Dodging Raindrops: Twins-Sox Gamers I/II

Twinbill today, making up yesterday's rainout.  However, precipitation is expected throughout the day today, so we'll see if the Sox can get them in.  Use this thread for all commentary, the early contest starts at 12:35, weather permitting.

  • We’ll probably get the first game in, it’ll be called after ~7 innings, and then the second one will be rained out. Both teams have off-days tomorrow, though it’s supposed to rain then too. What a shitty way to stall our win streak!

  • Greek god of go-ahead homeruns!

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 12:46 pm
  • I like this Nick Green kid.

    Jackie (SF) April 22, 2009, 1:02 pm
  • Nick Green puts us up 4-0. Remember when Wakefield used to get no run support? He’s got 4 runs behind him after recording only 3 outs. Nice.
And Ellsbury with a solid single. He and the hitting coach have obviously been working on his mechanics.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 1:03 pm
  • Or, he remembered that he’s not a homerun hitter and has stopped trying to pull every single pitch. Either way, I like the results this past few games.

    Brad April 22, 2009, 1:09 pm
  • He’s not stepping with his front foot super early anymore, so he’s not getting off-balance. That was what his problem looked like last week.
Wakefield hits a batter’s baggy shirt, two on now with two outs. Oh and look, the Twins’ best player is up.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 1:15 pm
  • There should be a special rule for Wake, he should have to hit you twice before you get a base.

    LocklandSF April 22, 2009, 1:16 pm
  • Hahaha Lockland!
Drew, Georgian God of Doubles. And then Bay robbed of a double by a fantastic play by Cuddyer.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 1:20 pm
  • Mike Lowell goes DEEP! 6-0 good guys

    LocklandSF April 22, 2009, 1:21 pm
  • Lowell joins the 2-run homer party. Save some for tonight boys!

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 1:21 pm
  • looks like CC might need that heating pad on the ‘ol belly again in NY. Things not going well.

    Brad April 22, 2009, 1:40 pm
  • Two infield pop-ups with the bases loaded by the Twins?

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 1:52 pm
  • JD Drew: “Rocco is on the DL? That’s cool, I’ll just whip out my big-boy pants today.”

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 1:56 pm
  • Anybody know how the rain looks at the moment? I was really looking forward to a whole day at the office being distracted by baseball.

    rootbeerfloat April 22, 2009, 2:13 pm
  • It’s raining a little bit and looks like it’s going to get worse, RBF. Tonight’s game will probably be delayed, if not cancelled.
Ellsbury with another hit, though he’s thrown out stealing.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 2:17 pm
  • Rain coming down harder now.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 2:23 pm
  • wakefield strikes out gomez on a 73 MPH “fastball” that he can’t catch up to.
CC giving away runs like they were kittens.

    sf rod April 22, 2009, 2:23 pm
  • Papi misses his first homer by a foot.
I don’t know why, but that kittens comment has me laughing really hard Rod.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 2:30 pm
  • wrko radio guy’s are saying there are close to 10,000 empty seats at yankee stadium today. can that even be?

    sf rod April 22, 2009, 2:31 pm
  • Damn. That means I might start having to actually work. After this game of course.

    rootbeerfloat April 22, 2009, 2:33 pm
  • Mark Redmond joining the fastball-to-the-crotch club. That looked painful.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 2:36 pm
  • Three straight walks, the rain looks like it’s effecting the pitching.

  • dickey comes into a wet hard spot.

  • Jeter “crushes” one to CF in New York. Only 4HR so far today!

    Brad April 22, 2009, 2:44 pm
  • Okay let’s put in the 2nd string and save some of these runs for tonight.
    You’re a dirty man, rod.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 2:44 pm
  • Aaaaaand the tarp is out.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 2:45 pm
  • out comes the tarp. rain delay.

  • couldn’t help myself ath.

    sf rod April 22, 2009, 2:47 pm
  • looks like the yanks ducked having the sox tee off on wang this weekend, as they have sent him back to florida for “extended spring training”. if i remember correctly, igawa had a lights out spring. it would be nice to get to see him this weekend.

    sf rod April 22, 2009, 2:55 pm
  • we wished that once, and Igawa threw a gem, Rod. Let’s hold off on hoping to see a guy we don’t see that often. I’ll take my chances with Joba and Pettitte, whom they’ve seen a few more times.

    Brad April 22, 2009, 3:02 pm
  • And, I was really hoping to the Red Sox were going to get to pound Crispy Creme this weekend.

    Brad April 22, 2009, 3:03 pm
  • i hear ya brad. it’s just an upside down world when the sox are hoping to face CC, wang, and joba in a 3 game set.

    sf rod April 22, 2009, 3:09 pm
  • FYI, Jeter’s HR would have been out of any park in baseball…he did crush it.

    sam-YF April 22, 2009, 3:10 pm
  • I saw it, I just have a hard time believing Jeter “crushed” a ball to CF in the April rain. I mean, it’s not like the guy has huge power.

    Brad April 22, 2009, 3:23 pm
  • sam- didn’t see jeters HR, but it’s a shame and unfair that many folks are gonna look at most homers in yankee stadium as cheese no matter how well they were struck. 25 HR’s in 5 games will do that. would a humidor make any difference at sea level?

    sf rod April 22, 2009, 3:33 pm
  • Brad – Jeter has shown some pretty decent power over the years at times. Its not always there but Ive seen him get a hold of a few that were some serious shots.
Rod – Im gonna wait before I crown this place as a launching pad. We are still in the first homestand ever. The game yesterday I went the ball was barely carrying at all. It may be a different thing all together at night when they play more than half of their home games.

    sam-YF April 22, 2009, 3:43 pm
  • Nick Green destroyed a ball over the monster today, so I think it’s safe to say that anyone can crush a ball at some point or another.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 3:46 pm
  • game called. 6 in a row.

I TOTALLY nailed the cancelled-after-7+ prediction.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 4:23 pm
  • Only in Boston can the local sports network kill three hours between Red Sox games with Red Sox filler content, like Wake playing mini golf against Kotteras during spring training, a speacial half hour on Nomar, and other asssorted random Red Sox content, while TWO other professional Boston sports teams are playing in their post-seasons.

    LocklandSF April 22, 2009, 6:19 pm
  • Any word on rain in Boston? How does the second game look?

    rootbeerfloat April 22, 2009, 6:48 pm
  • Rain delay to start, no clue if it will go tonight (apparently it will be an afternoon game tomorrow if it has to be postponed).

    Devine April 22, 2009, 7:03 pm
  • Start time is supposed to be 7:55 Eastern. I guess we’ll see…

    Paul SF April 22, 2009, 7:32 pm
  • The rain is supposed to get lighter as the night goes on, so hopefully we’ll get some game in.
So does Wakefield get a Complete Game for pitching all 7 innings today?

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 7:43 pm
  • Looks like they’re playing, at least for now….

    rootbeerfloat April 22, 2009, 7:58 pm
  • Hey look, the game is starting?
I didn’t realize we’re playing against Liriano. I don’t like this one bit.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 7:58 pm
  • I didn’t see Penny’s last two starts, so I’m excited to see him pitch tonight. So far his fastball and curveball precision look good.

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 8:00 pm
  • I know it is Earth Day, but these unis are awful.

    SF April 22, 2009, 8:03 pm
  • I can only find the Earth Day patch they were scheduled to wear. How was the uniform changed?

    FenSheaParkway April 22, 2009, 8:21 pm
  • I couldn’t agree with you more SF.
Penny looking pretty good, no rain here in Southie right now, or at my buddies place in the South End.

    LocklandSF April 22, 2009, 8:22 pm
  • Liriano looks great early.

    SF April 22, 2009, 8:25 pm
  • Depth.
    Sweet, sweet sweet depth.

Green letters, green hats, green numbers.

    SF April 22, 2009, 8:29 pm
  • Jeff Bailey drinks your milkshake!

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 8:29 pm
  • Wow. So much for “looking great”. Jekyll/Hyde work from Liriano.

    SF April 22, 2009, 8:30 pm
  • And good news so far from Montreal!

    SF April 22, 2009, 8:32 pm
  • Youk flashes the 3b leatha!!!

    SF April 22, 2009, 8:34 pm
  • I really like the movement that Penny’s pitches have.
Line drive double play ends the inning!

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 8:38 pm
  • Not a homerun, but an opposite-field double will do!

    Atheose April 22, 2009, 8:44 pm
  • I need to post about opposing pitchers’ abilities more often.

    SF April 22, 2009, 8:52 pm
  • That ball was RIPPED by Morneau, and now Kubel almost duplicates. Penny is not fooling them this time around the lineup. Get someone up, Tito, nobody was used in the afternoon game…

    SF April 22, 2009, 8:59 pm
  • It honestly looks like the Sox are wearing St. Patty’s Day uniforms (from Spring Training?!) for Earth Day just because they are green – looks like a huge shamrock on the sleeve, I just noticed.
    Fashion police!!!

    SF April 22, 2009, 9:01 pm
  • E6, 5-2 Sox. Yuck.

    SF April 22, 2009, 9:02 pm
  • Egads, Delmon Young just crushed one that Ellsbury makes a heckuva run to get. I think best-case is Penny gets through the bottom of the lineup, maybe goes 5, possibly into the sixth, then turns it over to the bullpen. He’s not fooling them.

    SF April 22, 2009, 9:04 pm
  • Ok, through 3.5. A little damage, but seems like it could have been worse (or better, NIck Green?). Penny’s curve looks really good, it’s his fastball which is coming hard, but very flat, no movement it doesn’t seem.

    SF April 22, 2009, 9:09 pm
  • Green doubles, pushing Bailey to third. Nobody out. Gardenhire needs to rescue Liriano at some point. Or is he taking one for the team? Seems foolish considering Liriano’s arm issues.

    SF April 22, 2009, 9:12 pm
  • Ells goes to the right side, good hitting, grounds to second but ups the lead back to four.

    SF April 22, 2009, 9:12 pm
  • Pedro flies to left, sac fly. Two runs right back at ya, 7-2. Penny’s leash grows a little.

    SF April 22, 2009, 9:13 pm
  • Great call from Orsillo: “Liriano’s throw is high, but Morneau is tall”, on Ortiz’s ground out.

    SF April 22, 2009, 9:14 pm
  • In case y’all hadn’t heard, the Bruins are good.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 22, 2009, 10:05 pm
  • The Sox beat up Liriano in Fort Myers. And he’s about to go to 0-4. At least his ERA is better than Wang’s.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 22, 2009, 10:07 pm
  • A 7-3 Red Sox winner. Winning Streak is 7. Another 3-win day for Boston.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 22, 2009, 10:28 pm
  • going into the yankees series tied with them at one back. I know it’s early but this is getting fun.

    rootbeerfloat April 22, 2009, 10:42 pm
  • Most stress-free doubleheader ever.

    Devine April 22, 2009, 11:41 pm
  • I take full responsibility for this win: Liriano is on my fantasy team. The minute I bench him he’ll throw a few no-hitters. FML.

    Atheose April 23, 2009, 7:16 am
  • Ath –
can you bench Beckett this weekend?
