Gio Gonzalez tries to end the A’s skid against the Yankees. AJ Burnett tries to not help him. It’s an early west-coaster as the Yankees get a day off tomorrow before facing Anaheim this weekend.

4-2 on a Swish Bomb??? Color me surprised.
2 out triple by Ass Hamster…lame.
Sox lost, Tampa lost…this would be a great win.
AJ leaves him stranded.
4-2 after 6.
GO CANUCKS GO!!!
Now we are doing the swing at everything thing. 2 quick outs by Jones and Eduardo.
Jeter looking for another hit.
Hard for me to dislike Swisher. He’s provided huge value the last years. If it means one stinker, while he still gets on base, so be it.
It’s crazy, even Jeter, for as much as he’s been sucking, has still been getting on base about a third of the time. The Yankees are scoring the most runs in the game for a reason. Even crazier? The Yankee pitching has given up the fifth fewest runs in the league.
What value? He’s a funny/nice guy sure, and he had one good year. But what has he ever done in the playoffs? I think he had 1 good game in ’09?
We can do better. Unless he gets it together.
What value?
2009: 3.7 WAR
2010: 4.4 WAR
That’s over $44M in value for $11M in salary.
The post-season is irrelevant as a small sample.
Postseason is everything dude.
The Yanks actually lead the league in.. first order wins, second order wins, and third order wins, which is to say they have been slightly unlucky in *actual* wins, though if they had just won those two against Seattle, they would’ve been as expected, or much closer to it.
Tex actually hasn’t been as good as advertised, though he puts up great traditional numbers. Mostly his batting average is down.
Alright Joba giving up back to back singles. Let’s not blow this.
Liner back to Joba, doubled up at first. End of 8.
Line drive double play, a mark of luck. Will take it!
You guys are making me dizzy with all these new-fangled statistics.
Since Coco Crisp left Boston?
Crisp: 4.5 WAR
Ellsbury: 3.4 WAR
“Postseason is everything dude.”
Everything is no one thing, or nothing. :)
Exactly. So compared to Ass Hamster and Jacoby, Swish is right there…i.e. garbage.
Not that I give any credence to your fancy-pants stats. ;)
Woah. That was deep james.
GO CANUCKS GO!!!!!
:)
krueg, Those are their combined value since 2009. Swisher is at 8.6 WAR in that same time frame.
I don’t believe in WAR.
Check that, 8.7 WAR for Swish since the beginning of 2009. That’s more than JD Drew or David Ortiz, for instance.
ENTER SANDMAN!!!!
Two more garbage players…
What is Ichiro’s WAR…29.5???
Then you don’t “believe” in numbers. :)
How much is in your wallet? Whoops, you can’t know.
How much do you weigh? Nope, no chance.
How many pink hats are there in Fenway? Good luck!
Stop. If these stats were so accurate, everyone would use them.
There are variables, which is why they aren’t used universally.
But nice try.
Ichiro? Garbage. :)
8.8 WAR since 2009, but that includes a -.3 this year. He’s also made $53M 2009-2011 with another $17M due next year.
Swisher has been a far better value.
Love the pink hats reference though…
And I have no money…
And I don’t want to see my weight…
I’ll take ability over value any day.
4 STRAIGHT WINS!!!! SWEEP!!!!
That’s more like it.
The Yanks close one. Another day of excellent pitching.
Man, the recent run kind of remind me of the good old days. The obvious question is whether they can keep it up..
First place! #1!!! By two games!!!
I love the years when I don’t expect anything. So satisfying!
Sorry, but the stats show Swisher has just as much ability as Ichiro.
And that’s why those stats are garbage dude…
Let’s all get ready to root for Vancouver!!!!
GO CANUCKS GO!!! FUCK BOSTON!!!!
It’s weird to think, after all the crap the Yankees have been through already (Jeter/Posada/Swisher sucks, Soriano is terrible and a waste, they’re hitting too many homeruns, they’re not clutch, they don’t win enough at home, the bullpen is being overused, etc), that they’re currently the best team in the game.
Okay, the hitting too many homeruns thing was always nonsensical as an insult.
So then use the traditional stats:
2009-2011:
Swisher: .262/.361/.479, 61 HR, 191 RBI,
Ichiro: .324/.366/.412, 17 HR, 107 RBI, 81 SB
It’s only close cause those crazy stats give Ichiro a big edge in the field in 2009. You’re crazy dude if you’d rather have Ichiro at this point. He’s a singles hitter playing a power position.
I don’t think they belong any where near there, Andrew, but I’m not complaining!
I don’t know if it’s an insult, but hitting too many HRs thing just means the team as a whole might have a high volatility, which in theory pulls them toward .500. But who knows.
OK James…Swisher is better than Ichiro. (rolling eyes so hard they fell out of my fucking head)
We don’t need anymore power. We need hits dude. And he is INFINITELY better in the field.
I’m watching a really cool show on HBO right now…”When It Was a Game II”. I really love the video of baseball from back then. It’s so cool to see America back then and how important baseball was to people…
That and knowing the Sox never won anything. :)
Either you’re playing the fool or making yourself look like one.
“We don’t need anymore power. We need hits dude.”
Runs are more important than hits.
“And he is INFINITELY better in the field.”
Not this year or last year.
I’ll give you debateable, but Ichiro has been just as bad this year, if not worse.
I want a poll of all the people on this site and see how many would take Swish over Ichiro…we’ll see who is the fool, fool.
I don’t know a lot about baseball, never claimed to…but I do know that Ichiro is in another universe compared to Swisher. This year, last year, ten years from now, etc.
To say otherwise is plain ridiculous and the perfect illustration of why the new stats are a joke.
Who you calling a fool, fool?
In that universe, would you sign Clemens this June? Or maybe Pedro?
Players age. Younger players pass them. It’s not shocking or something to distrust. It’s the game they play.
Stats are a joke to the extent that the number 1 makes you laugh and more than that dastardly number 3. Mathematics is such a funny subject!
Nice false equivalency…
Look man, we’ll see what everyone else thinks but for now let’s put this disagreement aside and get ready to root our ASSES off for the Vancouver Canucks!!!!
GO CANUCKS GO!!!!
