Game 1 Open Thread – The Yanks that Got Away

White Sox/Astros.  Jose vs. Roger.  Some former, but no actual Bosox or Yankees.  The best part? Steinbrenner’s gotta be contemplating putting his head in a microwave after seeing the probable starters.

Over/under on comments left in this thread, not from YF or SF? I’ll set it at 3.  Go to it, baseball fans. Beat the number.  Make the site feel useful.  Please.

  • Josh Groban’s Star Spangled Banner–9.99 on the shmaltz-o-meter. SOMEONE CALL VEECK!

  • Complaining about shmaltz @ the World Series? They go hand-in-hand!
Personally, driving with the windows down in a misty October Chicago, the Star-Spangled Banner sounded great. Over-the-top the way it should be.
    Sox win in 5.

  • What’s the spread in the Giants/Broncos game tomorrow? I think Ron Dayne is gonna have a huge day.

  • My question is: What sort of stupid name is Wandy?

  • Pierzynski. Awful.

  • AJ is one of the more annoying players of recent memory.

  • Can Fox please lose the “Brandon Backe is mic’d so we have to hear him say ‘SAFE’ or ‘YEAH BABY’ or ‘OH – OH – YES!’ for the 56th time” feature?

  • If Ozzie brings in Marte when the rest of his pen is rested….not a good idea.

  • Unbelievable. My building in Manhattan only has Directv, and the thunderstorms here in the city have caused the satellite dish to lose signal. AARGH!!!

  • Okay, I like Liz Phair (at least before she inexplicably began trying to compete with Britney, Christina, and the Simpson sisters), but that was just a hair above picking a random person out of the crowd and saying, “Sing.” I think she missed more notes than she correctly hit. If they had to pick someone from Chicago, couldn’t they have at least gotten Billy Corgan and the rest of the Pumpkins? At least they would have rocked.

  • 1 batter 2 late, Ozzie. Not so good. And now Berkman with an open base and the tying run in scoring position.
    Proceed w/ extreme caution.

  • Game over. Is there any Astro, with the exception of Berkman and maybe Lane, capable of making contact against Jenks?

  • I think we now know why Clemens won like 3 games this year. You knew Ensberg was dead in the 8th inning when he stepped out of the way of a cut fastball that was about 1/2″ off the plate, moving like it was coming right at him. He looks like a hitter with more holes in him than Scooter Libby’s alibi.

  • I thought Corgan OD’ed.

  • Man, watching Jenks last night made me wish he was still part of the Angels’ org (though the Sox clearly deserve credit for taking a guy who was an unreliable mess and turning him into gold).

  • Corgan OD’d. On ego.

    SF October 23, 2005, 7:20 pm
  • I think Corgan recently pulled a Jewel and published a book of skull-clutchingly bad poetry. But the Pumpkins rocked back in the day.
