Dodge Those Brooms: Sox-M’s Gamer VI

We’re a bit groggy today. For the second time this week, the Sox played a late game and lost, thus making the hours we spent cutting into sleep time to be with the team (in spirit) a complete waste of time.

Thankfully, today’s affair is an afternooner, so hopefully the Red Sox will stop sucking and realize these are the Seattle Mariners. We’re not holding out too much hope. If you can’t hit Jeff Weaver, that pretty much says it all. Also, the Red Sox are 2-8 in their last 10 games against Seattle. Yuck.

Daisuke Matsuzaka will be asked to play stopper this afternoon against Ryan Fiereband, who’s given up 17 runs in just under 19 innings this season. But he’s a lefty, so again, he’ll probably throw a perfect game (hey, that throwaway line worked last time!).

  • First time this season Daisuke has really looked like the Daisuke I’ve known. He’s been on the verge of the old swagger and confidence a number of times, but has never fully been there. I wonder if he’ll be able to keep it up throughout the game. He’s working fast, which has always been his trademark, but something he hasn’t done consistently so far this year, and he’s (finally) commanding the strikezone with his fastball. I wonder if he’s finally solved the problem of the slippery American ball and his relatively small hand. Probably helped that his old manager, a pitcher to boot, was in town a few weeks ago. I imagine they had a lot to talk about. Fingers crossed.

He can’t do the job, and it’s on to the bottom of the 3rd.

  • Bottom line is that the Sox are lucky that the Yankees have sucked a** lately. Had they even been half-competent, our lead would be back down to 7 games.
This team doesn’t need Fenway. It needs a couple of new players, on the mound and elsewhere. Without Schilling at even 80% of his old self this team is not built for October. Sorry, they just aren’t. Two starters and a vacuum at the bottom of the lineup sounds like a decent NL team to me. Blech.

As for this road trip, if they win today they go 5-4 on the road which is not bad. If they go 4-5, it’s bad but not terrible. Playing .500 on the road is decent. I’m not condoning the crappy pitching of late (ahem Gabbard) but I’m keeping positive.

  • Something that no one has touched on regarding Lugo is that, by all accounts, he’s a very strong influence in the clubhouse, especially with the Dominican contingent. His hitless streak absolutely blows, but I’m betting there’s more to it with him than just his lowly BA. Maybe he’s this year’s Milar in the sense that he keeps the team lose. I certainly remember him single handedly destroying the Sox a few times with TB. Where those skills have gone is anybody’s guess…

I think that’s a unfair to Lugo- he’s been better than average defensively, at worst.
The thing is, if the Sox get rid of Lugo, who do they replace him with? Cora? I think not.
He’s been horrible at the plate, to be sure- but unless the Sox can pull off a trade to replace him (and there aren’t a lot of good hitting shortstops available) I don’t how they change at this point.

  • NSTB – I’ve said this before: Red Sox shortstops are like Spinal Tap drummers.

    Ayuh - SF June 27, 2007, 7:56 pm
  • I’m as sick and tired of Lugo as anyone, but if I want to read posts that piss and moan about how lousy players are, I’ll go to LoHud.

    Ayuh - SF June 27, 2007, 7:58 pm
  • The Cabrera non-signing is a red herring. There’s been a ton written about how that mistake was the one that cascaded the Sox’ SS woes and their current situation. I totally disagree. The real mistake, in baseball terms, was not waiting out Edgar Renteria. Forget the Crisp acquisition and all that happened after that. Renteria wasn’t as bad as everyone perceived him to be, and he was in a new league, in a new city, and everything I have read points to the fact that he may have been hurt nearly the entire year but played through it. In my opinion, he deserved more patience.

    SF June 27, 2007, 7:58 pm
  • I agree. Getting rid of Renteria was a huge mistake.

    jp-sf June 27, 2007, 8:00 pm
  • The only time I liked Renteria was when he made the last out of the year in 2004.

  • Should the Sox lose today, they will be 12-13 in June. It’s been an extremely unimpressive month, to be honest. Ten game leads are great and all, but I am tired of them being the excuse for avoiding a discussion of the team’s shortcomings. It seems like any time someone wants to talk about the flaws of the squad or possible solutions, you get a cry of “ten game lead!”, which just isn’t a legit response to me.
(that’s not directed at anyone here, in this thread, just a general observation of Sox discussions around the web, sometimes here as well)

    SF June 27, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • Ugh, I was hoping the game would be over when I got back. It’s almost a shame Papelbon kicks so much butt. *crosses fingers*

Maybe it was just the shot of Pineiro that made me think that.

    SF June 27, 2007, 8:19 pm
  • Cora: lean the thigh into pitches like that, come on!

    Devine June 27, 2007, 8:21 pm
  • I agree that the team can’t sit on their laurels, 10 game lead or not- they need to keep pushing. There are gaping holes in the rotation, starting and bullpen. Our bench is only so good.
In other news, what the heck is up with Ichiro’s knees? His knock-kneed stretching looks painful.
    Crap. Doubleplay. Shiteous.

    Devine June 27, 2007, 8:23 pm
  • Well…now that I think about it, it was that lasting image of Pokey throwing to Doug M. (sorry, can’t spell his name) that ended the amazing 2004 ALCS.

    Rain SF June 27, 2007, 8:34 pm
  • Tough play for Manny there, I don’t see how he could have had that one.
Come on, Gerb, Manny’s line to that ball looked like a presidential signature. And Coco wasn’t in any backup position at all. Not an easy play, but Manny made it look impossible.

    SF June 27, 2007, 8:36 pm
  • SF: I watched the play/replay on a 20″ tv from about 15 feet away. I guess it looked tougher from my vantage than it was.

    attackgerbil June 27, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • “Seriously, we have a majorly flawed squad, and it’s on Theo to get creative.”
…this game rests ENTIRELY on Ortiz, Manny, and Youkilis’ usually-capable shoulders. The rest of the lineup went a combined 7/23 with 5 walks; those three went 0/14 with a walk and a ridiculous 9 men LOB. (Well actually…Ortiz really deserves most of the blame for this; SEVEN left on. In fact, Youk never came up with anybody on base. Wow.)
When the 3-4-5 hitters play like that, you don’t usually score many runs. And as brutal as this series was…it wasn’t all bad. Coco’s hitting like he hasn’t since…I dunno, that first month after he got here, before he broke his finger? Pedroia’s proving to be a capable 2-hitter. Lowell showed some signs of life yesterday and got on twice today. Oh and Matsuzaka pitched a pretty good game against an AL team; not a good AL team, but an AL team.
That said…definitely wouldn’t mind a deal for another No. 5 / longman. Or just another solid righty bullpen arm…Timlin’s corpse is gone as soon as Donnelly is healthy, and Pineiro probably belongs in the NL. I haven’t read up on it since, but were Tavarez’s struggles injury related? He hopped off the mound funny, as Remy and Orsillo pointed out, and then everything just started falling apart. Of course…there’s an alternative dominating AA-ball right now…but considering the sh*t I gave New York for rushing Hughes, I’m not about to start screaming for Cla. Though his numbers ARE Hughesian…better, even.
Here’s what does have me worried. Very worried, especially the part about Manny:
“Manny Ramirez went 0-for-5 and failed to get to Jose Lopez’s game-winning double Wednesday in the loss to the Mariners.
Think about what kind of record the Red Sox might have right now if their two best hitters ever came through in big situations. David Ortiz is has just one RBI in 31 at-bats in close-and-late situations this season, and Manny is hitting .233 with four RBI in 30 at-bats. Ortiz’s struggles are probably a fluke. Manny, though, is frequently being overpowered by top relievers. It’s a definitely cause for concern.”
From Rotoworld. This is basically something I’ve felt for a few weeks now but I hadn’t been able to put my finger on why. Like they say, I’m pretty convinced Ortiz’s problems are a fluke…but Manny’s…
Oh…and FWIW, Rotoworld also pretty much accused the HP umpire of either intentionally f*cking the Sox over because of his run-in with Tito the other day or just being incompetent. Either way, they indicate that he cost them a run on a blown call to Ortiz. I didn’t see the game, but I agree completely…heh.
