Easy Like Sunday Morning: Snakes-Sox/Yanks-Padres Gamer III

Winning Peavy’s Sox debut yesterday against a very good pitcher was sweet. Today’s matchup is the best on paper for the Sox as veteran Brandon McCarthy (season ERA: 5.00) takes on rookie-plus Felix Doubront.

Ian Kennedy moved from the D-backs to the Padres at the trade deadline and faces his old team and old rotation-mate today in the Yankees and Hughes. Looks like it could be a slugfest, but Petco may dictate otherwise.

Enjoy the end of the weekend! And comment should today’s action move you to it.

  • McCarthy has thrown plenty of pitches, the Red Sox have had four base runners (2 BBs, 1 HBP, 1 E), but for some strange reasons McCarthy has a no hitter going through 3.

  • Papi flies out. No-hitter still intact. Do something about that, boys.

  • Finally my efforts to end the no-no pay off as Carp singles. Now runs, please.

  • And him hitting into a double play further endears him to me. Still scoreless middle of the fifth.

  • Pedey fouls off about a dozen pitches, or so it seems, and then hits an RBI double. 2-0 Sox. IBB for Papi follows.

  • Carp pops it up as well and the Sox miss a great chance to blow this thing open.

  • Good bunt by Holt. I hate the bunt regardless.

  • I mean, Holt got a hit last time up. Why not have him try again?

  • Harmless fly from Jacoby but Parra (who dropped one earlier) loses it and the Sox go up 3-0.

  • Orioles have taken the lead, Rays have tied it. All the more reason to win this!

  • Not that the other teams losing would not also be an excellent reason to win today.

  • Doubront not as sharp in the top of the 7th but he gets out of it unscathed. Probably done for the day.
