Grinding It

Excuse our absence from these parts of late; it’s been a busy week, and it’s about to get busier. We did catch the back half of tonight’s ballgame, however, and thoough we’re sad that Moose has now failed to achieve victory 14 after 3 tries, this was a quality win. Back in the good ole days Jorge and Tino and Jeets spoke of “grinding it” through the rough parts of the schedule. Tonight the Yanks did some serious grinding; taking pitches, getting on base, hustling all over the diamond, cashing in runners. It was a tremendous effort by the entire team, capped by the clutch hits from Damon and Cano, not to mention terrific baserunning from Melky and Abreu (with help from Larry Bowa, who’s been brilliant with runners all season), and stellar relief from Villone, Proctor, and Rivera. Everyone seemed into it, and there was a sense, even as the club was down late, that Baltimore was going to wear down. Which they did. (Yes, they are Baltimore.) A lot more grinding to do…..

  • Let the comments on Giambi’s pimp’stache begin! (When I saw it during his first AB I nearly swallowed my dip I started laughing so hard.)

  • I’m gonna say it’s an homage to Mattingly. Or for saving drugs for later.

  • Random thought from last night…
Is Mike Myers still on the team?
    Good win, though.

  • Jason is just getting back to his roots. JASON MAD. JASON SMASH!
Speaking of getting back, sorry about being away for the last few days. I needed to retire a few obligations before the big weekend. Also, I will be in Seattle for at least one, possibly two of the games with the Yankees next week, so I went on a sort of self-imposed game blackout to get things in order. Got the shakes from game withdrawl.

  • From the NYT:
Jason Giambi’s new mustache is here to stay. Giambi said he wanted to look like Don Mattingly, who wore a mustache as a player in the 1980’s when Giambi idolized him. “Back in the ‘Hit Man’ days,” Giambi said, laughing.
It was great to be at the Stadium last night, and it was a great game to be at: good pitching, exciting rallies, lots of tension, a come from behind win and, of course, Mo. And the Tigers flipping a 2-1 deficit to a 3-2 lead was the perfect capper.
But…will one Yankee starter PLEASE get to 14 wins?

  • I think the 14th win will go to Wang on Friday. He squares off against Lester who’s success has been attributed to some good pitching early on backed up by good run support and offensive power. The Sox haven’t been able to show anyone that recently, though. And let’s not forget Lester who hasn’t been the most confident in his more recent outings. With the way both teams have been playing, most of the momentum belongs to the Bombers. Wang is also coming off an outing where the Halos were just barely able to slap his balls through the infield…..if he plays his normal game we’ll see why he is the King of ground ball outs and double plays.

  • Headed to the stadium tonight – hopefully Lidle will pony up a good one. Can’t wait to hassle Millar.

  • B51 – I was there last night and when Millar homered most people booed him. I didn’t because I figure he loves to hear Yankee fans’ boos after he’s just gone yard.
