First vs. Last: Sox-Yanks Gamer IV

We don’t imagine we’ll be able to post many more game threads involving both of our teams with this kind of title.  But for this evening, which we hope remains dry, we’ll leave it hanging out there, if only to needle (yep, it’s a needle, YFs, pointing out that the Yankees are in last place.  Cellar dwellers.  Bringing up the rear. On the outside looking in.  Whatever synonym/epithet you care to use, it’s true. They’re in last.  At least for a few more hours).

More seriously (and yes, we kid: we aren’t willing to even think about gloating over an April standings lead, nor are we willing to overlook the fantastic lineup the Yankees put on the field every day for fear of seeing a scoreboard that indicates a seven run deficit and Joel Pineiro pitching, all in the third inning), we look forward to seeing Daisuke Matsuzaka pitching this evening.  It will be interesting to see how Daisuke adjusts (or if he adjusts) after last week’s plodding and difficult effort against the Bombers.  Certainly we Sox fans expected a little more out of our new star and tonight will be a good test; a second appearance against an offensive juggernaut in less than a week, on enemy soil.  Yankees fans can look forward to their best starter taking the hill in Andy Pettitte in the friendly (at least to them) confines of the House that Ruth Built with a lineup that finally looks as it was designed.  Consider this your game thread for tonight’s action.  Lineups after the jump.

  • welcome back coco. hopefully those days off didn’t effect the little hot streak you got on. maybe now i can breath easier on balls hit to center.

  • ‘you ‘aint kidding, rod.

    Brad April 27, 2007, 5:57 pm
  • Poor Whiffy Mo! At least he has a particularly sweet memory to savor for a while…

    Hudson April 27, 2007, 5:58 pm
  • Amalie Benjamin said today that Tito’s playing Crisp for his defense, and that he acknowledged that he may not be able to do much at the plate. Which to me sounds like a load of crap, because I feel like if he can’t swing a bat well, he’s at risk to hurt himself worse, in which case they probably wouldn’t be playing him. Sounds more like Tito trying to temper expectations…not that I think most people expect a hell of a lot.

  • I’ll be curious to see whether playing in NYC against the Yankees draws Manny out of his slump… In the past he’s been on fire against the Bombers.
(By the way, has anyone suggested that maybe in this age of terrorism “bombers” is something of an unfortunate nickname? Maybe it needs updating… The Bronx Boo-Yas? Bashers? Belters?)

    Hudson April 27, 2007, 6:04 pm
  • Bah, I had tickets to this game, but instead, I’m still at work! Joy.

    Lar April 27, 2007, 6:07 pm
  • hudson- i stopped following the bullets after the name change. so silly. oh the good ol’ days when teams could have names like the colt 45’s.
looks like showers all nite in the bronx. the weekend doesn’t look much better.

  • That sucks, Lar. Hope you get to go (and that the game is played, period).

  • this game is gonna be played. there is a little rain in the area but not much.

    Speak for yourself!

  • OK, so last night I had maybe a touch too much Malbec (“too much” at this point meaning maybe three glasses, I am getting old) and got a little chippy in the Yankees game thread. So tonight I go the peaceful route. That can mean only one thing:
    JACK AND COKES!!
Or not. Maybe I will stick to TWO glasses of wine. Let’s have an entertaining, thoughtful, and appropriately competitive game thread everyone.
    GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:07 pm
  • Bleachers: full. Season ticket holders and fancy seats: still strolling in, big time. Not many fans in the grandstand.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:08 pm
  • And there’s my LFRS, doing his thing, tapping out weakly.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:10 pm
  • Kevin Youkilis’ facial hair has got to go. Does he really wake up every morning, see himself in the mirror and go “yeah, that’s hot…”.
Meanwhile, this ump sure has a slow little strike call. Kind of annoying.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:11 pm
  • Heh, gave the tickets to a workmate already. Hmm, this is probably the worst thing to do – giving them incentive to give me work during Red Sox series!
I say they earned the right to gloat. Just remember it (might) come around!

    Lar April 27, 2007, 7:12 pm
  • Andy looks “Efficient” so far. Up until that walk.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:12 pm
  • Relax, it’s just a slump. Everyone has them. He started off hot and now he’s on a bad stretch.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:12 pm
  • Hey, where is everyone?! This is a Yanks-Sox game, for heck’s sake!!!

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:12 pm
  • Wow, this ump is painful with his strike calls.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:13 pm
  • its gonna be a long night with runge. posada is throwing the ball back before we even get a call

    sam YF April 27, 2007, 7:13 pm
  • I feel like they should consider being a little more aggressive in the count. Andy starts pretty much every ab the same way, with a fastball (of some kind) low in the zone.
And yeah, this ump’s irritating. Ortiz looked AWFUL that ab.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • Touch pitch gets Papi swinging.
Mini Manny at the plate. We want Maxi Manny back.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • Had tix too, decided not to go….

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • Best pitch to hit Ortiz saw that whole ab was the first one.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:15 pm
  • Wait, some people said Manny sat out because he was pissed about an official scorer’s call? What? Never heard that before…

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • Nice rip by Manny on 3-1, 2 men on base to strand.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • Andy is lucky JD missed that meat….got him to ground out to the automatic out maker.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • That was a bad pitch. Lucky for Pettitte Manny didn’t get the good part of the bat on it.
    C’mon Drew…
Normally I don’t like first pitch swinging, but I don’t blame him for that one…too bad he missed it.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • There’s your early pitch aggression from Drew, d1, swings and misses at a ball above his neck. He then taps to first. 2 LOB. Start up the LOB-o-meter!

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • At least we won’t have to look at any one wearing those dumb fuzzy dice hats with the K on them tonight….

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • Andy didn’t look that sharp, but according to the booth guys he’s struggled early in games. (Didn’t know that…)
19 pitches to get through the first. Didn’t score, but a productive inning.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:20 pm
  • In JD’s defense, that slider was Faaaaaaaat.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:20 pm
  • “There’s your early pitch aggression from Drew, d1, swings and misses at a ball above his neck.”
That was a hanging slider, I don’t blame him for hacking at it. Andy’s lucky he hung it just a little too high.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:20 pm
  • One mississippi, two mississippi….strike 3…Come on Runge today junior.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:22 pm
  • Matsuzaka misses location on the 1-0…c’mon now, get it together.
NASTY change up. Tough break for Damon…Matsuzaka was squeezed last game, wonder if it’s gonna be different today.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:22 pm
  • Hang em and bang em. Christ…terrible pitch.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:23 pm
  • Ump has a low strike zone. Andy was getting that pitch too, though.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • Is it me or is Abreau having problems with Dice K?

    Rob April 27, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • KK

    mattymatty April 27, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • D1 are you sitting behind me or something? LOL

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • Nice play by Lowell! I didn’t think he was going to get him, but he did.

    mattymatty April 27, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • Runge has gone from painful to beyond painful, all in 5 minutes. Is this a method, is he thinking about the pitches, or is he just making a spectacle of himself? If it’s the latter, he’s a complete d*uchebag.
Lowell makes a spectacular play, termed “good” and “nice” by Kay, who certainly would have been in the clouds had the same play been made by Scott Brosius or Robin Ventura, talking about how they might be the “greatest ever at the barehand”…

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • Wow..we got out of a 1st inning against the Yanks without letting them score.

    Rob April 27, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • Well, maybe it wasn’t “spectacular”, but certainly “excellent”.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • Fantastic play by Lowell. Matsuzaka looks sharper, that changeup’s been ridiculous to this point.
Abreu is now 0/4 with a walk and 4 K’s against Matsuzaka. Guess he’s not seeing the ball real well…

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • Ugh, we call this part of the lineup “the Dead Zone”.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • For those watching live….did Dice look better in that inning that the last game against the Yanks?

    Rob April 27, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • Yes.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • What was wrong with that 2-1 pitch?!

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • Daisuke’s changeup is sick…really amazing. The drop and movement really is unfair.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • “For those watching live….did Dice look better in that inning that the last game against the Yanks?”
Much. He missed location on the Jeter pitch and on a fastball to Damon, but he’s looked real sharp.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • Matsuzaka looked great this past inning, other than that one pitch he left up to Jeter.
Pettitte looks like he’s missing his spots a bit. Not too much, but a bit.

    mattymatty April 27, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • At least Tek made him throw 9 pitches that AB

    Rob April 27, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • Am I the only one who thought that pitch was right down the middle? “Outside part of the plate” my ass.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • Tek’s got a bat full of molasses. It’s like he brought the weight from the on-deck circle.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • Tek making him work…not happy about the K but whatever…
    Heh, Igawa looks drugged…

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • Coco!!! Dare we dream that the Coco of 2004-5 is re-emerging?

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:33 pm
  • Coco! Gets lucky with a hard grounder.

    mattymatty April 27, 2007, 7:33 pm
  • Atta boy Crisp, hit that one hard.
    “Past a diving Jeter!”

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:34 pm
  • MK talks about the same things over and over and over….Same exact things he said last week about Tek and Dustin.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:34 pm
  • I am glad to know that Michael Kay has seen enough of Dustin Pedroia to proclaim that he’s “not a GG caliber second baseman”.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:34 pm
  • I say Pedroia jacks one today.

    mattymatty April 27, 2007, 7:35 pm
  • Pedroia puts every ounce of his muscle into his swing, and cracks it 200 feet, softly.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:35 pm
  • SF you made me spit my beer…I just read the molasses comment.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:35 pm
  • Beer. Now that’s a thought. To the fridge!

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:36 pm
  • This ump is REALLY annoying. Crowd doesn’t seem pleased either…
Yeah, I don’t think Pedroia’s supposed to be GG caliber, but he’s looked very good so far.
Pedroia makes solid contact on a pitch up…but it’s an easy play for Abreu.
Still, Andy at 36 pitches through 2.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:36 pm
  • 37 pitches for Pettite so far

    Rob April 27, 2007, 7:36 pm
  • Gentlemen, AP has no pitch count, stop counting.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:38 pm
  • Haha, I watch pitch count the same way I watch LOB. In a lot of ways, those numbers mean more to me then anything else, for different reasons. Which makes me a weird baseball fan.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:40 pm

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • thank god giambi didnt try to take 2b on that one

    sam YF April 27, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • …but obviously not this at bat. (What? I’m not Bill McNeal over here)

    mattymatty April 27, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • Its Japanese Crazy time!!!

    mattymatty April 27, 2007, 7:40 pm

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:42 pm

    airk April 27, 2007, 7:42 pm

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:42 pm

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:43 pm

    mattymatty April 27, 2007, 7:44 pm
  • This lineup is relentless.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:44 pm
  • Hey SF! I too an enjoying one last Guiness draft can. Cheers!

    mattymatty April 27, 2007, 7:44 pm

  • Slainte!

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:45 pm
  • SF – ah, lucky you. My SO bought the Extra Stout. I hate that.

    Lar April 27, 2007, 7:45 pm
  • Wow, that’s like a Sophie’s Choice of alcohol, Trisk. I’d go for a beer run.
Daisuke gets Cano going up the ladder, 2 down, no score.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:46 pm
  • I don’t understand the criticism here. How is knowing that he throws soft stuff half the time in fastball counts an advantage? Wouldn’t being able to sit fastball be more of an advantage, or at least the same?
He definitely throws harder as the game progresses, because I know I remember seeing some 94’s late last game.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:46 pm
  • 3 K’s for Matsuzaka.

    mattymatty April 27, 2007, 7:46 pm
  • When we moved to Brooklyn, we went from DirecTV to Time Warner, and that’s a huge plus, simply for the fact that my wife is probably going to want to watch something else on the main tube, soon, and we’ve now got picture-in-picture, so I can still see the game. Whew.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:47 pm
  • Here is something for debate….
    This is hypothetical….
If the Sox were to sweep this or win 2 out of 3, at what point does the Boss have/not have his meltdown?

    Rob April 27, 2007, 7:48 pm
  • D1 working backwards is a huge advantage to the pitcher. It’s not done often or really at all because you have to have supreme confidence in your breaking stuff. Here’s why….
You miss with the slider or curve on pitch 1, hitters will be guessing fastball pitch 2, but with Daisuke’s confidence like we saw against Jorge last week he will throw 4 breaking balls in a row and as a hitter you are just shaking your head.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:50 pm
  • There we go Lugo, nice job taking the high fastball the other way.
    Pettitte doesn’t look real sharp…
Kay criticizing Boston’s defense up the middle. I’d take it over NY’s, truthfully.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:50 pm

  • IBM I like Beer period.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:54 pm
  • That’s what I thought too, Trisk, but the dudes in the booth disagree. Not Kay, one of the other guys…I don’t think it was Leiter, either. He kept saying it’ll hurt Matsuzaka later in the game and that the hitters can sit on the soft stuff…
    YOOOOUUK!
Papi grounds out on another pitch up…tisk tisk.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:54 pm
  • Ever try Modelo Negra?

    I'm Bill McNeal April 27, 2007, 7:55 pm
  • Impossible, you can’t expect breaking ball. Fastball, fastball, fastball, adjust to breaking ball. Can’t do reverse. Ignore them.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 7:56 pm
  • Minky saving Jeter another throwing error…
You guys can criticize him all you want for not hitting, I don’t blame you. But even a play like that’s like a 60/40 thing for Giambi.
Phillips, on the other hand…probably should be in there…

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 7:56 pm
  • Somehow that qualifies as a “very nice play” by Jeter, though Lowell’s was only just plain “nice”. All because Jeter twisted his body oddly and threw off-balance (in the dirt, no less) to catch a very slow runner. God these guys are ballwashers.

    SF April 27, 2007, 7:56 pm
  • Agreed, Trisk. That’s why I was so confused.

    SF April 27, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • No, SF. Moosehead, Labatts, some of the worst crap I’ve ever had. As bad as PBR.
Maybe we could talk in some sort of beer code to confuse the trollers.

    I'm Bill McNeal April 27, 2007, 8:02 pm

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 8:03 pm

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 8:04 pm

  • And there it is…make the tough ones, f*ck up the really, really easy ones. F*CK
Apparently A-Gon’s one of the best defensive shortstops of all time, and Lugo’s a worthless piece of sh*t. No, that was not a fine play, but shut the f*ck up Kay. I HATE him.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 8:07 pm

    airk April 27, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • Way to go, Matsuzaka! Lugo makes a routine play a little dicey with a high, wide throw to Youk for the 6-3 DP.

    SF April 27, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • Thankfully Abreau hit into the DP

    Rob April 27, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • I can’t believe he just called Alex Gonzo one of the best ANYTHING ever….Redunkulous.

    Triskaidekaphobia April 27, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • Hehe, but Abreu says, “Well to be fair, you guys should have been out of the inning. Here’s the easiest double-play ball I could possibly give you.”
Too early to say Matsuzaka has Abreu’s number?

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • I will say this again: Kay is actually somewhat listenable on his ESPN daily call-in show. He morphs into something else entirely during Yankee broadcasts. I know he’s got to be a “company man” to some extent, but I don’t know how he does it. It’s almost Sybilesque.

his bullpen seems to have the utmost confidence in him. maybe a catcher doesn’t have to drive in 100 RBI to be valuable. i hear he’s good with the young guys too.
maybe i’m starting to change my mind here.

Same sh*t, different day. With the exception of the NY start, when he struggled most of the game, Matsuzaka’s almost always solid-to-great…loses the strike zone for an inning…then comes back and pitches another one or two solid innings. Just f*cking weird.
Also, someone’s least favorite Red Sox has had a pretty damn good game, working a 7-pitch walk to key the 5th inning rally and belting a homer. Hehe.

    desturbd1 April 27, 2007, 9:40 pm
  • Dio, chill, Timlin’s been OK so far this year, and I don’t see Romero getting more than one batter if he doesn’t make an out. Timlin’s ERA is a bit high because of that Wells homer…but that wouldn’t have happened if Pena hadn’t f*cked up a catch in CF that he probably should have made.

No way he’s back out for the 7th, though, at 117 pitches now. A better start then last time, and really, an extremely dominant start were it not for the three-walk 4th. There was maybe one well-hit single in this whole game, and it was Giambi’s with the bases empty. Just needs to get rid of these damn yippy innings…

Henn’s got a sneaky fast-ball, huh. Lowell and Manny both late on a pitch that really wasn’t thrown that hard.

  • Face it, Sox fans. Daisuke is not exactly living up to expectations.
His command and control stink once again. 4BBs so far.
All the hype about him being Pedro-like or even Greg Maddux is crap.
He will be lucky to have an ERA below 5.
He has been fortunate to get such run support the past two games. He could be 1-3 or worse.
You should be thankful that he doesn’t turn into Hideki Irabu, part II.
All the Red Sox Nation’s hype and delusion about Matsuzaka should end tonight. The honeymoon is over.

It’s really weird, though, he doesn’t get hit hard…he just loses the plate. Like most of the time when you think of a headcase pitcher, you think of a guy who gets frustrated and then starts giving up a bunch of rockets, but that wasn’t the case in Toronto, and it wasn’t the case tonight. And then he always comes so close to getting out of it…and then Damon and Jeter bloop singles, or in the case of Toronto, a guy steps out and he loses it again. I dunno, it just seems…strange.

PS: The dude we traded for Donnelly, Phil Seibel, just went down with season-ending arm surgery. Not that he was much of a prospect anyway.

Lot of people, including me, said he looked really off last time we faced him, but at Tampa he seemed like he was back to his old self. Now, he’s off again. Could well be the lack of consistant work, I guess, but this would scare the hell out of me if I were a YF.

  • Hell, at this rate we could trot out 7 pitchers on Sunday. Not out of necessity, either. Just because we can.

  • Sox up:
    4 over the Jays
    4.5 over the Orioles
6 over Tampa Bay (in progress)
    6.5 over New York
.682 record, best in the Majors.

  • What is most amazing about this 15-7 record is that the most crucial Sox hitter — Manny Ramirez — has barely hit all year, while Boston’s 7-8-9 hitters are all under .240. Not to mention that our #5 is Julian Tavarez.
If Ramirez starts being Ramirez, and the rotation stays healthy, this record should be sustainable. Impressive so far, anyway.

  • Dont look now but that explosive Yankee offense that was gonna run circles around boston only has a 124-117 run advantage over Boston.

  • I have a way of preparing myself for games that I’m particularly nervous about, like this one. I was out most of the evening, and sat outside for a second telling myself the Sox probably lost. Matsuzaka got touched for three or four runs and the Sox couldn’t touch Pettitte.
Then I walked in, turned on NESN, and the Sox had a 7-4 lead in the eighth. Awesome feeling. Awesome.
Dionysus, Lugo talked pretty extensively upon his arrival in Boston about the wife beating charges. I’d suggest taking a look at those quotes. He’s pretty convincing, and he has absolutely no other complaints from his current wife, his current or ex-teammates or anyone else about any temper, anger problems or general meanness. He’s loved by EVERYone — except the woman he was divorcing at the time she made the allegation.
In fact, here’s the relevant portion of the Globe story.
“That was the worst night of my life because I went from the top all the way to the bottom,” said Lugo, his head down, his churrasco steak sitting untouched in front of him. “Then the team just released me for no reason, for something that I’d never done. I was more surprised that that happened to me than anybody else. I was shocked. I was humiliated by my ex-wife; I was humiliated by Houston.
“They made me look guilty right away.” …
Lugo still expresses disbelief at the incident, repeating that he was brought up to respect women. Asked what it was like — that night in the Houston jail, his life and career and reputation about to be changed forever — he said softly, “You cry. You think the wall is falling right there. As a man, you’ve got feelings, and as a man, you cry. I’ll tell you, I cried.”

  • Was he crying because he beat his wife or because he was looking at a future out of baseball, for all of these guy’s skills they are still human and capable of doing down right nasty things, be it cheating or wife beating. just because someone has a letter on his cap does not make him a sait or a sinner.

  • Long season guys long season, 100’s of games left, lets talk again late summer, OK Red SUX fans ???

  • Nice, Judo, how you maintain the smear while maintaining the veneer of fairness by throwing in the “saint or sinners” line. If that’s true, then how about applying the innocent-until-proven principle, especially when someone has shown absolutely NO signs of having the temperament that would typically lead to the behavior he was accused of?
Unless, of course, you’re more interested in maintaining his guilt than coming to a reasoned decision.

  • Something to remember, there are a number of men and women who realize the stigma of domestic violence. They realize that the accusation alone can be enough to ruin or setback someone’s life.
I am not saying if he did or did not do it, but given they were going through a divorce there could be other motives behind this.
It is over, he has moved on, she has moved on.
