Fin, Or Is It? Sox-Yanks Gamer 162

Raul Ibanez’ late-inning heroics kept the Yankees in the game and then another clutch moment by Raul kept the Yankees in control of their playoff destiny while the Red Sox were denied their consolation prize of playing the spoiler. If the Yankees win today or if Baltimore loses in Tampa today, they get the Division and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. If the Yankees lose and Baltimore wins, things get messy.

If the Yankees (94-67) lose today and Baltimore (93-68) wins, they will play a one-game playoff against each other for the Division, the loser of which would play one further game against Oakland (93-68) or Texas (93-68) to win one of the two wild card play-ins. The loser of that game goes home.

Oakland has won five in a row including the last two head-to-head with the Rangers to knot those teams with one game to play. The winner of today’s 12:35PT start at the Coliseum (Ryan Dempster, A.J. Griffin.. I’ll be watching that one) gets the West, and the loser gets the other wild card slot.

Regarding home field advantage, under the scenario where the Yankees lose and Baltimore wins today but the Yanks defeat Baltimore in a one game playoff for the Division, the Yankees would still get home field if either Texas wins (due to a 4-3 head-to-head record) or if Oakland wins (5-5 head-to-head record but the Yankees have a better intradivisional record).

If Baltimore wins today and goes on to beat the Yankees in a one-game playoff for the division, the winner of the west would get home field advantage as both have winning records against Baltimore. I don’t know why I am bringing up the fact that Detroit clinched days ago yet will finish with a worse record than the Rays and Angels. Hell, if the Yankees win and Baltimore wins, an awesome 94-win team will be sitting at home with no chance while an 87-win team goes to the Dance.

Anyway by game time, we will know the winner of the West, and will keep one eye cast towards Tampa as Chris Tillman starts for the Orioles, Jeremy Hellickson for the Rays at the Trop. As that plays out, Daisuke Matsuzka starts for Boston, Hiroki Kuroda for the Yankees in the last game of the Reggalar.

Comment away.

  • “…Hell, if the Yankees win and Baltimore wins, an awesome 94-win team will be sitting at home with no chance while an 87-win team goes to the Dance….”

that’s the downside of divisional play, ag…sure it enables pennant races, along with the various wild card scenarios, but this happens nearly every year…the wild cards mitigate it a bit by allowing teams in tough divisions to qualify for the playoffs even if they finish out of 1st but have superior records to other 2nd place finishers…nevertheless, it [the tiger scenario] still happens, as it did this year…a few days ago a friend of mine who is a “casual” tiger fan asked me to explain how the tigers could win the division, but not be in contention for a wild card ;) i tactfully explained to him that the tigers division was weak enough [see won/loss records] that every team in wild card contention, from the other 2 divisions would have a least a 5 game lead over the tigers….oh

Still, I don’t expect next year to be good, within 5 of .500 either way.

  • I am watching the A’s/Rags game…incredible.

5-1 Rags…now 8-5 A’s. The energy in that stadium is rowdy!

I never watch other games really, this one though is awesome.

Since September 15, Alex Rodriguez is hitting .231/.307/.231 with no extra-base hits, five RBI and seven runs scored in 16 games.

    krueg October 3, 2012, 9:46 pm
  • So crowd has celebrated with each home run but as there has been zero tension in this game, it’s actually a little sleepy. And just as I type that, curtis wakes them up again :). This is a bloodbath. The Sox are simply not a major league team right now. And Baltimore is about to make it official…

    IronHorse - YF October 3, 2012, 9:46 pm

Great job boys. You aren’t losers. You fought and fought and came out on top. NOW the real fun begins!!!!!

  • Bases loaded now again…

Man, this is a massacre. Pull all the starters and get some rest.

    krueg October 3, 2012, 9:58 pm
  • Now that was fun. And as they run videos of Yankees players and Girardi each thanking the fans for their support this year, ttthe fans go crazy, esp for Pettttitte and Ichiro…

    IronHorse - YF October 3, 2012, 9:59 pm
  • Suspense factor: will Granderson hit two more HRs and deny Cabrera the Triple Crown at the last moment?

    Devine October 3, 2012, 10:00 pm
  • Gotta pull everyone now..

    krueg October 3, 2012, 10:03 pm

  • NICE IH!!! Take some pictures!!!

    krueg October 3, 2012, 10:28 pm
  • I want the season to end so the pain will stop.
But I want to keep going because I want to see something, anything, to give me hope for next season.
Right now there’s little, if nothing, tanglble to hope for.
Sox will end the season with 8 straight losses, and 12 or 13.
Most of the members of this team here tonight is of the Triple-A variety. It’s such a comical mismatch.
We know Ortiz and Middlebrooks would have made a difference.
But the rotation is a disaster. There is little on the farm that could possibly make a difference next year. I have no idea how good the young former Dodgers pitchers really are. We have no idea who will manage.
I do believe Ben will make massive changes in the offseason. It starts with the rotation. Then it’s 1B, LF, a better bench, a closer (Tazawa?) and catcher?
    Un-MITT-igated disaster.
Worst of all, no Bruins to look forward to.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 3, 2012, 10:30 pm
  • I’m sorry YFs.
I’m too depressed to be happy for you.
    Forgive my selfishness.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 3, 2012, 10:32 pm
  • This afternoon, I actually wondered who would be more pissed off, SFs or YFs, if Matsuzaka came out tonight and pitched a beaut.
    I actually wondered that.
What the fuck was I smoking?

    I'mBillMcNeal October 3, 2012, 10:34 pm
  • It’s over.
    Why is Valentine still here?

    I'mBillMcNeal October 3, 2012, 10:38 pm
  • Thanks for depressing me about hockey IBM…what a fucking joke that whole situation is…

    BUT, for the Yankees…

    krueg October 3, 2012, 10:41 pm
  • Serious question.
In the age of sabremetrics, what should be the new triple crown?
    OPS, runs, what else?

    I'mBillMcNeal October 3, 2012, 10:47 pm
  • Ugh…I hate sabremetrics!!!!!!

    krueg October 3, 2012, 11:09 pm
  • I wonder if IH had some adult beverages????

    krueg October 3, 2012, 11:09 pm
  • > new triple crown

Good question. I don’t know of any three straight stats that could gain any traction, let alone applied stats.

    attackgerbil October 4, 2012, 8:55 am
  • This is where we are lost without Paul. It is interesting to follow a sport in which what is valued has substantially shifted.

    IronHorse - YF October 4, 2012, 9:06 am
  • Any stats that besmirch Jeter are garbage…

    krueg October 4, 2012, 10:50 am
  • Maybe Avg/HR/OPS+ would sit better with some folk. If you want to be annoyed by a counting stat, RBI is a good one to get your gander.

    attackgerbil October 4, 2012, 11:04 am
  • “If you want to be annoyed by a counting stat, RBI is a good one to get your gander.”

    A-Rod thanks you ag.

    IronHorse - YF October 4, 2012, 12:06 pm
  • I like one stat in particular…W’s. Period.

Oh, and # of rings is a good one too!
