Flurry of Free Agentry

Kuroda to the Yanks for a year, Beltran to the Yanks for three years, Napoli to the Sox for two years (and apparently he left money from another team on the table…extremely reasonable deal for the Sox on a guy who played well over the course of the season and had a big hand in some October games). If 3B and CF are going to the young ‘uns, the Sox are finished patching holes.

  • The Sox are in very good shape. The Napoli deal is a good one for them. I didn’t agree ag with your comment yesterday that the Kuroda deal was desperate only because it’s one year for a guy who has been a consistent middle-of-the-rotation inning-eater with flashes (and sometimes longer stretches) of excellence. Given what a premium starting pitching in the AL East is, I don’t think that deal is at all unreasonable. The Beltran deal clearly does reflect some desperation. Regardless, they need the thump in the line-up so I’m happy to have him, and a 3-year deal that makes me wince is better than an 8+-year deal that makes me wince. They still need at least one starter for the rotation even if Pineda will slot in there (he is still alive, right?), and 3B is still a question mark thanks to A-Rod’s drama. Kelly Johnson can slot in I guess. I don’t know, for all the action – and there has been a ton of it – I’m struggling to get excited about next year. I’ll get there…

  • Brian Roberts is a low-risk, high-reward signing.

I am fine with the moves so far. It’s not like we have a choice, right? Desolate farm system. (Thanks Cash)
