  • After the pitching has been the story in this series so far, how about a two-homer game from Manny today?

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 12:29 pm
  • I feel pretty good about this game, although apparently all of Bannister’s wins are in day games (like today) and all of his losses are in night games. If that pattern continues this may well be a pitcher’s duel.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 12:49 pm
  • pale blue eyes (nice VU ref, BTW)
I was really hoping he’d hit #500 at Fenway this homestand. But at this point I’d settle for a base hit, he’s really struggling.
    Manny not being Manny

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 1:05 pm
  • I’d love to see Manny get 2 HR today. I’d hate to see him hit 500 on the road.
Not liking the sound of Bannister’s splits, Micah.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:36 pm
  • …and we’re off!

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 1:38 pm
  • K for Daisuke! Good way to start things off.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:39 pm
  • wtf, gameday shows ball 2 to Grudz right down the middle. Stupid umps!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:41 pm
  • Two-out walk. Sigh. C’mon, Dice-K, throw strikes; I’d like more than five innings tonight.
Random aside: man, my fantasy team’s turned into a juggernaut – I think I’ve led the entire league in points three of the last four weeks and it looks like I have a chance to do it again this week (though you may give me a run for my money, Atheose).

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 1:45 pm
  • Wild pitch, RISP now. Ugh.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:45 pm
  • Wild Pitch for Daisuke

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 1:46 pm
  • Daisuke is doing a great job of getting ahead of hitters–he’s had every batter at an 0-2 or 1-2 count so far, with the exception of the walk.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:46 pm
  • God dammit.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 1:47 pm
  • F*CK

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:47 pm
  • 1-0 KC
    damn.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 1:47 pm
  • Nothing pisses me off more than 2-out walks. Except for 2-out walks that end up biting you in the ass.
    Ugh, ANOTHER 2-out walk.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:49 pm
  • Another walk – come ON. At this rate he’s going to be out of there in three or four innings.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 1:49 pm
  • Daisuke going for 38 pitches in the first inning.

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 1:49 pm
  • 2nd walk of the inning…gulp

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 1:50 pm
  • Hey all, I can’t actually watch the game since I’m not near a TV, so I’m curious: does Cash catching Dice-K seem to have any visible effect (ie, shaking off more pitches, etc)? When I saw the line-up, I kind of wrote off the game, in part for that reason. Was that completely foolish on my part?

    stuck working May 22, 2008, 1:51 pm
  • Im only on Gameday here at work stuck, so I have no idea what’s going on. Didn’t even notice that Cash was catching until you mentioned it.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:52 pm
  • 34 pitches in the first, not great

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 1:52 pm
  • 34 pitches… Ugh.

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 1:52 pm
  • That’s a classic Dice-K inning if I ever saw one – no short at-bats, 34 pitches, two walks, two strikeouts, and a two-out meltdown that led to a run.
Ugh. I hope KC comes out swinging in the second. And that Bannister’s day/night splits don’t carry over to tonight’s game.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 1:53 pm
  • Er, today’s game. Now would be a great time for Manny to break out.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 1:53 pm
  • After swinging early during both Lester’s and Masterson’s games, I bet their hitting coach has been screaming at them to be more patient.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:54 pm
  • Meanwhile, Jacoby sees 2 pitches.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:55 pm
  • Cash is a pretty good catcher, so I think writing off the game because he’s in there could be a bit extreme, to say the least.

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 1:56 pm
  • Wow, apparently it’s the “All Bannister, all fastball” show today.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:56 pm
  • 9 straight fastballs, and then the slider finally gets Pedroia out.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 1:58 pm
  • Take a walk sometimes, Dustin.
Sigh. 12 pitches for Bannister. This is not going to be our day.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 1:59 pm
  • “This is not going to be our day.”
Wow, guys, come on, one inning in to the game!

    Anonymous May 22, 2008, 2:00 pm
  • me

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 2:00 pm
  • Interesting point raised in the SoSH game thread – Dice-K is going on four days of rest here after he and Wake both threw in the double-header. Why not start Wake today instead, and give Dice-K his normal five days, where he’s been much more effective?

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:01 pm
  • Yeh, a bad first is not nearly enough to make me think it’s not our day.
    Especially against the Royals.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:01 pm
  • Gload does us a favor and sees only 2 pitches. A few more at-bats like that and Daisuke will be looking a little better.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:01 pm
  • Ahh, don’t mind me, I go into “we’re doomed” mode way too easily. Even I don’t take myself seriously. :)

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:02 pm
  • Another walk. Ugh. 20 strikes, 22 balls is NOT a good ratio.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:03 pm
  • I read somewhere that the Sox wanted to try to keep Daisuke going every 5 days to get him more adjusted to the 5-man rotation. Can’t remember where I saw that though.
Also, Daisuke is a far better pitcher than Wake. Pitching him ahead of Wake here could mean an extra start over the course of the season.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:03 pm
  • 3 walks in 1= innings however…

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:03 pm
  • Speaking of predicting doomsday by the first inning, where’s Dio these days?

    rootbeerfloat May 22, 2008, 2:04 pm
  • I’m not being pessimistic about the game exactly — it’s more like I wouldn’t be so crushed if they lost.
For one thing, they already won the series and they’re at some disadvantage in this game for reasons mentioned above (DiceK on short rest and adjusting to a more unfamiliar catcher, Manny slumping and announcing he’s planning on breaking 500 HR on the road, etc).
For another, I like Bannister. I’ll try to dig up the link later, but he’s tried to apply sabermetric principles to his own pitching with some interesting results.

    stuck working May 22, 2008, 2:05 pm
  • okay, got out of the second without giving up any more runs.
    c’mon Manny!

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:07 pm
  • I like Bannister a lot too – he seems like one of the smartest pitchers in baseball and it’s always nice to see guys really embracing sabermetrics. But I’d rather he failed miserably against us. :)
Four-pitch strikeout to keep the pitch count under 50 – that’s better. Now if he can just stop walking people…

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:07 pm
  • Another K, Daisuke out of trouble. 49 pitches after 2. If you wanna be 8-0 you’ve gotta go 5 innings, Daisuke!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:08 pm
  • Probably not going to be a complete game from Daisuke. But me being a glass half-full guy today, I think we’re still in it.

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 2:08 pm
  • stuck working
Dave O’Brien mentioned that in the radio broadcast.
Apparently Bannister had good sabermetric reasons to explain his day/night splits.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:09 pm
  • HAHA Gameday doesn’t have a picture for Manny.
Daisuke isn’t pitching on short rest, stuckworking. Just want to clarify that.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:10 pm
  • Manny gets a leadoff single. Let’s go Mikey and Youk!

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:10 pm
  • infield single for Manny
like i said earlier, I’ll take what I can get!

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:11 pm
  • Manny has an infield hit?
It’s getting chilly down here in hell.

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 2:11 pm
  • Two on, nobody out! Let’s do something with this.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:12 pm
  • Lowell with a single.
    1 & 2, no outs

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:12 pm
  • Back-to-back singles! Yeah!
I still feel wierd about seeing Youk batting 6th. I’ve always thought of him as a get-a-walk-in-front-of-Ortiz sort of guy, not the homerun hitter he has become this season.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:13 pm
  • 3 straight hits

    Polf May 22, 2008, 2:13 pm
  • ANOTHER single! Bases loaded for Drew, Cash and Lugo.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:13 pm
  • Youk singles!
    loaded up for Drew.
Get it in the air at least, JD!

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:13 pm
  • Okay, JD – pretend this is Fausto Carmona in the ALCS!

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:14 pm
  • Oops, misread the earlier comment. Thanks for the correction, Atheose. I ought to be paying more attention to the game thread and less to my work!

    stuck working May 22, 2008, 2:14 pm
  • Grand Slam from Drewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

    Polf May 22, 2008, 2:15 pm
  • DREW!!!!!!

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:15 pm
  • HOLY SHIT!!!!

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 2:15 pm
  • Well done, J.D.

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 2:15 pm
  • In play, run(s)! DREW HITS A GRANNY!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:15 pm
  • Hey Micah, good job calling it!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:16 pm
  • DREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!
    He did what I said!

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:16 pm
  • how you feeling about the game now, Micah ;)

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:16 pm
  • HAHAHA Cash goes back-to-back!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:17 pm
  • Wait nevermind, Gameday lied to me.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:18 pm
  • By which you mean he struck out. ;)
Pretty good, RiceLynnEvans. Pretty good. :)

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:19 pm
  • good thing I sat Bannister today. heh

    ponch - sf May 22, 2008, 2:19 pm
  • another single

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:19 pm
  • Christ. I dropped Drew from my fantasy team YESTERDAY. My retardo fantasy team, which counts grand slams as a category. I want to die.

    Jackie (SF) May 22, 2008, 2:20 pm
  • Lugo CS

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:22 pm
  • Lugo caught stealing. At least now if Ellsbury gets on base he can steal 2nd without anyone in front of him.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:22 pm
  • That SUCKS, Jackie!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:23 pm
  • Ellsbury walks.
entering the game he has a .390 OBP

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:23 pm
  • Lugo, not content to actually succeed at baseball (however briefly), gets himself thrown out. Jacoby proceeds to walk – TAKE NOTES, DUSTIN.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:24 pm
  • Come on Jacoby, steal 2nd!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:24 pm
  • well, Lugo was probably ticked off that there was nobody on first base when he came up, thus denying him hitting into his daily double play

    ponch - sf May 22, 2008, 2:24 pm
  • I imagine Jacoby’ll be running if he gets a chance.
    He’s the g*damn Flash!
    Now 2-0 on Pedroia too.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:25 pm
  • A .390 OBP is fantastic for someone with the speed of Ellsbury. I’m very pleased with that, despite his average being below .300.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:25 pm
  • damn. sounds like a good play by the 3b

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:26 pm
  • Yup. I am terrible at fantasy baseball – too impatient. Oh well, at least it’s positive for the Sox. ;)

    Jackie (SF) May 22, 2008, 2:26 pm
  • Dustin not doing so well on the slider today.
And Bannister, after a 12-pitch first inning, has matched Dice-K’s pitch count through 2.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:26 pm
  • I’m kind of annoyed Ellsbury didn’t try to steal, especially when the count moved to 2-2. If you steal it successfully, fantastic. If not, then Ellsbury leads off the 3rd. Now Papi has to lead off, with no one on base in front of him.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:27 pm
  • And Bannister, after a 12-pitch first inning, has matched Dice-K’s pitch count through 2.
And more importantly, has quadrupled Daisuke’s runs allowed this game!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:28 pm
  • Okay, Daisuke, you’ve got the lead.
    THROW STRIKES PLEASE

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:28 pm
  • Goddamnit Daisuke, attack the strikezone! Lead-off walks are BAD!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:29 pm
  • Walk #4 for Daisuke. Ugly.

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 2:30 pm
  • Atheose
Ellsbury did run on the pitch that Pedroia hit to the 3B
    Another walk…ugh!

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:30 pm
  • Leadoff walks are NOT HOW YOU RESPOND TO BEING GIVEN A THREE RUN LEAD, DAISUKE.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:30 pm
  • Whew, Gordon pops up on 2 pitches. Time for a GIDP please.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:30 pm
  • Ahhh, thanks for the info Rice.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:31 pm
  • Daisuke is halfway to his career high in walks.

    SoxFan May 22, 2008, 2:31 pm
  • Or a 3-pitch K! I’ll take that too!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:32 pm
  • See, that’s much better. Two pitch popup, three pitch strikeout. C’mon, one more.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:32 pm
  • Every time I watch DiceK pitch, I am reminded of that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup commercial with the elderly couple. “Nibble, nibble nibble.” (link, if it’s allowed: http://youtube.com/watch?v=PdtaThCpyPM)
    THROW A F*CKING STRIKE!!

    Jackie (SF) May 22, 2008, 2:32 pm
  • And of course it took me so long to find the youtube that he got two outs on 5 pitches in the meantime.

    Jackie (SF) May 22, 2008, 2:34 pm
  • DiceK is shaking off Cash a lot

    Polf May 22, 2008, 2:35 pm
  • Damnit Teahan, stop fouling off pitches and pop-out already!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:35 pm
  • Or walk. That too.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:35 pm
  • Is he really going to walk eight again? Really? Jesus H. Christ on a pogo stick.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:36 pm
  • OH THANK GOD Olivo is out on the first pitch.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:36 pm
  • 5 walks now. Only 3 to tie your record, Dice-BB!

    SoxFan May 22, 2008, 2:36 pm
  • And he gets a flyout to end the inning. No way he goes more than 5 today, though, unless the Royals suddenly start swinging at every first pitch (like that).

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:37 pm
  • Yeah, more than 5 innings looks unlikely today. Good thing our bullpen is well rested thanks to Masterson and Lester!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:39 pm
  • Booo, this ump is inconsistent according to Gameday. Strike 2 to Manny was the same pitch as ball 1.
And he K’s in the end.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:42 pm
  • Manny is 2nd in strikeouts in the AL?!?

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:42 pm
  • Mikey! I knew there was a reason I named my fantasy team after that man’s goatee!

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:43 pm
  • Hey, Lowell doubled to right field for once!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:43 pm
  • I don’t trust gameday’s pitch location at all
    GR double for Lowell

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:43 pm
  • YOOOOOOOOUK!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:46 pm
  • Base hit for Youk
    Lowell scores from 2nd

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:46 pm
  • Manny went a round for his strike out

    Polf May 22, 2008, 2:46 pm
  • I like Youkilis.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:46 pm
  • Damn, JD almost went yard again according to Gameday.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:47 pm
  • Wow, the first 3 of our lineup have have no hits, runs or RBI’s. And we’re STILL winning 5-0 in the 3rd. It’s always nice to get production from everyone.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:48 pm
  • Yeah, Gameday shows that fly-out as RIGHT up against the wall. Anyone see the video on that?

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:49 pm
  • Drew’s fly out was just in front of the wall in centre

    Polf May 22, 2008, 2:50 pm
  • I need to program a macro into this computer so I can press a key and it can spit out “THROW STRIKES DAMMIT” for the purposes of all of Dice-K’s starts. Luckily Gload popped out.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:51 pm
  • Youk ranks 2nd in the league in average, 5th in homeruns and 4th in RBI’s.
Holy crap, a 6-pitch inning from Daisuke!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:52 pm
  • In play, out(s) does not mean ‘double off the Green Monster’. Stop lying to me, Gameday!

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:52 pm
  • Wait, WTF? Gameday said “In play, out(s)” (and still says it in the log of Gathright’s at-bat) but he doubled? LAME!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:53 pm
  • Apparently Gameday has an overly optimistic view on Manny’s defensive abilities, Micah

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 2:53 pm
  • Haha Micah, glad I’m not the only one who was fooled by Gameday.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:54 pm
  • Daisuke was obviously flustered by Gameday’s lies, and gives up a single to DeJesus.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:55 pm
  • 2 outs on 5 pitches. And then he spoils it again! But gets out of it!

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 2:56 pm
  • Grudz grounds out, inning over. I got a little worried there.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 2:56 pm
  • DiceK 81 pitchers through 4 innings. Grrrrr

    Polf May 22, 2008, 2:56 pm
  • And he gets out of it, again.
You know, I think the difference between this year and last year is that Dice-K actually gets himself OUT of the jams he gets himself into instead of having his Bad Inning. But my god, is he still frustrating to watch.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 2:56 pm
  • Matsuzaka gets through an entire inning without a walk! Huzzah. Now he gets his “Dice-K” nickname back.

    SoxFan May 22, 2008, 2:57 pm
  • DiceK must be going for some bizarre record, the most men left on base by a 20 game winner in a single season

    Polf May 22, 2008, 2:59 pm
  • Bunt single for Lugo

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:01 pm
  • “DiceK must be going for some bizarre record, the most men left on base by a 20 game winner in a single season”
As long as he actually leaves them on base, I’m good with that.

    rootbeerfloat May 22, 2008, 3:03 pm
  • Is Gameday freezing for anyone else?

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:04 pm
  • Lugo miles out at the plate

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:06 pm
  • damn!
    Lugo thrown out at home.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:06 pm
  • Why in the HELL did Lugo try to score there? Jesus, he’s run into two outs on the basepaths already.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 3:06 pm
  • 3rd base coach sent Lugo home

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:08 pm
  • Lugo’s had some really bad base-running this month. Yeesh.

    stuck working May 22, 2008, 3:08 pm
  • 0-2 and then four straight balls. Frustrating does not even describe it.

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 3:11 pm
  • Wild pitch follows a walk from DiceK

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:11 pm
  • Gameday finally comes back, and I see that it’s now 5-2. Ugh.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:14 pm
  • Assuming Daisuke wins this game: has there ever been a pitcher who started the season 8-0 and led the league in walks at the same time?

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 3:16 pm
  • Make that 5-3 Ath

    rootbeerfloat May 22, 2008, 3:17 pm
  • CRAP, another double. 5-3 now. Coaching visit to the mound, but Daisuke left in. PLEASE just get through the 5th!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:17 pm
  • Aardsma warming up in the pen

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:18 pm
  • Gameday works fine for me (except for the lying of course).
I know I’m being hard on Daisuke, but right now I guess we should be worried that he’s trying to lead the league in doubles as well.

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 3:18 pm
  • Wow a strikeout from DiceK

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:19 pm
  • I must say, I like the video highlights that are available in gameday!

    DW (SF) May 22, 2008, 3:21 pm
  • Oh thank goodness Daisuke strikes him out to end the inning.
    5IP, 5H, 3ER, 6BB, 6K

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:22 pm
  • DiceK and Cash are not on the page, Cash is getting frustrated, he just stuck his hands out asking what do you want to throw

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:23 pm
  • hell of a pitching line on Dice-k. Looks more like one from Nuke Laloosh

    ponch - sf May 22, 2008, 3:25 pm
  • another K for Manny. :(

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:27 pm
  • Teks putting on his pads in the dugout

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:28 pm
  • Polf
That’s very interesting. I wonder if Tito feels Daisuke’s struggles are due in part to Cash?

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:28 pm
  • Cash still had his pads, looks like Tek’s going down to the pen

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:29 pm
  • 1-2-3 go the Sox
Now I wonder who’s coming out behind the plate…

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:29 pm
  • WHY THE F*CK IS DAISUKE STILL IN THE GAME?!?!?!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:34 pm
  • Man, why on EARTH is DiceK out there? With his pitch count and the way he’s throwing, this makes no sense.

    stuck working May 22, 2008, 3:34 pm
  • This makes zero sense. Daisuke has gotten progressively worse: 2 walks in the 3rd, a single and double in the 4th, and 2 doubles and a single in the 5th. Is Grady Little pinch-coaching for Tito today?

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:36 pm
  • Grady Little has obviously taken over Francona’s body. This is the only explanation why Daisuke is still in there.

    SoxFan May 22, 2008, 3:37 pm
  • I really think DiceK needs to spend sometime with a good sports psychologist, to sort his head out with all this nibbling he does

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:38 pm
  • FINALLY Lopez comes in.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:38 pm
  • Javy in. At least he hasn’t been scoring inherited runners with the same frequency as MDC or Oki.

    rootbeerfloat May 22, 2008, 3:39 pm
  • Daisuke’s out.
Amazingly, he’s still in line for the win, and cannot get the loss.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:39 pm
  • That’s the question Polf: is he purposfully nibbling at the edges, or is he missing due to poor command?

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:40 pm
  • Does anybody know if the Sox think Matsuzaka’s problems are mechanical (i.e. he can’t throw strikes) or mental (i.e. he doesn’t want to throw strikes and prefers to nibble)?

    SoxFan May 22, 2008, 3:40 pm
  • yeesh, next road trip is 10 games in 11 days. Why do the road trips seem to be so much longer than the homestands?

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:42 pm
  • Hey, Lopez did his job again! I can’t remember the last time he came in and didn’t. And his ERA is down to 2.95 now too!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:42 pm
  • I dunno Soxfan. He seemed to get ahead of most of the batters this game, and only THEN would start nibbling.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:44 pm
  • Drew with a single to right

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:45 pm
  • Cash with a single, Drew to 3rd
Can Lugo get 3 hits in one game?

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:46 pm
  • Cash with a single on the hit and run, Drew to third

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:46 pm
  • I’m too lazy to look back at who gave up on this game when he saw Cash in the line-up. ‘Fess up whoever – and then apologize to that poor guy!

    rootbeerfloat May 22, 2008, 3:46 pm
  • especially west coast trips… although they get the Mariners – who are absolutely horrid this year.

    DW (SF) May 22, 2008, 3:47 pm
  • Lugo doesn’t need a hit, just an RBI

    rootbeerfloat May 22, 2008, 3:47 pm
  • nope, but he gets it deep enough for the sac fly RBI

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:47 pm
  • Sac fly from Lugo, Drew scores

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:47 pm
  • Yeh, RBF, but i always prefer the base-knock to drive in the run. :)

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:48 pm
  • This games now had the Gobbler and the Nimbler wheres Batman when you need him

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:51 pm
  • And back from a meeting – let’s get a little more of a cushion out of this inning, please.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 3:52 pm
  • Look at it this way, RLE – he saved us the inevitable baserunning mistake to get himself out.
Dustin with the double! That’s more like it.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 3:53 pm
  • Thats all the Sox starters with a hit today

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:54 pm
  • RBI for Pedroia, 7-3!
    C’mon Papi

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:54 pm
  • Bad Papi! C’mon, Manny, don’t strike out again.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 3:55 pm
  • Come on Manny, here’s a chance for 499 right here.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:55 pm
  • okay, Ortiz fies out, time for #499, Manny!
    LOL, Micah

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:55 pm
  • Make ’em pay, Mikey.

    rootbeerfloat May 22, 2008, 3:56 pm

    shit.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:56 pm
  • The int walking Manny, to load the bases

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:56 pm
  • Or they can intentionally walk him.
I’m feeling the bases-clearing double, Mikey!

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 3:56 pm
  • you gonna let them disrespect you like that Mikey?

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:56 pm
  • oops, RBF beat me to it.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:57 pm
  • IBB? Sigh.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:57 pm
  • RBF – I think you’re referring to one of my comments at the beginning of the thread (giving up when I saw that Cash was in the line-up). But that was because I expected Dice-K to struggle without Tek catching, not (just) because of Cash’s bat.

    stuck working May 22, 2008, 3:57 pm
  • Slam Mikey

    Polf May 22, 2008, 3:57 pm
  • YEAH Mikey makes ’em pay! Another grand slam!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 3:58 pm
  • Agent Double-O Lowell!!!!
    2 grannys in one game!

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 3:58 pm
  • So the story today is indeed the hitting, just not Manny’s. Two grannies!!

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 3:58 pm
  • HOLY CRAP THIS IS INSANE!!!!!

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 3:59 pm
  • SW – Well, I guess you had a point about that. I agree that Dice-K seems a little too sensitive to mess with his routine too much.

    rootbeerfloat May 22, 2008, 3:59 pm
  • You know what? That’s better than what I suggested. I like that. I like that rather a lot.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 3:59 pm
  • Looks like a safe time to go get a cup of coffee before my next meeting.

    rootbeerfloat May 22, 2008, 4:00 pm
  • That was really silly:
Manny’s OPS vs LHP this season: .779
Lowell’s OPS vs LHP this season: .890

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:00 pm
  • Not being able to watch the game, I can only imagine that Youkilis struck out because he was laughing so hard about the Sox getting two grand slams in one game. Awesome.

    stuck working May 22, 2008, 4:01 pm
  • Guillen with a HR to left.
That would have made me nervous an inning ago.
    Not now though.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:03 pm
  • Well, it’s a good thing our lead jumped up to 8-runs, since Aardsma decided to serve one up to Guillen there.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:04 pm
  • Heh, Guillen and Teahen rhyme.
    yeh, it’s silly time.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:04 pm
  • Uhhh…

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:04 pm
  • Guillen and Teahen rhyme
    They also hit back-to-backs

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:05 pm
  • Ath- Are you actually watching it? Just curious, because if so, then both gamecast and fangraphs are f’d, and saying that it’s Hansen doing the “pitching”.

    QuoSF May 22, 2008, 4:06 pm
  • Woah, wtf just happened? At first it showed Aardsma in the game, and he gave up a homer to Guillen and then one to Teahen.
Now suddenly the screen goes blank and it shows HANSEN in the game, with a homerun given up to Guillen, a walk to Teahen, and then another homer to Olivo. Whoever is manning the Gameday for this game must be smoking crack.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:06 pm
  • Okay! Hansen’s not so good today. Get him out of there.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 4:06 pm
  • no they didn’t Atheose, but Teahen did just score.
    I don’t like Hansen.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:07 pm
  • Less Awesome: KC scoring.
Just confusing: MLB Gameday now has their HRs “sponsored by State Farm Insurance.”

    stuck working May 22, 2008, 4:07 pm
  • I’m watching Gameday, Quo.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:07 pm
  • Atheose, Gameday is just messing with you now, Olivo didn’t hit a homer either.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:07 pm
  • Yeah, it just fixed that too. Ugh.
And now they don’t have any speeds or anything on each pitch either.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:08 pm
  • Joe C tells us that no team has ever hit 3 slams in one game.

    I'm Bill McNeal May 22, 2008, 4:08 pm
  • Not only do I hate Hansen because he’s a world class d-bag, I think he sucks too and I love when he proves me right, I just with he was proving me right at AAA instead.
Back to Long Island with you, d-bag.

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 4:09 pm
  • All right, cool. Just didn’t want to get upset with Hansen if I shouldn’t have, or vice-versa with Aardsma.

    QuoSF May 22, 2008, 4:10 pm
  • Dudes, we need Hansen to be good.

    I'm Bill McNeal May 22, 2008, 4:10 pm
  • Don’t really doubt you Lockland, but what has made you so…strong about the “Hansen is a d-bag” angle?

    QuoSF May 22, 2008, 4:11 pm
  • No team has ever hit 3 Grannies in one game? Wow, I’m kinda surprised to hear that. And hey, if 3 men get on base and there are 2 outs, Manny could hit the next one!

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:12 pm
  • I think Lockland met Hansen in a bar once

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:12 pm
  • Hansen wants to be a closer eventually. No wonder he can’t cope with these low pressure situations.

pale blue eyes May 22, 2008, 4:12 pm
  • Why can’t we get Joey Gathright out? He was doing terribly coming into this series and yet he gets on base at least twice a game against us.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 4:12 pm
  • IBM: I think getting Oki and MDC straight would be more important, beneficial. I’d be comfortable with Aardsma in the 7th and 8th, too, if he weren’t like Daisuke and Lester with the walks.

    QuoSF May 22, 2008, 4:13 pm
  • Several social situations where I have been forced to be around him, he’s the kind of guy that treats all bartenders, valets, drivers, etc, like trash and is constantly all over women in totally inappropriate ways all the time. Don’t even get me started about how he treats attractive female bartenders.

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 4:13 pm
  • Lockland: None of that surprises me too much.

    Anonymous May 22, 2008, 4:16 pm
  • Am I the only one who expects all professional baseball players to be complete jerks? My expectations for baseball players are even lower than my expectations for most other pro athletes. And this doesn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the game one bit, actually.

    stuck working May 22, 2008, 4:16 pm
  • Usually it doesn’t bother me either, stuck working, but with this Red Sox team I feel like there’s a LOT of really good, really likeable guys (Ortiz, Lowell, Pedroia and his antics, Jacoby, Lester, etc). So Hansen being a douchebag kind of takes away from that a bit.
Honestly, I have a feeling he’ll be pitching somewhere else in a year or two. He just can’t seem to put it together.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 4:19 pm
  • Stuck Working…
I’m sure most of them are, but when you see it first hand, more than once, I just can’t let that slide.
Out of sight, out of mind, I suppose.

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 4:19 pm
  • FYI – The entire lineup has at least one hit today. I love that.

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 4:21 pm
  • sw,
I actually have a good story about pro athletes:
Jevon Kearse is back with the titans this season, and he came in to the restaurant I work at with a couple other players (one was Zach Piller, can’t remember the other) and their families. We have a busser in the mornings who has down’s, and is a HUGE Titans fan. He went up to the table just because he wanted to say hello, and they insisted that he sit down and hang out with them for about half an hour.

    QuoSF May 22, 2008, 4:22 pm
  • The entire lineup also has an OPS over .800 except for Pedroia (.745) and Lugo (.700) (yes, even Cash, though I’m sure he’ll come crashing back to earth). Wow.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 4:23 pm
  • Yeah, most of this Sox team seems to be very likeable. There was a story a year or two ago where a Red Sox fan came up to David Ortiz after a game and asked him if he’d help him propose to his girlfriend the next day. Ortiz agreed, and during batting practice the next day Ortiz met both of them by the dugout and let them come onto the field, before getting on one knee and saying “(So-and-so), will you marry John?” Funny stuff.
Lugo on thanks to an error. Does that help your OBP, getting on base thanks to an error?

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:23 pm
  • I think many of these atheletes have been coddled and kept insulated from life’s reality. giving them an entitlement issue – especially the ones gifted, I think it applies to all levels and all sports.

    DW (SF) May 22, 2008, 4:23 pm
  • No, Ath. It counts as if it was an out.
    Aardsma for the 8th?

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 4:24 pm
  • Quo, that’s a great story. Warms my heart to see athletes doing something GOOD just for the sake of doing something good. Kinda like how Wakefield visits the children’s hospital almost weekly, whereas other guys only go there if there’s a camera crew with them.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:24 pm
  • Exactly, Ath. Those are the best. Wake and Kearse and Piller have no obligation to do those things. Wake has other things he could do, I’m sure, and there would’ve been nothing wrong with the Titans’ guys being polite about saying they were there with their families and would talk to him a little later. But they choose to make the right decisions in those situations. It’s nice.

    QuoSF May 22, 2008, 4:26 pm
  • I loved the story about Mike Lowell delivering food to the people waiting out for World Series tix last October.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:28 pm
  • We actually have three of the competitors for “nicest guy in baseball” on our team this year – Wakefield, Casey and Ortiz.
Man, Aardsma has great stuff – wish his control was a bit better though.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 4:29 pm
  • When I lived in Texas we had season tickets to Rangers games, and after games he didn’t pitch in Nolan Ryan would go up to the edge of the stands and sign autographs for sometimes HOURS. He would smile and look each kid in the eye and just be all-around friendly with each of them, even though he had a warm bed and a hot meal waiting for him at home.
I guess there’s a reason I idolize him so much, lol.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:29 pm
  • Two infield hits in a row. Bleh.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 4:31 pm
  • Wow, at least our bullpen picked a good day to suck.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:32 pm
  • Ath: Nice. Hadn’t heard that about him specifically, though had generally heard that Ryan was a pretty good guy with basically just enough ego to be a successful ML-pitcher.

    QuoSF May 22, 2008, 4:32 pm
  • I cannot BELIEVE we are going to have to use Papelbon today. Jesus fuck.

    Micah-SF May 22, 2008, 4:35 pm
  • damn, 3-run homer for Olivo
unbelievably, this game is now a save situation!

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:35 pm
  • Oki up in the pen.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:35 pm
  • Nice to hear all the stories about some pro athletes being genuinely nice, good people. I just try not to expect that from them, though I agree — a lot of the Sox do seem like good guys.

    stuck working May 22, 2008, 4:36 pm
  • Yeah, the best thing about Nolan was that he kept all of his ego on the field. Scariest pitcher on the mound, nicest guy elsewhere.
And yeah, I know I sound a little gushy when talking about him but the two or three times I got autographs from him he always smiled and said a word or two and looked me in the eye. Most guys will just sign stuff and hand it back to you without even glancing up, you know?
Okay holy shit, this game is suddenly a save situation?

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:36 pm
  • Hansen + Aardsma = Serious suckage.
Oki is up in the pen, so don’t put anyone else on base.

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 4:36 pm
  • CRAP. How is this a game?

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 4:36 pm

At least he won’t be coming in with runners on.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:37 pm
  • Wow, Guillen and Olivo have 7 hits and 8 RBI’s today.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:37 pm
  • Ath – Not too gushy at all. And even that latter category of guys is more than some are willing to do.

    QuoSF May 22, 2008, 4:38 pm
  • Paps is up in the pen now.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:40 pm
  • There are also guys perceived as good guys, who really aren’t. There are some pretty interesting stories about Tek floating around out there.

    LocklandSF May 22, 2008, 4:41 pm
  • Yeah, good point Quo. I heard a quote from Ryan once, he said something along the lines of “I was given only two choices in life: to farm, or to pitch. Since God gave me the pleasure of playing baseball for a living the least I could do is thank the people that come out and cheer for me.”

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:42 pm
  • Hadn’t heard any of those about ‘Tek, Lockland. Care to share one?

    QuoSF May 22, 2008, 4:42 pm
  • Lockland, really?
The only story I’ve heard is the one about him giving out candy to his neighborhood on Halloween.
Okay, Manny, last chance for a homer this homestand (I hope!)

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:43 pm
  • damn.

    RiceLynnEvans May 22, 2008, 4:43 pm
  • Oh yeah Lockland? Like what?
I like Tek because he over-hustles. When he strikes out or grounds out he always hustles back to the dugout, instead of sulking. Very professional.

    Atheose May 22, 2008, 4:43 pm
  • Ath -agreed on that. Even when he disagrees with a called strike, he seems more polite and calm when asking the ump about it than anyone else.

    QuoSF May 22, 2008, 4:45 pm
  • Why, exactly, is Hansen still in the majors instead of Pawtucket?
He’s given up two or more runs in 4 out of 7 of his relief appearances this year (all one inning or less).
I assume the answer is that the alternative is even worse. Hard to imagine, though.

    Hudson May 22, 2008, 4:46 pm

Hansen, on the other hand, is a d-bag 100%, seen with my own two eyes.

  • And, uh, is the tying run really at the plate??

    Paul SF May 22, 2008, 4:52 pm
  • Funny, recently there was an article on ESPN.com about the feud between O-Cab and Renteria, and in that article it simply said that the Sox parted ways with O-Cab because he partied too much.

    Anonymous May 22, 2008, 4:52 pm
  • Yeah Rice, that was a pretty prominent rumour supported by a member of the team at the time, who remained anonymous. I think it was reported by the New York Post, go figure.
Okay, two baserunners allowed by Papelbon? Wtf? Close it out!

  • And that’s the game. That was a lot more stressful at the end than it should have been. Yeesh.

  • Hudson – Potential.

  • DiceK now at 8-0 with a 2.40 ERA.
Not too shabby, not too shabby at all…though those stats don’t tell the entire story.

  • The game itself was less than fun at times, but it was great fun (blowing off work and) enjoying the game with y’all.

  • Game over, and just in time for me to leave work. Great timing!
Have a good evening gentlemen, it was wonderful spending the afternoon talking/bitching/complaining with you.

  • Weird game. All’s well that ends well, though.

  • Potential is an ugly word in the case of Hansen because he’s never lived up to it despite a lot of chances.

  • I’m still stuck at work – I do live in LA, after all. I guess now I can actually get something done that isn’t ‘follow Gameday and bitch about the Sox’.
Our record is now what, 21-5 at home? So awesome.

  • 300 posts for a day game, during work hours. God Bless American productivity!

  • I like to think of it as American multi-tasking.

  • To add one more to the 300 posts: the Globe points out today that there have been fewer games with two grand slams by the same team than there have been no-hitters!
