  • Penny starting makes me a little queasy

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2009, 2:28 pm
  • was at the game last nite and cannot say enough about bards debut. his stuff was electric. he faced the heart of the angels lineup and made them look slow. i had angels fans in my section asking me all about the kid. hopefully theo/tito will have the guts to give the kid a legitimate chance to stick with the club for the remainder of the year.

  • Yuck, Penny already giving up hits.

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2009, 3:55 pm
  • something that keeps bugging me is, how many RBI would jason bay have if papi could hit his weight?

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 3:55 pm
  • tori hunter is quickly becoming a sox killer. he joins other such greats as vernon wells and carl crawford.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 3:59 pm
  • We probably need to ask Paul to do some sort of extrapolation….

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2009, 4:00 pm
  • LUGO!!!! What has this world come to?

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2009, 4:07 pm
  • I’m starting to hate Torii Hunter…

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2009, 4:36 pm
  • Did you know the league was OPSing .906 against Brad Penny before this game?
    3-2 Angels.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 4:36 pm
  • Penny cant manage to pitch an inning without putting runners on.

    Rob SF May 14, 2009, 4:45 pm
  • Tied again. Boy, this has been some series.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 4:48 pm
  • Glad to have Elf back in the line-up. Sort of puts the world back on the correct axis.

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2009, 4:50 pm
  • “Boy, this has been some series.”
this has been a series that has involved our AAA lineup and julio lugo DH-ing. boy do i miss youk.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 4:51 pm
  • “boy do i miss youk”
    and Papi. :(

    Devine May 14, 2009, 4:53 pm
  • Papi misses another great chance to get it going. Will it ever happen?

pale blue eyes May 14, 2009, 4:53 pm
  • I keep waiting for Ortiz to hit

    Rob SF May 14, 2009, 4:54 pm
  • That’s a great play by Drew on the fall-in blooper to gun him down at 2nd.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 4:57 pm
  • at what point do we give up on Papi? I hate to say it but a turnaround is looking less and less likely. I would very much like to be wrong about that.

    ponch - sf May 14, 2009, 4:58 pm
  • Who is this Lugo?

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2009, 4:58 pm
  • And Lugo with the great leap to grab the liner. Penny is a lucky SOB.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 4:59 pm
  • Ponch: end of June? I think Papi’s earned that much. You can drop him in the order a bit sooner than that, though.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 5:00 pm
  • theo- sing bay long term today. or deal with the yanks offering him $800,000,000 for 20 years this offseason.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 5:07 pm
  • c’mon, Papi, c’mon…..

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2009, 5:27 pm
  • *sigh*

    Devine May 14, 2009, 5:29 pm
  • it’s just painful to watch ortiz at the plate. 0-2 hole everytime. leaving runners in scoring position every at bat. it’s time to move him down the lineup starting tomorrow. even hitting fifth might make a difference.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 5:30 pm
  • A Vaughn-esque falloff for Ortiz. Wow.

    AndrewYF May 14, 2009, 5:31 pm
  • Not exactly, Andrew. At least Big Mo had the broken ankle as an excuse. But your larger point … yeah.
Radio says Angles fan has sign with Papi’s season HR total. Does that fan also have a sign with Abreau’s season HR total?

    I'mBillMcNeal May 14, 2009, 5:33 pm
  • I think when Youks proves healthy you drop Papi in the batting order.

    I'mBillMcNeal May 14, 2009, 5:34 pm
  • Typical Penny today. Nothing spectacular. He’s just good enough.

    I'mBillMcNeal May 14, 2009, 5:37 pm
  • The last two starts, Penny has stunk/gotten a bit lucky early in the game, then had a couple effective innings to close it out.
Yet another quality start of the 6 IP, 3 ER variety.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 5:40 pm
  • Ridiculously wide strike zone to get Bay on the 3-2.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 5:42 pm
  • what concerns me about ortiz is that fringe pitchers are just throwing to him. when the season started pitchers were sticking to the book on ortiz. low and in to tie him up. i hoped it was a timing thing and he’d work it out after a couple weeks. now they’re not even game-planning him. just chucking. he’s pressing hard and only digging a deeper hole by putting himself in behind in counts early.
none of this is good news with inter-league play looming. not sure you can sit lowell to put a glove on papi.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 5:47 pm
  • Penny trying to extend that quality start to even more respectable.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 5:47 pm
  • After 1 out, a triple for Aybar.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 5:51 pm
  • Forgot about interleague play, rod. I agree, there’s no way you sit Lowell or Youk if they’re both healthy and things stay the way they are with Papi.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 5:52 pm
  • Angels on top 4-3 after the sac fly on Bay’s diving catch.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 5:56 pm
  • I know he’s up for the loss, but Penny pitched really well today.

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 5:58 pm
  • Lugo 3 for 4.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:03 pm
  • Two on, two out for Pedroia.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:06 pm
  • Pedey!!

pale blue eyes May 14, 2009, 6:07 pm
  • Dustin Pedroia, destroyer of worlds. Tie fucking ballgame.

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 6:07 pm
  • So Penny deservedly will not be the losing pitcher!

pale blue eyes May 14, 2009, 6:07 pm
  • The little guy is 4 for 4, on base 5 times and just drove in the tying run in the 8th. Nice return game.
Ortiz with yet another big opportunity.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:08 pm
  • wow. hit and run with lugo on second. good call tito. beating the angels at their own game. welcome back pedroia.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:08 pm
  • Papi misses a homer by 5 feet. Grrrr.

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 6:08 pm
  • To the track…made me think about it for a second.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:08 pm
  • first pitch swinging ortiz. why even bother trying to see more pitches when you’ve already told the pitcher you’ll be flailing at whatever he throws.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:10 pm
  • Not bad – 0-5 for Ortiz today. Guess it could be worse . . . oh wait . . .

    am SF May 14, 2009, 6:10 pm
  • on second look that wasn’t a hit and run. lugo was on a straight steal of third. ellsbury wasn’t running at first.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:11 pm
  • Nice, quick reaction by Varitek to grab the bunt popup.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:12 pm
  • Coco woulda had it. God I hate Abreu.

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 6:14 pm
  • Ellsbury Abreu’s the play at the wall…on a ball hit by Abreu.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:15 pm
  • GUNNED DOWN AT HOME! FUCK YOU ABREU!

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 6:19 pm
  • DREW AMAZING PLAY TO GUN DOWN ABREU AT HOME!!!

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:19 pm
  • now that’s some fun baseball right there.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:20 pm
  • Crappity carp – my mlbradio jsut stopped working and I missed the play!

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2009, 6:20 pm
  • I mean, Drew’s momentum was taking him to left field. He made that throw on the run and threw him out easy.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:22 pm
  • Bay tries to hit it out, almost…

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:22 pm
  • Wow I thought it was gone when it left Bay’s bat.

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 6:22 pm
  • that’s 2 PO for drew today. could it be one of those days where the glove carries over to the bat and JD hits the game winner?

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:23 pm
  • Baldelli on-deck instead of Drew. Must have hurt himself throwing?
Lowell walks with 1 out, here’s Rocco.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:25 pm
  • just as i say that. rocco inserted for drew. now we wait to find out how hurt drew is.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:25 pm
  • Oh, maybe it’s the lefty thing.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:25 pm
  • radio guy’s saying drew looked fine running off the field. possibly a match up thing.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:26 pm
  • Green pinch-running for Lowell. Tito getting creative here.
Rocco singles. 2 on, 1 down.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:26 pm
  • hopefully tito knew something we didn’t. at least it paid off.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:27 pm
  • I don’t get the Drew substitution, but it happened to work… At least, Baldelli is on base. Just so long as Bailey doesn’t GIDP.

    Hudson May 14, 2009, 6:29 pm
  • can’t believe the money the angels threw at fuentes. a career NL soft tossing set up guy.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:29 pm
  • Bailey K’s. Tek up with 2 out.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:31 pm
  • Scheiser. Missed opportunity.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:32 pm
  • just looked at the numbers and rocco struck out in his only appearance vs. fuentes. makes me believe something is wrong with drew. drew had struck out in his only AB vs. fuentes as well.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:33 pm
  • Well, actually, it *didn’t* work — in that the Sox evidently needed a double, triple or home run from Drew’s spot in the order, since Bailey/Tek were up next. Grrr!

    Hudson May 14, 2009, 6:33 pm
  • Extras. Better get it done in the 10th, Sox…I got a dinner date!

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:37 pm
  • Francona tossed for arguing balls and strikes. Get your money’s worth Tito!

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 6:41 pm
  • Lugo lead-off double? Jizz in my pants.

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 6:42 pm
  • …and then promptly gets caught in a rundown.

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 6:43 pm
  • Ortiz with a big, big stinker of a game.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:46 pm
  • What a giant pile of blown opportunity, exacerbated by an amazing catch by Hunter to prevent a 5 for 5 day by the Elf.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:47 pm
  • another great at bat for ortiz. first pitch swinging. how can a ML hitter go up swinging everytime and expect to be productive?

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 6:47 pm
  • Bay reaches on the not-caught strike three.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:56 pm
  • Ugly bunt attempt. Green’s stance looks kinda like Bay’s.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:57 pm
  • DP. Boo. This is gonna be my last inning.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 6:59 pm
  • Good luck, boys. I hopes for good news later tonight, but expect the worst.

    Devine May 14, 2009, 7:00 pm
  • Papelbon getting squeezed.

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 7:08 pm
  • Hunter steals 3rd. Lame.

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 7:15 pm
  • LOB- 14 sox / 3 angels
david, i beg of you, redeem yourself right now.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 7:35 pm
  • Papo up..maybe with the bases juiced his magic returns

    Rob SF May 14, 2009, 7:35 pm
  • What a waste …

pale blue eyes May 14, 2009, 7:38 pm
  • Papi now 0-7 in the game with 3K’s. Perhaps it is time for management to have a talk with the big guy about taking a trip to Pawtucket to work on some stuff.
Bases loaded with 1 out and we cant score.

    Rob SF May 14, 2009, 7:39 pm
  • 17 LOB now…makings of a disaster

    Rob SF May 14, 2009, 7:40 pm
  • Sad loss, should have won that game

    Rob SF May 14, 2009, 7:48 pm
  • well that was a complete and utter waste of 4.5 hours.
we’ll be seeing a different lineup come tomorrow. hopefully one that still includes drew tho.

    sf rod May 14, 2009, 7:49 pm
  • Lugo is playing really well lately. Silver lining FTW.

    Atheose May 14, 2009, 11:32 pm
  • He has to move Ortiz out of that spot. There is no other option left now. If he doesn’t, he’s showing loyalty to Ortiz over the better good of the team. Move him down to sixth or seventh for awhile, and take some pressure off of him. I can’t handle seeing the bases jacked for him one more time just to watch him called out or ground out to first.

    Brad May 15, 2009, 9:42 am
  • The lineup I’d like to see:
    1. Ellsbury
    2. Pedroia
    3. Bay
    4. Lowell
    5. Drew
    6. Ortiz
    7. Lugo
    8. Varitek
    9. Bailey
When Youk is back put him in the 3 spot and slide everyone down.
