God Help Us, Dept.

Topic of discussion at today’s GM meetings: instant replay. Aren’t the games long enough? Isn’t the humanity what makes them…games? Leave the dopey red flags to the NFL, boys! May the ghost of Bill Klem forever torment all who support such a dastardly encumberance on our great pastime. Boo!

  • I see no reason why MLB shouldn’t use IR for one specific reason, and one reason only: to confirm home runs. That’s it. Where’s the beef, YF?

  • Once you start using IR for one rule, the inevitable inclination will be to expand its purview. But even if that were not the case:
-IR is rarely decisive; replays can be deceptive
    -IR is time intensive
-Not all parks will be equipped equally
-The judgement of the ump is part of the game
-Once judgement is mechanized, the game loses its humanity, and there’s no turning back

  • Please. Games suffer time lags because umpires don’t enforce rules already on the books to keep them moving. The intermittent (and rest assured, if it’s used for limited reasons it will be used intermittently) use of IR will damage the speed of games almost imperceptibly. Games are slow, and they may get slower, but it could be otherwise, and that’s a failure of the league right now.
Most parks are equipped satisfactorily, due to cable tv – 20 years ago you would have been right about this. Times have changed.
I don’t subscribe to using replay for bang-bang plays, and for anything other than confirming that balls have left (or not left) the park. And the NFL has proven that replay can be used effectively to correct errors, to make sure that the players get what they deserve, and not what the referees mistakenly think they deserve. MLB should implement it, but with major restrictions.
YF ought to get into the 21st century, though I can understand why, during this winless millenium, he’d rather live in the last one.

  • Oh geez, are we going to have to run the whole “2000 is part of the 20th century” argument out again? Anyway, I’m taking SF’s side in that I’m OK with it for verifying homers, but the talk I’ve heard seems to indicate that instant replay will be more expansive than this. I’m not for that at all.

  • Mooted! YF thanks the 15 GMs who voted to pass on replay, thus tabling the discussion. Case closed.
