Flaming Brown Bag of Poo: Sox-A’s Gamer II

Suspensions, injuries, losses.  Fun first week.  The proverbial flaming brown bag.

Comment about tonight's action from Oakland here.

Beckett is appealing the suspension, so hopefully he can get it lowered to 3-4 games. If so they might be able to schedule it so he doesn’t miss a start at all.

It would have, Bill. When Nomar went to his left to field the ball there wasn’t anyone there to cover 2nd.
Because of that Youk gets an RBI single. Let’s see if we can keep this lead for once.

Bay walks and then Lowell singles in another run. Our offense has needed a game like this to raise their confidence.

Even when the Sox have a good inning they still manage to strand the maximum possible number of runners.
Let’s go Daisuke.

Dice-K’s fastball is hovering around 88. That’s Igawa-speed. Is he injured, or is this his way of trying to get some measure of control over his fastball?

Cust with a broken bat single. I swear the Sox have had more cheap hits against them in the past week than they’ve had in the last two years.

Didn’t you just know that after scoring three in the first, Matsuzaka would turn right around and give it all back?
Man, this sucks. Where the hell did our starting pitching go?

The Red Sox could play 500% better baseball and they’d still suck dogballs.
This is shaping up to be a really long season. Small samples keep getting bigger, every day.

Does Ellsbury really suck this bad? I’ve read his projections and they seem pretty optimistic, but I don’t see it. He can’t hit an inside pitch to save his life.

Masterson is warming up hard, I think he’s going to start the 2nd inning. Daisuke looked injured out there.

Remy and Orsillo confirming it, Daisuke is out. Remy said Daisuke was grabbing his leg earlier.
WTP from Ortiz.

One thing that has gone unnoticed is how great Green’s defense is. He has really impressed me so far this season.

I wish Gerb would get our predictaroo up and running, we wrote them a good ten days ago and I would be looking awfully prescient right now w/r/t the Sox.

Hey Youk, shut your mouth and go sit down. He falls off the bag and then yells at the Boston first base coach.

Youk made it back to the bag in time, but he tripped and fell off, and Giambi then tagged him. Youk then ran his mouth off to the base coach, for reasons unknown.
Wow, this team is bloody pathetic. Bay hits a double, but waits about 3 seconds before running because he thought it was going to go foul. The right fielder dove and missed it and it rolled to the wall, but Bay only got to 2nd on it since he didn’t run out of the box.

I think Ellsbury is what I worry most about, long-term. It’s too bad, it’s a (possibly) thunderous 2-6 in the lineup. Speaking of 2-6, that might be the Red Sox’ record soon.

That interview with Beckett was hilarious:
“Soscia said I wasn’t remorseful enough,” said Beckett. “What should I have done, gone up and given him a hug after the benches cleared? I wasn’t in a hugging mood.”
WHAT THE FUCK DREW? Lazily fields the ball and it goes right under his glove. Horrible.

I’m conditioned so far this season to think this attempted rally will fail. Come on, Bay!
Not what I intended, but a run’s a run.

The Red Sox offense: 3rd fewest runs scored, 7th worst batting average, 7th worst OBP.
The Red Sox pitching: 9th worst ERA, 7th most HR given up, 3rd most HBP

By the way, I hate and have always hated these late West Coast games… And anecdotally, I feel like the Sox always do worse in games starting after 10 pm EST. Probably impossible to check that.

Ellsbury! A line drive hit! Right up the middle. Nice. 2 out, he should try to steal, fo’ sho.

Didn’t happen, great play by Ellis on the foul pop-up. Can the bullpen continue to hold, hold, hold?

Slightly more auspicious follow-up: K (Ellis helped him with two crap bunt attempts, though).

Giambi, Holliday, Cust due up. Lopez about to pitch, I think. That sounds like a recipe for Game Over.

Lopez can’t find the strike zone. He’s at 2-0 on the batter after walking two guys already (one out).

3-0, then 3-1…walked him. 1 out, bases loaded on balls. Just go ahead and walk him or hit him, Lopez. Make the shame complete.

Game ends on a high chopper Pedroia can’t quite get to first in time. What a backbreaker. Matsuzaka has really fucked up his first two starts royally to join Lester. This game blew.

Wow, glad I went to bed at 12:30. And now our entire bullpen is worn out, with Wake on the mound today. Good thing we have an off day tomorrow.
