Derby

And so we plunge into the deep dark recess of the sporting year that is the Major League Baseball All Star Break. There is literally NOTHING. GOING. ON. in any major sport worth watching for the next couple of days. you can try stuff like this but it doesn’t really muster. That means that gerbil has no excuse to not clean those gutters, trim those hedges, update that resume, finish that correspondence course, respond to that paternity petition… Oh wait, a bunch of really strong guys are going to hit a bunch of home runs. *Whew* I almost reconciled that I would have to actually _talk_ with my family.

Your contestants:
Robinson Cano, Yankees
Mark Trumbo, Angels
Prince Fielder, Tigers
Jose Bautista, Blue Jays
Matt Kemp, Dodgers
Carlos Gonzalez, Rockies
Carlos Beltran, Cardinals
Andrew McCutchen, Pirates

Swing for the fences, boys, so that I may not must mend mine.

  • Was Kemp choosing the best players or the best power hitters?

I like Cano’s chances of repeating.

  • I bet McCutcheon hit’s a really high percentage of the ballls they lob to him. As for HR’s, I’ll go with Prince.

  • Fix this stupid competition: batsmen are the best 10 HR totals either league, 30 pitches each, 30 umpires of their choice in the infield with no pads on. One point for a dinger, two points for an umpire, three points for knocking Joe West out.

  • I’ve played ten pin!! And.. nevermind.

  • I’m at a park watching my older daughter dominate the monkey bars while her littlle sister convalesces. Better than watching slow pitch softball by a mile. Best pro all-star festivities are clearly basketball. Worst are football. Baseball falls somewhere between.

  • They must have told Cano there was a runner on second.

  • That was pretty embarrassing for KC.

    What a bunch of assholes.

  • Pretty boring HRD imo. Though I must admit I took vicious pleasure in seeing the KC fans rooting against Cano, and him getting zero homeruns. So far it’s about all a Sox Fan is able to root for this season!

  • I’m a bit surprised to not see a post on Reggie’s big mouth.
So, prompted by a radio discussion, here goes.
On one hand, I love the candor. I don’t necessarily agree, but I love the candor.
On the other, it is a bit of a surprise to learn that someone of The Straw’s (as in “that stirs the drink”) stature would show such poor judgment.
Dude, you work for the Yankees. Why would you go off on Rodriguez like that?
He might have stirred the drink at one point but he apparently hasn’t learned who spreads the butter on the bread.
And his comments on which HOFers don’t belong in the HOF?
    Again, poor judgment.
Although he might have a point, and many of those discussions take place here (Rice, etc.) it kind of stinks of entitlement for a HOFer to publicly question the credentials of other HOFers.
I heard someone say that such comments might be received differently had they come from an uber-elite HOFer like Musial or Aaron and not Jackson. I’m not sure how I feel about that one yet. That idea needs to simmer.
But end of the day, I’m disappointed in Reggie for this stuff. It’s stuff I’d expect it from someone like Papelbon, who is a bit challenged when it comes to maturity. But a guy like Reggie, who has been around a while, should know better.

  • Horse, the NHL all-star game is pretty weak, too. Probably somewhere between NFL and MLB.

  • hi IBM, a couple of comments were made in the game thread the other night.. starting with krueg. I pretty much agree with what you just wrote.

    attackgerbil July 10, 2012, 1:58 pm
  • A-HA!
We went to watch a bike race Sunday night. It was much preferable to the underachieving Jon Lester and his band of minor-leaguers.
So I didn’t even bother to check the game post. I was too depressed by then.

  • OK, I yukked up the derby boo-fest. But now I hear that KC fans were hassling Cano’s family. That’s crap, KC fans. You’re better than that. (Except for that one guy who kept telling me that Steve Balboni couldn’t it a sack full of baseballs with a tennis racquet. That guy is not better than that. And you know who were are. I mean who you were.)
