left center. 4-2.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:39 pm
  • Jorge out 4-3.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:40 pm
  • Moose leaving a lot of balls up in the zone tonight
    Just like…Ron Jeremy!

    SF August 10, 2006, 10:40 pm
  • Cano another double! This one without any lucky break–a yank-job down the rightfield line. Man on 2nd, 1 out.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:41 pm
  • Wilson ks. 3 outs. Forgot the Alex K.
Yanks have now stranded 6 men in 3 innings, 3, in scoring position.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:44 pm
  • SF: One more Ron Jeremy reference and we’re gonna start to worry…..and watch out with those italics in the threads!

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:45 pm
  • Hoot! Royals put up a 3 spot in the 8th off Boston, go back up 5-4!!!! GO KC!!!!!!

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:47 pm
  • Dye singles with 1 down.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:49 pm
  • Pierzynski flies way deep to Johnny. Dye steals second. Looked like he was out. Now Crede up. Always bad things with him at the plate…..

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:51 pm
  • K! Not sure what he was looking for. That was right down the middle. Yanks go back to offense. How many to strand this inning…..

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:55 pm
  • Melkster walks! Strandee uno on base.

    YF August 10, 2006, 10:59 pm
  • Damon pops to third. 1 down.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:00 pm

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:01 pm
  • Jeter Ks.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:02 pm
  • Hopefully Abreu can take advantage of Javier here, with two outs in the 4th, one on.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:03 pm
  • Abreu fouls back one right down the middle.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:04 pm
  • At the rate Vazquez is playing, the Yankees are going to miss their flight.

    Hudson August 10, 2006, 11:05 pm
  • Abreu does what he does second best: Draws the walk.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:06 pm
  • Can we get a little Alex Rodemption?

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:07 pm
  • Abreu = potential strandee #2.
Alex gets another redemption shot with men on.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:07 pm
  • Man, Hudson, it’s like watching Leiter work out there. The director of the broadcast must be getting his workout on this game. Pitch, cut to Torre, cut to bats, cut to stats, cut….

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:09 pm
  • YF: that Boston trip ain’t looking so necessary, for one of us, at least.

    SF August 10, 2006, 11:09 pm
  • Javier is not long for this game…Please make him pay A Rod.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:09 pm
  • A Rod. Works the walk. Will Ozzie pull in a lefty?

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:11 pm
  • And he walks the bases loaded. On comes Giambi, who’s already homered. Cotts to relieve?

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:11 pm
  • We are on the same page YF.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:12 pm
  • Damnit

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:13 pm
  • I knew I needed to get out that negative reinforcement post before Jason’s AB.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:13 pm
  • Vaz stays on, Ks Giambi. Yanks strand 3–again. That’s 9 stranded in 4 innings. Yes. The Yanks have stranded 9 runners, 5 in scoring position, in 4 innings.
A team that gets on base is gonna leave a lot of men on. Fine. But, this percentage is ridiculous.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:14 pm
  • Mussina comes back and throws the same pitch Vasquez threw to get a strike out. Same result.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:16 pm
  • SF: Yanks not playing much better than the Sox, as this thing indicates. So hang your head about the Sox, but the first-place Bombers are losing a sloppy game here, almost blew a giant lead last night, and did blow a lead the night before. So, what, is the entire AL East infected with NLitis?

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:17 pm
  • Theeeee Gi-am-bi-no! … Ks to end the inning.

    Hudson August 10, 2006, 11:18 pm
  • Please, YF. The Yanks are like 17-7 in their last 24. Can the “woe is us” BS.

    SF August 10, 2006, 11:18 pm
  • Vazuez pitch count after 4 innings: 459. But at least he works slowly.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:18 pm
  • It hasn’t been pretty lately, SF. But, yeah, from where your sitting…..
    Iguchi single.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:19 pm
  • FC to end it. And we go on to the fifth of this Yankee strandathon.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:22 pm
  • Daily Show guest tonight: Dale Earnheart Jr.
Really cutting to the heart of the issues tonight. Bring on Colbert!

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:23 pm
  • Excuse me. Earnhardt. But, really, who gives a shit. They drive around in a circle for 3 hours. Let’s see him hit a curveball.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:24 pm
  • Meanwhile, Posada Ks on a fastball both high and inside.
    Vazquez pitch count now 523.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:25 pm
  • Cano Ks on heat high and away after a whole bunch of inside fastballs. Nice sequence from Vaz.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:30 pm
  • Wilson single up the middle. Potential strandee 10.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:31 pm
  • Leche pops out in foul territory to Crede. 10 stranded in 5 innings. That averages to….2 per inning! We’re aces at this math stuff.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:33 pm
  • It’s giving me an eye-twitch. That and Berman’s non-stop-talking about how sports center isn’t on right now because of the Yankee rain delay.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:36 pm
  • If Ozzie lets the top of the line up face Vasquez in the 6th I think we will score.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:37 pm
  • Where’d everyone go???
Dye ks for the 2nd out.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:38 pm
  • Of course, we will still leave 3 on base.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:38 pm
  • Pierzynski out 4-3. ChiSox down 1, 2, 3. Yowzah! Time to strand some runners!

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:39 pm
  • Damn. Cotts is in.
I sitll think we’ll score here…just less than if Vasquez was in.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:41 pm
  • Johnny almost puts one down the left field line for a lead off double…but it goes foul. Uggg
1-2 pitch from Cotts is driven to left for the fly out.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:42 pm
  • Damon flies out deep. Here comes the captain….

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:43 pm
  • Jeter walks. On base 2 of 4 times tonight. Strandee 11 in place.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:45 pm
  • The umpires are graded on “pace of game.” This thing, after a rain delay, has to be their worst nightmare.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:46 pm
  • Will Bobby break the streak?

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:47 pm
  • Where’s Nick, Walein?

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:47 pm
  • That’s a very good question. He hasn’t called me for an update…I’m guessing
    a) At a bar watching the game.
    b) Doing something romantical with “the lady.”

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:48 pm
  • Abreu drills one to right. Jeets motors to third! Rally!!!

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:48 pm
  • Now we need some Alex Rodemption!

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:49 pm
  • If only A and B could go together.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:49 pm
  • Whoa. That was a little scary.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:53 pm
  • WTF? Alex pops out. Abreu almost caught napping off first. He looked out.
    Guillen argues. And he’s run.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:53 pm
  • Ozzie’s got a date tonight, wants to leave early.
I know. I’m trying to juggle A and B right now.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:54 pm
  • That was a good call. Abreu was in, Konerko wasn’t on the bag.
Giambi is going to blow this.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:55 pm
  • So I guess this is what the Philly fans are talking about re Bobby not having his head in the game.
Sloppy. But if that’s the worst thing we see….
    Abreu steals 2nd.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:56 pm
  • Brilliant.

    walein August 10, 2006, 11:56 pm
  • This is incredible. Giambi Ks. Yanks have stranded 12, 7 in scoring position.

    YF August 10, 2006, 11:57 pm
  • Kay says the Yanks have stranded 13. I think he’s off one.
3 in the first, 2 in the second, 1 in the third, 3 in the fourth, 1 in the fifth, 2 in the sixth: 12. Where’s Kay finding that other guy?

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:00 am
  • Meanwhile, 2 down as Moose is running through the ChiSox. If his defense hadn’t donated 4 runs to the ChiSox cause a few hours ago, this thing might still be under control.

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:03 am
  • Mussina doesn’t get the strikeout call.
    Giambi has left 5 on.
Without the SO call, the double extends the inning.
The breaks aren’t going our way.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:05 am
  • Rodriguez better hope someone gets this game back for Musinna because he’s the goat right now.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:06 am
  • A couple of hits from Anderson and Podsednik with 2 outs, and now it’s 5-2. No 2-out hits for the Yanks.
Podsednik dead to rights on the pitch out. Nice toss from Jorge, on the smart call.
Yanks should be winning this one.

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:08 am
  • Jorge Ks. Feh.

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:12 am
  • This has become so irritating. Jorge out, looking, on a nasty curve.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:12 am
  • Running out of gas here….

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:13 am
  • Cano Ks, out 2-3.

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:14 am
  • And now we’re getting to that place in the game, after leaving tons of people on base, where we stop putting people on.
Our play comes in the 8th and 9th.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:14 am
  • Wilson doubles. Yanks get….wait for it….another baserunner. Not retired in order yet.

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:15 am
  • Wilson wants to be stranded, so he hits a double.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:15 am

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:15 am
  • LECHE!!!!! Yes. Just like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:16 am
  • But now this is gonna be even more painful if it ends as an L.

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:16 am
  • I know. But for a moment. I feel like I can love again.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:17 am
  • Time to eat a late night west coast dinner. Back in a few.
    Let’s Go Yankees!

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:18 am
  • Damon infield single, and Jeter grounds out 4-3. ANOTHER STRANDEE! 13! One in every inning….

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:21 am
  • Myers in. Thome grounds into the 4-6FC.

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:26 am
  • The Proctologist on for Konerko.

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:29 am
  • Konerko hits a 500 foot foul ball.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:30 am
  • Konerko Ks.

    YF August 11, 2006, 12:31 am
  • And then the Proctologist throws the high cheese by him. Must be watching Mariano tapes.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:31 am
  • Proctor does the job. I have to say, Scott Proctor has been slowly but surely making a believer out of me.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:34 am
  • Proctor does the job. I have to say, Scott Proctor has been slowly but surely making a believer out of me.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:34 am
  • Not sure how the third pitch was a strike but the 1st two were balls. But after a foul off it’s 2-2 to Abreu.
    He grounds out.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:38 am
  • Once again. First pitch down the middle, second pitch not even close–called a strike.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:39 am
  • Rodriguez, not looking s great in this at bat.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:40 am
  • Seems like th east coast has went to bed. I’m going to sign off for a bit. Hope for the best.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:40 am
  • and there was one. Jorge comes to bat to lead off the ninth. 1 pitch, 1 out. Not good

    Nick-YF August 11, 2006, 12:52 am
  • Cano at bat.

    Nick-YF August 11, 2006, 12:53 am
  • grounds out sharply to Crede.

    Nick-YF August 11, 2006, 12:53 am
  • Bernie comes out promptly lines a single to right.

    Nick-YF August 11, 2006, 12:54 am
  • Melky comes to bat and takes the first pitch for a strike.

    Nick-YF August 11, 2006, 12:55 am
  • he beats out an infield hit. Runners at first and second. Damon to bat.

    Nick-YF August 11, 2006, 12:56 am
  • Damn. Those first pitch strike calls to Melky and Damon were dubious. THe umpiring team of this series should be under investigation.
The Yankees should have gotten a few runners in.

    walein August 11, 2006, 12:58 am
  • Irritating game. Some positives: Moose pitched well (despite being screwed by his defense and questionable umpiring), Melky’s HR (hey, that SLG is rising), Cano’s continued hitting, Giambi’s HR to LCF – good to see he can do more than pull the ball, good work by the ‘pen.
The bad is obvious. ARod’s error was bad. Melky’s hurt too. And the LOB was atrocious.
