For Posterity

Strolling through the Smithsonian this morning, we couldn’t help but notice the change in how our beloved team is now considered within the continuum of baseball history. At the entry to a collection of sports and entertainment related objects (including a Roberto Clemete uniform, classically and simply beautiful, and Dorothy’s ruby slippers, for real) stood two items that brought a wide smile. One, a 2007 WS-worn Jon Lester jersey, and two, a base from the 2004 Series. Both celebrating the Sox and their wins, and both emblems of baseball immortality. Not Bill Buckner’s spikes or the bat of Bucky Dent, or even a sweater of the Babe’s. Not the stuff of ignominy, but rather material proof of Red Sox’ successes.
So despite last night, we can only say to the team we love: you’ve come a long way, baby.

  • Bowden sent down, FYI, contrary to expectations that he might be up for good. Not sure how much it was due to yesterday’s performance specifically and how much it was just because the Sox wanted another reliever for today.

  • Hey – the Sox went from a league-wide joke to join the ranks of the rest of baseball. Good for them.

  • Not sure I would qualify the pre-2004 Sox as a “league-wide joke”, Andrew. They were a storied franchise with a ridiculous number of ignominious moments and the butt of jokes. But that is a bit different from a label of being a “league-wide joke”.

When has Andrew ever passed up a chance to take a shot? Not that I’m one to talk. I just try to be a bit more subtle. :)

  • Well, I think of the Cubs as somewhat of a joke for exactly the same reason.
