Don’t Forget A-Rod!

I don’t know, if Derek Jeter were having a fundraiser to benefit his “Family Foundation,” my guess is it probably wouldn’t be a night of gambling at a club owned by a notoriously pimped-out rapper. And then there’s A-Rod, who feted his own do-gooder organization with a poker tournament at Jay-Z’s Club 40-40 last night. Okay, so he’s no genius at the art of political theater. But at least he’s saying the right things, to wit:

My choice is to play for the New York Yankees. It’s my choice. I love being a Yankee. I believe we’re going to win with me being a Yankee.

Alright. We can now return to our discussion of how the Sox are the new Yanks, spending-wise. Enjoy!

  • With just a quick little trip to googleville, you’ll easily find that A-Rod loved being a Ranger and a Mariner too. Interestingly enough, when asked he said he was going to win with both of those teams, and that he wasn’t going anywhere. Both times.
Trust me, NY should never, ever trade this guy, but believing what he says about what he wants to do is, well, not believable.

  • Can’t you YFs stop OBSESSING about A-Rod?
    ;-)

  • It’s not like there’s a reasonable replacement for ARod. Especially now that ARam is out..

  • Mike Lowell for Mariano Rivera, straight up. Let’s get it done!

  • Mike Lowell and Manny for Mo and ARod? ;)

  • It’s amazing how consistently unlikeable A-Rod is.
Every time things quiet down, he says something vain and clumsy like “I believe we’re going to win with me being a Yankee.”

  • Zito To The Dreaded Red Sox?, …say it ain’t so!
You want Zito to fall into the hands of the dreaded Sawx? I sure as helll don’t!
What’s with most of you people lately? You’re starting to scare me. FORGET about the fact that we haven’t won the WS lately! This Wild Crad playoff series was deisgned to maintain parity. It’s extremely difficult to just breeze through all those playoff games regardless of how good you are! It’s *getting* to the playoffs that matters. Because if you don’t GET there you can’t win there. And what the Bombers have accomplished so far this offseason by NO means tells me Cashman wants to win the ’07 Pennant. These 4 acquisitions we made so far this offseason do not contain one SP who can help us in ’07.
The fact remains we HAVE been in the postseason so often BECAUSE we spent oodles of money. And that’s why Boston has just copied our pattern. We CANNOT stop buying big names! If we don’t get Zito, or at the very least Clemens, you can kiss ’07 goodbye. You might as well anoint the Sawx ’07 pennant winners right now!
    Spend or die, dammit!

  • Amen, doc.
    :-P

  • It has been rumored that the dreaded Sawx are considering Zito, yes. But that’s not the entire point. What IS clear is that the Sawx fully intend to spend BIG money because the Yanks have proven that spending big money *does* buy success. Spending big money has gotten us into the Playoffs how many yrs in a row now? When I hear cheapo idiots complaining about all the FA’s George has bought us it makes me sick. We’ve had 100% success with these FA’s in terms of making the postseason. Geeeees, what else do you people want?

    Doctor Steve November 16, 2006, 2:00 pm
  • Why wait till the Sawx can consider Zito? Grab him now! A. That forces the Sawx to spend more on D-Mats, and B. We get Zito and they don’t. Time is of the essense here. We must break the backs of the Sawx vis a vis emotions. We must stem the tide. We must srcew with their heads as they have just screwed with ours. This is NO time to be cheap! SPENDING is what has gotten us all these playoff appearances, has it not?

  • Say it ‘aint so, Doc! The prognosis is so bleak! What are we to do? Oh my god, the sun is falling!

  • ESPN radio in Boston is reporting that Daisuke Matsuzaka has been signed for $45 million over 3 years.
51M to get his rights, another 45M for 3 years of service. 32M per year

  • It sounds like Dr. Steve needs a doctor himself, to cure him from hearing the voices that tell him the Sox are going to land Zito. Is it too much to ask our visitors to actually engage in original thought instead of just copying and pasting their own (presumably self-identified) wisdom from other blogs?
Nevertheless, I think two Boras clients seeking$15M-plus per season are enough for one winter, thanks.

    Paul SF November 16, 2006, 3:59 pm
  • That’s ludicrously fast, and ludicrously high. I doubt the veracity of the report — you sure it wasn’t someone saying, “I think this is what might happen”?

    Paul SF November 16, 2006, 4:00 pm
  • Ya, we’ve been throwing those numbers around for awhile. Well, I guess haley just reports it, but that’s really fast (perhaps unnecessarily?)
Also, that number seems to be like, the “worst-case” scenario in terms of pricing for me.. I expected something around 12 mil for 3 years, and 15 mil for 4 years, or somewhere in between. I guess that would be somewhere in between, but still insanely high.. but then it’s Boras, so it wouldn’t surprise me either way..

  • Brad, the saying is the sky is falling, not the sun is falling. The sky. Damn your a half brained idiot.

    Frank November 16, 2006, 8:21 pm
  • Frank – what’s it matter what’s falling? Can’t I say whay I damn well want? Also, before claiming anyone is an “idiot”, please make sure the structure of your own sentence (s) doensn’t bite you in the ass. See, normally I would never be the grammar police, but since I’ve never, ever seen you post on here (and I’ve been around awhile), I have to assume you’re trolling around looking for ways to make yourself feel better. Hey, I hoped it worked for ‘ya!
