End of the Line for Bernie

Scott Boras reports that Bernie has rejected the Yankees Minor League contract offer, but is continuing to work out at home, lest an opportunity for a Major League position becomes available—read: should one of the Yankee OFs or DHs sustain injury. The window on Bernie returning to the Bombers is now all but shut. We’ve had our say on this drama, so we’ll leave it at this. Another story we’d rather not be dealing with right now.

  • On a cheerier note, the Cubs have come to an agreement with Zambrano for a nice amount for both sides, which means he’s probably not going anywhere this year. At least, that’s what I’d like to think.

  • I went to what many thought might be Bernie’s last home game in 2005. He got a standing ovation every time he came up.
If 2007 doesn’t work out, and it looks like it won’t, I’ll go to the Bernie Day the Yanks will hold either this year or sometime in the future. Everyone knows what Bernie contributed.

on a serious note….will they retire paulie o’s number 21? i know they wont allow anyone to wear it, but it still has yet to be officially retired. you must give the ronaldinho of the outfield his props.

  • Bernie’s # yes.
Paulie O’s # no. Even though he was the heart and soul of those teams, I don’t think he was here long enough. Off the top of my head I can only think of Reggie and Roger Maris as far as guys who played elsewhere and still had their numbers retired.
