Go West: Sox-Mariners Gamer I

So there’s about no chance I will be up to see the Sox tonight – a long week, a west coast start, and Kyle Snyder.  For those on the east coast who have nocturnal abilities and those on the west coast who have the stomach to see if the Sox can make Snyder look like a champ, here’s your game thread.  Comment away.

  • Some more from Boston.com
Kason Gabbard, who has arrived in Seattle was not at the park today because he has not yet been added to the roster, will make the start tomorrow in place of the injured Tim Wakefield

    Rob July 21, 2006, 8:47 pm
  • I think I said this here the other day, but I saw Gabbard start for the Pawsox on Tuesday, and I was thoroughly unimpressed. His AA numbers are much better than his AAA numbers, but that he really struggled duting his stint in Pawtucket doe snot bode well for tomorrow. I’m hoping for the best, but I’m kind of glad I won’t be around tomorrow afternoon.

    Laura July 21, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • Oh, and doe snot= does not, but I think you all could probably figure that out. It was just such a weird combo of words that came up, I had to point it out.

    Laura July 21, 2006, 9:06 pm
  • Which leads into a probable issue of Gabbard gretting knocked around tomorrow.

    Rob July 21, 2006, 9:16 pm
  • Gabbard AA stats
W L ERA G GS CG IP H R ER HR BB SO
    9 2 2.57 13 13 1 73.2 51 26 21 4 25 68
    AAA Stats
W L ERA G GS CG IP H R ER HR BB SO
    1 3 4.97 5 5 0 29.0 30 17 16 5 10 23
The hits went up, the HRs went up as did the BB’s per appearance. Not a good omen.

    Rob July 21, 2006, 9:23 pm
  • His scouting report:
Scouting Report: Lefty suffered nagging injuries over his first few year in pro ball. When healthy, Gabbard has a high 80s sinking fastball that hits the low 90s, with a plus changeup and curveball. Mature with good mound presence.

    Rob July 21, 2006, 9:24 pm
  • If you look this kid up and review the stats, the time at AA this year has been his only real bright spot stats wise. His other time in the minors has not looked all that great.

    Rob July 21, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • has a high 80s sinking fastball that hits the low 90s
Must accelerate as it sinks. Score another win for the radar guns.

    attackgerbil July 21, 2006, 9:31 pm
  • Back sooner than I expected. Chacon gives up a double and a walk. Gets the hook. Mercy. Villone walks them loaded.

    attackgerbil July 21, 2006, 9:33 pm
  • Wrong thread, ag. But from the sound of it, the Yanks aren’t doing too well. Hahaha. All the better for us, based on out starters for the next two days.

    Laura July 21, 2006, 9:35 pm
  • This game is choking in my throat like a plate of SF’s grease-laden, coagulated cheese nachos.
Thankfully pinch-hitter Molina flies out to avert a disaester.

    attackgerbil July 21, 2006, 9:35 pm
  • Two off thread posts!! Arrgh. Thanks, Laura. I probably wouldn’t have noticed.

    attackgerbil July 21, 2006, 9:36 pm
  • You know once or twice with “off thread posts” as he/she put it can be looked as as a mistake, but he/she does it every single game. I think he/she likes to annoy the sox thread with Yankee updates.

    TJ July 21, 2006, 9:39 pm
  • Yeah TJ, I’ve probably cross-posted 7-8 times. Usually because I post so rapid-fire on the Yanks threads while I am constantly reading the Sox thread in an adjacent window. Now that I know it annoys sox fans, I will do it with purpose. :)

    attackgerbil July 21, 2006, 9:58 pm
  • Or I could just blame alcohol.

    attackgerbil July 21, 2006, 10:00 pm
  • Homerun Papi 1-0

TJ Sox Fan July 21, 2006, 10:10 pm
  • Snyder looking decent 1-0 after 2 innings.

TJ Sox Fan July 21, 2006, 10:33 pm
  • AGON!!!

    NeffSox July 21, 2006, 10:38 pm
  • just got home anyone know why Pena isn’t starting against this lefty?

    NeffSox July 21, 2006, 10:38 pm
  • …I’ll take that as a no.
jeez guys it is a friday night, no one can stay up later than 10:30??

    NeffSox July 21, 2006, 10:59 pm
  • YOUK!

    TJ July 21, 2006, 11:13 pm
  • now Manny 8-0
This is an impressive display of power

    TJ July 21, 2006, 11:21 pm
  • Five innings, five home runs by five different Sox batters.
Loretta, Crisp, Nixon and Kapler are slacking off.

    Hudson July 21, 2006, 11:34 pm
  • 8-1, wild pitch bringing in the run; men on 1st and 3rd, 1 out. Snyder’s wheels seem to be coming off here in the 5th. Needs a DP, big time.

    Hudson July 21, 2006, 11:35 pm
  • Sac fly makes it 8-2.

    Hudson July 21, 2006, 11:35 pm
  • 1st and 2nd, two outs after another walk.

    Hudson July 21, 2006, 11:40 pm
  • 2 out…ball 2, 2-2 count.

    Devine July 21, 2006, 11:42 pm
  • Couple fouls in a row. Still 2-2. Get out the inning, Snyder! A third foul…

    Devine July 21, 2006, 11:43 pm
  • K! Still 8-2.

    Devine July 21, 2006, 11:44 pm
  • Snyder works out of more danger with a K of Ibanez, after a long at-bat. Close one.
It sure would be nice to get more innings out of this guy (who is something of an Arroyo look-alike) to save the staff for tighter games, but I fear he’s still not much more than a 4-inning pitcher.

    Hudson July 21, 2006, 11:45 pm
  • Sox get a single with 2 out, but nothing else in the top of the 6th. Onward.

    Devine July 21, 2006, 11:54 pm
  • Whoa, wait, something happened to Snyder? Anyone see that? I missed it.

    Devine July 21, 2006, 11:56 pm
  • Snyder down with an injury during warmups for 6th inning, just what we need.

    TJ July 21, 2006, 11:56 pm
  • im listening to WEEI so i dont know what happened.

    TJ July 21, 2006, 11:57 pm
  • is nesn saying anything about kyle?

    sf rod July 21, 2006, 11:57 pm
  • At any rate, Hansen in. Grounder to 3rd. Easy-ish. One down.

    Devine July 21, 2006, 11:59 pm
  • hyperextended leg on warmups for the sixth.

    sf rod July 22, 2006, 12:00 am
  • Fly to Kapler. 2 down.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:00 am
  • Grounder to 3rd. Inning over.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:02 am
  • Season kinda flashes before your eyes when you see a ball at Papi’s hands like that.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:07 am
  • Papi K’s. Long AB.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:09 am
  • Manny hits a line drive single to left.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:11 am
  • How’d Papi act after taking a ball off the hands, Devine? I’m following on GameCast.

    jeremiah July 22, 2006, 12:13 am
  • Varitek…force out. He now stands at 1st.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:13 am
  • I always assume drunk hooligan when I see “On-field delay.”

    jeremiah July 22, 2006, 12:14 am
  • Nixon flies out. 9 outs to go.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:14 am
  • Papi knew that ball hit the bat? why argue going to first when the alternative is a chance to extend your at-bat?

    John P July 22, 2006, 12:15 am
  • Oh, he was upset because he wanted to take 1st on a HBP. Kept pointing and arguing. He seemed all right.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:15 am
  • Seattle announcers MIGHT have a point that it hit the knob of the bat before his hand. But I couldn’t tell definitively on the replay.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:16 am
  • Whew.
    Thanks.

    jeremiah July 22, 2006, 12:16 am
  • They gave a point but, correct me if I am wrong, the hand is considered part of the bat, no?

    John P July 22, 2006, 12:17 am
  • Will hansen retaliate?

    John P July 22, 2006, 12:18 am
  • No idea what the rules are there on getting hit on the hand. I’m sure if it hits the bat, and then your hand, it’s foul, but I would guess hitting your hand is a HBP, no matter if it’s on the bat (if you had to get out of the way).

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:20 am
  • Single-double, for the third Seattle run. Still nobody out.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:21 am
  • Is it me otr does the Mariners announcer sound alot like Orsillo?

    John P July 22, 2006, 12:21 am
  • I think you’re right, Devine, because the umps basically have to go by sound. Hand/wrist is a kind of hard call to make with the batter’s arm in between you and the ball.

    jeremiah July 22, 2006, 12:22 am
  • Good thing we got all those runs. 8-4 on the Ichiro single. Still nobody out. If we can get out of this inning with the same score, I’d be pretty happy.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:23 am
  • DP. Good.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:25 am
  • Single past Gonzalez. Darn.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:26 am
  • Huge DP.

    jeremiah July 22, 2006, 12:27 am
  • MDC coming in! Let’s take it to the 8th, dude.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:27 am
  • Jeremiah and John, I’m definitely thinking that I’ve seen some HBPs on a player’s hand(s).

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:29 am
  • I think you may be right about the HBP. I just always thought that the hand was considered part of the bat. Dont know where I heard that.

    John P July 22, 2006, 12:31 am
  • 3 out on the flyout to Kapler. Can’t let ’em keep scoring two per inning. That whole, “Hansen is good for one inning only” argument gets bolstered today. Clean inning in the 6th. Then trouble all through the 7th.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:32 am
  • I agree, Devine. Six outs to go. Here’s hoping they can do it whilst I rest – ‘night, fellas.

    jeremiah July 22, 2006, 12:33 am
  • Still 8-4 into the bottom of the 8th.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:44 am
  • Long AB for MDC ends in a hard ground ball to Youk (at 3rd).

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:49 am
  • Low curveball misses the hitter’s leg, the catcher’s mitt, and the umpire’s legs. Luckily, no one on base.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:50 am
  • 3-1 pitch and a flyout to Kapler. 2 out.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:51 am
  • Maybe I’ll go to bed if the Mariners don’t score here…maybe not…

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:52 am
  • 2-out single. Please no runs. Please.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:53 am
  • Damn. Another single. 1st and 2nd, 2 out for the Mariners.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:54 am
  • Need to get this Dobbs guy with Ichiro next. No loading bases for Ichiro. But 2-0 to Dobbs. Hold on tight…

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:56 am
  • Nipper and Tek will talk to MDC.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:57 am
  • 2 balls, conference on the mound, 2 strikes.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:58 am
  • nice!!!!!!!!!!!

    John P July 22, 2006, 12:58 am
  • Out of it! 8-4 into the 9th!

    Devine July 22, 2006, 12:59 am
  • i can see the paper tomorow…… 3.5 game lead! one more inning

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:00 am
  • That’s probably the biggest out of the game there.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:00 am
  • How ’bout one more homer for the road? Papi, Manny, I’m looking at you…

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:01 am
  • huge out. papi makes me nervous. he should be done after this at bat

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:03 am
  • Won’t be from Senor Octubre. K.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:03 am
  • I agree with that, John P. Why put him back in the field with a 4-run lead?

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:04 am
  • Ooooof, home run cut on 2-0 from Manny.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:05 am
  • He takes it to 3-1.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:05 am
  • whoaaaaaaaaaa

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:06 am
  • WAY wide and high for ball 4. Nearly got his head.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:06 am
  • should be an interesting bottom 9th. retaliation?

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:07 am
  • Maybe the pitcher rattled himself there. Walk on 4 pitches to Varitek. 1st and 2nd, 1 out.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:09 am
  • Please! For my fantasy team, Trot! (Manny is on my team.)

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:10 am
  • ball 11

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:10 am
  • nice play

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:12 am
  • Nice sliding catch in foul territory from the Seattle 3B there.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:12 am
  • Coco! For my fantasy team!

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:13 am
  • Note: that is not a run scored. Merely a rallying cry from me. 2-0.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:13 am
  • theres your run from manny!

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:15 am
  • Now it is, though! Coco! For my fantasy team!

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:15 am
  • (PS Crisp is also on my team, so that RBI is good for me, too…I had to trade a better outfielder for a good SP, though, or he wouldn’t be there.)

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:16 am
  • who is the highest drafted player on your team?

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:17 am
  • Thanks for stickin’ it out, John P…or are you in an earlier time zone?

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:17 am
  • im guessing its manny

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:18 am
  • On my team or in my league?

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:18 am
  • im really getting fed up with Nixonx pop outs, he must lead the majors with them

    TJ July 22, 2006, 1:19 am
  • That, BTW, was the first run not scored on a home run for the Sox this game, I believe.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:19 am
  • I am in Connecticut. watching on MLB Extra Innings. Its been tough, not because of the time, rather, because tonights game is being shown via the mariners broadcast. I hate nights without Don and Jerry.

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:19 am
  • Yeah, Manny is the highest on my team. Favorite player and completely reliable and all that. But Coco and Schilling are the only 2 other Sox on mine.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:20 am
  • on your team. Im guessing its Manny

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:20 am
  • Unsurprisingly, A-Rod was first in the league.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:21 am
  • Emiliano Fruto. Great name.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:21 am
  • sounds like a dessert

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:22 am
  • Go on, A-Gon. Hit a granny. Just for laughs.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:22 am
  • I’ve got the game on the radio. I don’t know what’s worse, the Coco RSN spots or the damned Ford ads.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:23 am
  • 9-4 to the bottom. Wrap it up, people.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:23 am
  • Gonzo is developing into one of my favorite players this year. I like the way he battles at the plate and his defense is second to none

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:24 am
  • i have all the sox guys except manny and ortiz and am in 3rd place i had a deal for Ortiz sending Derrek Lee and chris carpoenter but my league vetoed it :(

    TJ July 22, 2006, 1:24 am
  • Timlin in 9th?

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:24 am
  • I wonder if all of the Sox feel like it’s 1:30 on their biological clock.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:24 am
  • Dude, even Carpenter for Ortiz is a fair trade, I’d say. Can’t believe it was vetoed.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:25 am
  • yeah, they must be tired. especially after squeezing in that game yesterday

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:26 am
  • I’m in 3rd, too, but way below my innings pace (the first two guys are about on pace), so I’m using some good starters to catch up. Sabathia and Colon did not cooperate tonight, however.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:26 am
  • Bah. A five-game win streak cures what ails you. Even Floyd Landis isn’t tired.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:27 am
  • i have been in second fro about 10 weeks. cant even get close to 1st. I have Lowell and thats it.

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:28 am
  • Red Sox pass White Sox for 2nd in AL with a win 2nite.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:29 am
  • any of you guys see Arods error tonight? I missed it. Was it significant?

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:30 am
  • Stupid good opposing hitters. Ichiro is delaying my bedtime!

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:31 am
  • Ichiro Boggs at the plate

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:31 am
  • It was beautiful. Side-armed it to first, pulled Phillips off the bag high and down the line. That’s what, 5 in 3 games? …
Shea traded to Giants. Shea and Bonds. Bah, hah!

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:31 am
  • Dirt Dogs has some funny pics of Shea. He was a boob even when he was a sox

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:33 am
  • It led to the 4-run inning.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:33 am
  • I like it when Giambi makes errors, myself. They’re usually pretty special…like earlier this year when he threw to 1st when no one was there.
    Finally, the groundout.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:33 am
  • Quick 2nd out.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:34 am
  • HGH: How Gimabi Homers.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:34 am
  • Five in a row, 3.5 up. Nice.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:34 am
  • nice. 3.5 is a start!

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:35 am
  • Giambi.
And cut out that Giambino crap. The Babe never batted .250.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:35 am
  • BTW: Jake Peavey drilled Bonds in the knee 2nite. I think I like that trade now.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:38 am
  • Night all.

    Devine July 22, 2006, 1:39 am
  • you must be watching sportscenter I saw it and I laughed out loud. it was awesome

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:39 am
  • night devine

    John P July 22, 2006, 1:40 am
  • Somebody put a bounty on him.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:40 am
  • Adios from Illinois.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 22, 2006, 1:41 am
