Yesterday the Sox say they got their men (of course they did, who would admit otherwise!?). The Yankees got theirs (four players we already dislike, and we haven’t ever heard of them!). Today the picking resumes.
The Sox continue a run of right handed pitchers. With their first pick today, they take Christopher Province, from Southeastern Louisana University. Province is 6’4, 220. MLB’s draft tracker offers no comment. Their next pick is William Middlebrooks, also a RHP (though may project as a 3B), 18 years old, and MLB.com offers this:
A legitimate two-way player, Middlebrooks got scouted as both a pitcher and infielder. While he throws up to 94 mph, most see his future as a position player, probably at third base. He’s got obvious arm strength and is a tremendous athlete who also was a football standout. At the plate, he’s got some serious power potential with the kind of frame teams like to see from a future run producer at the hot corner.
The Yankees take Adam Olbrychowski, a 19 year old RHP out of Pepperdine, 6-2, 180. No notes from MLB. His bio is here:
Hmmm. Looks like these guys may have been picked yesterday, though MLB’s drafttracker seems to indicate they are Day 2ers. Oh well. Draft resumes in an hour at 1130, so ignore my trackings of old news.
yeah, SF, they were picked yesterday. I’ve hear that the Middlebrooks pick could be a steal for the Sox.
Sox take Jaren Matthews from DBP. Good luck to him, he’s a NJ kid from one of our rival schools. Big bat, took BP for some Yankee scouts at the stadium the same day they played Seton Hall Prep and Porcello in the states and put a few balls in the upper deck.
Jaren Matthews Should Do well he has alot of potential and should advance good pick for the sox get the good ones young.
Saw the Matthewsd kid last weekend in Long Island PG Tournament. Young Matthews hit two hit, I think he is a summer follow who might get some big bucks
The Matthews kid was worked out in Fort Meyers on Thursday. The kid hit three homers last week during the 18u BCS Tournament. Ben Cherington was there to watch him and Rizzo. The Red sox have to sign the Matthews kid as he has all the tools to advance and make it to Fenway.
Rizzo and Matthews: Both are good talents, Rizzo can only play 1B, Matthews is a plus plus defender at 1B, average in the outfield. Rizzo is a plus power kid now projected to be a 60 to 70, Matthews is a 50 power kid that projects to a 60 power player. I had the chance to watch both last week in Fort Meyers and think the Sox will make a run at only one as they both are asking in excess of $500k.
