Do You Smell Smoke? A’s-Yanks Gamer VI

Maybe not smoke but you can smell something.  Chad Gaudin and Rich Harden combined to one-hit the Yanks yesterday while the Athletics scored seven runs, including three off of Scott Proctor who recorded only one out, causing the Yank reliever to go Johnny Blaze on various pieces of his kit.  Fortunately, Pyro Proctor was smart enough to remove the items from his person before the immolation.  What can the A’s do for an encore to drive Yankees and their fans farther into the depths of insanity?  How about send Dan Haren and his league-leading 1.91 ERA to mystify the anemic Yankee hitters.  It’s an early Sunday getaway game as Andy Pettitte takes the mound for the Yankees to try and earn a season split with the A’s, who head to Toronto while the Yankees host the Twins tomorrow.  We can only assume that FDNY will be on hand to extinguish whatever the Bombers decide to torch today.  Hopefully it will be Haren, but somehow I doubt it.  Bronx is Burning indeed.

  • It’s interesting to note that New York was 15-11 in June, which was the best team record in the AL East for the month. Somehow I feel like I’m betraying the team by not thinking of this as a positive thing, but it’s also just what happens when one picks a couple of arbitrary dates in order to buff a brick.

  • Ick. Pettitte out of the game in the top of the second. Every A’s batter already has a hit except for Stewart. Cust and Johnson both with Dingers. Abreu’s error in the first cost the Yanks one run. The rest are Andy’s.

  • That 2-0 to ARod looked close; he doesn’t get the call and doesn’t like it. The 3-0 was the same pitch; he gets the call this time. Then ARod walks to lead off the Yankee second.

  • Abreu grounds out, scoring ARod, advancing Hideki to second. Andy Phillips singles to left to score Hideki. A’s 8, Yanks 2, two away to Melky.
Figures the one day we might be able to get to Haren we spot him eight runs.

  • Chavez makes a great stab on a hot smash up third and throws across to end the inning. Fine play there.

  • Is it me or is it getting worse than earlier in the season?

  • Mike Hargrove resigned as manager of the mariners, he will leave the position after todays game.

    TJ July 1, 2007, 2:16 pm
  • Haren Ks Jeter and ARod to end the Yankee third. He can be so filthy.

  • Villone puts Cust onto his backside with the high heat, then comes back with another high inside fastball that is popped to center for he second out.

  • TJ, did they say why? Was it personal reasons? The Mariners have been on fire.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:23 pm
  • That’s a stunner. I listen Hargrove on the radio all the time. It seemed that he was pretty happy with the team as of late.

  • SEATTLE — Mariners manager Mike Hargrove is resigning as of the end of Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Mariners said John McLaren will be the new team manager and start the job Monday when Seattle plays in Kansas City.
Hargrove has been manager of the Mariners since October 2004. He is fifth among active managers with 1,187 career wins, including 191 with Seattle, heading into Sunday’s game.
Hargrove said he has realized over the past few weeks that he cannot continue to do the job if his passion has begun to fade. He said this has been a great place to work and he’s proud of the work the team has done to turn the club around over the past three years. Hargrove said he has high expectations for the team this season.
McLaren rejoined the Mariners this year as bench coach. He is in his 21st season as a big league coach and his 11th with Seattle. His 11 seasons as a Mariners coach are the most by any coach in Mariners history.

  • Haren looks pissed after walking Posada to lead off the Yankee fourth inning.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:27 pm
  • TJ: wow. That’s remarkable.
Hideki knocks a hard shot up first lands fair and then bounces into the stands. Would have scored Jorge if it stayed in play but he’s recalled to third on the GRD.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:29 pm
  • Abreu flies out to left. Both runners tag; Jorge scores. A’s 8, Yanks 3 with Matsui on third with one away.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:30 pm
  • AP takes a big cut at the first pitch and fouls it off. The 0-1 is grounded to the right of Crosby who makes a great stab but doesn’t have time to throw to first. He holds onto it as Matsui scores on the infield single. Cabrera up with one away, A’s 8, Yanks 4.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:31 pm
  • Melky reaches down and strokes a double to right on a low breaking pitch, fair up the first base line. AP holds at third. One away as Damon steps in.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:34 pm
  • Damon Ks. Then Haren hits Jeter on the left elbow to load the bases. ARod up with two away.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:39 pm
  • Robi flies out to right to end the threat. Too bad.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:41 pm
  • The A’s go down in order in the fifth. Villone gave up a single to Kotsay in the third but otherwise has not allowed a baserunner since coming on for Pettitte in the second.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:47 pm
  • Yanks down in order in the fifth.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:51 pm
  • Bruney comes on for Villone and promptly gives up a hard single to right to Kotsay.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 2:54 pm
  • Strike-him-out, throw-him-out as Stewart can’t hold up on a high full count pitch and Kotsay is frozen between first and second.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 3:03 pm
  • Andy Phillips is on fire. 3-3 with a single after Abreu flies out to center. Then Cabrera with a single to left to make it first and second to Damon. That was a hard pitch to hit. Haren’s done.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 3:07 pm
  • Jeter goes inside out to right to bring the score to 8-5 in the 6th. Two outs to Robi Cano.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 3:34 pm
  • Vizcaino gives up two more with the bases juiced to make it 11-5. Pyro coming to the mound. Blah.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 4:05 pm
  • Vizcaino being Vizcaino.

no sleep til brooklyn SF July 1, 2007, 4:06 pm
  • Alan Embree on to face Jeter in the bottom of the ninth, Yanks down 11-5.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 4:22 pm
  • Jeter pulls a single to left center to start things off in the ninth.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 4:23 pm
  • Robi grounds out to first unassisted. Jeter to second on the play. One out to ARod.

    attackgerbil July 1, 2007, 4:24 pm
  • ARod works a long at bat for a walk. Jorge grounds into the 463 to end the game. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
