Fair or Foul?

“I’m very upset. He was a little late with the slide and I couldn’t go over the top. It’s part of baseball. I wasn’t trying to hit him.”—Alfredo Amezaga

“I don’t think he should have gone underneath like that. I thought he could have just gone over the top. I’m not saying he wanted to hurt him, but I thought it was unnecessary to do that.”—Joe Torre

“I don’t know why the kid had to get down that low. Last I remember, Jorge wasn’t a world-class sprinter. He wasn’t even that close to the bag.”—Paul Quantrill

“That’s nothing I can comment on, really.”—Brian Cashman

  • Big, fat Jorge can’t get down fast enough? Whose fault is that?
And of course the Yankees are going to be outraged, they always feel victimized, never take blame (see Clemens, Roger vs Piazza, Mike).
More seriously, it was a bit scary, and it seems like a massively bad convergence of events – Posada gets down a bit slowly, Amezega doesn’t go over the top, which maybe in retrospect he should have. But there didn’t seem to be intent there, just maybe some mediocre judgment on the part of the fielder, exacerbated by a lumbering runner. Shit happens.

  • Yeah, I guess the Sox are never outraged and never claim to be victims. Wait a second, I seem to recall some remarks peppered with the words “evil empire” and a lot of beef over some kind of blown-up deal during the offseason…give me a break please.

  • One question is, What’s going to happen tonight? Will there be retaliation? If I’m an Angel coming into second, I’d be quick to hit the ground, because we all know that Jorge’s best friend also happens to be the Yankee captain and shortstop.
As for Amezaga, the replay I saw showed a frankly Quisenberry-esque delivery. I don’t think he intended to hit Posada (and let’s remember that the ball did ricochet off Jorge’s hand—so it wasn’t thrown directly at his face), but this might well have been a young player doing a little bit too much to establish his rep.
    To be continued???

  • Ummm…Yanks and Lieber already beat the Angels today 7-4. Bernie went boom.
My thought on the play: just a horrible throwing attempt and no intent to harm.

  • JCL –
Humor, my friend. See the “more seriously” conclusion to my post, just to reiterate.
We agree on this one, your final comment and mine are in accord.
